How to Photograph a Garden Fox
In this video, I show both stills and video footage of a Fox that has been coming into our town garden. Initially, it came at night, but now it comes to visit us in broad daylight. I am photographing the Fox using both the OM1mkII and the OM1, and the 40-150 F2.8 lens as well as the 12-40mm F2.8. All video footage is taken hand held at 4K 60fps.

Editing Photo Stacked Images in Photoshop when you have incorrectly set the Differential

Setting the `Differential` correctly when Photo Stacking with the OM1 (or Olympus cameras ) can be a bit `trail and error`. Because I have been using `Stacking` for a few years, I have a reasonable idea of what to set, but I still occasionally get it wrong, and I end up with a `halo` around the top of the subject. Fortunately, its very easy to correct in Photoshop, and in this video I show to t...

Hi Roger, great informative video many thanks. Please could you tell me what software these images were processed on please?
For hand held stacking I have used single-point autofocus placing the focus point a little into the subject. Is there a better reason to use manual focus for stacking/bracketing on the OM-1?
Single point autofcus works well a lot of the time. I find that when doing very small subjects, using peaking and being able to manually focus helps, but its really down to what yur most comfortable using.
Hi Richard its me again I have watched the Start of this video with regards to the fungi using stacking but I can't get the peaking to work unless its in manual with the ring when and I get no box surrounding the image I put it to auto focus I can't get the peaking to come up any ideas ty
Hi John, I will get back to you tomorrow about this.
Hi John, For stacking to work, you have to have use either shutter priory ( what I use) or manual. It will not work in aperture priority. On the super control panel you need to have single focus selected and the AF set to continuous silent on the drive. When you have the OM1 set for `stacking` , you will need to have the front `clutch` pushed forward so the camera will autofocus. You will now see the black framing line around the outside of the back screen. The black stacking framing line will only show while the camera is in AF focus mode , (focus ring pushed forward ) Peaking will not work in AF mode. Now frame the shot up, and then pull the clutch ring back for manual focus. Peaking will now work, but the black framing line will disappear. This is normal. Focus, very carefully ( very slightly into the subject for stacking) Use peaking to see exactly where you are focusing . Now gently push the focus clutch forward, being careul not to change the focus . The black framing box will appear again. Dont worry , this is normal. Now press the shutter. It will take the designated number of shots you have set, and you will see the green progress bar (saying its busy) as it is stacking the shots. You then have the finshed stack jpeg along with the number of shots that you had in the stack. I hope this helps.
@@rogerhance5883 Ty Roger its now works a treat brilliant how you explained it
@@johnspreadbury4026 Hi John, Thanks for letting me know. I am glad it sorted you out 👍
I have the same camera converted to full spectrum. I have a 590nm filter and soon to buy the 850nm. My old Canon was a 720nm but I chose full spectrum this time for maximum versatility, love it. This only happened late last year so looking forward to experimenting this year.
Its great to have a camera converted to IR. It opens up so many possibilities for photography. Dont think you can only use it on sunny bright days. It can give interesting results on dull days as well. Hope you enjoy using you IR camera.👍
Thanks god bless
Какие объективы поддерживают функцию фокус стэкинга на om d e m1 mark 3?
To be honest, I am not sure. I know the 60mm Macro does, and it also works on the 40-150mm F2.8 pro. You had best contact OM Systems to find out about the 90mm Macro ? It should do, providing your EM1mkIII firmware is up to date.
@@rogerhance5883I couldn't find information about lenses that support stacking. And as I understand it, Panasonic MFT AF lenses do not support.
Hi Roger great video again .I have just got the 0MD 1 Mark 2 and the 90mm macro lens when I'm focus peaking and then try to stack I notice that the focus point moves when I use the remote any ideas where I'm going wrong ty .by the way great talk the other week at cirencester camera club
Thanks for the kind comment about the video. Glad you enjoyed the Cirencester talk. With `stacking`, the focus point will move after you press the shutter. Its strange, but the way the `stacking works` is : You manually focus slighty into the subject, and press the shutter. The camera then reverts to autofocus. The first shot it takes is at the position where you focus, and then the fcus moves back two frames, before moving through the subject. Its a strange way of working, but thats how it does it. For `bracketing` , (where the images are seperate, and you have stack them yourself on the computer) you have to focus directly at the front of the subject. Hope this helps.
@@rogerhance5883 Hi ty very much for your quick reply its bit of a learning curve coming from nikon and fuji
@@johnspreadbury4026 It definately is. Try MIke Lanes UA-cam channel. Its very useful.
Sold all my Sony ff and downsized to OM and ive never been happier
A very useful video - thanks for posting this. Very good tutorial on some aspects of low level macro and close up work. Nice to see you are getting excellent photos in natural light - something I try to do also if possible. Never tried a beanbag but I am having to use a macro rail and manually step it so tend to use the inverted centre column technique. As an aside, you have me wondering again about returning to m43 which I did use for macro. In camera focus shifting on a Nikon Z6 is not very user friendly and otherwise, on my aps DSLR, I have to resort to focus rails etc - all this gets a bit of an ungainly outfit to set up and haul around. Thanks again
What would be a good buy in an older MFT camera to convert? I’m using the Om1 Mk Il at the moment
Thanks for commenting. I would go for a second hand EM1mkIII. You should be able to pick one up in good condition, at a very good price.
How fast does the entire stack last, in real time, as you shot? What is the FPS?
Not quite sure what you mean ? It only takes a brief second to take the shots, and it is abour 3or 4 seconds to stack them together. I have it set on sequential low.
Great video. I'm considering this setup. You mentioned that with the bottom leg not out, it is still up to your height. Any chance you'd be able to measure the height without the bottom leg extended please? The max height would be too tall for me too once I actually have something mounted on it. While i could make micro adjustments to the legs to get it to the perfect height for me, i want to know if keeping all but the bottom section extended would work for me. Thanks!
You can set the height to match your needs. If it's too tall at max height then don't fully extended the legs. As it's listed in the specs you have a working height range of 4.7 inches to 59.1 inches.
Lovely healthy looking young fox roger and even tamer than the Ipswich foxes all those years ago! I have a fox regularly coming to my garden as well as the badgers but like the badgers always after dark. Hopefully though it will still be coming in the lighter nights 👍

Great instructional videos! Thanks so much for taking the time to do them! I was wondering…. Is it possible to “fix” the halo by throwing out the offending frames that went too far into the background and re-stacking what the camera originally processed? I’m new to mirrorless and image editing in general, so am somewhat overwhelmed by the possibilities. Thanks!
Hi LInda, Thanks for commenting. Yes, that is one way of doing it. The advantage of `stacking` is that although you end up with a `stacked` Jpeg, you still have the raws, so you can stack them yourself.
@ Thanks so much for your quick reply! I imagine doing the edits is probably a faster way of dealing with it overall (once I learn) 😊
That is absolutely amazing to get so close and to have one visiting your garden

Delightful. It is such a pleasure to share a moment with a such a magnificent wild animal. We had a similar relationship with a badger.
