- Gov. Wike of Rivers State: I am not Igbo, Ikwerre people are not Igbos, we are from Benin, and Rivers State is not part of Biafra. We are Niger Delta.
In 1976, Obigbo LGA in the former Imo State in Aba division was ceded to Rivers because it has up to 50 oil wells. Thereafter it was changed to Oyigbo. Obigbo people are pure Igbo speaking Igbos. Ndoni was ceded to Rivers although related to Ogbaru, the home of Dennis Osadebe of Anambra, the high life musician. So Rivers State has Igbos from Egbema, Ohaji, Ndoni, Ndoki, Umuma, Etche etc. who are all Igbos but the common denominator of being ceded to Rivers is because of oil.

The problem with the governor is that he thinks he has the right to choose his ethnicity. You can't be born a Yoruba and you wake up tomorrow and say you are a Hausa or Igbo. You have the right say that but you can't force people to accept your choice because it is not something you can chose and drop at will.
How can a parent name a child a "new baby"? Wike said his name means new baby. When such a person becomes a man, will you still call him a new baby? Who calls a grown up man a new baby? A lot of male children are called "Boy" when they are young and such nicknames are usually dropped as soon as they grow up because of the obvious contradiction in such a name.

a common mistake a lot of people do both from internal quarters of a group as well as externals when it comes to mixed lineages or heritages is trying to do a linear trace and then assigning an origin to these groups based on such linear trace. However mixed lineages can be better understood from the concept of ethnogenesis. Ethnogenesis births an entirely different ethnicity from stock ethnicities . This includes if you can identify an earlier or aboriginal arrival in that group. I am kwale for instance and there are a great deal of edoid/iduoid words in my dialect like 'ughegbe' for mirror and 'ukpa'/'ukpe' for lamps which are used only by iduoid groups but unused by the igboid groups. It also contains a great deal of words of igboid origin so that the dialect is fused. There are names of both igboid origins as well as edoid/iduoid origins. It is the result of a mixed lineage or ancestry from these stock ethnicities over centuries to millennia possibly. Ethnogenesis produces a new and different ethnicity so that the Itsekiris , ukwuanis/kwales, igbankes etc will end up internalizing their own distinct uniqueness in Identity as well as having their respective dictionaries as the dialects try as you may or identity try as you may cannot converge with those of the stock ethnicities aboriginal or not.
