  • Painting a glowing sunset or painting a glowing anything is just a matter of getting the values right. I'll show you how I approach a sunset and the steps I take to make sure it really appears to emanate luminous light from the page.

I literally felt panic through most of this video! This was such a great lesson on letting watercolor be watercolor. My goodness, what I have thought were "ruined" paintings in the past were just lessons waiting to be learned. Thank you!

Ugh, I wish I could subscribe to your channel and see this video earlier. I tried to paint a similar scene for my final at my watercolor class. However, I didn't know where it went wrong and I botched it. If I have seen this before begin working on that final project, perhaps I'd achieve a much nicer result. I'm gonna try to re-do the project again. But this time I will try my best to imitate your techinque.

This is such an important tutorial! Capturing the glow from a streetlight, a backlit window, or distant sunset - some of the toughest things to create and get right! After watching this, I had to go back to the start and click forward again (I did it about 10 times) just to see the progression... unreal. Thanks for this one, Steve! So great! :)

Thanks Mark. Encouraging comments as usual. Glad you picked up on the application of how this technique would work in so many glowing light situations. Thanks as always for your welcome and attentive input.

Well Steve not only was this a very good demo but I got a couple of really good belly laughs too. I love when true artists show they make mistakes. It gives the beginning artist hope. Your best quote was “well I didn’t intend to make this a what not to do video” . I love the painting but it was almost perfect when the bright colors where still in the foreground . It looked like a body of water with reflections. Anyway I’m going to try this soon as my watercolor sunsets well to be kind to myself - are awful 😂

This goes to show us all that even a painting that initially looks like it is heading downhill can be salvaged and looks beautiful when finished. Especially when you know the correct techniques to compensate when the paint has a Mind of its own. Cheers!

Loved how this turned out! Sunsets are so enchanting and I like the way the puddles made their own form in the middle ground there. I have the black velvet rounds in several sizes but would love to try a flat wash brush. It seems to do a lovely job. Enjoyed this! Great video as always Steve!

I love watching you calmly paint through stuff that would have me swearing and assuming i had ruined the paper! If i watch enough of these maybe i will eventually catch on? Also nervous when you spray....im scared of spray moving the paint too much or spotting and yours just works!!! I spose you are going to say i have to practice.....but i feel like im saving lots of paper by trying to undrrstand more before i try new things. Right?

Oddly, working through my "mistakes" often result in being the most interesting aspect of the Painting. Learning to "push thru" when hitting obstacles has taught me "not to give up" & just keep going. It also has taught me about "letting go". These "Life Lessons" I learn thru my Art Work often re present themselves when I'm not standing over a piece of paper holding a Brush. If one is introspective & completely honest with oneself, Painting is worth an infinite amount of Therapy. One could even say the Painting is my "witness". The best part is when I'm trying to recall one of these slices of wisdom, I just go back & look at the Painting. The thoughts &/or insights I had are often recorded right there along a Tree Line or in the Prussian Blue shadow of an old Bucket. :)

Steve, as a faithful, longtime subscriber I've spent many of my formative painting hours with you in the past three years. This was quite special. To watch you attend to the challenges of an upright work surface was akin to watching a skilled tightrope walker suddenly find himself on the tightrope. So informative and my heart was in my throat a few times with excitement at the perils and dangers you skillfully maneuvered. To a lovely end (again). Ongoing thanks for all you do, and how well you do it! I too am re-watching this, paint brush in hand, surface FLAT (tho' you don't get the drama of the drips as you demonstrated if you work it too flat)...

Dianne Trese glazes are transparent layers of color added to already painted areas that are dry. The glaze can darken or change the color underneath.

