Just to clarify, Captain K didn't betrayed Rosie. They're also part of the Resistance. Rosie's already dead before the Gestapo knocked on Jojo's house. It's the reason for the thorough search, they already know about his mom and is searching for more evidence. Captain K and Freddy then immediately biked their way to check on Jojo, because they must've heard what happened to Rosie. Captain K deliberately took Elsa's papers so that he's the one to check them and hide inconsistencies (the picture and birthday was wrong), he even said that she looked like a ghost in the picture because he knows the real Inge is already dead. Also, he and Freddy were secretly a gay couple (with hints throughout the film), which is also prohibited in the N*zi. He said to Jojo that Rosie is a good woman, because she knows and she accepts them.

Also, you can see the defeat in his posture as he hands the documents to the Gestapo when he said wait a minute and inquired about the book. Also, when he immediately apologizes for yelling at him almost like they were a couple. You really dont see them alone either lol. My favourite bit of trivia about this is when in Interview someone asked Taika "So what preparation did you do to play Hitler? How did you get in character?" and he replied (paraphrasing) "None, I did no preparation, my act was a complete satire, a total piss-take, because fuck Hitler. He's not worth my time. Not only should he know that he's being played by a half Polynesian half Jewish man, a brown Jewish person, but he should know that that that brown Jewish person is putting in minimum effort to get it right, and maximum effort to make him look silly, because fuck him."

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 9 місяців тому +12

She definitely missed and/or misunderstood so many aspects of this film, which is a shame. But it seems to be common among a lot of people who aren't very familiar with WW2 and the nazi regime. She didn't seem to know what the Hitler Youth was nor the capture of Berlin. Or when she said that the Gestapo wouldn't be that adamant about searching for something in a book. Like, huh? It's the freaking GESTAPO.
Shame too, because this film is 100x better if you understand all the little nuances and innuendos Taika incorporated into it.

One of the interesting themes in this film is how the film itself parallels war: in the beginning it's all silly and a bit surreal when it's far off, but it becomes deadly serious when it shows up at your door.

Gosh ! That japanese-style screen reminded me your Ghibli reactions, from your previous account/channel.
I'm still mad they just can't let reactors in peace with that. It's a double loose for them : people who have already seen their movies (and much probably bought them in DVD/BR) get bitter at their policy and less likely to go watch new movies (well... if they even make new movies, it's been ages since I've heard about a Ghibli movie coming in theater). And people who haven't seen them don't have those great reactions that could encourage them to buy their movies. It's literally free advertisement for them, and they say "No, we don't accept you to do that".
Anyway, great reaction, and I'm totally in for discovering reactions you left aside !

The opening scenes were there to illustrate Hitler's rock star status for many Germans.
A dirty little secret is that many early Nazi leaders were gay. They were some of the major targets during the Night of the Long Knives.
Hitler was a spell-binding speaker. William Shirer (who also wrote The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich) wrote Berlin Diaries, adapted from his own diary entries. He spoke fluent German, and spent many years in Germany before the war as a correspondent for CBS, back when they had real journalists. It's a fascinating read.

What a WONDERFUL reaction to a truly great film! I ADORE this film. It has made its way into my Top 20 films of all-time.
Many of the greatest comedies have tears, as well. "CITY LIGHTS" and "MODERN TIMES" by Charlie Chaplin. "PLEASANTVILLE"... "AMELIE"... If you haven't seen these films, you certainly should!
The BRILLIANCE of this film is that it takes a whole new way of looking through the darkest time in recent history. Through the eyes of a child. It so accurately captures how a child could (like many Germans) be swept up into the horrors of a Cultish Nazi fanaticism. (The Beatlemania beginning was perfect) It shows through comedy the ridiculous nature of their beliefs and actions. Then is slowly tears it all apart with the simple presence of a wonderful Mom and a Jewish girl. Actually meeting the girl allows empathy and understanding to flow. This was such a brilliant stroke. ...and it all lead up to the moment where a followed butterfly leads to one of the great moments in cinema. It never fails to move me.

It is also great, why I cannot tell, it would be a spoiler. Its worth watching.

PS a fun fact that lets you know they did a decent amount of homework for this film. The fact that Jojo's sister was never reported as dead by her mother was a common thing during the war in Germany. Because of food rationing during the later years it was common for people to not report the deaths of family members, and people would often even help dispose of of the bodies without State officials knowing about it. So a family of 4 would get the food rations of a family of 4 instead of a now family of 3. During the later years the food rationing was pretty intense. Was so bad that they'd send people door to door counting potatoes making sure you were not stealing, or lets say getting more food than was allocated by the State by other means. However, doing what Jojo's mother did, by not reporting the death of his sister was considered a punishable crime. Because in the eyes of the Nazi Party, you were stealing not just from the State, but stealing food from another German's mouth who would need it.
Being Jojo's mom had an additional person in the house to take care of, she seems to have decided to take that risk. She was already taking many risk.

Nice to see Lil VKunia. Great movie and I'm wondering if you picked upon on things you said before in some of your analysis and think that you may have been a bit off on it. Wonderful reaction. Jojo Rabbit is a comedy but it doesn't mean that it has to be serious all the time. I guess it would be a dark comedy, if you want to categorize it. The Hitler Youth Camps were real and they did do a fair amount of indoctrination and brain washing to these young minds. But I like how Jojo made up his own mind about stuff. The mother was probably found out from someone else being arrested and interrogated and the Sam Rockwell character was covering for her and the young Jew. It seemed like you may have thought he turned her in. The shoes bit was really good and I thought we might see them when they were framed earlier on but that was a gut punch.

There is not always a place to hide from the bombing. For example, for the second year I have been living under sirens and explosions. Over time, you stop noticing the air raid siren, it's like a mosquito, there's nothing to be done. You just live on.

It requires artistic skills to combine comedy and bloody serious scenes like they did here, and make it work. Even in the same scene we see the Captain dressed like a clown in his fancy uniform and cape, while we also see the Germans, down to last civil man, woman and child in uniforms, fighting, which probably did happen in the last battles of the war.

No, Stephen Merchant wasn't in Inglourious Basterds. He's a comedian who's mostly known for having co-written and acting in several shows with Ricky Gervais (The Office, Extras, Life's Too Short, an Idiot Abroad). He also voiced Wheatley in Portal 2. The only non-comedy I can think of offhand that he's been in is Logan.

I facepalmed at "same font used in shrek". Yeah, because Shrek is a german style fairytale. Its called Fraktur - A classic german style font used since the 16th century. It's used in TONS of stuff, especially if associated with German culture, or the Nazi party. The Shrek producers didn't invent it 😂

I didn't know you had bunnies. They're awesome little friends. I miss my fiancee's rabbit, Scout. He never gave me kisses like he would with her, but he loved to jump up on the couch and snuggle with me while I watched TV. Or he'd sit at my feet while I was on my computer. Sadly, he passed a few years ago, while he was snuggling on the couch with me. I hope your bunnies are doing well.

Thing is V, its not a comedy. Its an EXTREMELY serious movie about a very serious subject just told through a filter of a childs imaginary world mixed with reality and that pokes fun at the inherent ludicrous stupidy of it all. The comedy just comes naturally without needing to be forced (ok perhaps Taiko's performance as imaginary Hitler is a teensy little bit over the top and excesively silly for effect but you get the idea) Its a bloody masterpiece!
