You just reminded me of the good days of GoT and explained perfectly why I like Oberyn so much. In those days of GoT, it had huge consequences if a character made a mistake and I felt excited and scared for Oberyn to take on the Mountain. I still remember yelling at the screen "finish him" as Oberyn started circling the Mountain. I knew he wasn't safe until the Mountain was dead and then IT happened and Oberyn lost. After that I just sat in silence trying to understand how everything had changed for Tyrion. The next day at school me and my friends talked about it all day. Pedro Pascal put in a great performance and GoT really was at it's peak.
To this day the only part of GOT that really irritated me was Cersei blowing up the sept of Baelor, the holiest site in the realm and not only kinslaying but also murdering the tyrells. And suffered no consequences, of course Tommen but I’m talking about outside forces against her or the commonfolk just literally anything.

"I disagree. I've come to the perfect place. I want to bring those who have wronged me to justice, and all those who have wronged me are right here" What a line. Chills
GRRM plays with Stereotypes and pre-conceived expectations so well, for example Oberyn is like an adventurous bisexual playboy that likes partying, but he has this ultimate and pure goal of avenging his sister, he's an insanely skilled warrior but he prefers to plan things out and murder people with poison rather than just overpower them, it's like he melds all kinds of different characters into one.
Hence why his nickname "THE RED VIPER" is well-deserved. The show frames Tywin as merely taking a shit when he dies, but it's way more sinister in the books.... the implication being that Oberyn was poisoning him.
@@runek100 It's only hinted that Tywin may have been poisoned, because his corpse started smelling really, really bad only days after he died, too quickly for it to be natural rot and people often fainted from the unnatural smell when they came to pay their respects. Tywin did not show any symptoms of poisoning while he was still alive, but this is potentially owed to the fact that the poison was designed to work very, very slow, in order to erase any suspicion.
I was a teenager during the show… Oberyns death literally gave me nightmares. Yeah it was gruesome, but that wasn’t why it haunted me. I had become so enveloped in his character and his motives. How he delivered his lines and the morals of his character. His willingness to stand up to the “Golden Lion” made his death for me so absolutely heart crushing. I’d have the same nightmare of his head being crushed, followed by the screams of his woman and then me waking up. Truly a great and relatable character. I felt like I’d lost a friend. I literally mourned him, I was that hurt hurt over his death.
this was a lil scaring, mostly because of what it represents to me- confidence leading to complete despair. the true extent to what failure or even misfortune could mean when simply pursuing your own goals and beyond that, what people can do to you outside of your control. the horror of it actually shook me a bit.
How does Oberyn hating the Lannisters paint him more like a villain? By that time, we already hate most of the Lannisters and seeing Oberyn, a new character, willingly and openly stand up to them wins us over. So him being a good guy isn't really a twist.
It's not that we think he's a villain necessarily, just that we suspect his agenda to be the same as most of the characters in King's landing, a player in the Game of Thrones. His agenda at first seems rather vulture like, to come and twist things up because there's clearly a power struggle in Westeros. In some respects, he is a player of the game, but the twist is that he is not after power, he's after vengeance. That's what makes him more sincere and likeable as a character amongst the backstabbers and schemers in King's Landing. He never lies or schemes and is open about his nature, and you sense he is hiding something, but he's actually not. Bare in mind we see Varys and Shae testify against Tyrion before that, all of Tyrion's allies turn against him, and in comes Oberyn with a goal other than self preservation or power, and that's the twist.
It was really cool having a character show up so far into the show, that seemed so morally good. Most of the characters in the show were enemies to our main protagonist, so it was nice having this force of nature enter out of nowhere and attempt to fight against the lannisters.
@@a-c6586 because he was consumed by revenge. He was ruthless, using poison to slowly kill his enemies. And he enjoyed watching it. He was also very narcissistic. It's kinda weird looking back, like where is Oberyn's small magical sidekick that forces Oberyn to become an unlikely father figure along the way? Is it Tyrion? Tyrion doesn't use the Force or have fungus-killing blood though lol
They did him very well from the book. In the book he is mostly a man of legend. Many of the KL high borns have only heard of him and his deeds and adventures. That he is a warrior to fear and admire, that he is willful and courageous but also very proud and dangerous. I like that the show gave him a lot of minutes to expand on him. The only thing I would have done in the show (and it’s not even necessary) is just talk more about his legend, his sellsword days, his daughters, his duels and his knowledge of poison but even without that, he was brilliantly adapted.
Hell, the whole rivalry with House Tyrell. The fact that he jousted vs Willas Tyrell (Pace’s oldest son, brother of Loras & Margaery) and he beat him and crippled him in the joust BUT became good friends afterwards and they wrote each other very frequently

