To everyone in the comments talking about how “unnecessary” and “uncivilized” recruit training is: That’s the entire point. The instructors don’t just yell and scream for the hell of it, it’s by design. They need these recruits (especially those in the Marine Corps and Army) to be able to function in highly stressful and chaotic environments such as a combat zone. If they don’t learn how to operate in such environments, they will shut down and not be able to function and complete their mission when and if that time comes. Combat is ugly, and your leaders are not going to hold your hand and politely ask you to load your machine gun or grab the extra ammo when grenades are exploding and people are actively shooting at you.
That and allowing soldiers to recount experiences of abuse and the resulting trauma, over a cup of coffee helps bond and improve cohesion, trust, loyalty to the fighting organization they’re a part of, and morale, mainly cause they did research, and found guys who bond through trauma have pretty good relationships. So yeah, it ain’t pointless, it’s the most cost effective and easy method for them to fill a need.
Only difference with my British army training is how warm and cuddly the DI's are. They were bullies but for a damn good reason as you so rightly point out, The cadets must fit into the Army etc , not the other way around. They helped save my life. I'd do it again if I could.

Thanks for the French translation! Very interesting report, very different from our French Navy!! We do not have an instructor sergeant, but depending on the sailor's specialty, several trainers. Naturally the new recruits learn military rigor, like at home. Then, the recruit begins his training which could last several weeks to several months depending on the importance of the position on board the ship!
I became a Marine in 2004. There is a reason why you can become a Marine, change branches and not need to go through their boot camp. USMCRD San Diego Ca is NO joke! They take boys and turn them into men! All the other branches y’all showed hella content than you did with the Marines. 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
When I went through Army basic in 1968, during the Vietnam War, we went through the same basic training as the marine corp. It was a shark attack all right! The Drill Sergeants were allowed to kick you, slap you, and knock you on your ass if you needed it. They always told us they didn't want us to get our ass' shot in 'Nam because we weren't trained properly. When I got to Vietnam in 1969, I found out why they were so hard on us. War IS Hell!
I graduated from boot camp at Ft. Sill, Ok a little over 20 years ago. They put us 100 deep in a cattle car with no seats and no air conditioning. When we got off some of toughest dudes I had ever seen were immediately in our faces trying to wear us down. As a young 18 year old I had no idea what I had signed up for until that moment. I might be planning to join the coast guard as a helicopter pilot when I’m old enough, and that last part, “they’re waiting for you to go out and join them in serving the American people” gave me SOO MUCH MOTIVATION!
Don't do it. Look into what the actual military operations of this country are, I get that you want to help but joining the military isn't the way to do that. Our military currently are not taking any actions that serve to aid anyone in need, do your research into what our forces are actually being used for. If you join the military you would simply become another pawn for the government to use in it's oil tycoon. If you want to serve the american people look into other service jobs like firefighting, police work, etc.

it's called initial shock; the whole program is carefully designed to serve the very specific purpose to prepare recruits to quickly adopt the transformation. You think it's a long day for recruits, but it is even more work for the drill Sergent, yelling is not fun, constantly keep the high-volume output on every aspect is not an easy and fun job, they don't get sleep well neither. those are finest men and women.
Man, things sure have changed in the last 20-odd years. When I was in OSUT Infantry Basic at Ft Benning, they fucked hard with us. I still remember it.. They would tell you to "grab 2 bags" inside of 2min. People would look for THEIR bags instead of just grabbing 2 bags, and so smoke session ensues. It took 4hrs for us to get the bags unloaded.. Those were the days.
My son who joined the Navy never experienced any of this at Boot Camp. They spent a couple of hours showing them how to shoot weapons, just in case. Never touched another gun again in the six years he served. He is one of the few people in the world that has a perfect memory. They gave him material to learn but he said he spent a lot of the time playing video games. After boot camp he went overseas where they let him get his own place. Tesla at some point made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. He now lives in Germany working for Tesla.
Theres a reason why if you're a marine you don't need to do the boot camp to other service branches... but if you're something else you still need to do marine corps boot camp.
One thing I learned before getting on the plane and landing in San Antonio, TX to start basic training is to wear clothing appropriately and that won’t make me stick out like a sore thumb such as neon colored shirts, flip flops should be a given as to not wearing, clothing with profanities on it and so on. Who wears footwear that you would wear to the beach or when you are in your pajamas? You can’t run in them and now she is identified wearing those amd may get a lot of grief for it!
Just a handful of simple Advice that I can give to anyone thinking of joining the United States military...... 1.) don't give up. 2.) LISTEN to exactly what your being told to do & only do it when told. 3.) don't take the yelling personal. 4.) you will be amazed by what your capable of. 5.) pay attention. 6.) boot camp for infantry is 5 & a half months, not like most military boot camps.

