I just built a version of this rig using a VANGREE USB C to USB C Hub-3 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Ports with 10Gbps, 4K@60Hz HDMI Multiport Adapter, 100W PD, 2 USB 3.0 & SD/TF Card Reader, USB-C Splitter. I use it with a Samsung SSD and a power brick and a Rode wireless system. This hub also has a HDMI out, so that I can connect to a monitor when I have a separate camera operator. When using this rig, you have to remember that this is a phone. That means you have to turn on airplane mode so that the phone won’t ring in the middle of a shot. Also, you have to turn off Standby or the phone turns into a clock when the power brick battery charges the phone. The rig is still lighter than my rigged out Sony FX3 and is much less expensive.
This set up you put together is a lot better than the one I put together. I love the idea of using the usb hub and that light. I will add them to my own rig or maybe just build the same one you did. Way to go as usual.
Good video. I have a iphone 15 pro max setup and found that the external SSD is extra weight that isnt needed if youre using the BM app. It stores the files internally through the app and you can just dump the files to your SSD when back at home. Less weight, less power usage.
Thanks for sharinf your thoughts! Yes that istrue, however for recording in a higher quality format duch as ProPres 422 HQ i still recommend using an external ssd due to the lager file size it produces :).
Great idea with the hub, but what must be done, what`s the setup so that the iPhone saves the video to the external ssd and not in the integrated storage?
Once your ssd is connected in the BMC app you can select your external storage. On the Default Camera app it will automatically detect the sad and record it externally.
Thank you for the video and recommendations.. I have used your link to purchase the entire setup... can't wait to start shooting... I do have a question, How do I configure my apple watch so I can view it through my watch like you do..I will be using it on my wrist since it is the watch I use everyday and they don't have the holder for it anymore as you said.
Dude I freaking love you! I literally went and bought almost everything on this list, the rest I already have. I’m so excited to use this for my projects. Only difference is I picked up the new DJI mic 2 for my audio set up.
I have most of the gear shown here but have not used them yet. Bought the older smallrig universal kit a year ago, but after watching the new one with magnetic attachment, ordered the new universal rig from Smallrig. I don't have an iPhone 15 Pro or Promax. Use Galaxy S22 with Filmic Pro League version and the video is very nice. I bought a Magsafe magnet and glued it on the case and it works. I bought the power bank, but too big to fit or it will fit, but the weight is too much. I'm thinking of buying thinner and smaller size power banks 5000-10000 mAh. Thanks for sharing the video. Like small rig and Ulanzi accessories(higher quality).
@@BenettGraezer OK no worries, I'm building a slightly compact version of your setup with the battery and ssd mounted to the back of the phone within the Brandon li small rig cage which I'm confident will fit on the gimbal. I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks again for the video, totally changed my mind about the concept of taking shooting onto phones seriously 🙏
Loved it! Did you update the rig since last year? I am looking to build mine but am wondering whether new gadgets have risen and that you adopted since you posted that video?
On the link for the filters it only has options to buy for iPhone 14 not iPhone 15. Which one can I buy that will be compatible with the iPhone 15 pro max
I experience issues with the files written to the SAMSUNG T7 being jaggy and with artefacts. I'm using this exact same setup as Benett. Have anyone else experienced this?
Not that I know of. I know it exists with gimbal, such ad the dji om 6 that has a zoom/focus wheel but it requires you to use it with their dji mimo app.
Thank you for sharing. It's a great setup, but personally too large. I'm looking for a more minimalist solution for my iPhone 15 Pro and a LaCie SSD. I've also looked at the SmallRig 2791B (future-proof as well), but it's also 22cm wide. Do you have another small solution, perhaps?
Hey Bennett great videos, I took your advice and downloaded the Blackmagic Camera App, but am I missing something as I can’t work out how to just take pictures and not video ?
Thank you a lot for everything. How can I get Apple Logo on my iPhone Pro Max 14 at PRO RES 422 HQ? Rec.709, Rec.2020 - HDR and P3D65 only are shown in Blackmagic Cam app.
Great Video, New to the 15 max pro, But wondering the cage is quite large as it is made for any cell. I would like a cage made just for the pro max, smaller as well to fit nicely
Thanks for the ideas! Do you think, if you're going to build a rig like this, that there's much point in paying extra for a 512GB or 1TB 15 Pro Max over the 256GB?
I thought I knew everything but I learned a lot from this video! Love that HMI light and the way you set up the dji mic and the apple watch was brilliant...
Thank you for your video. I was seriously contemplating using this cage over their older universal one. However, I’ve read complaints about the 15 Pro Max in a case with a lens, will cause the phone to tilt, while in the clamp and it was annoying having to continually readjust the iPhone, leveling it off at frequent intervals. Have you had that issue?Your response will inform my purchasing decision.
Thanks a lot for watching! The clamp does move very slightly due to the detachable design which could affect the leveling. I haven’t found it to be an issue. However if you do need the best stability, I would suggest you go for a rig that has a built in spring clamp such as the older rigs from smallrig.
Since most of us already have a phone with a built-in camera in our pocket, you basically have a “free” camera. Additionally, accessories for smartphones are generally more affordable compared to those for traditional cameras.
You say you attached the USB-C hub with a foam clamp and a 1/4" screw - can you link to that? I tried using a different sort of clamp and it didn't fit well. Yours looks really good!

