- Another painting for the 30x30 Direct Watercolor Challenge. This one is a portrait of a young woman.
The app I mentioned with reference of many different people is called Sktchy. Like “sketchy” but with no “e.’

“Sorry you have to see my big head” Omg 😂 I enjoyed this video! Thank you 😊
Kimberly Pusey Artwork Ha, ha!! Yeah, I want to keep my viewers from as much trauma as I can. Thanks for watching!
Hey Brian! This was fun to watch and see the differences and similarities in how we each approach portraits. Its been great having a fellow pro illustrator taking part in this 30x30 challenge and trading comments with you on Instagram. I was interested too in your comments here about your normal portrait and likeness process. Delayed clarity is a great term, well put and so true. I call it having a stale eye. The longer you work on a piece without a break the worse it gets. We're almost done. 3 more days as I write this. Onward!
Thanks Steve!! “Stale eye” is a great term for it. I’ve had so many drawings where I’ve walked away thinking “perfect!” only to come back later and feel like someone sabotaged my drawing. Ha, ha! I’ve really enjoyed interacting with you during this challenge, as well. It’s been a lot of fun! Yes, Onward!! Almost there...
You and me both brother. I've been watching some digital painting videos lately and noticed how many digital painters horizontally flip their paintings to combat the "clarity" problem. I never thought of that. When doing portraits for likeness I used to physically hold them up to a mirror on occasion. Do you ever use this technique to check proportion?
Yes!! I used to keep a mirror by my desk for that. I forgot about using one!
Oh man! That one turned out great!
Jared Loves to Draw Thanks, my Friend!!
Awesome portrait in watercolour. Love it 😀👍🏽
I know that you have years and years of experience but wow so amazing to see how brave you are in using those colors!! I'm in awe 😍😍👍
I'm always afraid to put dark colours so I always end up putting a zillion light layers and it is always too light/not dark enough.
It can be very tiring and frustrating for me sometimes since I'm still learning and clearly I still have a LOT to learn.
Thank you Brian for sharing your process.. It is very helpful 🙏🙏
Elga Benedicta I know exactly what you mean about layering so many colors. I am prone to doing that, as well. I probably look more brave than I am with the video sped up the way that it is. Ha ha!! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I loved this one on Instagram, it's great seeing the process here.
Thank you for sharing ^_^
Liron Yanconsky Thanks so much, Liron!
It was a really beautiful process. Thank you for sharing it with us .
Farnaz Liravi Thanks, Farnaz!! Much appreciated!
Your portraits are just beautiful, you make it looks so effortless, thanks for some pointers that might just improve my work, cheers
Thank you so much!!
Wonderful portrait. Your term “delayed clarity” I personally call “drunk on detail” (or detail drunk) - our mind becomes inebriated with all the details such as shadow placement, tones, light etc no matter how tight or loose we chose to paint. We definitely need time away to sober up and boy it can sometimes be *really* sobering to go away and come back. 😬 Those darn minions “sabotage” our painting in our absence as you say 😂
"Drunk on detail" is absolutely apt. It's like your brain becomes impaired, for sure. ha, ha!! Thanks!!
you really inspires me! thank you so much for sharing you work and pasion.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate hearing that. Take Care and thanks so much for watching.
Thanks man for all your work!
Timothy Gallart Having fun! Thanks, Timothy!
I love the video. Thank you for sharing.
14 Watecolor & More Thanks so much! I’m enjoying your new videos!
This looks amazing! :O
Thank you!
Top, excelente 👏🤘
Amazing work :) you deserve more subscriber .
Kierr Gatchalian Thanks so much, Kierr!
Really enjoy watching you bring those tonal values to life. Obviously, my style is completely different from what you're doing, so it makes me envy (in a good way!) your approach and technical abilities. I look forward to your work, each time. Thank you!
M.D. Campbell Thanks so much, Mark! Yes, so many different techniques out there to learn. I’m the same way...
Man, this really came out so nice and moody and sort of... Neil Gaiman-esque. Really love all the grey that ended up in her face, especially!
Meow Meow Kapow Thanks Meow Meow! I almost did a book with Neil back in the 90s. The comic company folded before we got started but Neal sent me a really great letter, afterward.
