- The new iPhone 15 Pro allows for ProRes Log video but how can you film in ProRes Log to an external SSD while recording audio, monitoring the camera and not drain you phone battery? In this video I break down a set up that allows you to do it all! I find this set up best suited for a-roll set ups, it won't work well for on the go vlog style content. But if you want to film in your studio with your iPhone 15 Pro and have the full color controls that ProRes Log offers this is the set up for you!

Wow. This is so good charging station and filming set all in a smaller compact form. It sounds too good to be true, but that’s the kind of area Ben impresses us most ❤
This was super sick. Thanks for the amazing tutorial. It's given me some ideas for my vlogging set up.
Awesome video Ben! Thanks for sharing your setup, and the lighting course looks great as well!
Yoh this Video's 🔥 Alltogether one of the best setups I've seen so far! Keep it Coming with the iPhone Pro Tips.
This is exactly the same setup I was thinking of doing, thanks!
Exactly the set up I was looking for to get external audio as well as saving to a hard drive. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
I literally just commented on someone else’s video how to record to an external drive and mic and voila here your video is! 🙌🏾
That's awesome! I’m glad you found it!
Glad I caught this video in time! Bought a few pieces off the back of this for my set up! Subscribed :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing content, thank You man!!
This is exactly the rig I needed for my videos!
It’s pretty great!
The BMC app does give you clean video feed output - usb c to HDMI cable to a small FeelWorld Monitor or whatever appeals to me even more than the mirror for a set-up. Also you can air cast it to an Apple TV / box and that works nicely. Just adapting what you have. But the BMC app with the iPhone 15 Pro Max is definitely a game changer for me. BTW - that small rig SSD holder also works nicely with the small Crucial X9 and 10 SSDs. For extended video sessions I have a small rig power bank mount and run that output to the power in of the usb hub. Just so flexible as to what the possibilities are.
Great work! Keep killing it!
Thanks Greg!
Beautiful idea and well executed.
Thank you very much!
On my rig I use a USB hub with an SD card slot for high speed cards so I can eliminate the SSD drive. I also use a small usb-c audio interface made by Saramonic which allows real-time monitoring of the audio during recording. So many possibilities with the iPhone 15’s usb-c port. Thanks.
Lots of possibilities indeed
Thank you very much.
Which Dji mic receiver would you recommend? Thanks for the video.
impressive setup
Thanks man! Was fun to figure out something that would do all the things lol
insane!! such a good idea
Thanks man!
yes this is awesome i start to subscribe now...
Thanks!
Hy Ben
Do you have the stand we use with the iPhone and teleprompter?
And please make a video on it using a teleprompter.
Hey! I bought the whole kit you reco’d but not sure how you set up your anklet battery pack into this mix???? Love some help here
Kind of spooky how the algorithm sends you exactly what you need lol. I just bought an Apple Watch for monitoring and I see this. The mirror is 100 times better plus the other rig pieces are a must have. Thanks 🔥
The algorithm knows what you need 😂
This setup inspired me as I had most of the parts already. However, I simplified it slightly.
I had to reorganize things a little since I didn't have the monitoring mirror. First, I attached the SmallRig SSD to the cold shoe mount on the USB-C hub clamp. Then, I attached the DJI RX using the USB-C adaptor directly into the USB-C hub on the end closest to the SSD. Sure, this blocks one of the ports; however, you can purchase some low-profile USB-C cables if you need that fourth port.
Alternatively, you can throw the DJI RX on the top cold shoe mount that isn't being used.
Nice! I like it
Is the dji mic secure from gravity in your setup since the USB hub ports are facing downward
I actually flipped the ports to face upward, the usb hub cable is long enough for that
@@blairhamcool, do you have a pic of your setup?
@@zyreno a quick snap, sorry didn't set it up to look pretty

Hi thanks for the video ! Do you need if the SSD universal Smallrig fit into it please ?
I got this exact setup, are you able to output to an external monitor? I tried hooking up a USBC-HDMI to the splitter and don't get a signal out.
Super nice video, but whats a battery?
Does the Ulanzi tripod mount work with a camera case on?
Please, I have a question: With a usbc \ lightning adapter is it possible to mount this system on an iphone 14 pro?
This is great but im having an issue when trying to do this vertically, things dont fit moving it vertically any suggestion?
Love this! Haven't seen others getting DJI Mic to work through a usb-c-hub. Great that it works. Just one question: Why not connect DJI Mic in the available cold shoe on the hub mount where the usb-c-hub is placed? That will cut down on two items (screw + extra cold shoe).
You could def do that but then you’d need to put the hub somewhere
It would work there if you did like a 2 port splitter/dongle type adapter instead of a hub
But I wanted to include the extra line for power too
You could def mount the DJI mic there tho!
@@benjohnsoncreative Thanks for the answer. I was not thinking about placing DJI Mic in the actual mount - but on the cold shoe on top of the hub mount so we'd both have the usb-c-hub AND the DJI Mic placed in the ULANZI ST-07 Phone Tripod Mount (since this also has a cold shoe mount).
@@andreasdkAh yes I see what you mean, you could def do this!