What is the total weight of all the gear setup? I want to use a Joby gorilla pod but I want to know if the 3Kpro would be more than enough because I feel like the 5kpro would be pretty heavy for vlogging hand handle?
I bought the 2 handles. They come with a tab on each one. I assume I need to remove the tab to activate the Bluetooth. I'm not sure how hard I can pull to remove them. Please help. Love your channel
Do you find that the VND filter mount is obtrusive since it clamps to the corner of phone screen and blocks you from seeing your entire shot? It also makes me nervous to clamp anything to the glass.
The gear is impressive, it's interesting, congratulations on the video. But for the type of content I record, I prefer a minimalist setup for two reasons, the time it would take to set up the equipment, and the cost of all this is already enough for a decent camera. I assume that a cell phone is more for "run and gun" I still liked what I saw in the video.
How are you able to use the magnetic filter attachment with that phone cage? I have the same filter adapter and cage and the filter gets in the way of the MagSafe mount. Edit: nevermind I missed the part where this was an ip15promax. I just have the 15pro. 15 pro owners take not. You cannot use this cage and the filter adapter together.
Thanks to this video I will finally be able to complete the professional video kit for my iPhone 15 ProMax. Unfortunately the link to the Anker Power bank is incorrect. All the best Benett
Hey, great rig.. can i ask if you have any trouble with the phone or Blackmagic App seeing the SSD Drive? I have a Samsung T7 1TB and i'll point the file save to the T7 in the Blackmagic App and if I lock the camera between takes and go back into the App more often than not the T7 has disappeared and even unplugging it and plugging back in can be hit and miss as to how long it takes to pop back up to use again.. I'm just wondering if it's a slightly dodgy drive.. I use a brand new short 40GBs lead so ruled that one out!
I havent experienced any problem so far. The connection has remained stable. You might consider formating you SSD to APFS.For Mac users, APFS is generally the better choice, as it's optimized for Mac systems and offers better performance on SSDs.
One question, what characteristic should the hard drive have to connect it to the iPhone so that the information remains there when recording and not on the cell phone?
With this setup the DJI Mic 2 receiver will need to be turned upside down (180 degrees) to see the audio waves and to work with it normal... How do you do this?

What is the total weight of all the gear setup? I want to use a Joby gorilla pod but I want to know if the 3Kpro would be more than enough because I feel like the 5kpro would be pretty heavy for vlogging hand handle?
I didn’t see a link for the light?
Its on the very top :)
Thanks, that’s really amazing!❤❤❤
I'm glad you like it
The gear is impressive, it's interesting, congratulations on the video. But for the type of content I record, I prefer a minimalist setup for two reasons, the time it would take to set up the equipment, and the cost of all this is already enough for a decent camera. I assume that a cell phone is more for "run and gun"
I still liked what I saw in the video.
thanks. that all rigs may still be hard to find/buy in my country, import is solution!
Great!
Thanks for your comment! Will
Update that 👍🏻
Ok ! Nice rig set up 👍🏼👍🏼🎬🎥
Right on
Hey, great rig.. can i ask if you have any trouble with the phone or Blackmagic App seeing the SSD Drive?
Ah thanks for that, I’ll give that one a go and see if it’s any better.. 👍👍
the link of anker powerbank it's the same of belkin multiport usb. Can you change it? 😊🙏🏻

How to record multiple mic inputs (at least 2 mics) on separate audio channels, without the need of an external audio recording device?
