He's not normalizing Hitler he's ridiculing him.
Ridiculing, but also, this Adolf is the product of Jojo's imagination. He is the fantasy mentor/leader/friend that Jojo clings to as a coping mechanism. And as his perspective on and feelings regarding the Nazi ideology, and Hitler himself, changed/evolved, so did the Hitler in his mind (and Taika's portrayal of him).
It's almost like people don't remember who Mel Brooks is.
This reactor is an idiot. Doesn't know video from film, doesn't grasp sarcasm, has no concept of history.
Taika made Hitler silly basically to declaw him. Hitler was a highly insecure little man who demanded to be taken seriously. Yes, he was also a monster and a tyrant, but he wouldn't mind being remembered or portrayed that way. What he would hate is to be laughed at. Because if you can laugh at someone, then you take away their power.
Also, it's not really Hitler; it's a little boy's imaginary friend manifesting as that little boy's idea of Hitler.

Taika did zero research on Hitler (Hitler hated cigarettes), he was not technically playing Hitler but was the personification of a 10 year old boy's indoctrination.
The footage at the beginning is real, he was a rock star. To understand how this happens, look at the US, it is happening in real time.

This isn't actually a very helpful statement. First of all, you can't understand something just by looking at it, you have to study it in-depth or all you have is a first impression based on what other people have told you to believe. Secondly, if you're comparing the rise of Trump to the rise of Hitler, then you don't actually understand either particularly deeply. Yes, on a surface level and at a glance they look similar, but the deeper you dig into the details the more differences appear. Thirdly, if you're comparing Trump himself to Hitler himself, then you're just as brainwashed as JoJo was at the start of this film, and in much the same way. Based on diving into original footage of events and primary sources, there are no greater liars in the modern era than the mainstream news media, except for maybe the worst of the politicians. This makes sense actually, considering the ramifications of certain elements of Operation Paperclip.

This movie is pure genius
You have to remember that at this time period Hitler had declared "Total War". Which meant he wanted to arm EVERY man (regardless of age); all women and all children. You have to watch this as intended. Through the eye's of a 10 year old, who has ALWAYS believed all the propaganda. Taika was excellent in his role as Hitler, and the fact he is Jewish, only adds to the irony of his performance. I'm 63, and cry like an old grandmother when they reveal the moms shoe's, hanging. I even get emotional when captain K takes the attention off JoJo, sparing him. His character is shown as a Gay man. Hitler had the same feeling toward them that he had for Jew's; Gypsies; Black's and the handicapped. Oh, the Jesse Owens comment is because the 1936 Olympics' were held in Germany and when Jesse won the Gold Medal, Hitler stormed out of the Game's early! Peace, later!
the Old Testament in the Bible says that jewish people were chosen by God (like to be saved by Moses, escape from Egypt etc). That's most likely the reference, Elsa is hinting to. :)
This film is really great, especially when you're a Taika Waititi fan. I didn't expect to have also dark scenes, but really enjoyed the movie, especially all the hints, like the relationship between Klenzendorf and Finkel. Still need to read the book, though
I read the book -- beautifully written and constructed but so so dark. I do not recommend it
I really liked that scene. As a Christian and follower of the new and Old Testament, God also chose for Jesus to be Jewish. God trumps little man that can’t grow a full mustache any day

Understanding the take on Hitler it is good to look at the portrayals that Neo Nazis love. They Love American History x, even though the nazis are the bad guys in that, but they are cool and strong. You know which depiction of Hitler they can't stand? The Producers where he is a weak comedy figure. So by portraying Hitler as a weak pathetic little man who can't grow a full mustache he is undercutting the German strong man mythos.
It also has alot to do with JoJo's point of view. He first views Hitler as a friend, then slowly as he is deradicalized he is less friendly, then he is shown as he was a sniveling little shit.

This is just your second reaction i watched, and i really liked it (probably because this movie means quite something to me and i could talk alot about, more than i am gonna do in a yt comment). I seen some people (well, one) being annoyed by your questions, but asking some very fundamental questions can be really important. I would honestly love having a discussion with you about some of them (though this is also something i am not gonna do in the youtube comments).

Taika waititi is Jewish, and I believe he has Holocaust survivors in his family. And you can kind of tell by the way he handled this story.

