Great video, very knowledgeable!! My grandmother gsve me her 1957 Singer back in the 70's. I used it for years and recently had it cleaned and restored professionally. Got the free motion foot and have the original manual but this video is just what I needed to give me confidence I can do this. Thanks!
Hi I have a singer 404 slant needle machine. It only does straight stitch . The straight stitch is incredible, no skipping no problems! I have done a small amount of straight line quilting and would like to try fmq. Do you think I can do fmq on my 404. .?? Thank you great vid
Hello. They did produce a metal darning and embroidery foot especially for the 401 class machines. It is singer part no 161162 and they do turn up on eBay etc from time to time. Not cheap though!
To be clear, I mean an original vintage part. It is referred to in the original 401 instruction manual, but was an optional foot not included with the machine as standard and so isn't common now we're over 50 years on!
Just purchased my 401A. I am trying to find this foot but I'm concerned with possibly buying the wrong foot. I saw the other video about the wrong foot. What is the best way to know the difference?
Great video ...I've checked my 401a that I got for low low cost and yes it has a steel foot.. hoping you have a how to video on the 401a ..as always be blessed
Suggestion: Another plastic :( foot (goodwill find) that works great is the “The Original Big Foot”. Game changer! It has a purple shank and domed foot with a mushroom cut out. It is available online. The top of the shank is square. I did see others that are not square and I am not sure if they also work. This foot also does not hop as dramatically as the foot in this video does....which made me dizzy. And the foot allows you can see all sides of your work beautifully . I suggest you try it out. That would be a great video update! Opinion: Feed dog switch only needs to be in the “Up” position and not “Unlock” position to free motion. You risk your feed dog plate from actually unlocking.
Vivian R Carpentier that was my question but he didn't answer you. I am still researching a way to use my singer that I purchased in 1994 to do free motion quilting. I unfortunately bought the same foot that he did that does not work.

Where did you purchase the free motion foot for your 401A from? I've been unable to find one.
Thank you, Chris; this tutorial was just what I needed to begin to free motion (my first time) on my 401A. Take care. Danielle
Set your stitch selector to BL. You can get both straight and zigzag by adjusting the red lever.
Excellent information and presentation!! I love how the music starts up when the machine does! Great cover up.
I do have the metal darning and embroidery foot for my Singer 401!

James Rogers has a video using it.
do you need a hoop? for the free motion
Vivian R Carpentier that was my question but he didn't answer you. I am still researching a way to use my singer that I purchased in 1994 to do free motion quilting.
I unfortunately bought the same foot that he did that does not work.
The hoop keeps the fabric stable so you can more easily follow the design and also prevents the fabric from being pulled down toward the bobbin.
Hi! Do you know whether the 401A has a low shank or a high shank!
cross6974 low shank I have one and love ❤️ it
Slant shank
donna fermin Thank you.
cross6974 your welcome
401A is slant shanked.
I think I have a metal free motion foot for my 401A. Have to look for it. Lol
You are using a darning foot not a slant 401 free motion embroidery foot
