For those asking - of course the "stock" measurement was done after fixing the mounting fault.
Otherwise we'd have no idea how much of the thermal improvement was due to de-shrouding versus the tighter mounting.
The footage you see from 3:29 was when I first realized how bad the problem was - so I fixed it, installed the original shroud and fans, and re-tested it to give us the "stock" / before de-shrouding measurement.

Also one of the selling points for which I chose strix version of 2080Ti was that extra fan headers.
      But it's quite useless.
It's 4 pin yet has DC control and no way to change it, so if you have RGB fans you get them turned off, also they have quite crappy control logic, by default it's something where it's off until temperature reaches 60*C and it goes right to 100%
Theoretically you can change it in asus' GPU tweak software but it's garbage and it doesn't save profile on GPU, so if you restart the PC it goes away, even if you run the software on startup it still doesn't update those settings.

Honestly I would love that. I'm running a PowerColor Red Dragon 5700XT and to keep the thermals in check (below 80C TJunc in my preference) I have a very aggressive fan curve meaning during games my GPU fans regularly reach 1800-2100rpm and can spike up to 2400. Some adjustments to your video since I deshrouded my strix rx 5700xt myself:
-Asus uses a strange 7 pin sort of fan splitting header. The mini 4 pin you mention is for the rgb on the shroud. I tried to figure out which wires I needed to make a 4 pin pwm signal for the fans, but the fans wouldn't spin. You have to use the Asus software, but that doesn't allow much of an undervolt. I settled on argus monitor and put the fans on the AIO pump header on the mobo. Perfect solution!
    - you HAVE to bend the tabs on the shroud and you have to bend them pretty far for certain fans in order to fit the fans and not get the tabs in the fan blades. Even if you do it carefully, you will damage the heatsink a bit and will probably void warranty if they need to take the shroud off.

    @larsjrgensen5975 4 роки тому

Did the same 1 month ago with good results.
    ASUS ROG Vega 64.
VRM has almost same problem, but fixed with a bigger thermal pad.
3 Fans removed together with the shroud and replaced with 2x 140mm Noctua fans.
Fans suspended with cable ties and long screws to the PSU shroud in a Fractal fullsize case.
Fan outputs also does not work because AMD driver and ASUS controlpanel software fights each other.
A GPU cooler mounting guide needs to be followed, and paste really needs a good amount to fix hotspot problems.
VRMs and hotspot was in the 100c area, GPU throttled down below advertised, ASUS quote: Working as intended.
VRM and hotspot is in the 80c max now and clocks are about 200MHz higher on core and the fan noise is maybe halved.
The Noctua GPU fans are controlled by CPU temp, so when the CPU temp is 10 degrees over idle the fans run at full speed, not ideal but works good enough, the temps can overshoot a couple of degrees before the temp stabilizes with the fan speed, but the temps are still more then 20c lower then stock anyway.

Obviously because of case clearance issue. A graphics card with a 120mm fan would be too tall to fit inside most of the compact cases. If the graphics card used in this video came with a heat sink designed for 120mm fans, it would have never been able to fit inside this case. Any case that can't fit a 120mm CPU cooler won't be able to fit a graphics card with 120mm fans.

      @LiveType 4 роки тому +15

Cost, manufacturing efficiency, and size constraints. But mostly cost. A half decent 120mm fan would likely cost 4-5x as much as they pay for those flimsy excuses for cooling fans. I mean I would gladly pay an extra ~$30-40 if a manufacturer actually adopted them but only time will tell. Why would they spend more on the fans when they can just slap a bigger heatsink on? My guess is the best you'll get is that it becomes easier to mount your own 120mm fans in the future.
Example: Have you seen the fans inside of the Mac Pro? Those are some ludicrously expensive fans in classic over-engineered apple fashion. They're there because the user base won't even bat an eye at the ~$150-200 spent on fans.

just deshrouded my ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER OC Evo in my Ncase M1 and it works like a charm. I was a bit worried that it wouldn't fit as the Evo is 56mm thick and the Strix is 54mm. Its a thight fit, with a bit of upward bend but it fits!
I only have one Mini-PWM to PWM adapter and the "right fan" is not connected. I use a PWM splitter conecting both NF-A12's to the GPU to the "left fan" of the GPU. Ampere-wise it should be fine, the Noctua uses only 0.14A (combined 0.28A), while the stock fans use 0.35A each. Still have them set to Intake though (was too afraid to bend the clips on the FAN mounting....) and have the Dust filter mounted. 0-RPM does also work!
Temps are fine and noise is lower. But not as much as I would have thought. Fans are not spinning below 55°C, so 0-RPM works fine. Will think about Undervolting and perhaps using fixed fan speeds.

