OM1 - Field Test - Using Live ND for Seascapes on the Cornwall Coast

- In this video, I show some seascapes taken on the Cornwall coast where I use the OM1 and Live ND. The lenses I use in the video are the 8-25mm F4 Pro and the 12-40mm F2.8 Pro.
The locations I photograph at are :
St. Michaels Mount, Port Leven Beach,
Sennen Cove, Dollar Cove, Gunwalloe.

Thanks Peter. Live ND is very useful. Nothing that cannot be done with normal ND filters, but its speed and ease of use really. With normal `slot in` or `screw in` filters you have to carefully take the filter out of the holder, (anyone who has dropped a Big Stopper will know what I mean. Not a cheap excersice replacing a broken one) You then put it away, carefully take the next one out and slot it in the holder. You then have the check you have not slightly moved the camera or focus in doing so. It all takes time.
Magical shots . I haven’t tried this technique before and you have described beautifully how to do so, thank you.

Thank you. I found it very useful as how the Live ND feature works, and your teaching point on use of different positions of the camera. Change and orientation are close to the importance of lighting.

Nice video Roger, with some really lovely landscapes. Certainly a very useful built in feature and more so as it doesn’t come with the colour cast associated with external filters. FWIW. I’m more than happy with the music at the end and always enjoy your vids.

@@rogerhance5883 Maybe lower the volume a little so that it’s just a faint background track. I thought it was a quite nice accompaniment. Are you finding the new camera a worthwhile upgrade?
@@davidosborn3356 I think the music could be slightly lower, but I thought the track suited the pictures quite well. The OM1 is definately a big improvement David. The autofocus is much better, and there are a lot of other areas that they have improved. Mike has one now, so I am waiting to see how he thinks it compares to his Sony.

Excellent Roger, some good information here. I think that another advantage over traditional filter types is that there is no tint to worry about which - despite what the manufacturers tell you - is always there to some degree once you move to higher stop values.

I got my OM1 few time ago and I find very useful to shortcut the liveND function by assign it to the L-fn button on the lens.
When you do this you just have to push L-fn and turn at the same time the front or back wheel to change the ND value instantly avoiding to enter the menu.
That`s a good tip.
Very nice video, Roger. I’d just like to add that LiveND has yet another benefit over optical versions - it expands the dynamic range/minimises noise in a way similar to the High Res modes (the stronger the ND setting the higher the DR).

The best use of those live ND built in filters is for video. Ideally, if you are shooting video at 25 frames per second, then your shutter speed should be 1/50 seconds. In good light, this is difficult.
Next to that, my use would be to fine-tune an external ten stop filter, or to get some blur on moving water.
Never thought of using it for shooting video. Will give it a try.
@@rogerhance5883 I don't think Live ND is available in video. It's a computational mode, not an actual internal ND filter.

Very helpful Roger, thank you. I'm just exploring Live ND with exactly the same setup. One small point - I find the music rather distracting. Your content is great and probably better without it - I don't know what others think?
Thanks for the kind comment about the video. Live ND is definately worth playing around with. I quite like the music but I maybe I could have lowered the volume down a tad. I always think that if I just talk with no background music, it sounds a bit too much like a lecture/camera club talk.

Roger I enjoyed the video and the information you provided about live ND. I have a OMD 1 mark III and think I can apply this information to my camera. The Live ND can be used in manual and shutter priority. I am wondering which setting you used. Thank you

Thanks Roger. I have Canon gear and am interested in your Olympus tutorials. I did wonder if having NDs in camera prevents any colour changes, sometimes I notice this with my Lee filters. Is there in camera an equivalent to the 10 stopper ( big stopper) and if not I am correct in assuming I could then use the Lee ( I like very long exposures on occasion).
Hi Deborah. There is no colour cast from the filter when using Live ND. Live ND only goes up to ND64 on the OM1 (equivalent of a Little Stopper on Lee filters). You can use both Live ND and Lee filters combined. I use Lee soft edge grads to control contrast between sky and foreground. There is no reason why you cannot use other filters in combination together. In some of the shots I took when it was very bright, I used Live ND64 and a Kood 4 stop ND filter as well. On occassions I like doing very long exposures, although I never really liked using a Big Stopper. Hope this helps.

Glad you liked it. TO be honest, I could easily have used manual. Obviously LiveND only works is Shutter Priority or Manual, - not AV, which is what I normally use.
Very helpful video. I used live ND for the first time in France recently with the 40-150 lens to get low down close ups of a river, and was very pleased with the effect. I also got a Heron in a waterfall with the 300 f4 and that worked well too. A question : I do not like tripods and use live ND handheld. How essential is a tripod for wide angle landscapes?
Glad you liked the video. For wide angle landscapses I have gone down to a 1sec hand held and got sharp images. Over that , you may find camera shake can be a problem. It depends on how stady you can hand hold. I have taken shots at 1.5 secs hand held , and still got sharp pictures, but for this you need to take a few more shots to ensure one or two of them will be O.K.
Thanks very useful. Unfortunately the first concrete slipway shots taken on video looked awful because of the horrible straight edge.

Surprised you have a strap attached to your camera ! The wind is blowing it and I would have thought that could have effect on camera movement, even on a tripod.
Thats a good point David. Since I made that video I have moved to a system where I can unclip the camera strap. (peak design)
Hi Roger. Superb set of images. You have sparked my imagination to get out and use the ND mode. However, whilst getting used to the settings on my OM-1I note that setting the shutter speed and then setting the ND number I get a different shutter speed for example, if I set an exposure of 2 seconds at ND64 when I return to my settings 8 seconds appears. I have also noted that figures appear to go up as well as down depending on the ND setting. Am I correct.
My second question. Do you turn image stabilisation off for the feature?
Firstly thanks for the kind comment about the images. Easy answer first. I dont bother to turn the IS off when using a tripod. Olympus recomend you do, but I have never bothered and had not problems. Generally speaking, I decide how long a shutter speed I want, and then adjust the aperature /ISO setting to get the correct exposure. I do often use a polarizer and ND soft edge grad, so that usually enables me to get the effect I want. Hope this helps.
@@rogerhance5883 Thank you for your very prompt response Roger. I thought IS on/off would make little difference and you have confirmed that. I will be following your approach and will be using the shutter mode rather than manual. Also, experimenting with different ND settings/shutter speeds. I will be shooting on the coast so your use of a soft grad and polariser was most helpful. I have both so will be utilising. I really enjoy the bird videos keep them coming!!!

with the different live nd levels is the shutter speed changing or is camera just doing some kind of simulation?
I am using Sputter Priority so I set the shutter at the speed I think will give me the effect I want. So I then scroll through the LiveND exposure values until I get a correct exposure.
Very nice set Roger ( as expected :) ) not tried live Nd yet but impressed with the outcome. Like the ND 4 with the the wall .the waves give a nice texture and gives true wave form ,but the fast waves over the wall are nice and soft which you expect with a longer shutter speed , better than a full soft sea that most people take. .what filter holder have you for the OM1 ? i have full set of Lee but im looking for a set where i can remove or place the polariser with out removing the holder .( mine is screwed on to the holder) Thanks
Cheers Roger . I had the same problem with the polariser on the old Lee filter holder. It was always fiddly to attach , and sometimes difficult to unsrew. The new Lee filter holder is a lot better. Much easier to get on and off, and works well. Hope this helps.

Its a Benro. Benro Mach3 Series Carbon Fibre Tripod + Benro B2+PU60 Magnesium Ball Head. I am very pleased with it.
