    Update: my gaming content will be on my 2nd channel: ua-cam.com/users/TPhGames
    (at least some LotR related gaming videos will still be posted here on the main channel though)
    If you have any questions regarding Darkeater Midir, feel free to ask =) Also the video is 13:37 minutes long, that must be a sign for a good guide, right? ;D Same with the typo (Dark Soils) in the title ....

      I really hope my plus ten lightning infused Lothric greatsword will do enough damage to him... I have to admit I'm really dreading this boss fight lol and that says alot considering the fact that I'll still have Gael and the Lord of cinder to contend with after defeating him.

      To be fair, fextralife isnt claiming there is nothing more to know about bosses than their guides. But they give nice intros to what to expect. After i wiped on midir a bunch of times on my own, trying my own way with the basics from fextra, i ended up here for a better guide cause basically, i gave up trial and error on my own. Different levels of various guides are fine.

      @@DM-rb2qt maybe I was originally a little too harsh on Fextra. It's just that their guide seems like they beat the boss once, never co op'd it and made a guide with their misguided tactics and passed it off as helpful when frustrated player are going to find it and just die more because of it. 3 years ago that really irked me.

      For me, it's not as bad as Friede. Against her I get so angry and frustrated. But when I die to Midir I don't. Why? Friede is extremely unpredictable (unless you fought her a million times, of course, but I'm talking as a casual player here). Midir telegraphs his movements extremely well and it feels like, if I get hit, it's because of me and not because of a randem quick attack.

    Good guide. My issue with Midir and why I don't think he's a good boss is for 2 reasons. The fact he doesn't really have any weaknesses outside of taking a little more damage when you hit his head and having a fairly large hitbox, mixed with his massive health pool.
    The health pool would normally be fine, I dealt with it no problem in Bloodborne and it can work well in dark souls 3 as well, for example Gael has a high health pool but he gives you breathing room and can even be staggered after several hits. Meanwhile Midir takes and insane amount of hits and can kill you in literally 2 or 3 hits and even 1 shot you. The boss isn't technically that hard but there's stuff that causes the fight to go on and on and eventually you're going to make a mistake.

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  6 років тому +13

      Yes I agree. Midir is a very binary boss. Don't get hit and hit his head once after dodging until he is dead. There is not much else you can do (at least melee). All you do, is just waiting for his attacks. And in Souls and esp. DaS3 there are many bosses like that, but they are usually not as punishing as Midir + only be able to effectively hit his head, limits your options tremendously. If you don't hit his head, you drag the fight on forever and create more opportunities for you making mistakes. I really dislike the one body part weakness design in this case. I think that is this boss designs biggest problem (ofc changing this would need a more complex move set for Midir).

    • @roryos
      @roryos 6 років тому +8

      It's also annoyingly one of the boss fights in the game that's actually harder when you summon a phantom since you can only get the occasional hit in on him with an even bigger health pool, and also the fact that he's changing targets which can really mess you up and you're more likely to get hit by his devastating attacks.

      He is a giant dragon what did you expect?
      Not to mention he is the last Dragon Boss of the Souls Series, best make him difficult otherwise it would be too disappointing.
      He also gives you tons of breathing room for healing, since all of his combos have 2-3 second delays in between.
      I agree though that the head weakspot is ridiculous, but then again he does bring his head down low for you to hit, and it is common knowledge the head is a good weakspot.
      And how would you stagger a dragon? He was the literal descendant of the archdragons, he wont be so easily staggered as Gael. And he can be staggered, if you put pressure on his head long enough.

      I disagree. Me and my cousin have been getting stomped by Midr on our new game + run, and our closest efforts so far have been where I - a strength build - bait his head and get the big hits in, while my cousin runs under and dexes his tail continuously. I agree though, the only downside is the damn tail swipe catching me as he spins around to go after my cousin. We had him down to less than a quarter HP last night and that's exactly how I died.