For me the best part about this is Hitler would have been horrified that a half Mori half Jewish portrayed him. Almost an ultimate insult from Hitler's point of view.

you ask questions alot of people dont think about. One thing you hinted at was how so many people could follow one man to think the way they did back then. Thats an amazing question. That can be applied to the USA too. Trump people or Brandon people. Its a fascinating question. Why?
I wish I could answer that question, but it seems since homo sapiens sapiens could think, we have followed people. I am trying to not follow people, but follow logic and want to spread that philosophy to everyone I encounter. Thanks for your comment
@@PIForever there's a logical answer to that, charisma anf rethoric (idk if it is spelled like this, english is not my first language). If we go back to ancient Greece we can find Aristoteles, one of the founders of the rethoric, there's a vook that he wroye about how to use it and how to convince people. I must say i used some of his tricks and they actually work. I remember in a class i had, we analyzed a speech from hitler and yes, he qas using totalmy this method. Specially this thing called Pathos, he used the emotions, the fear.
I agree, we all need to learn more about politics. I don’t agree that every conversation is politics. Politics is how we go about organizing our society. If you want to talk about the local sheriff, or whether the police in your community have the right tools to successfully perform their mission in society, then yes, it is a political discussion. But we can also discuss sports, or the weather, or other topics that just require good manners and the ability to listen. I think more education in manners and social communication would be healthy.

Many people in Germany did research, in church records (anyone who was not Christian was immediately suspected of being a Jew) and/or family doctors and scientists. It was a social programme, unfortunately not "only" Hitler. German society at that time did not necessarily define itself by who belonged to it, but above all by who did not(!) belong to it. And that unleashed an insane power. In addition to all the laws and persecution organisations.
The IBM corporation was instrumental in them being able to compile and apply that data.
I’m very conflicted about the Captain K. character. On one hand he was a Nazi officer, but on the other hand he saved the two kids. I always wondered about his backstory in terms of how he became a Nazi and what turned him around. I’d almost like to see an entire movie just on his character.
Many people, including those in the military, saw the war as a cause for the sake of Germany, not necessarily for the Nazi political party. Think about how many civilians America has caused in foreign wars, but we don't usually view the average soldier as a war criminal.
There is also huge hints that Captain K is a closeted homosexual with a relationship with Finkel. Just like Jojo is trying to be a good german but is hiding a jew, Captain K is trying to be a good soldier but is hiding his sexuality. Most of the main characters of this story lead double lives.

A military captain who's been demoted to running a kid's summer camp at the height of the war? Hardly a "Nazi officer." Plus a lot of the German military had a centuries-long tradition of honorable service that the Nazis co-opted. Plus, it's strongly implied that he's hiding the fact that he's gay.
I guess he could have chose to be shot for being a traitor to his country, that's the choices that German men had at that time.
He was likely in the regular German army and then got stuck as the Hitler youth babysitter. He seems determined to protect his homeland and then his hometown, but doesn't seem to buy into any of the ideology, showed by him protecting Elsa. He also knows the way the war is going (as does ScaJo) and that they're going to lose. Considering his relationship with Alfie Alan and the pink triangle, he's almost certainly gay, and homosexuals were murdered by the Nazis. So as he went out in the final battle, he got to be himself.

Hollywood is an entertainment industry. I wish people would stop to expect to be educated... including myself. Even Schindlers List (probably one of the best) takes artistic liberties... which is totally fine, dont get me wrong, but one should take everything with a grain of salt (or a box of salt in some cases). Thats why I loved this reaction, but I wont try to educate here... knowledge simply takes effort to acquire. Even most documentaries are pleasantly superficial and designed to entertain.
I think your perspective on Waititi's portrayal of Hitler would change if you knew Taika Waititi is Jewish. He's not making light of the issue, he's making fun of Hitler the same way we make fun of Kim Jong Un, and he's not portraying Hitler, he's portraying the imaginary friend of an indoctrinated child who only knows Nazi propaganda.
Based on your commentary, it seems like you missed a lot of the jabs made by the Nazi's, like Captain K saying the attack that disabled him was entirely preventable, that it seems like things are going poorly but that's not what he's being told by his superiors. It also seems like you don't know much about WWII or Judaism if you don't know what God a Jewish girl is referring to. I'd encourage you to look at more factual media before you look at the satirical parody.

