Lyrics:
There was a time when
Broken hearts and broken dreams
Were over
There was a place where
All you could do was
Wish on a four-leaf clover
But now is a new time
There is a new place
Where dreams just can't come true
It started the day when I left you
I could never love again the way that I loved you
I could never cry again like I did when I left you
And when we said goodbye
Oh the look in your eyes
Just left me beside myself without your heart
(Without your heart)
I could never love again now that we're apart
When I was sorry
It was too late to turn around
And tell you so
There was no reason
There was no reason
Just a foolish beat of my heart
I could never love again the way that I loved you
I could never cry again like I did when I left you
And when we said goodbye
Oh the look in your eyes
Just left me beside myself without your heart
(Without your heart)
I could never love again now that we're apart
Oh, can't you see I'm not fooling nobody
Don't you see the tears are falling down my face?
Since you went away
Break my heart, you slipped away
Didn't know I was wrong
Never meant to hurt you now you're gone
I could never love again now that we're apart
(Now that we're apart)
I could never love again now that we're apart

Great song with perfect video
Amazing voice
far from it, but I can't exactly "go back to" the 80s, because I didn't exist then D:
I think all you can agree to this, but 80s music was and IS the BEST!!!! My 2 daughters both in their 20s love it as well!!😊
They don't make music like this anymore. 80's was very special miss it so much.
She did it all: wrote all the music and lyrics, and produced her own album! For those who have no frame of reference: it was 1988. Amazing. Love this girl!
Not true. While she did write the whole thing, she didn't produce it. Most was either done in conjunction with other producers or completely by other producers. This tune, however, was done totally by her and it's the best thing on the record by a long shot.
You're wrong, she WROTE and PRODUCED this song ALONE, this song made her the youngest person to write, produce and sing a number-one
MelquiVEVO No, I'm not wrong in the least bit. I was referencing her album, not just this tune. She did NOT produce her own album. The credits tell the story.
She produced the album with 4 persons, but this song she produced ALONE
MelquiVEVO Yeah, you said that already.
The most underrated female artist in history! 16 years old here. Written by Debbie Gibson, performed by Debbie Gibson, number one hit
Nope. She was 17 years and 6.9 months.
Rhianna Barr-Beaumont not very important information
Rhianna Barr Bee sorry but you just have to be right, right?

We were blessed to have grown up the 80’s and heard the music from these “teen idols” like Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. They were nothing like today’s young artists that try to be “cool” and are raunchy, immoral, vulgar, half naked, etc. No tattoos, body piercings, plastic surgery, just humble ordinary teen girls who behaved and dressed like the rest of us, and were clean, chaste, upright, and were beautiful and sexy, but wholesome! Plus they were incredibly talented singers who were genuine and sincere with their music. They were great role models for other teens, and this is what we desperately need now days with the direction that society is heading.

Why is it that once you start listening to these fire 80's hits, you end up binging on all 80's music for hours on UA-cam? Nothing and I mean straight up nothing will ever dominate the music, culture and fads of the 80's! So blessed to have lived and experienced the enlightening 80's. This 54 year old will always be an 80's child!
Right I'm in love with this song I'm 20 and I love these 80s songs I found this one on vevo 80s channel on Pluto TV

I am 58 yo and I have the same musical ADN, I understand you clearly ;)
I remember in the 80s older people saying how crap modern music was and that it all went downhill after the 60s. Now the 80s are the equivalent of the 60s.
What I wouldn't give to go back to 1988! Simple times but the best times!
My 21-year-old daughter even admits that the 80's was the best decade for music.
My 22 year old daughter believes the same.

Debbie Gibson - "Foolish Beat"
In June of 1988, Gibson -- not yet 18 -- made history when this song topped the Hot 100. In leading the charts that week, she became the youngest person to sing, write, and produce a number one hit all by herself. (She still holds the Guinness record among women.) The ballad performance was one of her most heartbreaking, allowing this Debbie Gibson song to strike an emotional reaction to the listener.

Something about 80's music. It has a certain vibe to it.
Do you remember the first time you heard Foolish Beat by Debbie Gibson? I do. It was the song that broke my heart and healed it at the same time. The song that made me feel the pain and joy of love like never before. The song that taught me how to be strong and vulnerable, how to forgive and move on, how to love again. Foolish Beat is not just a song, it's a masterpiece. A timeless classic that speaks to the soul of every lover who has ever felt the foolish beat of their heart. That's why I love Foolish Beat by Debbie Gibson, and why you should too.

