  • Today we’re joined by Jeremiah Roberts and Andrew Soncrant, hosts of the podcast "Cultish," to talk all things cults and the occult. We look into Gen Z’s obsession with manifesting, tarot cards and “WitchTok,” and what the Bible really says about the spiritual realm. Then, we explore whether we should really be paying attention to signs and symbols. We discuss demonic possession and oppression and what that really looks like, in contrast to movies and television - such as "Stranger Things" or "Doctor Strange" - that portray occult content.

Allie Beth Stuckey, thank you so much for doing this episode! I love how God always shows us what we need to know in His perfect timing! Praise God!
I am a devout Christian trying to teach my daughter in the ways of Christ. My four year old daughter is starting universal pre k and during orientation the school was saying that during after care they will have someone to come in and do yoga and mindfulness with the kids. My soul was very unsettled when I was hearing this like the Holy Spirit was warning me not to let my daughter participate in this. Then I see this episode and these guys confirmed what I already knew about the practice of yoga and how it does not fit into Christianity. I will be writing a letter to the school asking my daughter not to participate in it. I hate to be "that Mom" but my daughter's salvation and safety is my top priority and I honestly don't care what anyone else thinks. It is what God thinks that is most important! Thank you!

As a missionary in West Africa we HAVE encountered demonic possession/oppression. Not many times because our work does not bring us into the encounters much. BUT my husband encountered possession of an American volunteer we worked with. We both encountered a man who is a believer who almost made a bad spiritual decision, who was attacked by an evil spirit and it took time for our prayers to be answered with his release. People in North America tend to brush this off. It has not stopped. It takes different forms in different cultures. Watch for it to be more obvious in N America as our nations give more authority to the enemies of God.

We have witnessed many instances where The occult is not hidden. God is always faithful. In N America, many Christian’s are blissfully unaware of the unseen realm.

Excellent episode, I loved having two of my most listened to podcast come together. I am a year out of the New Age and occultism, saved by God, praise be to Him and I found the Cultish podcast a few weeks after I was saved. It was a great help to me, because just like Jeremiah said, people coming out of that world can feel very isolated and weird, even amongst the most well meaning Christians, who just don’t get our testimony. It’s really a great comfort to listen to their episodes and relate to the different stories people tell, and to be reminded of what the Lord saved me out of.

In elementary school, I messed with the ouija board, my mom being the one to introduce it to me. I was going through abuse by my dad so the things at my moms house didn’t seem so scary even tho they were terrifying. After having my son, I began processing my childhood trauma and turned back to the occult in hopes to find control and that false comfort I had in it during my abuse as a child. Got too involved with witchcraft but thankfully God helped me find my way out like you 💕

Every single Christian I know that has turned yoga into a regular practice as a means to find more peace in their day to day lives and feel better physically, has become more anxious, less peaceful in their interactions and have experienced darker trials to which they have not been able to as of yet overcome.
Would we allow a satanist to come to church just to get a snack at time of Holy Communion? Absolutely not it would be blasphemous. They believe Westerners are doing the same when practicing yoga, as it is designed as partnership with the gods.
When someone gets upset and offended when their practicing of yoga is under scrutiny, the offended party must ask themselves just what are they fighting for? Is it Truth and God's will? Or is it pride and a clinging to that which we love more than our pursuit of Truth and sanctity in God's Kingdom. We need to always examine ourselves and our motives because we can convince ourselves of the deepest lies if we aren't careful, whether we intend to or not.

