Hello from Yorkshire in england. Great tutorial video and it's inspired me to make a few of these for my roman candles because we're not allowed to publicly fire shells here in the uk but these would work a treat for roman candles or single shot tubes .
Hey MileHigh I know this video is a couple of months old but I just watched it for the first time and fittingly I just built two 24 shot racks this afternoon. I made mine fan style and one DR11 & DR9. Keep up the great content.
Great build. As far as alignment, I used to have my son hold the boards flush while I drilled my pilot holes for the screws to keep everything aligned. My life changed when I got a $20 nailer/stapler from Harbor freight. Now I can hold the boards in alignment by myself and tack them in place with staples before using the screws. Also makes assembly go much faster now
Great tips I’m thinking of building a 12 shot rack and using the unused fiberglass tubes that came in the two cases of cans I bought this year most will be lit individually with the three excal tubes that I have from the past they are still in mint condition and after the fourth I’ll probably order some HDPD tubes online for next time since the 4th is already about to be here
Your best bet is ordering tubes that are already cut and plugged. I only used Great Lakes Mortar Racks. DR11 tubes are what you need for consumer canister shells.
Good video thanks I am building my racks today for Fourth of July Couple of questions 1: do you think it’s better to put a metal sheet under the tube? 2: I have a mixture of hdpe & mdpe , My friend works for national grid, he can get me mostly medium density
Hi thank you for showing. Great idea 💡 I want to build my first one and have a question What size of pipe ? How tall? And do you have anything in the pvc pipe on the bottom like concrete?
@MileHighPyro-303 that works for me , I got em already in a crapy rack my boss slapped together for me 😆 I want sum clean tho! Lmk what you'll want for just a 6 shot rack thx, and Happy 4th bro light up that sky 🎆
Hopefully this video helps! I think the excal tubes have a wider base, so you may need to use 2x4's instead of 2x3's. I've never shot excals so I'm not positive.
Never ever ever use PVC under any circumstances. Very dangerous for multiple reasons. HDPE is the best for consumer shells, and 2nd best option is the fiberglass tubes that come in the kits.
Will these fire any size that fits or do I need a specific size shell for these mortar builds? I don't order fireworks just pick up a few packs from phantom but would love to do something like this for the family.
You can use this set up for any consumer cannister shells that are 1.75" in diameter, which is the majority of your cannister kits. Height of the shells doesn't matter, Ive shot 4" up to 7" out of these.
@@liamevans6659 so if you are using the HDPE tubes for this rack you will need two bases that are 14 7/8 than you will need two side pieces/wall that are 12 inches flat so tubes stick out the top after you will need 6 cuts of 1x4 wood that are 17 1/4 inch for the side supports and last the stabilization legs cut to your preference of length that’s the last thing I need to add to mine tomorrow morning still don’t have the measurement for it
From a pyro safety view it checks all the boxes. From 50 years of carpenty it is sturdy in it's simplicy and design. Nuff' said.
Glad to see someone elses garage looks like mine 😂. I'm also in colorado.
Nice build and the screws works great thanks for sharing
Appreciate the comment. Glad to share what little knowledge I have, with others.
i work for the company that makes them screws.. They really are the best
Cool video, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was a cool video see
Appreciate it.
That's a great build bro thanks for sharing that
Appreciate it. Some room for improvement, but overall I was pleased.
Nice vid. I like fo put handles on the sides to carry the racks easier.
Appreciate it! I definitely put them on my racks. This one was for a buddy, so leaving them off for him to decide.

Appreciate it! I'm sure yours will be better than mine!
@MileHighPyro-303 I'm going to making them the same as you. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year pal. 🎉

Awesome!! Hope those racks bring plenty of enjoyment!

I prefer screws instead of nails. As long as you're safe and they work, have fun out there!
Nice! I already have enough racks for canister shells. I think I’m gonna build a rack for rockets.
That's my next project as well. Building it this weekend. as well as doing a "finale demo" using nothing but 200g cakes.
Yooo that looks clean 👌 good shit
Appreciate it! Have to clean up a few things, but i like the finished product.
@@MileHighPyro-303 no G that was a clean built and my fault but I'm going to copy that built lol
Thanks! That's the goal, for others to copy it and learn from it.
Man, I totally bombed mine today! I need a mitre saw for more precise cuts!