Debbie was an incredibly talented and savvy woman- sure she still is. Don't let the teen pop genre fool you into thinking she wasn't a tour d'force in that era.

This song put her in the Guinness Book Of World records as the youngest artist to ever write, produce, and perform a #1 song themselves. She was 17. My friend, the early to mid 80s did feature lots of classic ballards. In fact, it was during that period the original ballards were being released. And just because people hardly remember most of them doesn't change that fact. Artists like Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, George Benson, Air Supply, Kool and the gang, etc., had most of their songs of that era in the early to mid 80s.
Also:
Woman in love-Barbra Streisand-80
Never too much-Luther Vandross-81
Never gonna let you go-Sergio Mendes-83
Ain't Nobody- Chaka Khan-83
After All-Al Jarreau-84
Careless Whisper-George Michael/Wham-84
Those are just a few examples out of my memory. I can present a much more extensive list. But it will take time to remember all those early to mid 80s songs that I grew up listening to.
Music like this just doesn't exist anymore ....👍👍👍👍👍

This is one of the best heartbreak songs ever. It's timeless. It describes perfectly how one feels when a love dies...even now, it still hurts so good, this song. She was the Taylor Swift of the 80's. her voice is one of a kind and her talent, she is in a class of her own. I sang her song only in my dreams acapella for a school concert in high school...senior year 1992.

Broken hearts and broken dreams

There is a new place
Where dreams just can't come true
It started the day when I left you (oh)

I could never cry again like I did when I left you
And when we said goodbye
Oh, the look in your eyes
Just left me beside myself without your heart (without your heart)
I could never love again now that we're apart
When I was sorry
It was too late to turn around (turn around)
And tell you so
There was no reason
There was no reason
Just a foolish beat of my heart
I could never love again the way that I loved you (oh)
I could never cry again like I did when I left you
And when we said goodbye
Oh, the look in your eyes
Just left me beside myself without your heart (without your heart)
I could never love again now that we're apart
Oh, can't you see I'm not fooling nobody?
Don't you see the tears are falling down my face?
Since you went away
Break my heart, you slipped away
Didn't know I was wrong
Never meant to hurt you now you're gone
Oh oh oh
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh

Now that we're apart
Now that we're apart, oh

Gibson wrote and engineered this entire song herself and I think it's one of the most well made pop songs I've ever seen. The way she brings the saxophone in at 3:23 is just simply brilliant. I really do think she's a genius. Don't underestimate what she did; it's harder than it looks. Especially since while it may seem "old school" now, at the time it was exactly perfect.
Gibson was the youngest person to write, produce and perform a number one single, this one.
Great song. Goes hard
We haven't had any pop artist since Debbie. Taylor Swift has written some of her own songs, but nothing like Debbie. Debbie didn't act like a 13 year old girl at a boy band concert, every time she was out in public, like Taylor does! And Taylor's songs are all the same. They sound the same, they are all about the same thing. Some of her lyrics don't even make sense, they just rhyme, that's all that matters in the pop world today. The 80s and 90s pop music will NEVER be ever again. We will never have great songs like these. Is it me, or did we have way more bands and artists to listen to back during the 80s and 90s, than we have today? We had not only pop, but country (real country, not the pop country crap out today), rock, rap, R&B, hip hop, metal and alternative. Now, all I hear is pop, pop country, and rap (if that's what you want to call it). We had so many R&B and hip hip artists/groups back then. Too many to count them all. I cant even name a R&B or a hip hop group today. The days of Jodeci, Boyz II Men, Silk, 112, R. Kelly, etc., are gone. And it makes me so sad. I mean, I hear the same handful of artists on the radio, the same songs. An artist has a new song, the pop radio station in my city plays it every hour, all day. Sometimes twice an hour! Taylor Swift has a new song released, and it shoots to #1. How is that? I'm sorry, but EVERY song she releases isn't that great. Everybody is now conditioned into thinking that every song she releases is just awesome.
Not only in that minute, it also sounds awesome at the beginning of the song, 1 of the best songs of Debbie. I love her. 💖💓
i was nine when i first hear this song. i’m forty now, and this song takes me back to when i was nine every time i hear it. the power of music….