I would LOVE to see Business Insider come to Canada to look into the Basic Military Qualification of the Canadian Armed Forces. There really isnt much media out there of what exactly goes on at BMQ ever since the old tv show Basic Up! got cancelled. I would love for future recruits to be able to get an idea of what's precisely they have waiting for them once they get sworn in.
I went through boot camp in 1985 and I didn't learn anything worthwhile or anything that improved my life. When fraternities and sororities do things like this to their pledges it's called hazing and is a crime.
No, I noticed it as well. They seem to snub the Marines in this video, we only get to see the first bit of the Marines receiving process. I was kind of disappointed.
Isn´t the shaving of hair a measure to stop the spread of lice or fleas? Doesn´t not shaving hair of women make this practice seem it is about control or demeaning toward male cadets?
they are women, let’s be honest here the men are the one getting in the most combat, they can handle getting their hair cut, a female cannot due to the fact that they grew it out for years
It's the fastest way to get males hair into regulation while also taking away any sense of individuality. If you all have the same haircut, that's one less thing to differentiate you from someone else. Females may not have their hair cut, but they are still held to a strict standard of what it can / can't look like.

“We’re just about to find out” one of the hardest quotes I’ve ever heard sheesh 🔥
A blunter explanation is that to have a group of robots you need to dehumanise them
Only difference with my British army training is how warm and cuddly the DI's are. They were bullies but for a damn good reason as you so rightly point out, The cadets must fit into the Army etc , not the other way around. They helped save my life. I'd do it again if I could.

Wished I could've experienced this...due to physical infirmities (spina bifida occulta and 4+ flat feet) I was denied each time I attempted to sign up (4 times for the Air Force, twice for the Navy, and once each for the Army and National Guard). Would've been a lifer for sure. Told the recruiter I knew I would be a liability on the front lines; I didn't care if I was in the rear with the gear...at the end of the day I would still have the honor of serving my country.

so I just got back from army basic training. My "Shark attack" was similar. the yelling was the same, but we held a squat for about 30 minuets wile holding our bags. Then to add onto that we did the first 100 yards a week after basic started at the end of yellow phase, right before starting red phase.

Nice to see US Army Air Assault School's infamous "Zero Day" thrown in here. Having done it twice, I can say it was definitely one of the worst days in the Army. Sucks to see Miller and McCurdy make it through Zero Day and the rest of the school and fail on the 12 mile road march at the end of the couse.
Nahhhh not the diddy bag 😂💀
Those shots at 14:35-14:45 look brutal. I hate getting shots. That would totally freak me out. Props to them.
You can barely feel those shots piercing the skin. They used to use air guns and those hurt, especially if you moved when they were zapping you.
I take testosterone so I do it 2x a week and I used to do heroin but im clean now so needles have been a big part of my life unfortunately
I went through Army "boot" in '82, I "walked the gauntlet" at Reception when they still used air guns to give shots. If you flinched, there'd be blood running down your arms.

In the 80s' Army, the Shark Attack lasted for an entire week, 24/7. They called it Hell Week. Not 20 minutes.
In the year 2000 also.
But fatherless generation cries when you speak rough with them. Also no hands touching the recruits. Silly clowns playing actors
Yup! I went through in 1982, we went from reception to our training brigade on what they used to call "cattle cars". When it pulled up in front of our building & those big sliding doors opened, the DI's were on us & HELL BEGAN!

the world is more diverse now if we like it or not. people are not joining in numbers we need. 2/3 of the american youth would not qualify even 10 years ago. they have a fat camp before you get to basic if you need it available now. while quality is the ultimate goal, you do need a critical mass of bodies just to function and we are all volunteer. good luck.

it's called initial shock; the whole program is carefully designed to serve the very specific purpose to prepare recruits to quickly adopt the transformation.

YOU WILL NOT SHAVE MY HEAD, COMMANDER!
I’m sorry but if someone was jumping up and down and shouting in my face I would do nothing but laugh 😂

Good point.
they are women, let’s be honest here the men are the one getting in the most combat, they can handle getting their hair cut, a female cannot due to the fact that they grew it out for years
It's the fastest way to get males hair into regulation while also taking away any sense of individuality. If you all have the same haircut, that's one less thing to differentiate you from someone else. Females may not have their hair cut, but they are still held to a strict standard of what it can / can't look like.