Oberyn Martell was one of my favourite characters from the show. When I started reading the books, he became even more so. One of the most interesting things for me was reading the books and discovering the true purpose of Oberyn's visit to Kings Landing. Yes, he wanted revenge for his sister (he says that repeatedly), but he also seemed to be trying to provoke the Lannisters into harming him(?)so that it could give Dorne justification for starting a war with them. He perhaps was even trying to sow division between them by supporting Tyrion and being his champion (at the time probably thinking that he was going to win the fight), knowing that that would provoke Tywin and Cersei as he already knew that they didn't like Tyrion very much. If Oberyn had won the fight, he might've succeeded in that goal. He was definitely in Kings Landing for some specific purpose like that, otherwise why would his brother, Doran, send him of all people on his behalf? Doran knew Oberyn's temperament and knew what he was doing when he sent him there. Doran is the grass that hides the viper (Oberyn) before he strikes. The fact that Tywin was shitting himself before he died was probably because of Oberyn, and the mere subtlty of that kind of conspiracy tells me that Doran was involved as well. I don't know. This comment was supposed to be about how much I miss that character, but now here we are, discussing conspiracies. I miss all of those characters actually, and that world. George needs to finish those books and give us the ending that we all deserve dammit!
Pedro basically came into a show with a full spectrum of well-established characters played by outstanding actors... then proceeded to knock it out of the park. It's a pretty mean feat to join the cast of one of the most popular shows of all time, at it's height no less, and still manage to stand out and have such a massive impact on the show.
I also wanted to say that i love how he is described as a legendary fighter through some of his scenes,it adds a lot of charisma to his character even before his fight
I still think the conversation Oberyn and Tyrion had in the cell was one of the best scenes in the show, its my personal favorite. Tyrion is one of my favorite characters and it felt good to see a character empathize with him along with Oberyn having his own motive to get involved in the situation.
Season 4 was the peak of television and book adaptations, not just GoT. The writing paired with Pedro's talent and charm sealed the deal. Oberyn remains one of my favorite characters.
I sobbed, SOBBED, when he agreed to be Tyrion's champion. I liked him and found him a compelling character before but that moment sealed my forever love of that character (and Pedro's performance). The one GOT character death I still haven't gotten over.
Jacked Dorne up, completely. Then had the nerve to chose a bastard to take over as liege lord? Yeah, I know they don't disdain bastards in Dorne, but to have one take over a leige lord?? From 100s of years of successful Martell rule?? Ridiculous! Not to mention they left out Arriana, Dorran's eldest child and heir to the Dorne crown.
Oberyn has always been in my top 3 favourite GoT characters. Like you say, from the moment he appears, and for the entire season, he's just 10/10. I could be wrong but I think I recall Pedro Pascal saying his first scene that he filmed was the monologue!
Thank you a lot for your work on this character, please i beg you keep making Game of Thrones videos. They're always really interesting and funny, i really like your ways of reflexion and i think people on UA-cam needs this kind of content !
I'll never permanently leave Game of Thrones. Especially since HBO is going to try and adapt everything George has written relating to ASOIAF. So there will always be more content to make videos on in the future. But for these in between years since they take a long time to make seasons, I may focus more on other shows/movies.