I was raised by a new age hippie mother and a Catholic father. I’ve always believed in God but I had never read or studied the Bible. So without knowing it I had created this “pick and choose” version of Christianity and I feel like so many women and young people have fallen into this trap.
I am now convinced that not knowing the Bible and filling your knowledge gaps with secular falsehoods lead nowhere fast.
I had crystals, tarot cards, I was taking classes to become a yoga teacher.. after I started reading the Bible even though I felt it was silly I felt a conviction to get rid of all of my crystals and alike items. I thought about giving them away to my mother who still believes in these things but then I thought, I don’t think these are good so I wouldn’t be passing on a gift, it would be a curse. So I just threw them away.
I’m still studying and learning but I’m really amazed at how the Bible rings true. It heals trauma, anxiety and fear. Being a Christian to me is now constantly perusing a relationship with God and I am now so aware that my past self was not a Christian.
I saw a video recently that shows how much feminism has a hand in everything that’s happening right now.
The Bible and the family structure is a patriarchal system and the goal of feminist is to remove patriarchal systems. I read a book by Rachel Wilson that speaks on how early feminism goes back to the occult, witch craft, nature and pagan worship, worship of female sexuality ect.
It’s very interesting and again, rings true. I’ve never called myself a feminist but now I feel that feminism is in the same category as crystals, yoga and tarot. God gave women very specific roles and we ignore them. We have been so brainwashed by the world, we don’t even seek to know what God wanted for us, at least I didn’t.
    Just something to think about.

As a former practitioner of Wicca/New Age, I highly recommend also Ray Yungen's book, 'A Time of Departing,' which looks at how pagan and mystical practises have been employed by the church. It was very insightful for me, helping me understand terms and what people mean. I truly hope it helps equip those who are coming out of the occult, and those seeking to witness to others currently in it.
For those seeking Biblical church homes, I hope the book provides you with understanding about what has happened in many churches and what to be mindful of and stay away from.

A final straw in leaving our former church was when ladies thought that drawing an elaborate “prayer” labyrinth on the back outside patio was a good idea for a family worship night. My husband (who was a deacon there)and I came in and washed it off immediately when we encountered it the next day (we didn’t attend because I already had misgivings) When I confronted the preacher he said he wasn’t aware and wasn’t there. People were offended when I told my concerns about using pagan ways to worship the one true and living God and Savior. They said things like , “But we were praying to Jesus while we were doing it.” And “No one there was practicing paganism”. What a mess. We belong to a solid 1689 LBCF church family now, the only reformed church in town and feel a safety within that confessional unity. Here anything like that would be held immediately up to the scrutiny of scripture and would be squelched.

Speaking of people overreacting about symbols, I bought anointing oil sold by messianic Jews for my mother, and one of my coworkers (pastor's kid) was freaking out because it had a star of David as one of the symbols on the packaging. She went on and on about how I should stay away from such things. I pointed out that she openly talks about how she lives and sleeps with her boyfriend all the time and that she's straining a gnat while swallowing a camel. She was focusing on such small details and proudly talking about how she's breaking one of the ten commandments. When you mentioned that overfocusing on symbols can take people's eyes off Christ it reminded me of that.

I definitely don't agree with the sentiment that Satan is already bound, and that we are living in the fulfillment of the Kingdom. Scripture tells us that the devil himself, as a roaring lion, prowls around, seeking whom he may devour. What we are seeing looks nothing as what the Kingdom was prophesied to be, during the time that Satan will be bound. As the late Chuck Missler used to say, "If Satan is already bound, his leash is too long."

I have no stake in yoga, but I noticed some discrepancies in Jeremiah & Andrew's line of reasoning with it. They state that you shouldn't do it even if you are not practicing the spiritual aspect of it because it's innately spiritual, and even say "should we redeem child sacrifice in Jesus' name?" Not even remotely in the same category as physical exercise. But then when it comes to what TV or movies to watch they say "it's up to your own conscience." Also, the complete dismissal of the argument of meat sacrificed to idols because "yoga isn't meat" was frustrating.
I also have to point out that many of the leaders of Apologia come from a background in martial arts, and they posted a video on UA-cam about how beneficial martial arts can be if you separate the spiritual practices from it.

