Columbia University law professor Katherine Franke last appeared on Democracy Now! in January to discuss an attack on Columbia's campus targeting pro-Palestinian student activists with a foul-smelling liquid that led to multiple hospitalizations. Following her interview, Franke now faces termination after two Columbia professors filed a complaint against her claiming she had created a hostile environment for Israeli students; she also became a target for Republican lawmakers.
Franke joins Democracy Now! to discuss the campaign against her, the ongoing crackdown on pro-Palestine activism at Columbia and more. "There's an overreaction by the university, a weaponization of the disciplinary system against students and faculty in ways that in my over 40 years at Columbia I have never seen," she says.
We are also joined by attorney Kathleen Peratis, who is representing Franke along with the Center for Constitutional Rights after she quit her former law firm, Outten & Golden, because it dropped Franke as a client, saying she was too controversial. "What happened at Outten & Golden is the kind of thing that's happening all over," says Peratis.

This country has gone insane. Where is common sense and decency?
Insane, indeed. Even in Russia or China their legal systems do not pile up criminal counts on the basis of mere, and shaky, legal theories. This is what before the shameful trial to President Trump in Manhattan Paul Manafort had exposed in his book, "Political Prisoner." Ambitious prosecutors stack as many criminal counts as they can get from all kinds of codes, make a legal theory to justify this, and secure a conviction no matter the legal merit of these criminal counts.

Courageous Portland, Maine has voted to divest from Israel. Groups have been protesting apartheid Israel’s abuse on Palestinians for decades.♥Portland.
Yes, I was so excited to hear about Portland, ME! They are amazing!
Fathi Hamad, the interior minister in the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip, who cried out for Egyptian assistance during the IDF's operations in the area in March 2012, is another one who certainly had no intention of spoiling Erekat's theories of Canaanite-based land claims. Yet, there can be no misinterpreting his recent statements.
"When we ask for your help, it is so that we can continue the jihad," he said. "Praise God, we all have Arab roots and every Palestinian in Gaza and all over Palestine can prove their Arab roots, whether they be in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, or anywhere else. We have blood ties." "Speaking personally, half of my family is Egyptian," he said. "Where is your mercy? There are over 30 families in the Gaza Strip with the surname Al-Masri, 'Egyptian.' Brothers, half of the Palestinians are Egyptian, and the other half are Saudi. Who are the Palestinians? We have many families called Al-Masri whose roots are Egyptian! They come from Alexandria, Cairo, and Aswan. We are Egyptians. We are Arabs. We are Muslims."
Walid Shoebat, a former Fatah activist claims that everyone he met in Palestine "knew to trace the roots of their families to the country from which their great-grandfathers came." He stated: "We knew full well that our origin was not Canaanite, despite what they tried to teach us," he said. "My grandfather would often remind us that our village, Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem, was empty when his father arrived there with six other families. Today, there are over 30,000 residents in the village."
Now I know where the Jew Haters are.

I’ve been keeping up with Dr. Franke’s case, and while I’m all for free speech and academic freedom, I think there’s more to this that needs addressing. Dr. Franke talks about Israeli students being aggressive on campus, and while any kind of harassment is a real issue if it’s happening, I don’t think the answer is to label all Israeli students based on their military service. Let’s not forget, serving in the Israeli military is compulsory, so to use that as a reason to treat students differently seems unfair.
Another thing that concerns me is how the bigger picture is being LEFT OUT-like how Hamas deliberately puts civilians in harm’s way to gain international sympathy. This is a calculated tactic that’s causing real suffering in Gaza, yet it’s barely mentioned in these discussions. Instead, we’re seeing Jewish and Israeli students being singled out, which isn’t helping anyone.
We need a balance. We can and should talk about what’s happening in Gaza, but we also need to be mindful not to create an environment where people feel unsafe for their identity or background. Free speech is about opening up the conversation, not fueling hostility or fear.
Good comment, but good luck finding balance around here!
If you read Herbert Marcuse's "The one-dimensional man" you will find out that this fascistic college milieu is the one-dimensional society that suppresses true dissent.
nobody here talks about the bigger lies told by israel because everybody watching this knows that what actually happens is israel kills palestinians for no reason and then lie by claiming hamas was hiding with civilians,
there is no such thing as balance between the truth and lies.

so I guess congress ONLY cares about a hostile environment when it comes to Isnotreal students...not Palestinian....

