Hot off the heels of our last video, we are taking another look at the 5800X3D, but this time comparing it to a more price relevant CPU, the 7700X, to see how they compare and which one has the better value when we consider the cost of the whole system you'd need to use each processor.

we’ll see. depends on how long am5 runs for and how much performance youre willing to sacrifice 3-4 years from now. the difference between a 7700k (roughly what was considered top of the line when am4 dropped) was outdated by the time the 3800x dropped. so you’re probably going to be itching for an upgrade by the time am5 is halfway through its life.

Overall, it seems primary thread ipc and clock speed followed by cache helps gaming the most while number of cores is a distant third factor.

I think the takeaway is that if you are building a new system, going AM5 makes sense, but if you are going from like a Ryzen 7 2700x or a Ryzen 5 3600, you can still get a lot of use out of your current components for $340 for a Ryzen 7 5800X3D or $250 for a Ryzen 7 5700X3D/5600X3D. Which is why AM4 has been so amazing.

  • @Invid72

A different wrinkle for me is that I run iTX and while the CPU/RAM prices trade blows, getting an AM5 iTX board is much more expensive than a decent AM4 board. I'm not sure I'd buy AM4 if I was doing a new build though since I expect AM5 to support future upgrades so the extra cost would be worthwhile.

I've been back and forth on this for quite some time now. The 5800x3d is up to around 300 USD again currently and the 7700x is actually on sale for less. At this point its getting late for rolling another 300 into an AM4 system IMO. May as well put that money away for your next platform change. 300 plus selling your AM4 build makes for a better PC for similar money out of pocket presently.

I have the same and live near microcenter so got a bundle to save some when it first was released. I use HWinfo64 and it averages about 60w and that's not even in ECO mode. The 7800x3d doesn't seem worth it nor the others of this gen, not all games can utilize it and i'll play in 4k. It will be interesting to see what ryzen 8k cpu 3d chip does , but if this CPU still gets over 100fps who cares. Anyway , since you have the same chip would highly, highly recomend checking out "LASSO" program. It's free , watch a YT video on it. You can tell your games to stick to one CPU chiplet (0-11 or 12-23). I usually put it on the second chiplet (12-23) so there's no competition and it eliminates any "hitching" or "stutter" that comes with having the two 6 core processors.

Real value of AM4 lies in the used market if you are building a new PC. There are so many options widely available which make prices go down so much that you can get a good condition part for as much as half of the new price. Mobos, RAMs and even CPUs are usually safer to get used compared to GPUs so there isn't too much of a risk involved. Of course used market is widely depended to your region but with the availability of AM4 I'm sure you can find a very good deal in everywhere at this point.
Just to give some numbers, I just gathered up similar systems. Used AM4 5800x3D with B550 board and 32GB DDR4 cost only 66% of a new (similarly speced) Ryzen 7700 with B650 and 32GB DDR5 system. A new 7800x3D system cost more than double of it. Used market for AM5 also does exist but it's still very weak and meager. You can shave off maybe 10-15% off but it might not worth the risks and guarantee terms in big picture.
Of course, I would not advise to build a all new AM4 system right now. There is not much point in that. However if you can buy used, you should be able to upgrade your GPU to maybe 2 tiers higher. That is something you should consider in my opinion.

The real question for most is am4 drop in upgrade or am5 new build. If I were to take the question seriously the AM4 build would be 5700x3d, b550 mb and 32gb ddr4 3200 for 400. Rtx 4090 should naturally lead you to the 7800x3d

If on am4 already there isnt much of a point in 7000 series for gaming right now unless you have money to burn on a 7800x3d. If coming from any pre 12th gen intel or older, AMD 7000 series is worth it. Pretty easy.

I think anyone building a brand new computer should invest a bit more into AM5 due to upgradeability. AM4 while looks cheaper, you are stuck on a dead end platform with no upgrade. Unless you are already on AM4 and you can grab 5700X3D or 5800X3D, then it is well worth it. But building from scratch, AM5 makes the most sense. You can option for 7600/7600X which is cheaper and it performs like 2% slower than 7700X while having the exact same cost as 5800X3D new system.

Sure……..but the monster and well seasoned AM4 platform is now cheaper. This brings alot of others into an affordable gaming PC.

We knew when 5800x3d launched that zen4 vanilla skus would be as fast or even loose out to 5800x3d. Then when zen4 launched AMD themselves pretended that 5800x3d did not exist.
We understood quite fast that if they did not lock down the 5800x3d it would kick the snot out of the zen4 vanilla cpus.
But what the Ming's are those ddr4 sticks? 16-16-16-39 or 16-20-20-41?
For going with am5 I would pick ASRock b650 hdv for 150 €, 6000c30 ram for 150€ and an 7800x3d or if u want to make the AM5 platform zen5 ready an cheap 7500f.
If u are going to get an am4 platform to squeeze out every drop of the perf u need b-die based ddr4 ram, and they are 200 to 300 € now, so not worth it at all.

What do you mean lock down the x3d chip? It's the same as the zen 4 x3d chips. If you let it run like non 3d chips they would be droping like 13th and 14th gen chips. The stacked ram Interposer can not take the heat.

@@mddunlap03 x3d is multiplier locked. The only means to "overclock" is through CO. The chips are very deliberately hobbled, and AMD claims it is due to power / thermal weaknesses in the design, but I am sceptical because Scattervolt did manage the overclock a 5800x3d well beyond stock, and it had no ill effects on the x3d chip.

if you've already got AM4, then a 5800x3d/5700x3d/5600x3d are all fantastic upgrades for gaming.
if you're starting from scratch, go with a 7800x3d. bundles with mobo/ram/cpu are regularly under $480 (esp at microcenter in the USA). significantly better gaming performance than a 7700x and AM5 will last you much longer than AM4