I was wondering if I could use this to stream clean HDMI out for extended amounts of time, to make a streaming setup, without the phone overheating. Have you tested how long such a rig could film for?
I will probably wait until some manufacturer actually makes an all in one solution grip with NVME-Slot inside, to not worry about the cables so much. In the end, my phone still needs to be portable. I want to have this functionality by just attaching a single thing to my phone. Not on the market yet but I am sure someone is gonna make it
Filmic Pro & others give you remote control over your phone via WiFi, can also link to DJI gimbals I think?
Is a Logitech Brio 4K better or about the same or not as good as my iPone 15 Pro Max when used as a webcam?
thanks for the video. please send us a video where you show us that with belkin the iphone is recharged using the ssd and mic. I wrote to Belkin support and they say it can't work... I bought this device after seeing your video and I'm sorry...
What if you want to film vertical how much would this set up change?
Would this work for a 14Pro? I’m wondering if this set up is worth it for me. I don’t upgrade my phones regularly and part of me feels that by the time I upgrade to a 15 there will be better options. But if it doesn’t work on a 14 pro anyway well then I don’t have to worry lol
can you put this setup with a DJI OM6?
Thanks. Wondering about your toughts. Prices for your set up in comparison to a Black magic studio pro G2 kamera with lens? I am asking because i want to buy gear for live streaming and i am looking in to Black magic stuff but now with the Iphone 15 pro...Do you see a good outcome for live stream with the Iphone 15 pro?
Me personally, I prefer an actual camera
Love the setup Ben! Thanks for sharing this. Only thing I'm wondering is how does it work with the dji mic? Do you have the receiver clipped underneath your shirt? or does it work like a shotgun mic?
I usually just clip it right in my shirt, the receiver has a USBC attachment that connects to the phone via the hub. The transmitter (mic) is clipped to my shirt
Having issues w belkin hub external monitoring atomos ninja . Plug ninja direct to iphone it works fine. Any suggestions?
Hello, you arrive to charge with a external charger or not ? With mine, impossible, only if I charge from a wall outlet ;(
Power of lighting 2:16
I see that too.
Bro are you getting any of the gear?
how it does record on the ssd ? any settings change needed?
Could I change the tripod for a flexible metal arm?
just a tip, turning off HDR, the ProRes will be 8bit instead of 10 bit color, with good lighting, that is ok, but if you shoot outside, you will see color bands in the sky once graded
Maybe a dumb question, but is the power brick listed in the featured gear list a must-have? Would the regular white USB C power brick I use for my iPhone 15 pro max also work to power everything?
I think it would work, haven’t tried it yet myself
Can you give me the make and model of the riser that is in between the tripod and the metal ulanzi phone clamp?
Awesome video! One question on the hub and the SSD; are you plugging in the SSD through the hubs USB C pass through port? If so, any issues with read/write speeds? I would imagine things would go a little smoother with recording if the SSD was plugged direly into the iPhones USB C port, but then that blocks options for other things that need to be connected like mics.
Yes it probably would be more efficient on the drive to go direct but I didn’t have any noticeable read write speed issues or anything going through the hub
No its fine as long as you are not using a 10Gbps Ssd you are okay also even you will use one iPhone will not write at 10gbps speed
Tengo un iphone 13 pro max con un mic boya mm1 y si grabo con wifi se escucha un ruido de interferencia tambien pasa con los datos moviles con todo los aditamentos tambien pasa es molesto tener que desactivar toda señal del iphone
Is there a similar rig for iPhone 14 pro?
Cool! is it possible to use powerbank at the same time with this setup?
Yep, I’m just hard plugging to an outlet but you could plug in to a power bank instead
Shure that your setup includes the DJI Mic? Does the DJI Mic realy work with an SSD drive attached on the Belkin adapter?
Yep
Any issues with heat on the phone? Any good cooling fan solutions?
I haven’t had any issues
sweet
I’m having trouble understanding how you can see the mirror reflection?
Can you make a video for non-pro models that how to make talking head videos using non pro iphone and also with budget setup? 🤔❔Because i am new to content creation with limited budget. 🙄🙄
Is 100 watt power brick necessary???
I saw another video where someone was struggling to record to an external SSD while simultaneously using an external mic. Did you run into any issues with that?
Not with this set up
Bonjour,
Merci d’avance
Cordialement
Mickaël
Note: The USB-C hub mentioned here does NOT support pass-through charging, so you can't charge your phone through this hub. Anker has hubs that do support pass-through charging.
It worked with charging for me
@@benjohnsoncreative it doesn't work for me with an Anker 737. I will return the Belkin hub to Amazon...
@@benjohnsoncreativeI also went and bought the hub after watching this, the hub will not charge my phone, despite the power source I plug into it. Wall outlet or battery pack.
@@DangerousTrucking This hub wasnt charging my iPhone either until I brought out a Macbook power adapter.
Just set mine up and it charges my Iphone 15 Pro whilst recording, just had to connect the power supply to the PD port. Also states it is pass-through compatible in the specs (Pass-through charging up to 100W PD, with 85W PD to host). Odd that some people are are having issues while others have no problems. My power supply is PD3.1 rated if that helps.