    • @LOTRTROTK
      @LOTRTROTK 3 роки тому +1

      @@pinealdreams1064 I fight him alone though and if titles were a thing in DS3 I'd be a dragon slayer since I help hosts fight Midir, Oceiros and Nameless King. The only reason I stopped is because I kept getting summoned as that damned half light sissy. I wish there was an option to just redo a boss fight in the bonfire or something.
      Here's a funny story and maybe the host who summoned me might recognize this. I had one instance where a host just sat on the farthest corner of the cave, which I prefer to be honest, and let me destroy Midir taking probably a couple of hits. Then when he was about to die, at the corner of my screen I saw the host racing me for the last hit and he got comboed to death. Then he summoned me again and performed the gesture where he falls to the ground to tell me that he fucked up and I gave him the clap gesture. After that we went down again this time he just watched as a did the same thing.
      That said, I fought Midir probably 50 times before his patterns have been ingrained in me that now he feels slow but always fun. Head is the best way and I've probably killed him a few hundred times by myself.

      No problem, hapyp you found it useful
      Yes I thought this would be the most useful approach. The problem might be that it takes too much time making guides like these this way. You have to record all the attacks (some are very rare), you have to develop a strategy for dodging them, etc. Makes a guide like this time consuming to produce (which might be why I only made few of them for my channel). Esp. the boss that usually might make a guide interesting for people, are also the most complex bosses with tons of moves as well.

    This is my favorite fight, similar to the dragon DLC fight in DS1, and the dragon DLC fight in DS2. I guess I like them the most because it's less about perfectly timing a nonsensical invincible roll in response to an enemy telegraphing a swing, but holding it way too long, and which will do a full 360 locked onto you in the air. These fights remind me of some good fights in DeS, more about learning the quirks and spacing and positioning.

    For f***ing sake, after a few tries I can kick the ass of any boss in "Soulsborne", but Midir wipes the floor with me every time I dare to face him and he makes me feel like a f***ing noob. I could try to blame the crappy camera, but this is an issue in many bossfights in DS (plus Bloodborne) and I still managed to defeat them. Maybe I should simply accept that I found my master boss instead of dying over and over an OVER again. On the other side every playthrough of DS3 feels so incomplete with one victory missing. One thing to add if you don't move at the start none of his initial attacks will hit you

  • @Ramon-gg3bd
    @Ramon-gg3bd 3 місяці тому +1

    Here is my strategy:
    Strength/faith build, dragonslayer greataxe +5.
    Survive the first phase by staying in front of his head like you said, try to bait his claw/bite attacks or run away if he is spitting fire.
    Second phase try to get his laser attack, avoid it by sprinting left of the initial laser and then sprint to the right of his head after to avoid explosion damage
    During the cooldown, smack him twice with the special attack. This will stagger him. Do a critical attack (hornet ring!). Likely his health pool melted away by then, requiring only a couple of hits at most to burn his remaining health.

    I watched this guide 2 times , I use dragonslayer greataxe+5 , which deals pretty good damage to both physical and lightning , but it seems that i am more good by hitting his feet , when I hit his head , he does the dash attack , which you said was dangerous and its really common when I fight him.

    This could have been one of the most epic boss battles in gaming history if it weren't for some of his bullsh*t moves. Especially the dark laser combo in the second phase. Yes, I am frustrated, so maybe I am exaggerating, but this boss is just peak fromsoftware bad in some places. I don't care about "git gud", seriously, FS is not perfect, as is no developer. Even the way to the boss area is just....urgh...

    The best weapon to use against Midir is Artorias' greatsword, transposed with the Abyss Watchers' soul, a heavy weapon that deals a lot of damage per hit, plus has bonus damage against abyssal creatures.

    Always aim for the head. Run to the side if he's gonna breathe fire and attack. Do not use UGS or spears. Always go for fast straight swords or katanas, mix with pontiff's right eye and carthus milk ring and you're good to go

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  6 років тому

      Why the Carthus Milkring? For the Dex? The invisibility does not work against AI enemies. I would also say UGS work quite well too.

    • @greendayrocksmuch
      @greendayrocksmuch 6 років тому

      it works well when he do fire breath attacks. I try to fight him with a lightning Zwei and it was very slow and couldn't connect combos so the pontiff's right eye doesn't work. I did beat him with a washing pole +10, fast attacks and pontiff's ring do like 1k damage

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  6 років тому

      Ofc if you want to use Pontiff's Right Eye, UGS won't work. UGS are probably slower, but they work too, if you are patient. I think I beat him with an Uchi first time, but I also beat him with the Zweihänder.

