I just discovered your site. Christopher -you're terrific! Because of your informative, clear videos I can now fully enjoy the 401A I've been sewing on for 25+ years. I inherited it from my grandmother who was the original owner. It has all the parts from ruffler foot to a bunch of cams, plus the original manual, etc but I was too intimidated to tackle most of the options. Now with your help, I am having a blast. Thank you so much for what you do.

You are the BOMB! WOW!!!!! When I got my hands on my aunt's 401a, I literally sat down and cried, holding it in my arms. I was so grieving although it's been 50 years since she left us. She taught me to sew on this machine. She made dresses for me when I was a toddler on this machine. And we all know, this machine is legendary--epic! But I NEVER KNEW about this--it handles twin needles. I wear nothing but stretch yoga pants, and I have to have them hemmed (quite pricey). I was about to go buy a serger because you know, I'm just done with paying someone to hem yoga pants. I am beside myself. I can't wait to set myself up to use two needles. I'm happy now.

Ahhh Thanks!!! I JUST took out my Singer machine my Mom bought me in 1989, I used it like five times in my life and thought what a cool feature this double needle is! Now I have to find feet to fit it as I seem to have lost all but the main foot.

That is so cool ! I have a Singer 503 and I just looked in my manual and there it was, 2 seperate needles in the needle holder. I also have a Singer Athena 2000, unfortunately, I have to use the twin needles. Since I got my Brother dream machine, I am spoiled with all the features it has other than embroidery, but I still love my 3 vintage Singers

I know this is a old video but I love the videos that you have on this machine so I bought one off eBay. Love it very much. I think you got to do more videos on it. Thank you love your videos.

Interesting! I have this machine (and some other Slant-O-Matics) and this is a great feature. However, I only put ONE of the threads through that very last thread guide - next to the needle. I believe the manual says to do that, or maybe I saw it somewhere else, but I think that is how you're supposed to do it.

Computerized machines have a great failing. They can be affected by computer viruses, and get their memories wiped by power surges. Since this machine is completely mechanical, it can't suffer from those.

Quick tip for you while you wait for your needle threader to arrive - use tweezers for threading. I'm 66, poor-ish eyesight, and threading's no prob with tweezers. It helps to have something light colored behind the needle; I hold up a piece of paper. Ditto for sergers.
My current sewing machines include Singers 115, 15-90 & 66; 3 "modern" machines; and (wait for it) a Seamstress Vibrator (T. Eaton's, 1926, by National Sewing Machine Company).

I had just purchased a 4.0/80 twin needle to try in my Singer 401A. It felt like it was hitting something on the very last downstroke. I decided to go to UA-cam. Couldn't believe there was actually a video for this old machine. I did try the two needles, but would really like the width between the stitches to be a little wider. Do you by any chance know what size twin needle works well in the Singer 401? Also, some other videos said to use one thread spool coming from the front and the other should come from the back. Is this necessary in the 401A? THANKS for any help.