Fabulous, I've felt this way since first watching him. Was struck by this amazing character portrayal. Great job in putting it into words so eloquently. Go Pedro!
Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer...unless you're Oberyn, his overconfidence got him done and dead quick af. For a character that only appeared for a single season, he's absolutely phenomenal, a wonderful study from a writing perspective on how to introduce and progress a character and making it awesome even with limited screen-time. GOT has a lot of limited-time characters that still manage to steal the spotlight whenever they appear - Olenna being one of them, for example.
I think you did a wonderful job on this video. Don't worry about feeling like you were just rambling on. It was very well executed. I was genuinely surprised to see Oberyn's face when I went to my UA-cam homepage, but I am very glad you made this video. Keep them coming Supercuts. PS I am not tired of GOT videos. I remember the day I watched that episode, after THAT scene I just sat there for 10 minutes and then met with a friend in a middle of the night just to sit there in silence and share that feeling lol Oberyn was one of my favorite characters and I’m so happy for Pedro Pascal now ❤ I remember having a screensaver of someone’s art of Oberyn and his paramour (I forgot her name) kissing with dead Mountain in the background 😍
The characters who were only around for one season were easily the strongest: Oberyn, Ned, Bobby B, Drogo. Oberyn was actually a breath of fresh air for many reasons, but especially because we hadn't had a similar character since Ned, Bobby B, and Drogo all died in season 1. Honestly, once Oberyn died in season 4, other single-season characters never held a candle to these four.
Oberyn is my favourite character ever period. Not just from GOT but all time. It felt weird to me for a long time because he didn't have as much screentime as other amazing characters, but there just never has been a character i've been more obsessed with. The acting, the writing, the story... Its all fantastic
Great video! I love Oberyn, he's one of my favourite characters from the show. I think he's a really good example of positive masculinity actually, demonstrating you can still be very manly while also being sensual, passionate and compassionate.
I didn't even realize that Season 4 happened before Narcos, I couldn't believe it at first. Don't get me wrong, I like Narcos and Pedro Pascal in it, but Oberyn feels like such a perfect and complete performance, I'm astonished it's his first major role.
Your videos keep me engaged with GoT especially since you call out good chars and scenes and the bad ones too. As long as you have ideas, keep at it my man
Great video! Oberyn was my 2nd favorite character after Dany. You really did a great job of showcasing what made him such a great character in such a short time.
FWIW, I still love seeing new takes and new info about GoT. The show ended... badly... and I know the way the ending was handled caused it to drop off the radar for a lot of people, but I still rewatch often and I love the world they created.
12:13 the point you made about actor's lack of charisma in the character he portrays is 1000% how I felt about Daario Naharis. Ed Skrein (the original Daario from season 2) completely dominated his role, while I felt very meh about Michiel Huisman (the replacement from season 3 onwards) portrayal.
His monologue with Tyrion, one of the best of the series. Id say Tywins opening scene with Jaime, and some of The "Hounds" scenes are some of the best.
Thank you for still making videos with such quality about ASOIAF, you made me friend again with the show EDIT: Please do not stop making GoT videos there are so great and I think we are a lot to still appreciate them, you give this universe what it deserves
Totally agree. He is my all time favorite character on the show. The fight with the mountain is legendary and still shocking no matter how many times I watch it.
Your GoT videos are my absolute favourites and 9 times out of 10 you're articulating what I've been thinking, which is super cathartic to listen to as a GoT nerd. I personally would be disappointed if you stopped making these videos to focus on other topics. I get so excited when I see a new GoT video. When I saw this one I almost choked on my pie.
13:50 my favorite is when Cersei tells Oberyn that it's a shame Doran didn't show up for the wedding. Oberyn says nothing, just gives a sneer, a smirk, and a shrug. wow.
so I just finished affc and I can’t believe how absolutely AMAZING Oberyn is. The show paints him as a likable menace, where the books make him feel like a character that should 100% be a villain. Which he is, he’s just a big villain towards the Lannisters instead of the p.o.v. character in king’s landing, Tyrion. It’s beautiful how George made an extremely grey character by pinning a villainous character vs a villainous group. Love my man and Pedro really made that role 10/10
I loved this guy so much, and was cheering for him the most I have in that excellent series, and his death was by far the saddest (although Robb’s was heart wrenching.
I'd rather watch a historical documentary than game of thrones but I'm here to see how Pedro Pascal performed. A truly intriguing character. Such an incredibly wide range given the character motivations.
I remember reading the trial by combat and being utterly shocked, but watching it was such an experience, because even though i knew, it still was so well built and executed that it still shocked me. Same with the Red Wedding. When Game of Thrones was good, it was amazing.
The books hint at Oberyn not just technically killing the Mountain, but also poisoning Tywin with Widow's Blood, which shuts down bladder and bowel functions. The poison is specifically introduced during Tyrion's trial, Oberyn is a master of poisons, Tywin dies on the toilet and his corpse seeps out a horrible stench in the sept. So if Tyrion hadn't stepped in to kill his father, he would have died in agony days later. Oberyn was boss even after he died.
I was an Ice and Fire reader so when Oberyn was introduced on the show he didn’t look how I pictured him in my head. But that feeling ended pretty quickly. Pedro Pascal owned the character. He was the quintessential “renaissance man.” The guy men want to be like and women want to be with.
Based character, based actor, based video. Teaching people to see the good in Game of Thrones despite it's last two seasons is a very noble and heroic thing to do. To the pure, all things are pure; to the base, all things are base. Cheers!
His death was heart breaking. Dorne as I understood it is analogous to Al-Andalus IRL. His mannerisms, bad boy vibe, disobedience and esthetics are all reminiscent of Alfa energy in Morrorco and Southern Spain, and Portugal to a lesser extent. I found myself rooting for him but the moment he walked into that arena I knew it was gonna be the end.
Oberyn's death is very shocking, but Bronn interestingly predicted it almost exactly. When Bronn was explaining to Tyrion why he did not want to fight the Mountain, he acknowledged that he, as a smaller nimbler man, could possibly "dance" around the Mountain, slowly wearing him down, and could win by doing so. This is of course how Oberyn defeated the mountain, literally "dancing" around him with acrobatics and quick maneuvering. However, Bronn stated that one minor slip-up would allow the immensely dangerous Mountain to kill him. Oberyn stepped in the wrong spot, and looked away at just the wrong moment; one minor slip-up.

