I'm a 48 year old male in Northern Ireland and I'm not ashamed to admit that I loved Debbie Gibson's songs in the eighties and I was a big Def Leppard and Poison fan for flips sake. Heck I even had her first three albums on cassette. She was/is gorgeous and I admit I had a BIT of a crush on her.I can't believe that she will be 50 at the end of August.I hope it doesn't sound TOO rude to talk about a ladie's age. Boy does the time fly.

The thing that I always loved about Debbie was that she seemed like a real person, not a diva, like so many of these so called stars today. She always seemed down to earth. Besides a great voice she was a true artist. She not only sang but she also wrote her own songs. How amazing is that?

My favourite memories of my youth are Debbie and looking back how all videos were kinda corny but adorable to me now. I hate this new tech stuff with songs that pass you by and all women undressed. When kids my age made great music. Im going out on a limb here but most of these songs are from when i was courting in country lanes parked up as a young man, and thats why those impressionable years stay with me in music. College, girlfriend first car etc Wish i was 19 again ....... bring back the 80s x

Here is the lyrics so we can sing along with Debbie... thanks for sharing this video. i love this so so much. ❤❤❤
If I were an only child
I would be a lonely child
But baby we've got nothing to lose
I'm standing tall in my own shoes
    I'll take this chance
    I'll make this choice
    I'll right this wrong
    I'll raise my voice
    If it means
    We'll be together
    For a while
I have never had a doubt
But for you I'll take time out
I'll push his love far away from me
And then I'll be completely free
    I'll give up my security
    For just the possibility
    That we could be together
    For a while
If you said jump I'd say how high?
If you said run I'd run and fly
    Just for the chance
    Just for the moment
Should the moment pass up by
And if you ask once I'll tell you twice
    I'll ignore the world's advice
    If we could be together
    For a while
I am taken by your strength
I've thought about it at great length
I thought that I was happy now
But there are things that I found out
    Happiness means greater things
I'll sit here 'til that telephone rings
    Then we could be together
    For a while
    Wait'll I tell my guy
Wait'll I tell my other friends
    They'll all think I'm crazy
    And ya know what?
    That depends
    'Cause I'm crazy in love
    With you
    And everyone's best won't do
    They'll say my hopes
    Will not come true
    But I'm taking the chance
    Because you only live once-
(only live once, only live once)
    And
    There are no guarantees
    But if it means
    There's even a possibility
Then I'll give up whatever it takes
I know I've made some mistakes before
It may be just another closed door
    But we could be together
    For a while
    ❤❤❤

I've applied the lyrics from some of these songs to multiple relationships, in my mind. That is, I have, over time. The songs have outlived all of those relationships. What I love about this one is that it's both innocent and optimistic, but also realistic. Even if "it may be just another closed door", sometimes we have to go for it, and are right to. And, even if we are wrong, at least we get to make our own "wrong" choices. Staying with the more secure option, perhaps in a relationship with which our families and friends approve, may be easier, but that life is for living. Thank you to Deb for sharing the journey with us all. So many memories. 😀❤

If I were an only child
I would be a lonely child
But baby we've got nothing to lose
I'm standing tall in my own shoes
    I'll take this chance
    I'll make this choice
    I'll right this wrong
    I'll raise my voice
    If it means
    We'll be together
    For a while
I have never had a doubt
But for you I'll take time out
I'll push his love far away from me
And then I'll be completely free
    I'll give up my security
    For just the possibility
    That we could be together
    For a while
If you said jump I'd say how high?
If you said run I'd run and fly
    Just for the chance
    Just for the moment
Should the moment pass up by
And if you ask once I'll tell you twice
    I'll ignore the world's advice
    If we could be together
    For a while
I am taken by your strength
I've thought about it at great length
I thought that I was happy now
But there are things that I found out
    Happiness means greater things
I'll sit here 'til that telephone rings
    Then we could be together
    For a while
    Wait'll I tell my guy
Wait'll I tell my other friends
    They'll all think I'm crazy
    And ya know what?
    That depends
    'Cause I'm crazy in love
    With you
    And everyone's best won't do
    They'll say my hopes
    Will not come true
    But I'm taking the chance
    Because you only live once-
(only live once, only live once)
    And
    There are no guarantees
    But if it means
    There's even a possibility
Then I'll give up whatever it takes
I know I've made some mistakes before
It may be just another closed door
    But we could be together
    For a while

For no reason that I can figure out, I woke up at 3 am last night with this song stuck in my head and it hasn't left all day. Strangest thing. But upon watching the video, I was struck by how "diverse" it is - you see people of colour, Latinos - and NO ONE CARED! That's what it was like back in the 80's, none of that mattered - we were just people enjoying good music and having a good time! I wish the current generation could experience what that was like! Debbie had no narrative or agenda, she was simply having fun! Sigh. I wish we could back to that.

Wow this has over 2.3 million views thirty years after this came out. I thought people forgot about Debbie Gibson. Apparently not. She was so massive in the late 80’s. And she was a regular girl with talent. Wrote and produced her own music. Didn’t need to wear g-string and bend over and gyrate on stage the way they all do now. And this song is still amazing. Happy and joyful.