    You can totally fight this boss with lock-on. It's not too dizzying like people make it out to be if you watch you're position, and it makes you feel like a badass, going toe-to-toe face-to-face with a dragon rather than scampering around his feet like a rat.

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  7 років тому +5

      Yes, it's totally possible with camera lock, but I think it's still easier without. The approach of this guide is to stay in front of his head almost all the time, so it would work with log on, but I like the overview and option to move the camera freely.

    • @michaelhenry3234
      @michaelhenry3234 6 років тому

      +PaszerDye Yes! I fought him like this and it was so intense and exciting! It felt so incredibly badass dodging while the camera swings about. I always fight bosses with lockdown, even if it makes it harder. The reason? It makes the fights so much more intense. Every single fight gets you on the edge of cardiac arrest. It's a feeling I like to call the "dark souls high".

      What I've been doing, and Ive only made it to phase 2 twice so I'm still learning his attack variations and I'm not an expert, I've been locking onto his head staying far enough away to recognize his attacks, trying to bait his downward fire/laser attack NOT standing directly in front of him, as soon as he lifts his head the fire aoe is gone sprint forward to where his head is in time to charge a heavy attack, that's the only one I punish because I know I won't miss him, only time I break lock on is during his tantrum and flying and spitting fire, using a heavy lothric knight greatsword +10 with 43 strength a charged heavy to his head is doing 1045 dmg.

    • @michaelhenry3234
      @michaelhenry3234 6 років тому

      Taylor Kennedy Try practicing punishing his other attacks. Baiting a single attack will take literally forever. Once you get a feel for his attack patterns, you should have no problem punishing most of his attacks.

    • @brooksk.5330
      @brooksk.5330 6 років тому

      Michael Henry I did right after I posted that this morning, second phase was easy only took three charged heavy attacks to the nose and then a critical definitely had an easier time reading him after I kept just going in not expecting to live to see what I could hit and what I couldn't and learn his attacks.

    Worst boss I've ever played. Sekiro is 10 times easier then this boss. The fact you can barely see him at times is so stupid. Bad boss design. And how it's RNG (random) if you will hit his head, sometimes your off by a pixel, knowing you missed 15 hits the whole match when you successfully dodged is so stupid

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  5 років тому

      Yes, the camera problems in this fight can be infuriating and you should think hitting a boss of this size, can't be too difficult, but being limited to hit the head is also a bit annoying ^^ But Sekiro also had similar infuriating camera parts to be fair, but the enemies die at least faster.

    Hello, great guide!
    I just have one little question, when midir goes crazy and spams his laser everywhere, I find it very difficult to dodge when you are not close to him. Unfortunately, he does this attack most of the time when I am far away from him, stupid lizard…
    Do you have any advice on how to dodge it? Or should i just try to run as far as i can from him to try to avoid his laser?

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you ^^
      On distance I found it really hard to dodge too (but I have not put much research into this). If I'm not mistaken it follows a very similar pattern (that has some tracking) every time so in theory if you recognize the pattern you should be able to dodge into the direction the laser is not going next. I find it most easy, when you are able to run between his legs. But also there you can get hit and need to move a bit.

From 35% hp to a oneshot just from that interaction. just a quick slap on the toe and he was dead at that point. Praise our lord and saviour Midir for going easy on me.

      Yes the laser is extremely deadly and that can be very annoying. I think the most dangerous one is his super crazy laser attack where he lasers the whole area. Even if yo try standing below him, you can get hit, so you have to move a bit even there, though you are relatively save. The other laser attack can be avoided as show in the video, but ofc you need to recognize it fast. Good luck on you fight!

    Ugh. I've gotten to the very end twice now. Both times with one hit's worth of health left he flies to the opposite side of the arena and does that laser combo to one shot me. That's all I came here to see but you don't explain how to avoid it if you're not right next to him when he starts.

