    The great thing about Igbo people is that we can switch to this central Igbo that every Igbo speaking person understands and it is not even thought by anybody. Yes, we have our local dialects but we can communicate within ourselves without problems.

    It’s so refreshing to see a linguistic overview of what traditionally falls under the umbrella of “Igbo.” I think we all know that there’s been much back and forth over the status of, say, Ika or Ikwerre as dialects of Igbo or as very closely related languages in their own right. So, this deeper dive into the linguistic classificatory situation of Igbo and Igboid is quite helpful

It can be complicated, but I don't think it's that hard. But regardless i'm so afraid of these dialects going extinct someone needs to record and document them all.

    Igbo languages have variation due to natural separation from the Igbo heartland (when we first migrated to Igboland from the Niger Benue confluence) and influence from their neighbors. Western/Delta Igbos have heavy influence from the Bini Kingdom. Ikwerre has influence from the Ijo city states. Abiribia and the areas in Arochukwu take from the Ibibio people and Enugu/Ebonyi borrow from the Igala and Idoma. There were different circumstances from this diffusion of languages (Igbos in Abiriba area conquered and assimilated the Ibibios around there while Igbos in Enugu were conquered by the Igala).

But some of the Igbo I’ve picked up is similar to what people in Anambra or Rivers speak and when I put my parents’ specific villages under Egbuoma village in Google maps it explained a lot dialectically. Girl I almost took offense from this video based on the Thumbnail. I thought you were trying to categorize onitsha people as part of Igbo that deny our igbo heritage based on the other groups listed on the Thumbnail. Greatful that’s not what this video was about cause I was about to write a notebook full on how completely inaccurate you are 😂😂.
    Anyway, I’m from Onitsha and speak central igbo. I think our dialect is more along with central/Anambra dialect with a variation of wawa (Enugu) terminology mixed in.

    • @eeke7438
      @eeke7438 3 роки тому +15

      Language classification is not about feeling, it is actually a professionally and academically researched work. Ekpeye as a people may not want to be classified as Igbo but the language they speak is "Igboid" or Nuclear Igbo. This is the academically accepted classification. It doesn't matter what the community thinks or feels. However, they can choose their own separate identity as a people, which is just a matter of politics or even true origin.
