With Donald passing away today, I had to come back to this scene. I learned how important it is to be there for your kids as a Dad. I am raising my grandson and he made a simple request yesterday. My inclination was to say no because of inconvenience.i relented and said yes. 2:30 It just hit me. This is when Conrad sees himself in his father. After his breakthroughs in therapy, he senses that his father is like him; vulnerable, self doubting, taking himself to task for not realizing when he could have helped someone. I always loved this final scene between them, but it really hits me now just how closely they’re finally brought together as father and son.

Beth loved Conrad, but his suicide attempt brought more "mess" into her life. She is so brittle she would shatter if she really felt her grief. When Conrad hugs Beth, it is a out of love, but also to tell her he forgives her for her coldness, and inability to show her love. Forgiveness is a mighty thing, it releases the victim from pain, guilt, anger, and stagnation. Forgiveness forces the forgiven to be honest with themselves. Beth wasn't ready for the brutal honesty that she needed to face Bucks death. Oddly Calvin and Conrad will grow has father and son, Beth's growth is hers to decide.

When Redford was developing the film he would go to the shore and look out over the ocean. He kept noticing that a lone figure would make their way down among the rocks then would sit and watch the crashing waves.
He eventually made his way down to meet this person. It was Mary Tyler-Moore. She had recently lost her husband and took to going to the sea shore. Redford offered her a role on the spot. He said she had the exact look he imagined for the mom.
I think like Katherine Hepburn in The Lion In Winter both actresses used their roles to vent and process grief. Hepburn had lost Spencer Tracy after spending years trying to watch over the tragic and troubled man.

Recall Cal's remark--to himself "The yard seems smaller without leaves..." He could have said "Life seems worthless without illusions..." but he's a real person only now just becoming aware of his subconscious. That observation came from deep inside of him. Calvin is the one who had the strongest belief in the Jarret's common illusion of a happy marriage and a happy, solid, perfect family. The second half of the film is about Calvin's growing awareness that all is nowhere near perfect. Mr. Redford has directed many successful films, but this is the one for which, as a director, he will be remembered. The Blu-Ray edition of the film was recently released. Redford supervised the transfer from the camera negative himself. Get it and watch it carefully--the detail is astounding--especially his use of color to suggest mood.

This film is a masterpiece. I was not around back then but I doubt a lot of movies told a story about psychology & the problems in an upperclass suburban family. Beth was all about surface & not any kind of meaningful connections esp with her son. Basically the only two survivors of bucks death were calvin & conrad. Beth may have well buried herself with buck. Conrad being very much like his mom tried to take himself out. He hated feeling anything much like beth. But he changed he went to a good therapist & grew & learned. Beth was incapable of change & she obviously was destroyed when her favorite child buck died. One scene she went into bucks room looking very melancholy & conrad started her & she screamed " don't do that " then she put herself together quick & tried to have a surface stranger chit chat with conrad & he tried to connect with her on just something as simple as trigonometry in school & if she found it tough. She did not want to connect on any level & just said " actually I dont know if I u took trig then says oh I bought u 2 shirts their on the bed & ran into her bedroom. Another sad scene was she saw her son sitting outside & she is watching him debating if she should go outside she does & again all surface level " are u cold? U want a sweater " & conrad starts to try & talk about a memory of buck & she shuts right down. She changes the subj to a neighbors dog. I felt sorry for beth bc she was trapped & refused to get help.

The dad said the oldest needed constant correction. Since he was her fave she probably became conditioned for tough love. All his trophies and awards were probably his way of trying to gain their approval.
But his recklessness put him and his little brother in danger and the guilt caused him to give up. Thats what the younger was trying to keep from the parents, that their special boy gave up. And hiding it from them nearly destroyed him.
The mom may be too rigid to accept that her too firm a hand created a troubled hero favorite son.

As long as a parent loves their child, that's the most important thing for a child. Parents can make mistakes but if a child senses that their parent really loves them, they will forgive the parent and will love them forever. And that's what Conrad knew about his father - that his father really loves him and really wanted to do what's best for him. That's why Conrad loved his dad so much and forgave him for any mistakes he did.

Calvin shows his son the protective side of fatherhood. Yes, he yells at him...but he does it so much love and care. You have to be strong to be a good father, you also have to be loving, generous, and compassionate. Calvin and Conrad have a father and son bond, they can grieve and grow together. It would have been interesting to have a Part 2. What happens to Beth? Does she really come to grips with Buck's death? Can she become a loving wife and mother? What is her relationship with Conrad? He had grown into an strong and emotional steady young man... Can she be the mother he needs? Beth loves her son, but doesn't know how to love him through her grief...she is lost in a sea of controlled anxiety.

It strange because I've never watched the movie and knew little about it now until a long-time friend said that this is her favorite movie because it reminds her of herself. Her mom, who I knew as well, passed away of cancer last year and I always knew her to be a good person. I don't see too much correlation between my friend and Conrad however, I see similarities between Beth and my friend.
