- This video's a little rough because camera-pointed-at-screen but I thought I'd record this method for disabling a busted AMD GPU on a MacBook Pro. It's not the best work-around as I explain in the video, but if you GPU is toast and you need the laptop to work, it might just get you out of a pinch.

You my friend... Are a bloody legend..!! Worked perfectly
Let's not exaggerate. It's just a little worm that lives inside the fruit. Minor drawbacks, I mean let's just ignore it... because the picture looked so "beautiful" lol.
Seriously though, thanks so much for sharing, young Graham, as I read your paragraph in the description and all the subscriber comments. All the best.
hey buddy! love the video so far! when booting into arch linux it is not recognizing the command nomodeset. am i doing something wrong? cheers!
Sir, thank you for the only clear and well pronounced explanation of this rather esoteric procedure anywhere on the net.
Question: "Find My Mac" is disabled claiming it's due to a "Missing Recover Partition". I have applied this EFI patch to a new install of Sierra to bandaid the AMD Video Card problem and was wondering if the patch produced this glitch of a missing recovery partition.
Again, thank you so very much!
Hi, very interesting subject, I could try that method to revive two MBP 2011 with bad AMD gpus. Could you give us the link to download the ISO file please. Thanks
Cheers! Probably the best solution out there as the screen of the MacBook Pro I fixed was unreadable when loading the desktop as it uses the dodgy AMD GPU over using the Intel video chip (used on boot) and if I tried to fix it via the Mac command line "csrutil" doesn't exist on Mountain Lion OS.
man, you have saved my mac; i hope to buy another one, but in meantime i can use it. thanks a lot
I'm trying to follow this video but when I get to 4:00, I dont have the same line showing on my screen, and if I inset NOMODESET, i press enter and nothing happens. Or if I press F10, it comes up with an error. GRRRRRRRRRRRR
After a few reboots the display stopped working.
I used it a couple times and upgraded the RAM.
Now no display. No chime. Just the fan, hdd and DVD spins up. The power LED glows and stays dim till I force shutdown. Tried using the old RAM still nothing.
I tried resetting the pram by holding cmd+option+p+r. Still no change.
Any idea ??
anyone know if I will be able to edit video properly after doing this? will I be able to run final cut x on the macbook?
Fantastic ToyZ, the hd 3000 is better in rendering, yes you can perfctly use final cut pro x with hd 3000 (integrated card)

What version Archlinux is this because the new one ive downloaded in 2024 does not work.
Hi after editing the variables it works but when I shutdown the computer it goes bad again please what am I doing wrong
Hi "Adamant IT"... Is there a way to just disable the main graphics card of using the "built-in display", but continuing to use an external monitor? What means that I could still use my basic graphic card to the laptop screen and the "damaged other" to an other display... (for instance, i'm already with Catalina in a 2011 MBPro 17")
i got a 2011 macbook pro 13inch model a1278 for free. it doesnt have an amd gpu. it reads as intel. however it seems to be overheating and freezing up my machine. im assuming its the gpu because when it freezes the display gets funky. and ive replaced the thermal paste on the cpu. is there a bypass for my model/gpu?

Hi, great video, thanks for putting this out there. I have a mid 2014 15" retina with Nvidia GT750, The gfx card works fine but I only get 1.5 hours on battery so I wanted to disable it in EFI. You mentioned that the macbook you were working on in this video would consume more battery after the editing of the gpu-prefs, would that apply to my situation? I was hoping it would mean my fans would not need to blast on all the time and I could just use the integrated GPU for longer battery life. Thanks again for the great walkthrough.
I was unable to locate the GPU-power-prefs EFI variable in my list. Any ideas? I have a A1286 macbook pro. This is the closest ive come to fixing this apple forsaken paperweight. Please let me know.
@@Adamant_IT Thank you very much that worked for me. Yes GPU-power-prefs EFI is not on my list as well, did as you suggested and move straight to writing the new power pref file.

That's a nice fix.
Do you have a similar solution for Macbooks with Nvidia GPU?
This is a great video, you can use this on a Mac mini 2011 with Amd Radeon HD 6630m, the power consumption isn't the problem and in my use case as server, the graphics performance aren't a big problem either. So I can pick one of those failed Mac mini's up for a bargain 😄
I have a problem when I want to write the file with printf, it gives me printf write error invalid argument and I wrote correctly the string, The serious question could you upload that file and I copy it from linux? gpu-power-prefs...

I was given one but my screen is just black. Only way to use it is through an external monitor via mini display port.
I feel that you could probably write a efi script for the titan ridge card flashed for a Mac Pro so that it boots the right way the first time and doesn't need a soft boot.
If i only known some years a go things that i learned today. Thanks!
Does this work with High Sierra? I’ve been doing this many times, but when I turn off my Mac and restart it gets stuck on the start up screen.
Sam craig I had the exact same problem. I think the gpu working in the background is the reason for this. Follow this tutorial it solved it for me.