Hi,
Do we need any extra lens attachments?
No
I have looked 3x and I can not find the titles you are using in this video on motionvfx lol. Can you please let me know what titles you used for this video?

@@benjohnsoncreative thank you so much
Does anyone know if you can record out to the external SSD in any other format than ProRes 4k 60fps. Could you record 24fps HD to the external drive too?
Pretty sure the Black Magic Camera app will let you choose the storage for whatever you’re doing.
Just make sure your audio is connected *BEFORE* opening the app. This has bit me more than once.
Hi Sir I need your help. I have Irig stream and using iPhone 15 pro with the usb c . Then I bought a usb c hub so while I’m streaming I can charge it. Why still not functioning? Pls help me 🥹
That might depend on the hub you have - what hub did you get?
Where did you plug the dji mic ?
I plugged it into the usb c hub
I’ve tried this setup using my M1 iPad Pro and found that a 30w power bank was failing to provide enough power to keep the iPad charged enough to stop dropping frames for any of the ProRes formats. Works well if I use a 65w ac power brick. Still looking for a battery based solution. Thinking of a NP-F or mini v-mount. Anyone else had a power issue?
The iPhone needs less power so I’m sure this solution is great for an iPhone.
Anything like this for an iPad?
I’ll add it to my list
Imagine mirroring your iPhone camera's view right onto your iPad, topped with a sleek remote start/stop for video recording - just like those nifty monopod remotes. Now that would be the ultimate solo video setup! 🎥✨
I was looking at doing this. The issue is that you can’t mirror your iPhone to your IPad, which is lame. The solution I saw is you need to use a hub with HDMI and use an USB c to HDMI cable from your iPad to your Hub. Then use an app like Blackmagic or Cinema P3 which allows HDMI output. Also you can screen share from your iPhone directly to a MacBook.
Dude with a mini iPad!
You should be able to use AirPlay to mirror your iPhone to your iPad and ditch the mirror.
@@chriscech6880 That's exactly what I do... Iphone Pro 15 to Ipad Pro 12.9 using Filmic Remote. Works a treat!
Doesn’t Filmic Pro app still do this?
Go go gadget iphone
If there was a MagSafe with easy switch to portrait position I would buy it
*_Combine. Gypsy ?_*
Hi! Love your setup. Will this work for an iPhone 14 Pro Max? Thank you.
What about the phone overheating while recording
I recorded multiple times for like 30 minute periods and didn’t have any issues, I think charging it helps and putting more of the record strain onto the SSD
I’m sure it still can overheat but I didn’t have that problem so far personally
I film 60min follow along workouts in one take. If I take it out the phone case and turn screen brightness down it doesn’t overhead. 👍🏼
Work for iPhone 14 pro?
I believe it will only work with the 15 because of the new USBC port
Can one buy an adopter from 14 pro max to USBC and go that route?
how much is everything
Links in description!
At this point wouldn’t a mirrorless camera be easier? What if you get an important call?
Definitely mirrorless is easier, but just wanted to show how to do this with a phone for those that want to
I think if you're going to spend so much time rigging up a cell phone you'd better spend it on a regular camera. the iphone makes sense as a pocket movie camera, as light and compact as possible.
Agreed! I won’t be using this set up for my regular videos but it’s helpful for those who already have a phone and don’t want to buy a camera
Where is the ND filter ((
Made my own USB hub case that has HDMI out, Audio, USB-C Charging, and holds an SSD all at once: ua-cam.com/video/B0M7ohr1d58/v-deo.html
Is this I do not have a clue video ?
I rather carry around my mirrorless camera then all of this
Same here
IPhone and Samsung phones cost way to much $. It's like you're paying 1k more just for it brand.
I prefer those LG phones that have it production stopped. I got a sweet deal, an unlocked with 6 inch screen Flagship phone that weight as light as a feather for 60 bucks used.
This is COMEDY !!! Might as well shoot a real camera lol. BUT, I see how just using this setup is beneficial or cost-saving for some people.
Agreed! I won’t use this for my regular vids buts it’s helpful if you’ve got a nice phone and don’t want to buy a camera
kindergarten is everything...
Are you seriously going to shoot for this? with a matrix many times smaller than the crop?
you will be laughed at on the first shoot
The quality it produces is great especially for beginners
You know there are these thing called VIDEO CAMERAS
I do know that, I’ve got several and lots of videos on the channel about them
Some will never get it
True, but I always have a smart-phone; without the additional cost of a dedicated video camera.
So, at least for me, it is a matter of cost for the little I’d use this setup or a video camera. But with this, I can go from Apple to Android (with a plethora of manufacturers) and will upgrade every few years. Where the video camera is what it is until replaced as well, but only serves one function.
You know, there are these things called BUDGETS.
Some guys that pay thousands of dollars on these big expensive cameras just hate hearing how a relatively inexpensive smartphone can record in the same quality. For most projects that are going directly to streaming, an iPhone will do just fine. The audience doesn’t care what kind of sensor your camera has or about videos comparing the iPhone and a Red. Lighting, color grading and telling a good story visually are far more important that buying an expensive camera.