@@פלסטין_היא_הונאה-ע9ח They speak truth and there is no racism. Perhaps you are replying to the wrong comment.
The pretense that the most privileged, entitled, above the law, pampered, powerful people is a victimized group is disgusting. All they have to do is say they don't feel safe and people lose their jobs, their rights, their freedom
Were the 3 students convicted for the skunk attack?
This professor & this lawyer are brave & righteous. I know the lawyer doesn’t want it to be about her or the firm, but I think it’s really important to hear more from her too. Thank you to both of you. Free Palestine 🇵🇸

Immense gratitude for the professors and people of America who oppose censorship - 1st amendment is sacred
This is shocking and terrifying.
"she needs to understand that these students, they have been fighting this enemy and they see this enemy being given 'protected status' from the school and this professor and they are needing to fight the enemy on all fronts, and this professor is trying to besmirch and terrorize these students who are afraid for their own safety, having just come from their honourable service in their military and be intimidated and to be made to feel as if they are under attack for the service to their country, to the point of needing to react to the attacks and harassment by the pro-hamas antisemitic rioters. And this professor is backing them, is attempting to appear as if the harassment to the Israeli students is just acceptable, as they are hampered in their studies, as they are forced to sit in class and have their nation, their religion, their service denigrated and questioned. It is unacceptable, the antisemitism and lack of interest in creating a safe space where all students can learn and proceed in their studies to be members of a productive and democratic society when they graduate."
Or I assume that's what some of the claims are.... Just completely blind to the fact that those same students often go looking for these people to harass, or that there are Palestinian students, students of Palestine descent, Palestinian-American students who are just as entitled to feel safe in their school. Except that their safety is ACTUALLY being hampered, instead of their feelings getting hurt. The desire for divestments or for a ceasefire is not the same as the desire for genocide... And the person desiring a ceasefire has far more humanity and right to claim antisemitism than the one claiming that people in Palestine should all be killed, whether they know the person they're saying it to has friends or family in Palestine or that their home is or was there or that they have any connection to Palestine.... The young adults who are attacking students protesting for PEACE, who are harassing protestors by claiming that they and all the people like them should go to Gaza and be killed like the "rest of the animals" or that the only way to bring peace is to kill and resettle gaza and the west bank.... Those students are antisemitic. They just can't believe that semites are anyone other than them, they have the only claim to that type of hate. They have the only claim to persecution, especially for ones religion or ethnicity... As they do so to another group but believe it is their right because they have a collection of writings that says that God is going to give them that land ... Although, I suppose it might be idolatry to claim England is God. I mean, that might be a little bad in their religion, but whatever, it's the same result, they claimed dibs.
I hate this claiming and decrying of antisemitism for political advantage without any kind of self reflection or understanding. Because no, antisemitism does NOT just apply to the Jewish ethnicity, and certainly not just the religion. Also, a state is not a religion. A state is not an ethnicity. Unless they want to claim that Israel commiting genocide is antisemitic because..... It is somehow in the nature of Jews to seek to commit genocide? It's somehow in the religion that they must destroy all who have what they want..... I don't *think* that is in the religion or DNA of the ethnicity or race. I think that's propaganda put out by a state to influence the people into considering that they are in danger by the mere existence of a people who they ethnically cleansed and who they have allowed little control over their own lives, has constantly been bullied and ruled in an apartheid state.... Basically they took the ways the US handled the native population, and the newly freed black population.... And they say, this worked, we will follow this course. And I guess since the US has never truly come to terms with it's past, how can the US hope to hold Israel to task for doing the same thing? Because it's a different time and people are capable of seeing the horrors of their states past actions and attempting to stop the wrongs they committed. But if the US held Israel to task about it, well, Israel would just laugh and say you can't tell us anything cos you still haven't done anything about your own same actions. Just like the ICC and UN - if the US was okay with the acceptance of all that attempt to hold Israel accountable - well then maybe someone would attempt to hold America responsible..... It's terrible. And america SHOULD be held responsible and choose to reject an attempt to do it again.
I am glad you bring all these guests in the platform. We learn a double standard at its best/worst if it comes to Israel
🙏 Power to these two ❤

Discretion is sometimes the better part of valor. She could have said the same thing without raising a question of partisanship.
This equally scares and angers me. As far as Israel goes, the curtain's been pulled aside, we have all seen who the Wizard of Oz really is.
She said idf not Jewish, not even Israeli. And, they already have an allegiance to Israel first
Wow Colombia University is a shame and members of the congress are complicit and should be supporting the professor for standing up to what is moral. SHAME.
Campus is really terrible now, students can actually get to class, also no one is chanting Intifada and River to the sea, not even a soul flashing swastikas and Hamas flags. It's really terrible that there are no more riots and occupying buildings. Students actually have to go to class and study now. Quite a shame....
So chanting death to jews and destroying univercity property is ok?
The univercity principle leader says its ok on camera.

Zionism, Serial Mass Murder Sociopathic Madness.
Sociopathy, also known as antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), is a mental health condition that causes people to have a long-term pattern of antisocial behaviors. These behaviors include:
Manipulating others
Exploiting others
Violating the rights of others
Lack of empathy
Aggression
Deceit
Impulsivity
Irritability
Difficulty planning ahead
Sociopathy is different from other mental health conditions because it's chronic, while other conditions are episodic. People with ASPD may not seek help or realize they have a problem.