In some cases, deshrouding is useful even when GPU is mounted normally, not like this setup in NCase. For example, it's popular on high power Zotac Mini cards like the 1080 and 1080Ti in SFF systems. Those cards are nice but noisy, due to smaller cooler and crappy fans. People have dealt with that by stripping the shroud and fans and simply strapping 2 Noctua fans with zip ties. It's also possible to flash the stock BIOS with the one from EVGA 1080Tis with 0-RPM mode or better Zotac models and you get a very silent mini beast with better temps, better fan curve and zero RPM fans.
You can basically do the same with any card that's powerhungry but has crappy cooler and/or fans. Strip it, strap on the better fans, connect them to the GPU with appropriate adapter and you're done.

When it comes to PC cooling there are so many variables its almost impossible to compare temperatures unless every component is the same. Even then there are variables like mounting pressure etc which will also effect things

Maybe your case isnt high enough off the desk for the air to flow easily. Either that or its your choice of fan.

EVGA Black Edition is 2-slot card? Are you using different case, thicker fans or made shrouds for fans? Because otherwise you should have a gap bellow fans and M1 bottom -- fans don't blow all of the air outside of the case.
Also even with shrouds/proper spacing it's reasonable to think that slim heatsinks work worse with exhaust -- as with such configuration fans pull air through the heatsink from it's sides (and there is less area from side profile).

where are you exhausting to ? sucking air from the heat sink will very rarely be better it only works in the case in the video where the fans can blow the air out the case directly. in a normal case and GPU placement you will want to have it blowing into the heat sinks. . i also thing the VRM temps where higher in the exhaust setup in the video but might not have been monitored in that part of the test.

The Fractal Design Era can also benefit from this sort of mod. The clearance is a _lot_ tighter, but the airflow boost for that case in particular is incredible.

Yes it is possible, I am going to actually be doing it later today. Look up nzxt h1 mods on the itx subreddit

@@TheGaspacho21 Let me know how it goes :) Which GPU will you be using? I have preordered my H1 and am waiting for it to arrive before i buy parts. I am mostly interested in making the H1 as quiet as possible.

I've got a deshrouded Gigabyte 2070 super in my H1 and it made a huge difference to noise/ thermals. I have two noctua NF-A12x15s attached; no issues with protruding brackets but you do have to get creative with zip ties to attach the fans. Felt very crude whilst I was building it but actually I think the end result looks better than stock.
If reducing noise is in your interests I'd also recommend swapping the stock psu for an SF750 or similar - the stock psu isn't loud, but I found the stop start switching in and out of passive mode a little intrusive. Basically do all this :

Forgot that I repasted the cooler as well. No idea if it helped but figured I may as well whilst it was apart, but by no means necessary for the fan mod.

my gtx770's triple fans stooped working so i de-shrouded it and brought a Evercool PB-01 PCI slot Fan bracket for 1 or 2 x 92 or 120mm fans mounted the bracket and fans(2x120mm) with a 1 slot space and it worked a treat card didn't go above 70 in stress tests and stayed around 62 while gaming

    Well done, it's impressive.
My 1080ti's with water blocks are dead silent, never exceed 50 degrees Celsius, and overclock like mad as a result. Having enjoyed custom loop water cooled systems, I can't imagine doing it differently just because of how quiet it runs with a big radiator.

I did this for a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 5700 XT paired with some Noctua fans, all stuffed into a Ghost S1, and I couldn't be happier.

I have a system with an Asus 5700XT. Same issue with the VRM screws being too long. I used plastic washers to sort that out.
But that's not even the only issue! As with your thumbnail, you can see that the backplate is bent higher around the die area - because the stock thermal pads around the die area are too thick! Asus really did a great job with these after-market coolers...

So I tested this with a Gigabyte 5700xt Gaming OC 8gb edition in a regular case using the stock heatsink and setting the card in my second PCIE slot and jerryrigging the fans beneath it on the power supply shroud inside of a Lian LI Lancool 2 with a gap of about 3-5mm.
It dropped idle temperature from 45C to 30C and reliably cools the card under regular loads (this is gaming loads, no benchmarks done.) Temperatures will hover at 75C-85C with junction at 85C-90C.
However with some specific games, this instance Starcitizen, the GPU temp will be around 75C but the junction will still be pushed to max junction temperature at 110C. This was prevented by doing a power draw reduction of -25% and now I feel the GPU runs at a comfortable level of 65c-75C with junction at 85C-90C with it being at near stock gameclock of around 1800-1850mhz. This is with the fans also at full blast using 2 120mm Noctua NFA-F12 fans (what I have right now) and with an open side panel. (I do not trust the air to flow much just from the front because I have a 360 rad to my cpu)
It works but with the 5700xt just drawing in so much power and undervolting being so unstable for me it seems like running it on a negative power draw helps with keeping it cool as once it starts going up there in voltage it'll still be hot af.
This is mainly my concern with running StarCitizen. Every other game runs perfectly fine with stock clocks and 0 changes.

for anyone worried about mounting it's pretty easy to just do it yourself but if not capable of doing so etsy sells a kit with brackets for fans along with a mini 4 pin to a split 4 pin for both of your fans for like 20 dollars i believe. I've been doing this for a few years actually It does work pretty well on most cards but at the end of the day I just water cool everything becuase no matter how much air you throw at it if it's hotspot problems you're having water cooling is the only solution.
