Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu has said that the only way the war in Gaza will end is with the complete destruction of Hamas, the pro-Palestinian terrorist group that controls Gaza and was behind the October 7th attack.
But Pulitzer prize-winning author and New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman argues that much of the horror that's played out in Gaza over the past six months goes back to a devil's bargain that Bibi has maintained with Hamas over the past fifteen years. "Netanyahu always understood that ... having a strong Hamas in Gaza is the best way to ensure a weak Palestinian Authority in the West Bank." In a wide-ranging interview for this week's episode of GZERO World, Ian Bremmer sits down with Friedman to try to chart out an imaginable (and palatable) ending to the Middle East's bloodiest war in years. "[Netanyahu] is now hostage to a far-right in his coalition that has told him that anything that smacks of a Palestinian state or even progress toward a Palestinian state...is a no-go. We'll throw you out of power.'"
So what can people do who consider themselves both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian? "The most important thing you can do to be pro-Israeli, " Friedman tells Bremmer, "...is to be for the removal of Bibi Netanyahu by the Israeli people." And the most pro-Palestinian thing you can do? "Be against Hamas and for the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah....Because if that project succeeds or makes progress, many more things are possible in terms of what can happen between the Israelis and Palestinians."

Anything or anyone else will lead to calls for patience, have confidence, wait and see and the slaughter will go on, the settlers will push even further. Today Nethanyahu is the villain and exposed. Stopping Israel demands the same sanctions as those against Russia: no arms sales, exclusion from the USD payment system, close the European and USA borders to Israeli imports, international travel ban and confiscation of assets outside of Israel. Is there any reason this can be done to Russia, North Korea or any rogue state but not to Israel ? If there is such reason, spell it out and find the heart of the matter.

I feel so SAD. These are two men I deeply respected and listen to.
They know better. They are here claiming to ignore that there is an unarmed civilian political wing of hamas that the IDF is executing without due process. It is so evident to anyone paying attention that Israel is methodically executing the medical personnel, starving the population and making sure that those not yet killed, die of their wound and disease, and there, they are sitting talking about Israel defending itself.
Even them lost their moral compass and repeating Israel talking points without even realizing it.

  • @jmhorange

Feels like Friedman is from December 2023. Netanyahu is the problem? Try the Israeli government. Still too much focus on Hamas. "They built tunnels that they could have used to protect civilians, they didn't prepare the population or give them warning about the terrorist attack. Hamas Hamas Hamas, it's all their fault." The Israeli government knew all this when they decided to cynically help keep a terrorist group in power to prevent a 2 state solution. And look how that blew up in their face. Moreover, unlike Israel, we have never had any relationship with Hamas, because they are a terrorist group, the question is what is Israel going to do to end this war?
Both Hamas and the entire Israeli government need to go. Israel a so called democracy, can't even bother to stop the illegal settlements in the West Bank to not anger Palestinians during the war. You know, try to win hearts and minds. The Palestinian and Israeli people deserve better. And the US needs to start thinking about sanctions, and internationally, possibly a peace keeping force over Israel, Gaza and the West Bank to allow for a 1 state solution with Jewish and Palestinians as equal citizens.

The American taxpayer pays for, not only the weapons and munitions delivered to Israel, but also the illegal settlements in the West Bank. And these are a prime instrument in the land grab, the dispossesion of Palestinian lands and of ethnic cleansing.
No sooner did the US Congress approve 14 billion for Israel, did Netanyahu announce the construction of another massive amount of houses for settlers in the West Bank. Was it 30.000?

Fridman's suggestions of "what's best" for Palestinians (against Hamas) and Israelis (against Netanyahu) are very paternalistic because he thinks he knows better than big majority of people on either side.
While many Israelis are against Netanyahu on some topics, on the specific issues of the Gaza war and opposition to the Palestinian state, vast majority of Israelis are more, not less hawkish than Netanyahu.
Similar with Hamas - many don't like the result, but still large majority of Palestinians not just support Hamas, but also specifically support what Hamas did on October 7th. Many on the West overlook the fact that apart from Hamas militants, hundreds (or thousands!) of "civilians" took active part in the attack and atrocities, while other tens of thousands celebrated in the streets of Gaza, gave away sweets and some (who was close enough) took part in mutilation of hostages, alive and dead.

