On my rig I use a USB hub with an SD card slot for high speed cards so I can eliminate the SSD drive. I also use a small usb-c audio interface made by Saramonic which allows real-time monitoring of the audio during recording. So many possibilities with the iPhone 15’s usb-c port. Thanks.
Note: The USB-C hub mentioned here does NOT support pass-through charging, so you can't charge your phone through this hub. Anker has hubs that do support pass-through charging.
@@benjohnsoncreativeI also went and bought the hub after watching this, the hub will not charge my phone, despite the power source I plug into it. Wall outlet or battery pack.
Just set mine up and it charges my Iphone 15 Pro whilst recording, just had to connect the power supply to the PD port. Also states it is pass-through compatible in the specs (Pass-through charging up to 100W PD, with 85W PD to host). Odd that some people are are having issues while others have no problems. My power supply is PD3.1 rated if that helps.
The BMC app does give you clean video feed output - usb c to HDMI cable to a small FeelWorld Monitor or whatever appeals to me even more than the mirror for a set-up. Also you can air cast it to an Apple TV / box and that works nicely. Just adapting what you have. But the BMC app with the iPhone 15 Pro Max is definitely a game changer for me. BTW - that small rig SSD holder also works nicely with the small Crucial X9 and 10 SSDs. For extended video sessions I have a small rig power bank mount and run that output to the power in of the usb hub. Just so flexible as to what the possibilities are.
Hi! Great video. I built a rig with a Sandisk extreme SSD, a 5000 mah power bank and the belkin USB-C to 4 USB-C port. I no way i can charge my iphone using the USB-C hub. I plug everything as you did in the video but i can't charge while i record video. I take some mistake somewhere?
Love this! Haven't seen others getting DJI Mic to work through a usb-c-hub. Great that it works. Just one question: Why not connect DJI Mic in the available cold shoe on the hub mount where the usb-c-hub is placed? That will cut down on two items (screw + extra cold shoe).
You could def do that but then you’d need to put the hub somewhere It would work there if you did like a 2 port splitter/dongle type adapter instead of a hub But I wanted to include the extra line for power too You could def mount the DJI mic there tho!
@@benjohnsoncreative Thanks for the answer. I was not thinking about placing DJI Mic in the actual mount - but on the cold shoe on top of the hub mount so we'd both have the usb-c-hub AND the DJI Mic placed in the ULANZI ST-07 Phone Tripod Mount (since this also has a cold shoe mount).
just a tip, turning off HDR, the ProRes will be 8bit instead of 10 bit color, with good lighting, that is ok, but if you shoot outside, you will see color bands in the sky once graded
This setup inspired me as I had most of the parts already. However, I simplified it slightly. I had to reorganize things a little since I didn't have the monitoring mirror. First, I attached the SmallRig SSD to the cold shoe mount on the USB-C hub clamp. Then, I attached the DJI RX using the USB-C adaptor directly into the USB-C hub on the end closest to the SSD. Sure, this blocks one of the ports; however, you can purchase some low-profile USB-C cables if you need that fourth port. Alternatively, you can throw the DJI RX on the top cold shoe mount that isn't being used.
Thanks for the tip on the Belkin hub. I bought a Belkin hub with 2 usb c slots and it turned out that one is an input and other is an output. So when i wanted to use SSD and Rode video mic only the one hub out of two worked correctly with my rig.
Kind of spooky how the algorithm sends you exactly what you need lol. I just bought an Apple Watch for monitoring and I see this. The mirror is 100 times better plus the other rig pieces are a must have. Thanks 🔥

Hi Sir I need your help. I have Irig stream and using iPhone 15 pro with the usb c . Then I bought a usb c hub so while I’m streaming I can charge it. Why still not functioning? Pls help me 🥹
Maybe a dumb question, but is the power brick listed in the featured gear list a must-have? Would the regular white USB C power brick I use for my iPhone 15 pro max also work to power everything?
I saw another video where someone was struggling to record to an external SSD while simultaneously using an external mic. Did you run into any issues with that?
I’ve tried this setup using my M1 iPad Pro and found that a 30w power bank was failing to provide enough power to keep the iPad charged enough to stop dropping frames for any of the ProRes formats. Works well if I use a 65w ac power brick. Still looking for a battery based solution. Thinking of a NP-F or mini v-mount. Anyone else had a power issue? The iPhone needs less power so I’m sure this solution is great for an iPhone.
Any recommendations on what iphone to get as a b-cam to the iphone 15? I'm shooting more and more on iphones, and just want to have another one on me for multi cam setups, or for previewing the screen on the first one? Iphone 12 looks like the low cost option or maybe an iPhone 13?

Love the setup Ben! Thanks for sharing this. Only thing I'm wondering is how does it work with the dji mic? Do you have the receiver clipped underneath your shirt? or does it work like a shotgun mic?
I usually just clip it right in my shirt, the receiver has a USBC attachment that connects to the phone via the hub. The transmitter (mic) is clipped to my shirt
