I am a 76 year old American civil engineer living and working in Kherson, Ukraine, through the Russian military occupation and my own personal military detention and interrogation. My friend, Sergiy, a retired cop that got me out somehow, was crying when he picked me up when I got out. He said that they could have just killed me as was done to so many Ukrainians here. Now that I am out, I am starting to realize more and more how lucky I was. I am trying to work efficiently and effectively to help Ukraine win the war to the 1991 borders (anything less is not a victory) , rebuild the country and bring down the Putin/FSB regime. If Russia became a true democracy, I believe it would very quickly become one of the top economies of Europe. There are millions of very smart, very inventive hard working citizens in Russia. I live in hope that the people of Russia get this chance soon.
I think it is naive of Kara-Murza to believe that Russia could become a "normal European country." Germany and Japan only became "normal" with occupation and new constitutions, both achieved after much slaughter. Moreover, each of those nations had a liberal tradition not too removed from their fascist period. Russia is going to need more of this kind of intervention, not less. As long as Russians see empire and conquest as part of their national identity this will repeat over and over. Kara-Murza's hope that the next time Russia is amenable to change we should "support them all we can" is really missing the point. A lot of support was given to them 30 years ago. The trade links and support only created the means for Russia to rebuild and go after Georgia and Ukraine. Trade does not change nations, it only enriches them.

I feel the same fear for the future of democracy, frusia. The new power in the world seems to consist of evil regimes in alliance i.e. China, Russia, North Korea and Iran; plus support by India. As Russia, China and India all have enormous populations and resources the prospect for human rights and equality look very bleak indeed. Indians online are already bragging about their imminent dominance over the West. They are in the trade organisation BRICS - for emerging economies, aiming to topple the dominance of the West and replace the default world currency (USD) with something new.
@sanataj I realise that the coming years won't be easy. Three things give me hope: 1. Autocrats can't co-operate. I saw it during the elections in Poland last year. The autocrats had all the state media and enormous advantage. They would have won again, but they couldn't bring themselves to compromise with another similar party. Meanwhile the democratic parties got together and that's how we won. 2. The autocrats are only as clever as the top guy. They can't utilise the talents that are naturally within the people of the group. Democracy is strong through the talents of many, autocracy requires fear and violence to maintain. It constantly needs to push others down to survive. It's an incredibly expensive system. Of course they have a lot of money, but the cost of maintenance of autocracy is one of its weaknesses. 3. While I get worried and disheartened by seeing how many people get blinded by the lies of autocrats, I also see how it makes the democratic side shine. Difficult times bring the worst in us, but also the very best. Look at the heroes of democracy like Kara-Murza or Navalny. Those people are diamonds of integrity. People like that only ever emerge in opposition to evil. And there are many, many more, in every corner of the globe, although not everyone is as visible of course. Democracy is going through a trial of fire, but it is not lost. And maybe each one of us has a part to play. Don't give up.

Putin’s regime is indeed slowly ending, bleeding a slow death. His biggest mistake and downfall was invading Ukraine, blinded by ego, money and power, living in a KGB fantasy world. He thought to teach NATO a lesson by invading Ukraine in a wink of an eye. And we believed that. Thanks to Times Radio for bringing us two incredibly brave and knowledgeable speakers. Another 'glimpse' of how much suppressed anti-regime feeling exists in Russia occurred at Navalny's funeral. A huge turnout, where people chanted Navalny's name and expressed their views on war and autocracy.
Alexei Navalny was a far-right racist who referred to migrants as insects, and proposed they were shot. Oh, and by the way, Navalny supported the annexation of Crimea and Russia's support for the separatists in Eastern Ukraine in 2014. He's not the fluffy chap you've been led to believe.

I think it is naive of Kara-Murza to believe that Russia could become a "normal European country." Germany and Japan only became "normal" with occupation and new constitutions, both achieved after much slaughter. Moreover, each of those nations had a liberal tradition not too removed from their fascist period. Russia is going to need more of this kind of intervention, not less. As long as Russians see empire and conquest as part of their national identity this will repeat over and over.
Kara-Murza's hope that the next time Russia is amenable to change we should "support them all we can" is really missing the point. A lot of support was given to them 30 years ago. The trade links and support only created the means for Russia to rebuild and go after Georgia and Ukraine.

I'm Polish. I pray every day for peace in our region, and also for a new Russia that will make people like you feel proud, you deserve it so much.
I feel the same fear for the future of democracy, frusia. The new power in the world seems to consist of evil regimes in alliance i.e. China, Russia, North Korea and Iran; plus support by India. As Russia, China and India all have enormous populations and resources the prospect for human rights and equality look very bleak indeed. Indians online are already bragging about their imminent dominance over the West. They are in the trade organisation BRICS - for emerging economies, aiming to topple the dominance of the West and replace the default world currency (USD) with something new.
@sanataj I realise that the coming years won't be easy. Three things give me hope: 1. Autocrats can't co-operate. I saw it during the elections in Poland last year. The autocrats had all the state media and enormous advantage. They would have won again, but they couldn't bring themselves to compromise with another similar party. Meanwhile the democratic parties got together and that's how we won.
2. The autocrats are only as clever as the top guy. They can't utilise the talents that are naturally within the people of the group. Democracy is strong through the talents of many, autocracy requires fear and violence to maintain. It constantly needs to push others down to survive. It's an incredibly expensive system. Of course they have a lot of money, but the cost of maintenance of autocracy is one of its weaknesses.
3. While I get worried and disheartened by seeing how many people get blinded by the lies of autocrats, I also see how it makes the democratic side shine. Difficult times bring the worst in us, but also the very best. Look at the heroes of democracy like Kara-Murza or Navalny. Those people are diamonds of integrity. People like that only ever emerge in opposition to evil. And there are many, many more, in every corner of the globe, although not everyone is as visible of course. Democracy is going through a trial of fire, but it is not lost. And maybe each one of us has a part to play. Don't give up.

Thanks to Times Radio for bringing us two incredibly brave and knowledgeable speakers. Another 'glimpse' of how much suppressed anti-regime feeling exists in Russia occurred at Navalny's funeral. A huge turnout, where people chanted Navalny's name and expressed their views on war and autocracy.
Alexei Navalny was a far-right racist who referred to migrants as insects, and proposed they were shot.
Oh, and by the way, Navalny supported the annexation of Crimea and Russia's support for the separatists in Eastern Ukraine in 2014. He's not the fluffy chap you've been led to believe.
