I was born in Ukraine, and lived there prior to collapse of USSR. We had absolutely no dislike between Russians and Ukrainians. Never!!! Most people spoke Russian, but in the country side Ukrainian was predominantly used. And most importantly, everyone knew that our capital was not in Kiev, but in Moscow. I would never believe, not in the wildest dream, that 45 years later Russia and Ukraine will fight in a bloody war. It really hurts me to know that I have a family in Russia and in Ukraine that ones were very closed and now they hate each others. Very sad, indeed. I don’t blame Putin or Zelensky, I think McGregor is absolutely right in his assessment of who is to blame.
I have a burning question for you. What is the difference between the Russian language and the Ukrainian language? I am Canadian and the dialects are different from the West coast to the East coast and when you get to Newfoundland, the accent is so thick you can't understand what they are saying. Are Russian Ukrainian basically the same language with different accents or is it a completely different dialect? He also made a good point when he said that America has problems of its own at home that should be dealt with. This was the same situation when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982; it was to draw attention away from the state of the Argentine economy, and possessing the Falklands is always a good cover. The Uk were forced to fight a war thousands of miles away because if we hadn't we would have lost face, and Britain has still not come to terms with the fact that we are no longer the world power we once were.

When I was in the US Navy we went to Severomorsk Russia in 93. And sitting having dinner and drinks with a Russian Kapitan, Leytenant and their wives we talked about the Cold War among other things. We all agreed we never would want to fight each other, it is our leaders that make that happen. We as people would get along just fine. It was an amazing couple of days while we’re there.

Naive as I am, and a New Yorker, I was swept up in what was being said in support of Ukraine and against Russia. I sensed her sadness, but not for Zelensky and his plans.
You should look at Putin's plans. Putin told us in his essay he wrote on Ukraine in 2021 titled ”On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians“. You can easily find it online; in fact it's required reading for Russian officers. In his essay he says Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia have been one country for more than 5,000 years since Kievan-Rus times and they are only separate now because the founders of the USSR made the "mistake" of chopping them up into separate states under the union in 1922 which became sovereign after the union was disbanded in 1991. He says when that happened Russia was "robbed." And he also says that Ukrainians are really Russians that speak 2 languages, and that them starting to deny their roots and Russian language and Russian orthodox church and become "ethnically pure" Ukrainians who want to join the EU is "comparable to the use of weapons of mass destruction" on Russia because it will wipe out millions of Russians from the Earth.

I served briefly under COL MacGregor when he was Squadron Commander of 1st Sqd 4th Cav. He had a reputation for high standards. Western Europe has had 78 years since the end of WWII to prepare to defend themselves against Russia. But this war isn’t about defending Western Europe. I was born in Ukraine, and lived there prior to collapse of USSR. We had absolutely no dislike between Russians and Ukrainians. Never!!! Most people spoke Russian, but in the country side Ukrainian was predominantly used. And most importantly, everyone knew that our capital was not in Kiev, but in Moscow. I would never believe, not in the wildest dream, that 45 years later Russia and Ukraine will fight in a bloody war. It really hurts me to know that I have a family in Russia and in Ukraine that ones were very closed and now they hate each others. Very sad, indeed. I don’t blame Putin or Zelensky, I think McGregor is absolutely right in his assessment of who is to blame.
I have a burning question for you. What is the difference between the Russian language and the Ukrainian language? I am Canadian and the dialects are different from the West coast to the East coast and when you get to Newfoundland, the accent is so thick you can't understand what they are saying. Are Russian Ukrainian basically the same language with different accents or is it a completely different dialect? Also I completely agree with your comment, just been a question I have been wondering about and cannot find the answer to.

He also made a good point when he said that America has problems of its own at home that should be dealt with. This was the same situation when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982; it was to draw attention away from the state of the Argentine economy, and possessing the Falklands is always a good cover. I was USN, 7th fleet 87 to 89. Soviet Union still existed. Every time they came out of Vladivostok we got underway, even at night. Got pictures of the East Coast of Russia, north of Vladivostok. Spent a total of 77 days in Yokosuka in 87. Haze gray and underway.

You should look at Putin's plans. Putin told us in his essay he wrote on Ukraine in 2021 titled ”On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians“. You can easily find it online; in fact it's required reading for Russian officers. In his essay he says Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia have been one country for more than 5,000 years since Kievan-Rus times and they are only separate now because the founders of the USSR made the "mistake" of chopping them up into separate states under the union in 1922 which became sovereign after the union was disbanded in 1991. He says when that happened Russia was "robbed."
And he also says that Ukrainians are really Russians that speak 2 languages, and that them starting to deny their roots and Russian language and Russian orthodox church and become "ethnically pure" Ukrainians who want to join the EU is "comparable to the use of weapons of mass destruction" on Russia because it will wipe out millions of Russians from the Earth.

I served briefly under COL MacGregor when he was Squadron Commander of 1st Sqd 4th Cav. He had a reputation for high standards.
Western Europe has had 78 years since the end of WWII to prepare to defend themselves against Russia. But this war isn’t about defending Western Europe. It’s about enriching our politicians and their donors.
Col MacGregor seems like an interesting guy to serve under,he strikes me as somebody who's not scared easily and has the classic quality of military leadership. A lovable bastard... As somebody who is not American but knows Russians they don't hate you guys and culturally they think of themselves as Europeans so they are bewildered now about what is going on with the West in general.
I'd say they had 30 years to integrate Russia into their common security and prosperity but they refused to do so. The two sides did not have to be adversaries.