Exactly.
@@jaybe9627 really that's the only one ? I think starting from season 5 there is a ton I don't like, but makes sense since they started deviating from the books like in the example you mention.
@@alexgarcia2k I mean it's not the only one but it was the first no turning back one I really remember, so it hit the hardest. By season 7 I was pretty much entirely checked out and only watching out of curiosity and because it was a series I watched along with friends. Season 4 was the last really good season imo.
Pascal made Oberyn seem so free and relaxed. Even has he was in the den of vipers that was King's Landing.
"I disagree. I've come to the perfect place. I want to bring those who have wronged me to justice, and all those who have wronged me are right here"
What a line. Chills
Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken. Pedro Pascal's Oberyn is the highlight of the show, big agree! Excellent analysis.
@@MrJordwalk GRRM's writing do be dripping in symbolism
Is he bisexual lol? I only read the books but that's the second time i missed a character's sexuality in ASOIAF if he is.
@@MrJordwalk huh? I have read the book but I didn't notice it, what gives you this idea that he was poisoned?
@@runek100
It's only hinted that Tywin may have been poisoned, because his corpse started smelling really, really bad only days after he died, too quickly for it to be natural rot and people often fainted from the unnatural smell when they came to pay their respects.
I literally mourned him, I was that hurt hurt over his death.
you so beautifully described how I felt, holly shit!!!! I was that hurt too!!
It was the red wedding all over again
this was a lil scaring, mostly because of what it represents to me- confidence leading to complete despair. the true extent to what failure or even misfortune could mean when simply pursuing your own goals and beyond that, what people can do to you outside of your control. the horror of it actually shook me a bit.
He is really my favorite character in all of Game of Thrones, you can’t forget him. He’s great.
How does Oberyn hating the Lannisters paint him more like a villain? By that time, we already hate most of the Lannisters and seeing Oberyn, a new character, willingly and openly stand up to them wins us over. So him being a good guy isn't really a twist.
He is definitely not a good guy tho
@@runek100 How so?
@@TakumProti There are theories he started the Brave Companions.
@@judeconnor-macintyre9874 Yeah, THEORIES.
It was really cool having a character show up so far into the show, that seemed so morally good. Most of the characters in the show were enemies to our main protagonist, so it was nice having this force of nature enter out of nowhere and attempt to fight against the lannisters.
I feel like there were plenty of allies but they all get their heads smushed in
I loved his character, but I don't think he was a good guy.
@@runek100why not?
@@a-c6586 because he was consumed by revenge. He was ruthless, using poison to slowly kill his enemies. And he enjoyed watching it. He was also very narcissistic. But he was definitely one of my most favorite characters.
He's definitely a phenomenal character
(Spoiler alert) because he's played by Pedro Pascal
It's kinda weird looking back, like where is Oberyn's small magical sidekick that forces Oberyn to become an unlikely father figure along the way? Is it Tyrion? Tyrion doesn't use the Force or have fungus-killing blood though lol

@@Eric_lansherr bro what are you saying😂😂 this isn’t a joke
Could've added that to the 'history and lore' extras!