@@RyanSemmel77 Not really, it's clear Israeli citizens are radicalized just like Palestinians under Hamas. The difference is, in no small part due to Israel propping up Hamas, there's no possibility that a genocide can occur against Israelis because no matter how much Palestinians hate Israelis, they don't have a country to carry it out, but because Israel is a country, a genocide can occur against the Palestinians.
I don't blame the Israeli people though. I blame the Israeli government for radicalizing them. In any other situation a government that propped up a terrorist group and then had a terrorist attack would collapse. But because the Israeli government has convinced its people over years that Palestinians aren't people, that they must be destroyed at all cost, the government still stands because Israelis really want this war. The Israeli government needs to go, they had more than enough chances to lead their people toward peace, instead they chose to feed their people hatred and now look at the mess they are in. That's why Israeli citizens didn't care that Netanyahu was propping up a TERRORIST group for 2 decades, because it fit the lie that this would get rid of the Palestinian people, and then it backfired on Oct 7th. This war is a disaster. What should've happened and still can be done is that Israel's allies should've and should pressure Israel with major sanctions/cutting off aid to 1) Allow more aid in 2) Do more to protect civilians, journalists and aid workers. There would not be such intense backlash to this if the Israelis didnt overreact in the way they're currently doing with absolutely no plan for peace. Restraining Israel is the best thing for Israel but no one is willing to make the hard decision to force that restraint. Instead we've seen tens of thousands of dead civilians, completely leveled infrastructure, mass starvation, multiple massacres, mass graves, dead aid workers, numerous war crimes, etc

The US ultimately dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan in response to an attack that killed a little over 2,000. Expecting responses to atrocities to be equal is just wishful thinking. There is a 0% chance Hamas didn’t know that this would be the response when they went through with Oct 7th.

@@RyanSemmel77 It's not the fault of innocent civilians to hear the responsibility for a terrorist attack. There's no excuse for not letting aid into Gaza

@@MuiltiLightRider I’m not advocating for not allowing aid and I’m also not agreeing with Israel’s response (though I do agree they had to and should respond). I’m just saying there is never a proportional response when something like this happens and civilians inevitably suffer the most. The people of Nagasaki and Hiroshima didn’t deserve to be incinerated because their country was an imperialistic monster. It’s a terrible reality.
Also, Hamas had no plan or desire to protect civilians (not that they ever have) after their attack. There is a 0% chance they didn’t know exactly what the Israeli response would be and they did/do nothing to aid their people. Moreover, every civilian death is a win for them in the PR war and creates more vitriol and hatred towards Israel. It’s a fucking horrific situation for the people on the ground caught in the middle.

@@RyanSemmel77 What happened in Japan was horrific, it also happened in the 20th century, before many of the international laws we obey today came into existence. Also is that the criteria we use for wars, oh what we did isn't as bad as another country? I thought the standard was to obey international law? Look at the war in Ukraine. Israel has killed more civilians in 6 months, than Russia has in 3 years. So by your logic, Russia is pretty respectful to Ukrainians, compared to Israel? A country gets judged by its own actions, not if it's better or worse than other countries.
Hamas knew what the Israeli response was? Well Israel supported Hamas for years as part of its plan to prevent a united Palestinian leadership and a 2 state solution. Surely Israel knew when it helped keep Hamas in power that a terrorist group that has had in its charter the destruction of Israel, would carry out a terrorist attack at some point? Did they not see how Pakistan supporting the Taliban lead to terrorist attacks in their country? And surely they knew if their response to a terrorist attack to a was to launch a full scale war and indiscriminately kill civilians, that would turn world opinion against Israel? Israel is not only destroying Gaza, they are destroying Israel. Their economy is hurting, they just got downgraded by Moody's. They are politically unstable, with large protests. Their biggest ally, the US, has the leader of the Senate calling for their president to be removed from office, they've frayed diplomatic ties with a whole host of countries, that will take decades to rebuild if ever. The more we treat Israel with kid gloves and say, "It's all Hamas's fault.", the bigger Israel digs a whole for themselves. They need to take responsibility for their actions. And the US needs to stop being an enabler, be a true friend who tells you what you need to hear, not a fake friend who tells you what you want to hear, to keep the peace.

Poland, Germany and other countries took in millions of Ukrainians and at least they have a country to go back to - breadbasket to the world and an industrial base. Many Gazans wanted out before this conflict viewing it as a jail. I'm struck that no country has offered safe haven for any Gazans. It's as if the world is holding a dagger to Israel's throat.

Friedman is not responsible for Israel. He is always against Israel. Netanyahu is the leader what Israel needs today. Only Netanyahu knows how to manage this war. Does Mr. Friedman feel sorry about innocent hostages? This is first what he supposed to be worry. Hamas supposed to be sooty about his Palestinians people but not Mr. Friedman.
