  • Have you been bending tube horizontally with your ‪@JDSquaredInc‬ model 3 or model 32 tube bender and aren't a fan of bending on a horizontal plane? Check this build of a Model 32 set up to bend vertically. This is also helpful if you have a tight space to work with like a home garage or a small shop. please like and subscribe!

Hi Mike, looks like you could use another sub. Good content, nice shop. I also have a JD2 tube bender, put an air over ram on it and built a rolling horizontal stand for it. Thought of going vertical but decided that if I wanted to put a bend in the middle of a 20 ft stick of tube it wouldn't clear my ceiling. It works well with air over but just too slow having to reset the pins to do a 180 so I'm planning on doing a 4" cylinder and 5hp motor/hydraulic pump and a hydraulic tube end clamp to make things go 1000% faster. I bend tube for a living for the last 38 years and only use my JD occasionally, my every day bender is a Ben Pearson MC 59HS.

Would be down for making this. My only issue is I don’t know how comfortable I am with hydraulic. Been using the same bender horizontal forever. I like the idea of vertical and the stand to potentially still go horizontal and mobile but I would need to go hydraulic for that to happen.

Man, the air over hydraulic ram is definitely the way to go. It’s much faster than hand cranking it, but not too fast that it’s out of control and imprecise. The drawback is the weight. If you wanted to go back and forth between vertical and horizontal bending it can be done but it will take some work if you go AOH. I forgot to say it in the video, but the head tube that usually rotates the engine will need to with be cut and leveled or pull need to shim the backing plate to get the frame vertically on the bending axis, I went with shimming. If it will help you make a decision on going hydraulic I can post a short in real time showing the speed of the bend. I’m positive you’ll feel more confident about making the switch

@@MPFabworks my concern has always been spring back with the hydraulic. I feel I have a better feel for it manually. I could be wrong as I have zero experience with hydraulic. Bought my JD back in 08. I don’t mind the exercise for sure, especially since I’m getting old but the idea I could make it mobile and switch between horizontal and vertical seems really hard to pass up.

I think if you want to make it mobile, your choices are definitely going to be full hydraulic or air over hydraulic unless you can anchor the stand down so that you can crank on it by hand. But going with the air over hydraulic ram is probably the least expensive way to make the bender mobile swag off-road sells the mounting bracket for the ram, and harbor freight sells the 8 ton hydraulic ram, both in manual or air over hydraulic.

@@MPFabworks If I do it it’ll be how you have it. I was thinking could I make anchor points for that stand. Sure wouldn’t be too hard but seems like a what’s the point of even being mobile then. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@spartancrown honestly, I think it is the best way. I like being able to drag the bender outdoors in front of the car I’m working on and bend there instead of walking back-and-forth out of my garage. The orientation, whether it be horizontal or vertical is to the discretion and preference of the user, but going AOH beats the hell out of hand, cranking any day of the week and twice on Sunday. If you go through with the Bender stand, tag me in the video, or tag me on Instagram at @mp_fabworks. I love seeing what other people come up with.