I am thinking that Stranger Things and other magic/witchcraft like shows, which describe so much of Hollywood and entertainment, would be a hard NO. I am surprised at your answers. They seem to lure people into the magic and that world. And the thought of such strong and prominent Christians saying that it’s ok could be a stumbling block for the weaker. With Yoga, I think the best way to sum it up was when Andrew said, "These are the poses of the Idol." That, for me really simplified the whole thing. Doing the poses or signs of an idol that is not God worship. It may be unintentional but as we know, this is a tactic that has been used throughout the ages. Isn't this exactly why discernment is so necessary?
I have seen so much demonic symbolism and normalization of it in tv shows. Netflix is huge with this but it goes way back. I remember watching "Charmed" It is so difficult not to be exposed to this type of stuff.

“Be aware (of the spiritual realm), but not impressed by the powers and principalities of darkness…” Dean Sherman has an excellent study on Spiritual Warfare. As with anything, we are to Acts 17:11 all things, all teachers, and hold all things up to the Word of God. Teachers are men too, and they are not to be esteemed above Christ.
Dean Sherman does a great job explaining that we have parts of the Body that never discuss our adversary or the powers and principalities of darkness and then the pendulum swings to the other side, where individuals blame everything on the devil (devil made me do it - when in reality, we have a sin nature and flesh that must be examined). Keeping all these things in mind, we are to be “standing firm and sober-minded…” We have a very real enemy, but an awesome, powerful King of Kings to which we are to worship, adore, and imitate.

Do you mind telling me how you got to that interpretation of Rev 20:2-3? What are your eschatological beliefs in general; do you believe in the Rapture of the Church, what do you believe about the book of Revelation itself and the Millennium or Millennial Kingdom and/or the Millennium temple, written about in other books besides Revelation, like in Ezekiel?
PS: If you believe we’re in the Millennium/Millennial Kingdom now, what would be the reason to let Satan out of the bottomless pit after the thousand years is over? (Rev 20:7-10)

I studied some of the history of yoga and found that originally it was specifically a form of breath work and meditation intended to awaken a "kundalini spirit" in the body, there was no physical exercise involved at all. Several of the stretches known in modern yoga were actually taken from Scandinavian exercise programs in the 1800s during a time when physical exercise was becoming more popular. Yoga (the original form) was waning in popularity at the time, so in an effort to revitalize interest in the young ppl by capitalizing on the popularity of the growing trend towards physical exercise, they incorporated the movements and expanded it as a way of drawing more ppl. But yoga purists of the era looked down on it as a lesser form of yoga because it wasn't as focused on the breathwork+meditation aspects which were the real gateway to spiritual evil. So I think the exercise itself is fine and beneficial, it's the other elements that are harmful.

Those are just a few examples. Do I still use the stretches and not call them what they are? Do I stop doing them? What do I replace them with that is not still those positions? I believe we should use greater discernment than suggesting that it's fine for a Christian to be watching Stranger Things. Those comments made me lose a little respect for these guys. Stranger Things is basically horror genre and watching such things causes trauma to the human mind. Do you believe that it pleases the Lord for Christians to be watching such darkness made by evil men? The last few generations who have grown up with violent and evil tv and movies are desensitized and we now see this programming as "normal." If you ever take a fast from these things for a few months, you will be shocked at what you have been watching and have allowed your children to be exposed to. Trauma and fear are used for mind control. There is a reason certain types of shows and movies are being created and promoted. It's not to bring glory to God or to edify His people.

Crystals/gems in an aesthetic sense should be just fine. God made these and they speak to His power and majesty.
That said, if you personally struggle with viewing them as having special power or anything like that, then it may be a good idea to get rid of them even if they are not evil things. If they distract you from Jesus, then they will cause you harm.
We can make an idol out of anything, so it’s good to be aware if anything is filling that spot in your life, no matter how innocent a thing it is.
You can always pray for wisdom on how to approach these things too.
I personally think that all the incredible things we see in nature should make us more in awe of God who created it all. If I’m remembering right, in Revelation, there is a lot of gemstones or similar described as being a part of the new Earth, right?

Amen, will pray for you, I suggest starting with scripture, start reading John’s gospel and call out to God, you will learn about Yeshua, God’s salvation for us to save us from sin. Then read the Old Testament, to learn the origins of Yehovah’s (God) revelation to man on earth. God be with you.

