- A dip pen can hold much more than just ink. I'll use watercolor in this case and its a great technique for fine linear details like tree branches. Let's take a look at how.

Wow! I hadn't idea that you can use watercolor with a dip pen! I do calligraphy and love dip pens and couldn't quite master thin enough lines in watercolor using a paintbrush. Thanks so much for sharing! I've never seen this before!
Steve, PLEASE KEEP THIS CAMERA ANGLE! Being able to see your palette and mixing is awesome! Especially the magic that happens there.
I always learn so much when I see the palette, mixing, brush-loading, etc.!!
I agree with Josh and Mary - This is a great view to facilitate learning!
Won't always but I will on occasion. It requires two cameras and greatly increases editing time which is not always available.
The Mind of Watercolor If you do a great job, we can nominate you for an Oscar....😎 🇬🇧
I'm loving this technique, it's something that my Wife would go crazy over. So I better not let her see it or she'll be giving me orders to branch out in every room of the house. I used dip pens at school over 50 year's ago and never picked one up since, well today I have one with a range of nibs. This is how I dropped across your channel, thank you for the watercolour idea I'll definitely be giving it a go.
Personal favorite…Where you got everyone hooked on flex nibs! And your intro to spontaneous painting! And for me now, The fountain pen rabbit hole! Lol! Thx Steve. You’re such a Blessing to so many people. Also, love any paintings to do with the Southern US! Like Hawks, and pine trees and Charleston! 👍❤️🙏🏻🖌 Messy Mendy from Ga.
One of my favorite techniques that I have learned from you. The ability to draw fine lines without using a brush is an incredible addition to my arsenal of watercolor techniques!
I tried this for the fist time last night and I was blown away how effective it was. Thank you so much for this video. I review so many instructors and I always come back to you. I LEARN from you. You and the late Grant Fuller...... Thank you so much for your VAST library. I have used your Amazon page to purchase and will be signing up for contributions... Thank you so much
I love it! I used to write a bit with this type of pen in my primary school, but not a lot, and I miss it!
Awesome! Love this! Thanks for sharing!
Very inspiring! I painted on and off for years. But just worked to support my family. This video has reminded me of what I wanted to do. Create. Experiment and have fun painting.
Magic watercolor forest! Thank you!
You probably won't see this comment, but just in case, I want to thank you for the inspiration and your hard work. I was inspired by this video and I tried the technique and it blew me away. I showed my painting to my creative group and they were very impressed. They even made photocopies of it! I am a total newbie at watercolor and these kinds of videos really help. I like tips and tricks that will make my journey into watercolour more interesting. So today, my third ever watercolour painting was a total hit and all thanks to you. I gave them all the name of your channel. Thanks again.
I pretty much see every comment. Don't have time to respond to many but happy to hear about your results.
Great technique. Thanks for sharing. Going to check out my dip pens now..
wow, it looks as if you were having so much fun with that!
WOW!!! JUST WOW!!!! 😘😘😘😘😘
That is super cool!
I thoroughly enjoyed this lesson but I am really writing to say that I am also a believer and I paint cards with a verse on the back and give them away,. When I saw that you include scripture at the end of each video I knew I was in the right place to learn how to paint more watercolor cards for others. God bless you and your wonderful art ministry.
Lahle Ehrlich 🙋🏻♀️me too!
Me too!🙏💗
And me! 😁❤️
and me!!
What a joy to share with others in this way. I run art workshops for our congregation where we paint together as a form of reflection and worship. Next one will be themed around John 3.16 as we lead up to Easter. Bless you...S
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
Thank you Steve.....for ALL your wonderful videos😘
So much great information in here for watercolorists experimenting with ink. I know I got a great deal out of it. Thanks for making it and including your materials so it's easy to research.
Been using a dip pen with my water color, love it for trees, thanks for the tips. Learn so much from u
I am pleasantly surprised at how much of a difference it made just putting those light colored branches in among the dark ones. Beautiful! I think I'll try this.😊👍
I have not used a nib since art school! I’ll have to try that again.
I am always amazed by your videos! Lots of good tips and techniques! Thank you.
Awesome painting! You have talent. Full watched.
Love this technique! What a great way to get some fine details with watercolor! Also, love , love love being able to see how you work your pallet!!! 🤗
I have watched this video many time with pleasure. You are the most relaxing and informative teacher on the planet. Thank you.
Very cool. I tried it and it was a lot of fun. I will do more of these. Thanks so much for the demo.
I like this method of painting. With your choice of colours. They are nice.
I like the idea. It is like having only one pan for any and every colour you will ever need. It also gives a look more similar to ink and wash style, which I love so much. Thanks.
I did one of these myself. I had fun and realized it's not as difficult as painting from a photo, and enjoyed using the pen. This one will not go into the bin ( trash can). 👍
Nice!! It comes to life
Thank you very much for the detailed description about the dip pen. I am a beginner in watercolor and I get to learn a lot from your videos. Thank you
Steve, I sure wish you would repaint that first picture 💞💞💞. Love the snow scenes.
Thanks a lot for this demo.. I love to spontaneously draw and this encouraged me to do it. I greatly appreciate your comments and techniques. Don Sylvester Houston, TX
Steve, thank you so much for another great video. I wondered why my dip pen wasn't holding much liquid. I have "seasoned" it & now it works very well. I have learned so much from you over the years. I can never thank you enough for your videos, all the time you donate to educate watercolorists throughout the world. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Awesome technique !
que gran idea, plumilla y acuarela. Great idea. Congratulations, great sensitivity and sense of depth
Always a great pleasure to watch your videos, Steve 😊
I never thought of using my dip pens with watercolor, can't wait to try this!!! Thanks!
Brilliant
Awesome. I love your spontaneous paintings. Also like the dip pen with watercolor technique. I would think it easier to draw the fine branches as you said. I find drawing tree branches very relaxing. They just go on and on. Will definitely try this. Thank you.
What a beautiful technique---and it's all watercolor! Fabulous!
You’re psychic! Was just putting off drawing some bare trees for fear of not achieving the wanted detail. Back to my drawing board ~ thank you!🙋🏼♀️
This painting is beautiful. I never thought of trying this but I am going to now Thank you so much.
Also, winter trees are the most beautiful. You get to see the HEART of the tree, the personality, the bones. I love trees more than anything and winter trees with snow are the best. Again, thank you.
Love your videos....your art....and you have beautiful hands!!!
Amazing! The guoache added do much depth to the painting. I have to try this. Thanks!
I loved watching you fill the nib with watercolor. I've never thought of this! Fantastic! Thank you!
Beautiful! Absolutely delightful!!
Love this technique! I used to dislike winter with its bare trees but have come to live the lacy essence. You do it so well.
You read my mind!!! I was thinking about buying new nibs for my dip pen but wasn't sure which ones to buy so I didn't. Thanks for the Video!
I love writing with fountain pens and dip pens. Now I will try "painting" with them. Very cool, thank you.
beautiful painting and music!
Wow that works great for flower or leaf veins, will try over damp watercolor. Thank you.
What a great technique, thank you.
Can we say, WOW!? Awesome technique! I never thought to use a nib for watercolor paint. Fantastic!
Those white trees. :-)
OMG.. so beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing your skills 😍
These pieces are so absolutely beautiful