4:00 Also the fact that he is being this sincere and empathetic towards a Lannister, it shows his great character and maturity/wisdom
That little "better roles" detail at 0:32 made laugh so much😂
I also wanted to say that i love how he is described as a legendary fighter through some of his scenes,it adds a lot of charisma to his character even before his fight
Oberyn remains one of my favorite characters.
we absolutely need more character analysis videos with hades music, it fits so perfectly
*I always forget how simply amazing/emotional that Oberyn & Tyrion scene was.🙏🏼😭*
I sobbed, SOBBED, when he agreed to be Tyrion's champion. I liked him and found him a compelling character before but that moment sealed my forever love of that character (and Pedro's performance). The one GOT character death I still haven't gotten over.
He was so excellent, it's a damn crying shame what they did to the rest of the Dornish characters once he was gone.
I literally cried when I first saw what they did to the Sand Snakes, such a waste 😢
What are you talking about?
They never made any more show beyond the books.
Ugh they butchered the Dorne storyline so badly. Season 5 was truly the beginning of the end.
My poor beloved Ellaria Sand, the only character who has a monologue about the benefits of mercy vs revenge was turned in a vengeful character!
You remember correctly. The first scene he shot was the one in the dungeon with Peter and he was so nervous because it was Peter Dinklage.
You're right this character and this performance doesn't get talked about enough. Even within the GOT Zeitgeist.
the scene with tyrion in the dungeon is among the best in the series
It’s crazy how massive an impact Oberyn had on fans despite only being in several episodes.

I didn't even realize that Season 4 happened before Narcos, I couldn't believe it at first. Don't get me wrong, I like Narcos and Pedro Pascal in it, but Oberyn feels like such a perfect and complete performance, I'm astonished it's his first major role.

Oberyn is probably my favorite TV series character of all time, and Pedro definitely nailed this role with such a short screen time.

Ed Skrein (the original Daario from season 2) completely dominated his role, while I felt very meh about Michiel Huisman (the replacement from season 3 onwards) portrayal.
also his little comment about "we don't hurt little girls in dorne" is a dig at Tywin to Cersei's face XD
His monologue with Tyrion, one of the best of the series. Id say Tywins opening scene with Jaime, and some of The "Hounds" scenes are some of the best.
Thank you for still making videos with such quality about ASOIAF, you made me friend again with the show

Just the video I was looking for. Oberyn and Pedro were perfect, as was your analysis.
13:50 my favorite is when Cersei tells Oberyn that it's a shame Doran didn't show up for the wedding. Oberyn says nothing, just gives a sneer, a smirk, and a shrug. wow.
When I reflect, I think he was my favourite character in the entire show.
It's been 10 years and I still mourn the death of Prince Oberyn RIP my sweet prince
so I just finished affc and I can’t believe how absolutely AMAZING Oberyn is.
Supercuts just made this video to confess his love for Pedro Pascal and i'm here for it.
Oberyn added the necessary spice to the season. What a well-crafted role!
I loved this guy so much, and was cheering for him the most I have in that excellent series, and his death was by far the saddest (although Robb’s was heart wrenching.
He’s literally one of maybe 3 legitimately good natured characters in the show.

I STILL hurt over Oberyn all these years later
Absolute perfection. My most favorite character in the entire series. *Chef's kiss*
Even in the books, Oberyn was a damn highlight, and I really thought he was supposed to last more than a single book.
Thank you Martin.
Totally in accordance with u, oberyn is a masterpiece of character in all senses. Love it 🥰🥰🥰
I honestly never get tired of Game Of Thrones videos.
Oberyn is definitely one of the reasons S4 is my fav season of GoT
He was one of the best written characters without a doubt.
Supercuts talking about Pedro Pascal like my mom talks about my high school achievements 😂
I was an Ice and Fire reader so when Oberyn was introduced on the show he didn’t look how I pictured him in my head. But that feeling ended pretty quickly. Pedro Pascal owned the character. He was the quintessential “renaissance man.” The guy men want to be like and women want to be with.
And who men want to be with and women want to be like, lmao. All his daughters want to be like him, but they fail.
I did not See the Video yet but your so right !
Tywin, terion, oberyn, varys, ned. All impressed me so much as characters
I think Oberyn might be the best written & acted 1 season performance/character ever!
