    Honestly the idea of the ending in itself is not a bad thing… it’s just that the story was CLEARLY never heading in that direction. This decision was obviously a last minute ending to a show that either ran out of budget or was on the verge of being axed. When observing the effects, visual quality, fights, world building, and multi-character perspectives from season 1 and 2, you can tell something clearly went wrong in season 3.

The theme of putting away childish things and becoming an adult is putting away the childish idea that violent conflict was the only possible path forward. Magne chose the adult path when the put his hammer down in the confrontation and both sides walked away.

    I've just finished watching the final episode and I have to say I am really saddened by it. Something about this show touched me from the very first episode of series one, so I'm sad that it ended in such an incoherent way and with a such wasted opportunity. Don't get me wrong I'd have loved a storyline that saw Magne suffer a psychotic break as a result of the trauma of moving back to Edda and the death of Isolde - withdrawing into a fantasy inspired by his childhood comics - and I would have been incredibly moved by the final ending reveal, but only if the entire show had been written in such a way than on rewatching with the hindsight of the ending, it would have been clear what the truth had been all along, which would make any rewatch very poignant and moving now really understanding what was going on and making sense of things. But that was absolutely not the case in the writing of this show and all I'm left with is confusion as to what bits were real and what bits were his delusions, and so it renders the entire programme empty.
    In addition as someone who has known two people whose lives have been devastated by schizophrenia the ending in which Magne seems to just choose to get better, symbolically shown by his throwing away the comics, leaves a very bad taste in the mouth. If only it were that easy!
    My disappointment and sadness aside, I'm grateful to this show for introducing me to a bunch of wonderful actors and the loveliness of the Norwegian language. I don't fault them at all and they did fantastically well in the final episodes with the scripts they were given. I hope to see them in lots more programmes in the future and will not hesitate to watch anything they are in.

    • @Emidoki
      @Emidoki Рік тому +8

      This is exactly how I feel too. I can only alleviate the emptiness by believing he actually made up that it was all in his head so that he could move on in the human world. Would be an interesting story to come back to if this were the case; would be fun to see his friends trying to convince him that it was all real after all. I would have loved the ending had they had clues hidden from the start but that's not what happened. What happened with all the murders and deaths? Not even an explanation, and to attribute that purely to imagination is simply not enough. How would that be possible when so much happened when Magne wasn't even around? Had it been intended from the start; I think it would have been great. If they later come out and say it was planned all along, it's either a lie or they didn't understand how to make this work. I've seen it pulled off before in other tv shows and movies where it was executed in a way that made sense, this does not.
      Perhaps they had 3 seasons in mind, just not the ending until it was too late. One of the actors even mentions it gives you a different way to watch, but it doesn't, the events depicted and set up don't match. There are no signs throughout the series on what's real and what's not so what's the point? The therapy sessions with the Psychologist that didn't include Magne were all in his mind then, why? That means we can't trust anything from beginning to end, the entire show is an instant plot hole with this ending. There was nothing that promoted mental health awareness either, if anything, it makes a joke out of it.

      This is so well said. There are films that can make this sort of situation work brilliantly.
      🚨SPOILER ALERT: the film “The Others” is a great example. 🚨
      This series doesn’t pull off this ending well at all. Yet we just have to accept it, be left with confusion and try to draw our own conclusions. Seeing the Jutulheim house change structure after Magne threw away the comics is just …
      I actually rewatched season 1 & 2 before watching season 3. After finishing the finale I was disappointed. I even went back to the very first episode to quickly see a timeline of things that happened with/to Magne before Isolde’s death.

      Replace the word "magic" with "peace" - this is Magne's struggle in the end and he finally believes in the peace he's been fighting for. As it was, the magic wasn't magical at all - it was used as simply as any gun or sword, ultimately. A true era of peace, just like magic, evokes feelings of disbelief because we never see it. Just like Magne, most viewers wanted a fight because they thought it would give them closure to this story, but brokering peace with his destined villain is as magical as it gets - they did not take the magic away, they're finally giving it to us in the end. (And let's not forget the heavy environmental themes this whole show started with, what Isolde died for - in this time we live in, *more* destruction is *not* the answer, the show is telling us to hit the brakes *now* or we'll be fighting over the ashes.)

None of it was a fiction except for the alternate side story in Season 6, which was a sort of purgatory they created together AFTER all of the events of the story. The interpretation isn't necessarily that none of what went on was real, remember, several scenes depicting the supernatural behavior of the gods and giants took place in Magne's absence, but once Magne opted for a peaceful resolution to the age old conflict, perhaps the spirits of the ancient gods and giants left their mortal hosts, after all, the characters of those myths are only as powerful as our imagination allows, and although history often repeats itself, it doesn't have to. Scripts don't have to be followed, and people can change.

