    OK...Debbie sang, she danced, she wrote, she arranged, she produced and she played instruments. She wasn't just a threat. She was a MENACE. And that menace just happened to write some infectiously melodic songs. OMG! Songwriters today need to hear songs like this...they'd kill for hooks this simple yet this sharp.

    When her album came out, I bought this cassette (1987). I was playing the entire cassette again and again while doing my high school homework each night. So my favorite girl is on iHeart radio tonight. I still play her songs on my home audio system. And many of my favorites of hers were never released. I’m so happy that she is the co-host tonight. She and I are just a few months apart in age, and both from NY.

  • @MasterJediDude
    @MasterJediDude 6 місяців тому +23

    I will admit that, at the time, she was everywhere to the point of annoyance. I was about 18 and I wasn’t into the pop scene at all. She was constantly on MTV and then suddenly, she wasn’t. She was a victim of some backlash as mainstream music took a huge hit. The 1990’s brought in grunge and gangsta rap. Two things that killed what was left of the 80’s. I remember when Debbie showed up to sing with the Circle Jerks at CBGBs in the mid-90s. I was saddened at seeing her try to find relevance again. I realized then and now what we lost. The girl was super-talented and gifted, and that beautiful era of 80’s innocence was gone. So, I look back at this video and see a brighter, more hopeful time. We’ll never have this peaceful, wonderful time again - and that hurts to think about.

      @MasterJediDude 4 місяці тому

      @@nuclearcatbaby1131it was better for her to emerge in the 80’s, as the 90’s devolved into a musical mess for a long time. No pop-friendly at all. No one says, “Hey, remember that great hit from 1999? Or 2005?” I have enjoyed music from the last 15 years or so. The market has allowed many bands and acts to come back. Debbie is accepted more now than she has been in 30 years.

      You struck a chord in me with this comment. I have been really curious as to why the 90s music scene was so depressing, subdued and seemed to embrace the worst in life compared to the 80s, which seemed so amazing with the brightness and optimism despite the bad.

      @MasterJediDude 4 місяці тому

      @@PrairieFalcon I know, right? I don’t think we’re alone in this feeling. Something dark came into the world in the 90’s and has stuck around for every decade. Constant war, depression, lack of civility, depleted morals - it’s been very bleak.

Debbie's vocals, all the stuff going on in the background. I can listen to it a million times and never get tired of it because every time I listen to it I hear something new. This song could easily be the theme of a musical theater production--it is complex, emotional, and displays her incredible vocal range. Back then, as an ambitious young performer myself, I wrote her off. Was I ever wrong!! Go Debbie!

You wont hear todays music in 30yrs time in fact you wont hear it in 2 yrs its just noise with no tune or hook. Hello, I am writing to you from Chile. If what you write is true, I congratulate you, I think it is the right thing to do. I didn't know everything you say about how she was composed her songs and was also a producer. If you allude to J.Lo in your comment, it should also be understood that the world changes and that now they sell other things, there are no longer groups or singers that last over time, the disposable is the immediate.

    I may have been born in the 90's but man songs from the 90's including from the 80's were just so good. I wish this style of music came back in modern day.

    The years of peg legs rolled up sleeves hats and blue jean jackets with fringes and beads and jewels safety pins with beads clipped on 80'S can't be beat .