I really don't know how to thank you Teacher, this is just what I was looking for in these days, the righel is still so difficult for me, but I love dip pen from childwood and I have so many nibs...this morning with your lesson you replied to my search, that's incredible! I owe so much to you...Grazie

Simply breathtaking
🌸thank you so much! I would have never thought to use water color paint with my pens🤯, I have used ink to sketch in some details but paint would look so much better! Can’t wait to try this!
I appreciate that you give such honest tutorials and recommendations. I especially appreciate that you share your faith by putting scripture at the end of your videos!
Enjoyed watching the steps. The gouache at the end really added a lot of depth.
very much enjoyed this as i have just been to a ‘using inks workshop ‘ day and had assembled my pen nibs.... now i have another project to have a go with - thanks Steve!
Excellent idea Steve. Coincidentally, I just bought a really nice watercolour sketch book.
Now I know what I''m doing this weekend.
Thanks.
wow..glad I discovered you...thank you!
Very beautiful and inspiring! Thank you.
Breathtaking!
Awesome vid and art and so helpful!
Thanks, I use fountain pens, but I can see why using a dip pen can be fun.. I find it challenging to be random when sketching tree branches. It is very easy to make repetitive marks..
Love, love, love this painting.! I must try it
Beautiful! I love this technique. (I prefer instruction videos without music, although the music is very pretty.) The style is gorgeous! Thank-you again for sharing.
Thank you
Your talent as both a teacher and artist are so appreciated. A bucket list of mine is to attend a class of yours or at the very least personally thank you for all you do for the furthering of my love for watercolor. Thanks!
Beautiful results!
Thank you so much for the pen drawing lesson. Loved it!!!! Have to get one! can you do a tropical scene please! Thanks soooo much ! you are great!
My mind is blown. Definately a why have I never thought of this moment! Thank you for sharing. I love your content.
Always love your demos!
Love love love this! Thank you!
Absolutely love, love, love this!!!!
Thank you, now I know what to do with the dip pen I got for Christmas last year!
I love these kind of experiments
Awesome! 💙
Already hunted down my nibs and have my wash on paper.
Thank you so very much!
I love throwing something a bit different into the mix, especially when I'm having and uninspired creative period. And this fits my taste and interest perfectly.
I really like this technique! Seems like a great option for fine detail. Never would've thought about it. Thanks for the video, and the verse!😊
Fascinating!
Awesome idea and probably one that I never would have thought to use! I can think of several uses with a dpt pen now like power lines, fencing, window frames, and those fine details on lighthouses. Thanks Steve!
Hi, I'm a traditional artist in the UK. I love watercolour, I've done this technique, and it's brilliant. So glad you placed a few lights to bring balance to your piece. It's a simple technique, and if you change your nibs, you can alter a lot of values and bring dark and light at different thicknesses.
There is Acrylic ink too and that's great with nib work to. It also doesn't clog your nibs, which watercolour paint can.
Have subbed, thanks for a great tutorial.. :-)
Great vlog. Never realized you can use a nib and watercolor to paint and create nice textures.
Stunning! Love it !
I love this never thought of using water colour with dip pens, it works great. Thanks so much for the video.
Stunning! You never seem to amaze me Steve. Thank you not only for the additional knowledge but the enthusiasm and inspiration.
Love this! I just started using dip pens with ink this past October, so I am really looking forward to using them with my watercolours too! Never would have thought to combine the two. Thank you so much!
Beautiful 😊
I love your spontaneous landscapes. They are beautiful! Many thanks, I have learned a lot since I watch your videos.
Thank you! Would never have thought to try this, but will be prepping my pen tomorrow
Love this! Another way to use my dip pens 😃👍
I love this - stunning! Thankyou for sharing! 🙂
I so love your Trees painting style specially those styles in tiny tree patches of three's for depth. The really basic basic beginner stuff. And yet that is so much fun to draw. Rewarding specially when done in fast greeting cards in season colors :)
I usually do this with a creditcard. Lindsay style :P but a dippen gives so much more controll.
Очень красиво, необычно, мне нравятся все ваши работы!
Wow, this really turned out beautifully. Thanks for the tips.
