  • In this video, I paint a monochrome portrait of one of my favorite watercolor artists, Winslow Homer. I also narrate the process and let you know what I'm doing and why I'm doing it.

    You are quickly becoming one of my favorite artists. I've always followed a lot of people who do like stylized or cartoony work, but I'm finding that I'm becoming more and more interested in older artists who paint realistically and have decades of information in their heads. Really informational, helpful, and interesting. Thank you for sharing, I'm so happy I'm subscribed.

      Thank you, Simon! I really appreciate it. I guess that's one benefit to getting old... all the information. Ha, ha! Take Care.

    Hi Brian. Very nice work! Your channel is new but I'm already a fan. Let me be one of the first UA-cam creators to welcome you to the watercolor painting community here. We're a friendly bunch for the most part. 😄

      The Mind of Watercolor Thanks so much, Steve! I've been enjoying your channel and your work since you started! You've actually turned me on to several items. I'm using the black velvet brushes because of you. I was skeptical (they don't look very "classic") but bought one of the oval wash brushes! I loved it so much I had to buy a full set. Ha ha! Now, I'm using them all the time. Thanks for stopping by. I'll try to comment more on your videos. Take Care.

    I really like the real time footage, rather than a speed painting. Gives a real sense of what you're doing. Thanks.

      Cathy Ferguson Thanks Cathy! I know what you mean. Some of the others have taken a full hour or even more to paint. I didn’t think viewers would want to watch a process video that long. Perhaps I can try to do some shorter paintings shown in real-time occasionally to balance things out. Thanks for your comment!

    I am your follower since you uploaded your first video 3 months ago and your compact mini travel watercolor kit is the best one I saw. You are an awesome artist and you are talented in teaching, as well (that's my impression after watching this video - it was easy to follow the process). Looking forward to see your next video :) Thank you so much for sharing!

    Great demo Brian, learned a lot from your technique and thought process. You got that drawing down quickly and so accurately. I wish I could do that....! Really keen to be able to draw and paint portraits but have a lot to learn and practice. Thanks for the tips.

    #moustachedetail , lol.. Thank you for an interesting video- I'm currently attempting w/c sepia wash paintings and enjoyed watching your process from drawing to the end. I like the spontaneous look here with select details. Your thought process was very helpful & appreciated!

    Ahhhh hero. I learned a lot of what I know how to paint by going to the library and getting his collected works and copying them in sketchbooks. Did you catch the fairly recent exhibit in Philadelphia of his and Sargents watercolor work? It was incredible! They even had Winslow Homer's paintbox which was cool.

    • @brianashmorestudio
      @brianashmorestudio  6 років тому +1

      I didn't catch that exhibit other than online. Looked incredible!! I've seen pics of Homer's paintbox online and had fun studying all the little color names he wrote on it. I'd love to see it in person, though. So, you were able to see it?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum 6 років тому

      Brian Ashmore Studio yea! I mean- it was behind a glass case haha they had Eakins and Sargents tubes and set up too in the glass case. My favorite thing- other than the big watercolors by Sargent and homer side by side was that they had a sketchbook from Thomas Moran.

    • @brianashmorestudio
      @brianashmorestudio  6 років тому

      They didn't let you paint with it?! You would think... I'm jealous. I wish I could have seen that show. My most memorable art exhibit was a year in San Diego when we ran into a museum exhibiting Wyeth's The Helga Pictures. We had no idea until stumbling on the show while out walking in the park. One of my favorite memories. Learned so much seeing those works, firsthand.

      Brian Ashmore Studio cooooool!! He’s another hero of mine. What a cool thing to stumble on. I’ve re read his biography and Sargents a bunch of times. Probably time for another round of inspiration haha

      Linda Fabian Hi Linda! I used 2 sizes of the same brush. A #8 and a number 10 or 12. Can’t remember. 😂

    Being a watercolour colour artist in his time, he looks at the camera with distant on his face. There is no future in this contraption, that only makes black and white images, he thinks!