Brian Ashmore Studio aw man, that’s a bummer but that’s also awfully sweet of him! Maybe now, in the age of patreon and Kickstarter, if you both actually wanted to pursue it you could. =^.^=
Thanks! I’m sure I’m barely a blip of a memory to him, now. Ha ha.
Brian Ashmore Studio you never know...if you remember it, he may, too.
Wow really dramatic lights and darks and changes as you paint. It is amazing how the stages work to build what you are looking for. Thanks for letting us see the video. If I remember correctly Steve Mitchell uses Sketchy also.
Essie Tangle Thank you, Essie! Much appreciated. Yes, Steve definitely does use Sktchy. In fact it was his channel (The Mind of Watercolor) where I found out about the app. 😉
Brian Ashmore Studio changing the subject, when you do people you use strong layers of color, what about painting children? Would you use lighter colors??
Hi Essie, I would approach children exactly the same way as adults. They may have smoother skin but light, color, and shadow play across them the same way they do on adults or other objects.
Hey Brian! Yep! I often paint with the end of my nose and lose focus on the whole picture. I have been painting too hastily for this challenge and at first was painting too big and putting too much pressure on myself. I have goofed up a bunch, but I am honing some skills here. This is such a great portrait Brian.
Mary Kay Parker Thank you so much, Mary! It’s definitely been a balancing act with the challenge trying to find things that will take the right amount of time and not take up the whole day.
Beautiful! I can’t agree with you more about delayed clarity. I still have problems with tossing perfectly good unfinished paintings because I don’t give time for multiple sit downs or after giving it too much time lose interest in finishing because I feel it hopeless. My goal for the rest of the year is to stop it and persist! Thanks for the lesson. EDIT: dang Brian, look at your comment section! When talent and expertise hits up your comment section.....you’re doing something right! High5*
Erin S. Thank you so much, Erin! Yes, delayed clarity is definitely a thing! So many times I’ve walked away from a drawing thinking its perfect only to come back later and feel like a 3 year-old sabotaged or redrew my drawing. It’s so strange how the mind can mix things up and make you think things are going well.
Amazing work 💛 I enjoyed the process and your insight
Lourdes Ortega Thanks very much!
So nice!
Avisad Ray Thank you!
Awesome portrait. I tried Sktchy and like it, though my portrait turned into a future presentation of the reference!🤣
Mica Busby Ha ha! Thanks!
I always enjoy your videos. This is constructive criticism. I would watch more and often. You need to post regularly once a month, or week make it known and keep to that schedule. You will build a following that way.
Spiroffd Thanks much for your suggestion. I get what you are saying. I enjoy channels with regularly scheduled content, as well. However, my channel will probably not ever be that way. While I appreciate every one of my subscribers, building a large audience is not my intent with the channel. YT is a fun side project for me and a chance to connect with fellow artists and art fans. As soon as I feel like this is an obligation or that I’m coming up with any idea I can just to get a video out, I’ll probably stop. This is fun for me but not something I need to have take over too much time. I hope you can enjoy it for what it is. I appreciate your comment and suggestion. Thanks so much for watching... even if it might not be as consistent as you’d like. 👍
I get it I’m a professional fine art painter. Hats off to you and thanks for sharing what you love.
Thank you
Ah! All my favorite people all uploaded today, the day I have to work an extra shift!
Eh, that's okay, I don't have to leave for work tomorrow until 8, I just won't sleep tonight.
Simon Reese Ha, ha!! Who needs sleep?!
This guy kinda sounds like the voice actor for Joey drew in bendy and the ink machine
Najhera Walker Oddly enough, I think he sort of sounds like me. 😁
Enjoy the video but it would have helped if you would have put a link to the app you talking about there's like a million apps that start with the name sketchy thank you
3369 art Great point. I’ve added a link in the video description. The app is called “Sktchy.’ Notice there is no “e.” Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍
my face when I went to find the sktchy app and it's not available for android :( womp womp
joyelle halliel Oh no!! Sorry. I didn’t realize that.
Do you have an online course ? :)
Hi Gika, I don't, sorry. However, let me know what kinds of things you might find useful and I'll try to incorporate them into future videos. Thanks for watching!
Brian Ashmore Studio :) Thank you! Well there’s a lot of material on how to paint landscapes in watercolor, so it would be great to see more about painting the human figure. (By the way I found your channel because Jared from Jared loves to draw mentioned it on one of his videos, both of you are amazing!)
