Love your loose painting style and it's reassuring to see everyone's human and we all make mistakes. Not all artists are generous enough to show how to fix them though.
Great demo! So cool to see the box in use. The dancing robot cracked me up. Haha I gotta get some reference photos together to file. I have never taken my own but watching this makes me want to go hire some models and stock up.
It's fantastic that you are back, Your level of professionalism is evident in the way you can adapt and correct, and your humility and humour are refreshing.Your approach to this channel offers an indsight into your method of work, which will resonate with other artists. Thanks for the time you are giving up to to share your work! Great Job.
I love painting faces but still haven’t achieved the look I want. Watching you helps me to see things I can do differently and get a more painterly loose look.
Hello PtP, It’s tough, isn’t it? I’m still trying to get to the look of things that I have in my head and never seem to quite get there. I guess that’s one of the things that keeps us going. Thanks for watching!
Wow, love the new opening! I love watching you draw... and paint. You make it look soooo easy! I'd go out of business if I owned an eraser company and depended on you for sales, HA! Love seeing the reference you work from while you're working. And man, that box Jared made is crazy good. Watching his video of making boxes, you realize just how much work goes into one of these babies. Seriously though, great tutorial and learning tool. Being such a newbie at watercolor, I marvel at you guys who make it look so danged easy. Nice to have you back on YT!
Always good to see how you work, it gives new insights on so much! Your new palette is awesome, just a great configuration. Lucky you! And clever Jared. Faces are absolutely my nemesis, can see why using a high contrast phoro can be so helpful. Love how you are constantly working and seeing the different planes.
Lindy Ashford Thank you, Lindy! It definitely does help to be able to see strong shadows...and, yeah, faces are tough. They always look good for about an hour or two, for me, before the flaws and things I missed start showing up. Ugh. Thanks for watching!
It's really refreshing to watch an professional artist who explains what he's doing and the reason he is doing it. A quick question, could you use not press paper for that portrait painting. Thanks
Absolutely. However, it's a slicker surface and washes tend to move around when you put new ones on top. I do like the effects of the slicker paper and may try some soon.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! That 'off' placement of they eye stood out to me before you started painting, but I thought you were going to do something magical with your paintbrush to fix it. This video is more invaluable as a teaching tool than a million videos which imply perfection. It is reassuring to see the pros experience the same difficulties we all experience with proportion and offer advice on how to potentially *fix* our mistakes. Brian, your humility and honesty is much appreciated and what keeps me watching!
JT Paar Thanks so much, JT! If you caught the eye before I did, why didn’t you say something?! 😂 Yeah, I caught too many problems too late on this one. It is what it is, I guess. It’s all a process of finding errors and correcting them but you always hope it’s before too late. I appreciate your comment very much! 👍
I am really enjoying this one, I guess it is because, the shadows etc are very sharp with the angle of her face. It was good to see you break it down layer by layer. Thank you for the video.
It is great having you back Brian, love to watch your videos and listen to your thought process. Jared is getting ahead of you on youtube activity, you need to catch up :-) love both of your work. Thanks for sharing
Absolutely stunning! Amazing watching you paint and listening to your thought process. Thank you so much for sharing- absolutely beautiful and so helpful!
Loved this portrait demo Brian! I like how it looks neat and the wet on dry technique, nice to see all the layers. This helps in my own portrait paintings, thank you. Also great that you have your own reference photos! I usually just search on the net for reference photos. :-D
Thanks, Jacqui! Yeah, I recently raided all the photos I’ve taken over the years for various projects to use for portrait practice. I didn’t have as many as I thought I would. I need to take some new ones! Glad you liked the video!
Thank you for such a great video (including your other channel videos) demonstrating your glazing technique in portraiture. I wish there were more of these from you and other watercolor portrait artists. Finding glazing techniques using watercolor portraiture is a bit difficult. Most watercolor artists I see use the typical 3 step method of tea, milk, and honey to produce their portraits such as Marcos Beccari. Eudes Correia appears to have a style or method all of his own; maybe his inspiration comes from the music he hears in his earbuds. The portraits or figure paintings these artists create seem impossible to do by mere mortals. I am hoping that using glazing or layering techniques may provide me with steps that are more attainable by giving me more "incremental" steps so I can control my painting to achieve the image I desire. Does that make sense? Is this a worthwhile process to pursue?
Very nice painting! I love the palette it is awesome! Now there's room for 18. I approach my wc paintings the same way. Lately I have been trying to figure out or discern whether to be ultra detailed or relax a bit. Anyways I find myself lifting later to soften it up and I enjoy your style very much. Great tips and oops fixers.
Hi Jennie... for sure! It's tough to find that balance between realism and looseness. I'm constantly struggling with it and have been since I started painting. I spent quite a few years working in a way that needed to be more realistic. So, now, I'm trying very hard to loosen up and let things go a bit more. Old habits die hard, though.

I really enjoyed watching you work, and that you shared your thoughts on the process. This was so helpful!
Thank you for taking this novice on your journey.

Same here! I really need to start shooting more models and having new stuff, on hand.
Brian Ashmore Studio it’s a bummer we’re not in the same city where we can split sessions ;)
That would be awesome!! 😄👍

Draw Paint Repeat Hey, Steve!! Thanks, Buddy! I’m sure I should have used an eraser much, much more and made more early corrections. 😂

Thanks Brian, great information and nice that you show it even when you have problems and give an idea of how to fix it
Thanks, Gary! I appreciate it.
Very nice demo! Showing the initial sketch and having the reference photo really helps to visualize your thought process as the painting progresses.
Ronnie Maum Thank you for watching, Ronnie. I’m used to seeing you on Facebook. 😁👍 I hoped showing the reference photo would help.

Good stuff my friend--and you know I am lovin the dancing robot :)
Ha ha! I’m thinking about making wind-up toys a “thing” at the end of my videos. Thanks, buddy!
