Two Needle Four Thread Sewing Test on a Singer Model 401A Sewing Machine

  • For fun, I try sewing with 2 needles and 4 threads on the slant-o-Matic 401A. It worked! The hardest part was getting 2 threads through the eyes of the needles, haha. I did a short demo of straight and zigzag sewing and then satin stitching. I think true sewists and crafters could have fun and do some unique sewing using this. Many people already know about double-needle sewing on some Singer machines. I was surprised that the hook could grab 4 needle threads.

    I've been 'binge watching' your 401a videos ever since I found that machine at a resale store for $19.00! (With a nice cabinet) The power cord was missing, so they couldn't test it. But I knew it was a real gem. I've been collecting sewing machines for over 50 years, but I plan to actually sew on this one. I can see a lot of potential in the future.
    Sew On, Andy! 😉

    Hi Andy. Thanks for posting this video. I find the sound of these old Slant-o-Matics comforting, one of the sounds of my childhood. I don’t recall my Nana ever running four threads through the needles. You may well be the first. Congratulations! Who knows what other things will be discovered through this stay-in-place time period? 😀

      The slant-needle machines do make that unique sound. I don't think Singer would ever recommend running 4 threads on this machine, haha. I had fun though and thanks for watching.

      Between that cam stack and the insertable Pattern Discs, it's like a never-ending game of design. Then add in another needle and wooo! Hope you do give it a try and good luck.

      I had a lot of fun that day. The last thing I tried was a satin stitch and it was quite colorful. It made me want to make some 2" buttonholes for a coat or something, haha. BTW, did you see the video you instigated? Thanks again for reminding me to make it.

    Thank you that was a most interesting video.
    In 1972 I made my wedding dress on a Bernina minimatic and the complete bodice was stitched with a double needle and it formed tiny tucks, really pretty.
    I was really interested to see how you were going to do this on two separate needles with 4 threads and I was waiting for something to happen, just on the straight stitch and when you started doing fancy stitches I really thought you were heading for trouble.
    Very interesting, still don't understand, were there two spaces for the needles.
    I had the real double needle in one shaft.
    If I think of that wedding dress now I wouldn't know where to start, but I had youth on my side.
    Keep up your interesting tricks..

      Thanks for the nice comment Anita. in this model there is one large space in the needle clamp so you can one needle or two and clamp them down later. Models of singer change that and went to the true double needle on one post into the needle clamp. Your dress sounds beautiful. I'll have to tell my wife about that. She loves to sew. Thanks for sharing it and thanks for watching my channel

    It was fun to watch your video; it is amazing that the little hook picks up four threads. Also, thanks for giving the link for Nancy Zieman and the link for Singer #22 Overlock fashion stitch in the comments. Great to explore (and I have plenty of time to do so).

      Thank you too, for watching. I had never heard of a double-eyed needle before so it was interesting. I don't know if it would make much difference with the stitch itself. I would also rig up a better system for spools 3 & 4 if i was going to do much of this. Also, if you look closely you can see I missed the thread guide on the way down from the take-up lever. (oops) I think that may have been part of the reason some threads looked loose. As I said, adding a little more tension did help. Take care, Carole.

    I have used two spools of standard thread for topstitching instead of using thicker topstitching thread. I picked up this tip from Nancy Zieman. She knows a few things about sewing :)
    As you say, the needle must have a longer eye to take the two threads. Adjusting the tension up for the needle thread, it works fairly well if you can get the spools to have a bit of resistance to rolling. It works better with old style spools than newer type like Gutermann.

    Thank you Andy. I always play with my machines. Is there any difference between this machine and a 500A. I know the knobs on the front are, and top but I mean actual same wing?? Thanks again.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  4 роки тому

      There is not much difference other than the body style. They changed the bobbin winder (for the worse IMO) and they added a little finger to pull thread off the spool, which they never used again after the 500A/503A models. Personally I prefer the 403A to any of them, but that is from a mechanics point of view, although my wife agrees and she has been sewing 50+ years. She uses a 301A mostly and a 403A for Zigzag and a 50 year old Brother serger when needed.

      Thanks for watching, Marcus. No information on the 507 over here. Terry has a gear changing guide for the 513 - 518 on his site. (use coupon andy-h-yt for 20% off)
      site.tandtrepair.com/StylistLine.html If those models have a similar gearing system to your 507 ( same family) then maybe his guide will work for you. I can't even get a parts list or manual for the 507 which usually means it was not sold here in the US. Sorry friend, not much help on this one. Take Care.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 роки тому +1

      The first time I worked on a machine that can double-needle sew I asked my retired Singer repairman friend about that. He said it won't work well b/c the 2nd thread changes the tension on the bobbin spring too much and the tread pops out of the spring frequently. He said you can try to play with adjusting the tension spring on the bobbin case if you want, but you won't be happy with the stitching. I never tried it. The two needle threads work well because each thread is between two separate tension discs.