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  4 роки тому +1

      If you are far away, it's really a bit random (it seems to have slight tracking). You have to really focus on where the laser is going and keep moving. I would say to the left, if the laser comes close roll. The first laser beam comes directly at you. The part of the attack 2nd makes some kind of X so it is somewhat parallel to your running direction, which is very dangerous. And than it basically repeats a 2nd time: laser comes to you (a bit more left swing in it from your perspective) you followed by another X (it's not really an X but something like it more a + pattern) with the last part of the + coming at you again (I think it needs to be dodged).
      Representing the laser coming at you with the letter "I", it's:
      I X I +
      First laser is easy to dodge. the X can be dangerous, but the last 2 are the tricky part.
      I hope that helps :)
      PS: his left foot (if you look at him: the right side) is the safe place (be close), even though it can happen that he hits you there, there is one laser usually going close to his right foot between his legs.

      Took me a few times the first time I fought him. But he has a lot of HP, takes only little damage and can kill you quite fast, which is difficult to beat. Once you understand what to do and when to attack, he becomes a lot less scary, but that is true for all bosses with little to no RNG elements in them. Considering that difficulty is imo the probability of failing to defeat a boss, this is a boss where it's initially pretty high. But with some knowledge the probability to defeat him increases rapidly. More so than by pure e.g. muscle memory and recognizing patterns very fast, because he is very well telegraphed and relatively "slow". So people that can make use of their knowledge they gain during the fight, will not struggle as much. He has some nasty attacks that can one shot you, so there is little room for mistakes. I assume here people struggle.

    4:09 Cut the video. Cut the video...!! LOL Weak, man. Just show it. Makes us feel a bit better about being human.

      You can survive the bite, but for a guide I can't assume that is the case for every player. I also trained until I could beat him very consistent. Still I usally a get hit here and there. One or two of those flying "things" from the 2nd phase often hit me. The crazy laser attack sometimes hit me too, even when I'm below him. But often it works like you seen at 10:03 min
      PS: I recorded multiple tries. One was without clothes.

      @@ThePhilosophersGames This guy was just too much. I used a phantom to win first time through so my first true solo attempt was in NG+. Game made me pay for the first time in spades. Straight flogged my cheeks. Been awhile since I was left shaking after beating a boss. Thanks for the Intel, commander. :)

    Been 3 years, but this guide was perfect. Tried a couple times at launch and got completely destroyed. After watching this guide I killed him on the first try. I used all my estus, but fealt prepared, and wasn't suprised by anything.
    Thanks.

    I’m absolutely blown away. It seems like common sense especially with dark souls’ experience, patience. The way he worded that was perfect to what I needed to hear to apply my knowledge and skill from prior attempts. I’m about to go give this big boi a whoopin’ now!

      I think it’s worth mentioning, I beat him within thirty minutes of watching. Thanks so much!

      Congratulations :) Happy my guide helped you out. Yes agreed, it may sound simple even if you already played the game so much, but patience is so important in this game and sometimes you forget, esp. if you get better at it and think you can beat every boss easy. Many bosses and enemies are always good at killing you ^^

    Something to add on is a slightly easier way to avoid the beam attack in his first phase: when he begins the attack, position yourself a little to Midir's right and wait for him to shoot the beam straight out in front of him. Wait for the ground explosion after the beam and stand where the beam was. Move back a bit to make sure you don't get hit by the beam later in the attack. This makes the attack easier and much simpler to avoid but almost impossible to punish. Depends on how defensive or aggresive you wanna play.

      Yes, that's a good hint (also relatively easy to do), esp when you play more defensive. Thank you for sharing :)

      @@ThePhilosophersGames Thank you! I watched this guide after beating Midir (so satisfying to learn him and his patterns) to see what I could improve on for my next battle with him, this guide is so thorough compared to others I've seen that just say "roll through his attacks" and that's it.

      yes, if you learn a difficult boss it can become rally fun beating him. E.g. the Fume Knight in DaS2 can be like a dance.
      Thank you :) I try to make my guides (actually all my videos) quite in depth. Really surprised it got so many views. Sadly making a guide in this style takes quite some time, that's probably the reason why nobody on YT does it this way.