I agree with the person above me who suggested to read the Bible! That is the best way to learn about God, from God Himself! I love using my Rock of Ages Study Bible. I would also look into finding a local Bible-believing church so that you may fellowship with them and be under sound doctrine. Church attendance is God’s will for those who are saved. Hebrews 10:25 “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Online church services can be a good thing until you can find a church to attend, but it’s not a substitute for the real deal. I will pray that you can find a Bible-believing church in your area, but if there is not one I like listening to Reg Kelly preaching videos here on UA-cam

She believes in God and prays to him for these things as well as is able to contact/see the dead when doing shakra or breath work. I was having chronic head pain that went away after she did a shakra session on me. I have no other explanations for my healing and am so grateful for her work. Is this different?

      @stevem815 2 роки тому

No it's not. It's almost entirely modern invention with a few ancient symbols or a bit of scientific jargon tacked on to make it seem legitimate.
The people behind it are generally schizophrenic or bipolar or have some other kind of delusional psychosis that they preach to other people who don't understand that they're dealing with someone who is mentally ill. If you've never met someone who is bipolar and in the grip of a manic episode it's easy to get swept up in their energy, conviction and grand vision for the future.
The ancient symbols or semi-obscure scientific theories are attached to make their modern delusions seem rooted in something legitimate, because they both suggest a deep background of expert knowledge is necessary to understand the claims being made, which leads many people to accept the authority of the speaker rather than investigate further themselves.
The same methods are used across many different fields. It's used very clumsily in new age and alternative theories but once you recognise it you'll see that it's everywhere.

I slowly asked her is she thought she might have an ear infection and told her about a home remedy I’ve used for years and to give it a try (putting hydrogen peroxide in your ear and letting it sit there for a few minutes). I told her, “if it’s infected, it will bubble A LOT!” Next time I saw her she told me her ear bubbled so much and now it was MUCH better! 😅 Not a demon. Just an ear infection!😂

I appreciate this channel as well as this episode. I appreciate consulting ally's opinion on many current issues and weighing that in as I navigate life. I appreciate that she feels a need to defend truth and expose that which is not true. And as I watched this episode I feel the need to do the same. Please understand that this comment is in no way meant in anger or disrespect. (I feel a major disadvantage of a written message vs a face to face conversation is not being able to sense the emotion with which something is said.). So with all respect and kindness I feel a need to speak a clarification and share truth. On several occasions comments were made throughout this episode implying that "Mormons" are a cult. I also couldn't miss the poster of the temple in salt lake city. "Mormon" is actually just a nickname given by people outside the church. The correct name to be used is The church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints. I must with all respect strongly disagree with the classification of cult. Yes, we believe that God can continue to speak and give further instructions. So yes, we do believe that in addition to the bible there are further words of God. We believe that we as humans cannot restrain God by dictating when he can speak. Yes, we believe in following our leader. We believe God has a prophet on the earth today, just as there were prophets in scriptural times. God is an unchanging and supreme God, he loves all of his children from all times. Why in the most confusing times of the last days would he leave us on our own without a prophet? But going on with the definition of a cult that was given...we are not forced or threatened into blind obedience. We are always encouraged to seek God personally for his confirmation and testimony of truth. And things are not done in secret or darkness. This is a church of light and truth.
It sounded like much of the opinion offered was based on those who are angry and have left the church. What they have to say can be weighed into one's opinion, that is fine. But one must also realize this is only half the story and will obviously be somewhat biased. Has the other side of the coin been examined? Christ taught us that by their fruits ye shall know them. Have the fruits of those who are angry been examined? Have the fruits of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints been examined? I can testify the fruit is sweet, for it is the love of God! Every church has those who have left it and oppose it. Every church also has those who profess to be of it, but who are failing to truly live it's precepts. Christianity will always have those who stake claim in it's ranks, but whose fruits are in no way examples of the light of Christ. It would be foolish to judge all Christianity by their example...we cannot condemn all based on their works. And so it is with the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints. Satan will always fight against and try to defame truth. He will try to have the bad example of the few distract from what the truth actually is. Before one defames all latter-day saints as a cult...have they actually examined what the teachings and the fruits are?
Again, I hope this has not been taken in a contentious way! It is not intended that way at all. I do not believe we can speak for God in anger and contention when he denounces such behavior. Satan is the father of all lies and contention. I first saw this episode yesterday, and in not wanting to stir up anger had decided not to say anything. But then in my scripture study this morning I read Ezekiel 33 and felt that God was asking me to open my mouth. I hope this will not stir anger. But I also realize that God has said if people are angry and revile us for the truth, so they did to Him as well.
I must testify that the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints is the same church and gospel as was here with Christ on the earth. It has been restored with His priesthood power. God has a prophet on the earth to guide us through these troubled last days. Listen to what he has to say. They are not the words of a power hungry or deceived individual. Listen to his words and you will hear the words of truth. Ask God what He says about it. In James it says "if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea. Driven with the wind and tossed.". If you will ask God with an open mind (not expecting that you can tell God what answer he should give you) if the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints is a cult...I know He will answer.
When seeking truth both sides must be examined. If you want to know what this church actually teaches, here is the official website. I don't often comment on things to know if actual links are allowed, so I will spell it out:). churchofjesuschrist(dot)org
Thanks again for all the effort you put into speaking up for truth. My comment was shared in kindness and love.