Great video man! Keep it up.
Definitely will!
What is the full diameter size of the tube? Thanks for the educational video btw, excited to makee my first 6 mortar rack!
Dude thank you I been needing this!!!!!!!
Glad I could help!!
Nice build and my OCD is getting to me also lol! Fix the rack lol 👍
I will i will lol
What diameter and type of hdpe tubing should I buy for shells ??? Going to build a couple this weekend …🎉😊🎉
Your best bet is ordering tubes that are already cut and plugged. I only used Great Lakes Mortar Racks. DR11 tubes are what you need for consumer canister shells.
Good luck with the racks!
Wood glue brother. Makes a world of difference structural wise. I use it on every rack I build 🤙
With the screws I use, I have no issues. Some guys use nails, I would definitely glue with nails.
How long were the 1x4 sides I'm gonna make 3 of these
Those side pieces were 17-1/4".
Good video thanks
I am building my racks today for Fourth of July
Couple of questions
1: do you think it’s better to put a metal sheet under the tube?
2: I have a mixture of hdpe & mdpe , My friend works for national grid, he can get me mostly medium density
Only HDPE!!! No metal needed underneath.
Hi thank you for showing. Great idea 💡
I want to build my first one and have a question
What size of pipe ? How tall? And do you have anything in the pvc pipe on the bottom like concrete?
I had the exact same questions. Looking forward to direction here.
Don't use PVC! Use HDPE. Tube height is 12", and I order them already plugged with 2" wood plug and stapled in place.
Will you ship a rack without the tubes ? No worries if not, good job there sharp looking!
Not something I've ever done. But may consider it. I build my racks for HDPE tubes, won't build for any other specs.
@MileHighPyro-303 that works for me , I got em already in a crapy rack my boss slapped together for me 😆 I want sum clean tho! Lmk what you'll want for just a 6 shot rack thx, and Happy 4th bro light up that sky 🎆
ALL SKILLZ 🛠️
Appreciate the support! Gotta stay learning!
@@MileHighPyro-303 same here just gotta Luv the pyro hobby dangerous but fun 🔥🤙🏾
What material are the tubes???assuming can’t be anything cheap?
Nice just when I was about to start building mines I’m using my excals tubes u think I’ll work fine ??
Hopefully this video helps! I think the excal tubes have a wider base, so you may need to use 2x4's instead of 2x3's. I've never shot excals so I'm not positive.
Yea they got that sleeve over the tube it self and sure did pyro thanks
Very welcome!! Just hit that big 500 mark, keep an eye out for my next video!!
Will do.
Little late to the party, but do you do anything to brace the half frame to the full frame besides the perpendicular supports?
Just those supports are enough to keep it solid. If I made some more accurate cuts, I'd feel much better about it. But as is, it works great.
The tubes… what size and what at the bottom ? Are they just hollow?
HDPE DR11 12" tubes with a stapled 2" pine plug at the bottom. Ordered them from great lakes mortar racks.
Can you use regular
PVC pipe
Never ever ever use PVC under any circumstances. Very dangerous for multiple reasons. HDPE is the best for consumer shells, and 2nd best option is the fiberglass tubes that come in the kits.
Thanks !! what diameter is the most common for the tubes
Where did you buy your tubes from? Are they corked already?
I buy all my tubes from great lakes mortar racks. I won't buy from anywhere else. And yes, they come plugged with pine plugs.
Awesome, this was a great tutorial for building a rack thanks for the video!
sorry second question how did you cap the bottom of the pipes?
I buy them already plugged from Great lakes mortar racks
What do you use for a base under the tubes? Or is it just straight wood?
The tubes themselves come with wood plugs. Then they just sit on the 2x3 base of the rack.
Where do you get your hdpe tubes or do you make them?
I buy the tubes precut and plugged from Great Lakes Mortar Racks.
Hey bro I really liked this video i too want too build few racks for 6 inch airel shells can you please make a video on how to make them
Do you mean 6" cannisters, or true 6" display shells?
@milehighpyro-303 did you have to trim down the 2x3 width wise or are they good to use as is?
Used it as is, no trimming.
How do I get the tubes ?
Various places sell them, but I will always buy mine from Great Lakes Mortar Racks. Love the quality and the blue tubes.
Will these fire any size that fits or do I need a specific size shell for these mortar builds? I don't order fireworks just pick up a few packs from phantom but would love to do something like this for the family.

Hi how much for a rack that holds 12 shells ❓
If you're local, dm me on IG. I don't ship these unfortunately.
so you said your base board was 14 7/8 and the side supports were 17 1/4. my question is how did they end up being flush on the top?
No I think he said the base bird was 14 7/8
@@takeovaLA yeah typo on my end
Still confused about the dimensions thought
@@liamevans6659 yea I was trying to get all the measurements and had to think twice on that one but figured it out lol
@@liamevans6659 so if you are using the HDPE tubes for this rack you will need two bases that are 14 7/8 than you will need two side pieces/wall that are 12 inches flat so tubes stick out the top after you will need 6 cuts of 1x4 wood that are 17 1/4 inch for the side supports and last the stabilization legs cut to your preference of length that’s the last thing I need to add to mine tomorrow morning still don’t have the measurement for it
Promo code is for Great lakes???
No, it's for backyard-pyro.com
@MileHighPyro-303 OK thanks
what type of pipe is that?
Only use HDPE!!!