I've been working on sunsets for the last week. I received permission from a local photographer to paint a sunset with 2 sailboats in the foreground. I was more panicked by the sailboats, but quickly learned it is the background that had me in turmoil. Six sheets of watercolor paper later (front and back) and a dozen UA-cam videos, I found your "Sunset Glow" video. I've been a fan of yours for the last 4 years and knew in a heartbeat you could help me. As I watched your tutorial, I felt panic more than once while watching this vid...."hey I thought....this is exactly what I was experiencing". Muddy looking background, paint running, paper rippling! Your calm demur and constantly moving hand helped me realize one very important thing. Don't feel like you have to accomplish your background in one attempt. I took the best looking practice piece of mine and controlled all the paint from there on. I misted, I dabbed, I stroked, I swept my hand. Light strokes, soft edges, and using a my rendition of a sterling edwards brush, I was able to resurrect a passable copy. Onto the final piece. I didn't feel like rushing. The one trick you taught us was, let the paper dry, mist and work in sections. The misting won't disturb the lower layers, and glazing can go on, layer after layer. Whew, what an important piece of knowledge you shared here. Thank you!!

Hi Steve, how did you know I was watching here in rainy Scotland?? ..... thanks so much for all you fantastic knowledge and generous spirit in sharing with us..............I do have a wee question, Not really about watercolour but very artistic in nature. Could you suggest how I can cut a cardboard frame for around pictures. I know you can buy pre cut picture frames but I need at least 15 of them for a wee art craft group I support, so if I can cut these myself it would be helpful...... also what kind of framing tape do you use?. Again thank you so much for you tutorials 🙏🏻❣️

How did you avoid the sky from turning green when you added it wet on wet on top of the yellow and orange?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Рік тому +2

Blue and orange don't make green. Yellow was laid in first then the orange which acts a bit like a buffer next to the blue.

Does anyone know some good videos explaining value to somebody very sloooow (me)? I get that it's dark vs light (or is it bright??) but I just can't apply that to colours. So this video has a high value yellow/orange and a low value green/blue? I have watched so many colour theory videos but my paintings are still so flat and rubbish.

Contrast and value is everything even more important than color. The challenge is to be able to see them then call up (or reproduce) any value from dark to light. It takes practice. Value can be expressed in a scale, darkest to lightest. You can create scales as practice. Usually a painting can be categorized into 5 main values (roughly). I would practice putting various colors into value scales. Here is a video where I describe that practice. It's essential and it boils down to mastering water and paint ratio then seeing the values in your scene and reproducing them. ua-cam.com/video/IFenH6TdSuw/v-deo.html

@@mindofwatercolor Thank you SO much, I really appreciate the response, and so quick too. I will check out that link. I think I was thinking that a bright blue would be a high value blue, but actually that would be a mid value blue right? And the value scale is white-black? I will definitely do some exercises.

@@harrieth7003 you’re welcome. A value scale is darkest to lightest period. It can be any color or black to white. Value can be easier to judge in grayscale sometimes.

Excellent demonstration and explanation there 'The Mind of Watercolor.' We have an ocean front property with sunsets reflecting in our back yard as your painting shows. Awesome job.

Really great light to dark and capturing the sunset and maintaining it. I find I can get the look but as I add more layering the sky goes to rubbish. In acrylic its somehow easier to manage. Great look!

Hi Steve, I enjoyed watching you create this painting with it's great contrast effects. These lessons are pleasant and insightful.
Looking out just under the central clouds, I see the main feature impressions of a face turned toward the right. I tend to see random images embedded in paintings, (through pareidolia, of course) but I do wonder if some painters are doing it unconsciously, via a similar primal effect.
I'm glad that you can use the white stain sponge, to lightly wipe out the lower area tape bleed. Those sponges are mighty handy with watercolor.
    Thanks,
    Dean

Wow, when you added the green suddenly it all seemed to POP. What a beautiful painting. I like that you showed the mistakes. It makes us LEARN in a different way. LOVE the teachings and all the insight. Your insight of reducing the value makes so much sense. Really simple ideas, yet so incredibly important in the end result. Looking forward to trying this too. I am really liking your techniques and your teaching style. Thanks for taking the time to teach us all.