    • @jtatsiue

      @@blakebarnes2304 What a bummer. Most directors don't reveal their intent because it spoils it for the audience if the director gives the official interpretation. Now, no other take is valid, but that's fundamentally not how art works, once a work of art is shared it doesn't belong strictly to the creator. I think both a literal and a metaphorical take on the show hold water. What's interesting is that if it's all in Magne's head, then basically the message of the show is that things on earth are so bad that it's "as if" the world is ruled by an ancient race of megalomaniacal giants who are hellbent on destroying the environment and wiping out the entire human race.

    Volva's death and the corpse disappearing , Magne's mother was show asking about her at the shop and people say ahe just vanished.
    There are so much that can't be explained with that ending that it made me slightly upset.

    • @Mahtijanis
      @Mahtijanis Рік тому +4

      Absolutely agree.
      And the list goes on:
      Are we really to believe that Magne had spent all his youth devouring comic books in a foreign language (the comics were in English) despite the show telling us multiple times he's essentially unable to read at all?
      What about his eye glasses, in the end we see him without them even though he let go of his fantasies?
      What about him showing powers before the death of Isolde?
      If the whole story was just Magne making things up and escaping into a fantasy world where he's special and can protect his loved ones why would he portray himself as such as an arrogant b*stard?
      And why oh why would a show that otherwise tried to portray Norse mythology in its original context choose to base Magne's visions and fantasies on American superhero comics (not nearly as popular in Europe as in the US) instead of, for example, Peter Madsen's Valhalla series (Danish comics) which at least is much closer to the actual mythology?
      It's beyond obvious that this wasn't the original roadmap for how the series would progress, or if it was the writers did an awful job at it.
      And to make it worse, with the "all in his head" interpretation there's not a single scene in the series that I can be sure actually happened, which in turn renders the whole thing meaningless.
      In the last scene we see the kids along with Wotan and others share a table, but if we're robbed of the story we were shown we're left with absolutely no explanation as to why they're all there together. We no longer know any of the characters at all.
      And that makes me very, very disappointed with an otherwise interesting show.

  • @rkv195
    @rkv195 Рік тому +4

    Maybe it’s not just in Magne’s head. He was imagining how the future would have been if he wouldn’t have stopped the war between Gods and Giants. He has altered the future and all have become friends and are co-exisiting. I chose to interpret it this way.

    The ending honestly disappointed us. We (my boyfriend and I) have Norwegian origin so norse mythology is a big part of what we connect over. We loved seeing norse mythology brought to life in present day. To find out it was all in his head, based off comics, was a major let down. We were hoping for the true mythology ending. I wish the ending could be re-done. The actors were amazing and I want to thank them for giving us three amazing seasons. But the writers are the ones that left us with the heartache.

    I quite liked the ending. I went through the same shock as most loyal viewers but I just sat back and let it settle in, thought about the whole series in retrospect and realized that it was quite powerful. Suddenly everything became symbolic and I saw how a teen could weave in real life people into their imagination to deal with trauma. It also made sense why the mother was always excluded from his "secret" life. For instance no matter how grave the matter was in his imagination whenever the mom would walk in the "world" would come to a halt and everything become about her and the moment she was gone, the war among the giants and gods was back on. I believe that was intentional as the mom was a doze of unavoidable reality which made his wild imagination take a break because he would feel safe around her with no need to escape into the comfort of his imagination. Just like a child would.
    A very unexpected and mature ending in my opinion.

      Yeah they clearly never planned this. If they did the shows perspetive should have been always from Magne. That way it would be very believeble that it was all in his head.
      But we had entire character developments withough Magne even being there and a lot of scenes that Magne doesnt even come to know... so exactly what happened? Was it all him imagining? If so nothing really happened. The things that made us like the characters were all a lie. You cant even understand how the characters reached where they are in that last lunch scene, since if all that magic thing and battles were fake, then the storie didnt even move as we saw it.
      Indeed I agree it has a strong message, but it was not planned until last minute for sure. The budget maybe ended or something and I can say their choice was knda good ideia, but not flawless and came at the cost of destroying the whole foundation of the series 😅

    The ending to me was the equivalent of getting through the entire Harry Potter storyline, all the way to when he defeats Voldemort, and then having Harry Potter wake up still living under the stairs with his aunt and uncle, and everything turning out to be in his head as a way of dealing with his life. So in other words. F-ck the Ragnarök Season 3 writers and director. Absolute trash way to end it. Had they choses to make his call for peace the last episode, a instead had him see visions of Ragnarök beforehand and how everyone would die as is the cycle (so everyone got to see that final battle without it actually having to happen), then showed the graduation and him letting go of the past. THAT would have been a great ending. But making it all in his head? Seriously!!!! That was not the style of this show for 2 seasons, and that is not they kind of show fans were watching for. It was a slap in the face to every fan, especially after all the delays with each season. It's like the writers couldn't think of a way to end it, so they went with the cheapest cop out they could find. Straight B/S.