    @28 minutes about depression.
My mother said it's impossible to be depressed if your thankful.
    Think about that..
Only evil wants us sad or fearful or several other emotions to depress us.
But being thankful in ALL THINGS means happy in the valley of death or riding high on the mountain.
    Romans 8:28.
    All things.
So if someone is depressed it's because they fall short giving thanks as believers should.
In all things give thanks and stand on the promises of GOD.

Very Good! As Christians we must accept this reality that the occult is the predominant worldview and practice. We are now like any pagan nation from the past when testimonies of missionaries seemed so bizarre and strange to us concerning the occult. We must know who we are in Christ and our authority to deal with all of this through the Word of God and the empowerment of the Spirit! I agree that the lost world in America is our mission field and that many are so hungry. I also believe that the charismatic gifts of the Spirit coupled with a solid maturity in the Word of god is the answer. I recommend Remnant Radio for an excellent understanding of this balance. Satan has counterfeited the charismatic gifts. We must walk in them(not abusing them) which will be so refreshing for the New Agers...they want to experience God as well as have Biblical knowledge!!! I am so excited for all the souls we are going to win for Christ! Jesus will build His church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it!!!!!!!!!

It is surprising to see how even when it is believed that having stability or certain economic freedom, people do not stop turning to certain spiritual practices to try to fill their lives, there is still an emptiness inside, something is missing.
That is when you can open the door of your house, your heart and your spirit to the pagan or to the Christian, if the pagan ends up filling your being, in some way you are still exposing yourself to a void and to some kind of danger, because you will resort to mix more pagan things trying to fill some void that they themselves cannot give you.
And if you end up accepting God in your life, we must be careful in our successes and even in our failures, not to let in anything that contaminates our lives and our relationship with God.
At the same time I wonder how many things the antichrist will use to deceive people?
As always, many greetings from Mexico and may the Lord bless you and your families, and at the same time protect you from any deception of the enemy to ruin your relationship with God and your lives.
Let us always turn to him to fill our whole being.

WE (as the Church) are, THE (Body of Christ)... And with that being said, that means that we all have different gifts/talents/things that God Almighty, has blessed us with, to serve him better. Not all brothers and sisters in Christ are called to be Pastors or to have a Ministry (whereas) some may be called to simply point out the obvious that's not-so-obvious to everyone else. I know for me personally, I was completely oblivious to all of the signs being put out there until other brethren kindly did sermons and/or made videos/documentaries, etc. pointing it out, and at that point, it THEN (and only then) did it become obvious. God used those individuals for HIS GLORY, and they helped to OPEN MY EYES AND EARS, essentially God giving me a new set at that point. I hope this makes sense. God Bless you all. 🤗❤🙏