Germans always made fun of themselves that's why there's a lot of movies about Hitler. JoJo mom was keeping captain K secret and she was keeping his secret plus captain K came by the house to tell JoJo about what happen to his mom but they was already there going through her stuff. There's only one God and he has plenty of names and come in different forms.
First you don’t understand that Hitler is Jojo’s imaginary friend and then you start questioning a load of generalised questions that are next to irrelevant in the context of this film, like “what is god” and the scope of what is politics. This is the most stupid reaction to this film that I have seen and I have watched all that I could find on UA-cam

@@PIForever Means you missed the concept of Hilter being the personification of an indoctrinated 10 year old's imaginary friend. You even stated well into the movie of why Hilter was being portrayed in such a light hearted, comical way. This is probably because you came into this with preconceived notions of how Hilter should be portrayed. You took the beginning literally which confused you through the movie.
Somehow it's not immediately obvious to some people. The movie is from the ten year old's perspective. This boy was indoctrinated to the extreme his entire life. Hitler is the boy's imaginary friend and behaves the way a ten year old boy would imagine. His entire system of beliefs collides with the actual terror of the nazi state and horror of war arriving in his town. He learns the tragic truth. This message of the movie is certainly relevant to us in the US in 2023.
Why is it relevant in 2023, aside from people STILL attacking Israel?
@@Parallax-3D During the 3rd Reich Israel didn't exist so that's not relevant. The reason the movie's message applies today is also not obvious to some people. I shouldn't be surprised at that but somehow I'm still disappointed.

@@michellecrocker2485 This was not a portrayal of Hitler, this was a 10 year old boy's imaginary friend. It was the personification of Jojo's indoctrination. Jojo was born and raised while the Nazi party was in power. He was brainwashed in school, and at hilter youth camp. Since this story was told from a 10 years old's point of view, everything seemed normal and fun at first and his image of Hitler was a hero best friend. But as he started to grow attached to this Jewish girl and start to understand his reality more, his image of hitler became more of a jerk, but the way a 10 year old would perceive a jerk, because Jojo couldn't imagine how horrific the Nazi's truly were. He was sheltered from that.

To answer your question on how the Nazis figured out who was jewish, many many jewish people look jewish. It’s not just a religion, it’s a race as well. Because jewish people can only marry other jews and have been doing so for 3000 years it’s created a distinctive jewish look.
Also they based it off of family trees, where you lived (jewish neighborhoods), etc.
And i disagree with your perspective that race was created. Race is a real thing, it’s a blend of your genetics and culture. a matrix of different quirks, features, and cultural oddities that collide to create a unique flavor of person.
We’re all human, skin color is like the difference between white meat and dark meat, race is the marinade. But at the end of the day, we’re all just hunks of meat.
I love your commentary btw. And while we may disagree on some interpretations of race, we both agree that race (whether real or created) is no basis whatsoever to negatively judge someone and we should all treat eachother with love and respect regardless of differences.

majority of what you said is true except about jewish people having a certain look, majority of jews have middle eastern characteristics, a lot of Jews look like people that follow Islam and vice versa.
@@kevinprzy4539 well there’s Ashkenazi Jews which are the ones Hitler targeted and the ones i’m talking about and Sephardi Jews which are the middle eastern jews.
Ashkenazi Jews have their own physical traits, spend 1000 years in Europe and don’t marry outside the religion and certain physical traits are gunna become more dominant in your genetic pool. We even got our own genetic diseases. Ashkenazis don’t look middle eastern anymore and haven’t for a long long while, Sephardi Jews still do though.
But yeah i would agree that the reason Ashkenazi jews have curly hair and look different from most other European races is because they came from the middle east and those are genes that’s have remained dominant but compared to Saphardic Jews Ashkenazi look hella different
@@BootyFish Yeah Ashkenazi jews and sephardic jews definitely look different but most of the Ashkenazi jews I know and met have a lot of middle eastern traits like larger noses, skin that goes from white to tan and not white to red (when in sunny climates) and curly hair. But I’ve also met Ashkenazi jews that have blonde hair and blue eyes.
well not hella different, it’s real time evolution, what happens when a group of people move north. Over time they start to look more European. Skin and hair adapts to the change in sun.
