So I thought I'd dig up my original 2011 17 inch Macbook Pro which is older than the one fixed 2 days ago so I can try to fix it with your solution. It has OSx 10.9.5 Mavericks. The csrutil cmd is not recognized after using Single User Mode & Terminal while in Recovery Mode. So I decided to go onto the next steps since I got nothing to lose. Well lo and behold. This fixed the bad GPU/display issue and the display is behaving normally even though I could not use the csrutil cmd. I am so happy I found your video!!! Thank you once again for sharing your detailed solution which has given new life to 2 Macbook Pro's both over 12 years old. Again, you are a genius!!!

THANK YOU!!! I had the same problem with my 2011 MacBook Pro. I took it to an authorized Apple repair shop and they replaced the graphics card for $450. I didn’t use my MacBook for a few weeks (should have). When I started using it more frequently I started having the same exact problem again and unfortunately I was past the repair warranty. My boot loop had a purple Apple logo with low resolution, pixilated graphics. I followed all of your steps here and I’m back to a working computer again!!! Seriously can’t thank you enough for your video and this solution, it’s NOWHERE to be found online! I’m going to forward this video to the repair shop so they can learn how to properly fix this problem.

Holy cow! I can’t believe it! It worked! I guess I’ve been fortunate that up to two months ago, my 10 year old early 2011 MPB did not suffer the GPU failure. But it finally happened, and I was pretty much resigned to the fact that I’d be shelling out $$$$ for a new laptop. While I had backed up many of my files, there were some that I hadn’t, and I thought they were lost for good. Thank you Crazy Will! You’ve bought me some time to backup the rest of my files and, with some luck, continue using my MPB, which I still really like.

Mine was stuck too... Simply create a bootable osx drive on another laptop... You can use windows also with transmac or create a bootable usb using virtual machine... I used virtual machine by following a guide from geekrar website. Then downloaded os using dosdude1 patcher... Once my usb was setup i booted into my laptop holding alt(option) key and booted into usb... Then from top i selected utilites and selected terminal and turned off csrutil that way... Other steps i followed from this video...

My macbook was sitting in a closet for a year because I had this exact problem and didn't want to pay for a new graphics card. This is the first youtube video I've found that 100% worked (I tried multiple solutions to no avail). This got me back into the computer to recover old files. Can't thank you enough I am in disbelief that this worked.

I suspected it was a GPU issue and once I googled those key words (it filled in '2011' lol), I came across your video. When I logged in after finishing and saw my backlit keyboard light up, I knew that it was successful. I was soooooo happy and relieved. These machines are not cheap and you saved me in many ways. I'm on a new mission. As I need windows 10 on the MBP I had bootcamp installed. It was way easier to at least access W10 in safe mode and disable AMD drivers. The impossible thing is for W10 to recognize intel integrated GPU, since bootcamp installation disables it (I understand it is because W10 doesn't get along with switching graphics. Funny thing, is with W8.1 switching graphics work, and 2011 MBPs do not officially support W10, but present versions bootcamp disables iGPU anyway).
So W10 now basically runs on Microsoft Basic Display adapter, which the best possible resolution is 1600x1200 (best for display is 1920x1200). I got Intel HD Graphics driver installed, but the drivers don't seem to recognize the iGPU (I'm sure drivers are the right ones).
In any case, my mission now is to get at least a mod to MBD adapter's resolution to accept 1920x1200 (this guy actually modified it to work on a few resolutions, but not that one: ywjheart.wordpress.com/2014/04/19/modify-microsoft-basic-display-driver-to-get-a-better-resolution/). I know it is a patch, more than a solution, but through what I read, I understand it is not possible with windows installed through bootcamp, to enable integrated GPU.

This is my second time around because of an OS update. Q) I wonder if removing the AMDRadeonX3000 graphics card (if it's separately mounted on the board) would force the System to recognize the system graphics card by default when it updates the OS software. Your thoughts? Thx!

Nice! My 2011 15' mac book pro laptop has life again. Originally my laptop had RAM issue 8 years ago which would randomly shut off or get stuck on sleep mode, instead of using two 4GB sticks, i use one 8GB stick. Recently I left it on sleep mode overnight and it got stuck on the green screen boot loop, after disabling the GPU, i was able to go to recovery mode and fix it. I was ready to decommission it , but now it has a couple more service years left as a backup. Thanks to you, it will live on!

I had the same problem with the 2018 MacBook Air. It’s something Apple could only do. I had to go to Best Buy and geek squad couldn’t do anything. Had to send it to Texas to apple facility. They said it was PRAM reset. That’s funny because I did it several times and so did geek squad. I think they had to change something out and didn’t tell us.

Will this procedure affect brightness control, HDMI video output, among others?
I want to replace the original drive with an SSD. Should I first install High Sierra on the new drive and upgrade it before doing the whole procedure? Will I still be able to upgrade the OS? I'm a designer so sorry for my questions :-)

Unfortunately you will have no HDMI different reports on the brightness Controls so that could be a yes or no. Can’t do pram reset or upgrades. The fix lives on the hard drive so I would set up the SSD first.

I have a problem with the MacBook Pro 2016 model, where the graphics are weak when I turn on the laptop after not having switched it on for a while. The graphics would “fix” itself after 2 to 5 minutes of operating the computer. The kind of graphics problems that i see, is some flickering and a sort of horizontally striped display. I kinda think there is a problem with the power circuit, but I’m not sure. The battery works fine. And I have tried to the key combos, with no consistent solution, as the problem can only be reproduced by not using the MacBook for some hours. Does any know what’s actually going on here?
Also I should mention that if the MacBook is left for like days or weeks without being on, the apple boot logo might not show up or sometimes I need to press on the power button twice to turn it on.

Because this is my second time booting it up successfully after getting away from the blue screen with vertical lines, and I was hoping this video could be the final solution to me avoiding the need to go through the whole command screen thing again.

Now i want to install that plus its op system on a parttition on a mac 2011 that already is working and doesnt have a faulty card. As its probably ‘remembered’ the setting, to bypass the external graphics card - when it doesnt need to - its making slow graphics ( only on the added os on new partition ) so i think theres a conflict ?
Can the process be reversed ? So that it does go back to use the external card ? Thanks

I powered down the computer waited 15 seconds and tried to boot up but there was no chime, black screen and faint sound of fan. I tried to go back through the steps again but couldn’t even reset SMC.