Hey mate I have late 2013 retina 15inch and I don't know what's wrong with but it boots superslow and it has killed few SSD drives until now sometimes when it boots is gonna work until I log in and then will eventually crash or freezes other times when booted from external drive will both half way and fans will get loud and it will shut down it self without any explanation under Verbose mode it says igpu is failed to switch back and waiting for another 60 seconds and few times the same explains slow boot .. Hi, i’m getting chattr not found but i do have gpu power prefs on ls. Any ideas?
Could I keep a copy of EFI folder and use it again? Or would I need to do the fix again? After a software update I mean?
what is the reason for increased battery consumption? I assume amd gpu still runs and just wastes power without doing anything? If so, can the tool like gSwitch be used to turn it off ?
Hi sir
Is this will work for a 2011 imac 27".
here is a qyestion; I have one of theese macs with amd gpu, its working fine so far, and I want to keep it that way for as long as possible. What are the best advice for that? I use Gswitch tool all the time, so dedicated gpu is never used. I also keep the cpu under 60C basicallz always. Is that even helpful, is there something else I can be doing to prevent or prolong the failure? THanks

you mention board 820-2915 but mine is an older 2009 (although it's a MacBook Pro 15 that lists AMD Radeon in the System Profiler) -- what is different about the AMD in the 2915 board? Also, are there any specific symptoms that differentiate a failed/failing capacitor (330µF) vs failing/failed AMD chip? Thanks. p.s. I've seen both your vids on this problem (the other the cap replacement ala Louis R.'s method) and I'm just trying to decide which way to go -- if replacing the cap won't help, then no point in going that route.
Thanks for your reply. System Profiler: AMD Radeon HD 6750M, 512MB VRAM, Revision ID 0x0000; ROM revision 113-C0170L-573; gMux version 1.9.23, EFI driver version 01.00.573.
Logic board ID: 820-2565-A, 2009. Unibody type MacBook Pro 15".
I'm using the original Lion OS ('book given to me because person couldn't boot it up). After much trial, found that moving 3 files (kext) related to the AMD allowed what appears to be "normal" operation -- what comes across as cutting the AMD out of the loop. This is NOT the same thing as the capacitor repair you and Louis did that brings back the utility of the AMD chip (desirable). This kext removal/move just appears to disable the AMD (though not sure how to test that theory out).
In Mac OS 10.7 (higher versions probably differ): used Terminal:
sudo mkdir /amd_kexts/ (new directory -- didn't realize until much latter that this directory is at the Finder level!)
ls /system/library/extensions - shows list of extensions including kexts
.... partial list follows but these are the items that I focused on
ATIRadeonX1000.kext
ATIRadeonX1000GA.plugin
ATIRadeonX1000GLDriver.bundle
ATIRadeonX1000VADriver.bundle
ATIRadeonX2000.kext
ATIRadeonX2000GA.plugin
ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver.bundle
ATIRadeonX2000VADriver.bundle
ATIRadeonX3000.kext
ATIRadeonX3000GA.plugin
ATIRadeonX3000GLDriver.bundle
ATIRadeonX3000VADriver.bundle
new command ...
sudo mv /system/library/extensions/ATIRadeonX1000.kext /amd_kexts -- moves this kext out of the original location into this folder/directory "amd_kexts" (at Finder level)
... if perform another "ls command" as above, the ATIRadeonX1000.kext file is no longer present.
... performed similar command (mv) for the 2000 and 3000 kext files
sudo mv /system/library/extensions/ATIRadeonX2000.kext /amd_kexts
Phil:~ ed$ sudo mv /system/library/extensions/ATIRadeonX3000.kext /amd_kexts
exit -- command to logout
.
then rebooted - no glitches booting up (prior to this time the ONLY way I had of booting up was using CMD-S at startup, using the "NVRAM FACE28D-....F9:GPU-POWER-PREFS=%01/%00%00%00 - REBOOT, and there were still problems for certain programs that tried to use the AMD chip and at that point everything froze) and then ran a number of "problem programs" (that froze previously using the NVRAM "fix") and everything worked EXCEPT for some reason, won't recognize (unlock) my iPhone 5s so that I can transfer pics via Image Capture.
'book seems to run fine, doesn't appear to be slow (actually quite fast), doesn't seem overly warm (after several minutes, booting up several programs, several restarts to test things) IR (infrared) temps over "1" and "2" keys about 100F. Some programs transiently increase temp but then things settle back down.
I have contacted dosdude1 re his "fix" but this also cuts out the AMD chip (does not allow it to be used, unlike the capacitor fix you and Louis did). If this simple fix of mine continues to work on this 'book (again, using old OS but several programs I have won't work anyway w/ upgraded OS) doubt I'll risk taking that bad 300µF cap off and replacing it. I'll stick w/ the "KISS" approach!
Also, tried some approaches (such as the Arch-linux) but never was able to get that to work. Could be (?) because of my older OS?
forgot to remove this -- it's the "header" for each line from terminal and got left in by mistake when pasting:
Phil:~ ed$
should read just:
sudo mv /system/library/extensions/ATIRadeonX3000.kext /amd_kexts
8/8 Just got a note from dos lab (the dosdude1 site) and his reply was:
Demux is only for 2011 MBP that have the defective gpu. The 2009 issue is the capacitor as you state and should not need Demux.
So, eventually I MAY get up the courage to try the capacitor fix thus getting back my GPU!!! (though currently can't really complain since the integrated GPU is doing fine enough for the things I'm asking it to do -- at least so far)