    If they wanted to end it with them coming into themselves as people, they should have just made it so that the "spirits/essence" of the gods that inhabited them were the ones actually bound by fate. but since the characters chose against it, there was a schism. Have Magne see the "Ragnarok" that MUST take place, only its in the spirit realm, just as he does in the show. but as the gods/giants die, have the "person" no longer bound to the spirit/giant genealogy, so that they become fully human. When we see thor die, we see magne rise. showing that hes grown beyond Thor, coming into the man he wants to be. That way, none of it is delusion. It happened. They were "gods". Its just that the human characters have all moved on, by transcending the mythos. The cycle will continue again through others, and Ragnarok will be an event that has happened, and hasnt happened, like it always is. The gods/giants forever bound to repeat Ragnarok over and over.

    Now ill say this as a viewer thats been with you guys and gals since season 1 ep 1 release on Netflix I waited years for multiple seasons to release and it was a roller coaster of emotions while waiting for the new seasons I remember rewatching season 1 like 20 times while waiting for season 2 release and I feel like I learned something new each rewatch of season 1 when season 2 finally released I was very happy and stayed up all night to watch it, even though it was a Saturday when it released like season 3, I loved watching it all and seeing how the characters grew and how Magne got his hammer and met new gods to help him in the upcoming Ragnarök it was really sad though for me when it ended season 2 and I had to wait another year to see season 3 and honestly it wasnt the worst thing in the world to wait but when it finally came out in August I obviously stayed up that night to watch it all and im sad to say I dont remember a-lot from that season it was just coasting along and you could feel the ending was rushed I was very let down at the fact that it was all in Magne's head because it made me feel as I couldnt believe what was really happening or I couldnt tell the difference for what was real and what wasnt like is that really how Isolde died or was she set off in her sleep and that was in Magne's head or was Laurits really Vidars son or was that in Magne's head to, it made me question a lot of things now I understand the casts opinion on being able to rewatch this in a different light but I dont think I could ever rewatch this again as of knowing this itd lose all its worth or its meaning of keeping me there as in season 1 I was like oh Norse mythology and reborn as Magne but that was all fake and the real parts where Magne at school or Isoldes death or even that scene where Magne throws things at fences. But all in all I was really sad with that ending I couldnt tell what really happened or what really went down how he made friends like how he met them or even how Magne was able to talk with them in the first place like what really happened with Gry cause I though she moved from Odda because the giants and the drama with Fjor but now I dont know I just feel as it would be really disrespectful to the past me and to the cast of the show to rewatch Ragnarök as it wouldnt have the same feeling or the same meaning it did on my first or second or third watch just season 3 to me ended the rewatch-ability and the meaning to the show. Thats just my heart felt opinion as a viewer over the years, really let down with this last season.

    I loved the actors and I realize they are doing a job. You can't tell me however this was all planned. At no point during the show before the final episode was his sanity with other characters called into question. Also take the whole premise away there is no reason for Magne to interact with the Jotul's whatsoever. You're going to tell me that a delusional kid is going to threaten and make people step down from jobs etc. and think it would be believable? Now they'd be like who is this kid making demands out of nowhere? He needs to be a mental health intuition. Even if you just say it was all in his head everything. Nothing even makes sense what he just imagined people dyeing and his graduation is all in his head? So, what is real from the first episode to the very end? I also don't think I am alone in wondering this. Also, you just took fans that say this as the modern-day war between Giants and Gods. Then you go just kidding it was all smoke and mirrors the whole time. Like you see the problem, don't you? You have these snippets of the mythology and now you're telling us it didn't matter the whole time? Like what the hell did we just watch? So, we only need episode one of the shows. Then fast forward to him throwing out his comics. Which pretty sure we haven't seen them till now. There is just so many holes and things to go over wrong about this. Like them sitting at the table all of them just makes no sense. If it's all in his head and he didn't have much interaction with the people, there then how can they be sitting like they are friends? I just don't get how you got to where you got. It's like you just gave up towards the end of the story. Like you forgot how nuances work.

But when you give someone such important and valuable characters who inspire so many people it’s so important that you don’t deviate to fulfill your creation. You need to deliver on what you promise and with such important characters you have a duty to bring it home correctly. The Ragnarok writers and directors failed to do this. Then his hallucinations is what would’ve happen if he didn’t choose peace between the giants and gods, so therefore, he lead everyone to put their weapons down to stop “Ragnarok” from repeating itself! It’s confusing but the ending where his mom said you’ll have to take steps and whatever so don’t be scare of fear, I think that’s what made him chose that path as he’s imagining what would really happened but he changed everything! So we will do this very simple battle posturing scene in the warehouse and then a couple of glimpses of what a cool battle would actually look like. But since we can’t afford to actually film that we will just pretend it happened in the main character’s head.

    I loved the show, but hated the ending. Too many plot holes & lazy writing. The actors did a fantastic job with what they were given. I feel like the writers of this show met with the writers of Game of Thrones, then said, "Hold my beer!" Ugh, so disappointed.

    This interview honestly seems like the actors were forced into saying those things. I get it that it has in his root a good message, but you can't just look at all the building that was done and think "yeah this all goes in the garbage, but at least it has a good message, totally worth it".
    It doesnt even make many sense since there is a lot of buiding outside of Magni. If it was only in his perspetive I could see it being pulled of as only his imagination. But how about the World Serpent? And all that Loki, Saxa and Bjorn story line? Was that all fake? If so we basically dont know any character...
    It raises too many questions.
    Im sorry but can't fadom the actors reaching the last episode and being satisfied

    I am going to go against the grain here, but I liked how it ended. I cried when Magne overcame his internal battle. I felt it gave the entire series a deeper meaning.

    I absolutely LOVED this show, I rewatched S1 + S2 like 3-4 times and I was EAGER for S3…. I have mixed feelings. Yes I loved S3 because it shows how Magna truly became more of what Thor would ever acted and seen the world as. Also the fact that it was all in his head both sad and just amazing. Like its crazy how he was able to interpret his everyday life in the path of Thor. On the other hand though, from the first 2 seasons, it really sucked how they wrote the ended. Like for one, it made me feel like there would be 4-5 seasons out at least and that the writers could’ve made this show into a long one with different outcomes. Also the fact that they ended it in like that, kinda cutting off the characters in his head unexpectedly in the eyes of the viewer. But over all, I feel like they couldve made the season last if they changed the line in S3 to a open ending, for more seasons, and that the actual ending made me disappointed that everything rhat happened was a imaginary life of a mentally ill student. LOVED the Actors though!

    I just finished this show. I can easily say I think season 1 was peak. The characters were all likable in their own way and the story was very coherent. I think when Fjor went pure evil in season 2, after “trying to be better” in season 1, it started going downhill because it truly didn’t make sense. He wasn’t THAT cold in the first season and I don’t understand how someone could loose all empathy for others the way he did. Still, I was enjoying the show. The ending though, had me very confused. It felt like they were trying to gaslight me into thinking it was all in Magne’s head, which obviously it wasn’t because there were too many moving parts. Too many scenes that didn’t involve him where supernatural things were happening. I absolutely LOVED the actors in this show. Magne and Fjor in particular, really shined in their range of acting. I didn’t even recognize Magne when he stepped into his Thor character. The way he carried himself (beard and hair aside) was truly unrecognizable to who he was before. I’m glad I watched this series, though I wasn’t crazy about the ending. I want to watch these actors in more shows!

    I like how they said there would be spoilers, then there were only the vaguest possible spoilers I would guess because when they were describing what happened it sounded awful so they just cut them from the video.

    Still one my most fav Netflix series. But the ending could had been better. Because the way the story has been taken forward since the first season, it really doesn’t make sense to end it this way and that too in the very end just revealing his comic books and it’s just a safe way I feel. Cuz the other scenes in the series won’t make Sense. And will leave a loop Hole. The ending would’ve suited more for a movie than a 3 seasoned episodic. After all it’s just my general opinion. Films are subjective

    I have mixed opinions about the ending. from a literary and academic standpoint it’s so amazing and we’ll written and directed but as a viewer? that’s not what a lot of people wanna see especially with the build up and tension established.

    Magne didn't need glasses anymore even in the finale. He was reading that Thor comic without his glasses.
    I didn't take the ending of season three to mean it was all in Magne's head at all. I don't think that's what the creators intended. THat would be stupid. But the pull of fate was still there to be dealt with. They should have just shown all the gods and such dealing with it, instead of just Magne, Obviously everything was real. Need a Laurits spin off. If anything it was Magne handling everything by deciding the needs of the gods, of the myths, to be lived out, didn't have to control his life anymore, and his tendency to get lost in fantasy was making it harder for him than for the others. But he wouldn't even have met most of those people if not for magic and such. SO obviously it was all real.
