- Five years in the making, the Oso is unlike any mountain bike you've seen from Ibis... because it's not. With the first e-mountain bike from this Santa Cruz, California company, engineer Andy Jacques-Maynes and designer Roxy Lo have once again stepped outside the box to create a ride that defies expectations while staying true to Ibis's core values. Love the hollaback to the Mountain Cycle San Andreas. I was the original product manager at Mountain Cycle back when we were in San Luis Obispo. Wrote the manual for the San Andreas. Coincidentally, back then we were also supplying our Pro-Stop hydraulic disc brakes to Scot for his Ibis tandem bikes. The OSO looks to be a worthy continuation.

After three years I finally bought one and I can tell you this is the best e-bike I have bought so far, an absolutely amazing bike, I have the color lavender and have already converted it with orange Hope cranks and orange stem and orange Hope hubs are also coming on it !!!

I think E-bikes that look like a normal mountain bike is innovation. Like cell phones, computers, and TVs etc. all are much compact and sleek now days and offer the same or better experiences. For me personally I’m big on looks after performance when it comes to bikes. The thing that has turned me off about E-bikes is the huge down tube and kangaroo pouch like BB area. That being said I’m not a E-bike hater and loved riding them the couple times I ridden them. Definitely see myself owning one someday. For now I’ll keep riding my Ripmo
Exactly, for most of the riders, bikes ride really good. There aren't really a lot of bad riding bikes on the market. So we buy good riding bikes based on the looks. I prefer ebikes that are lighter and look more like normal bikes. Will stick with my ripmo too
I agree on the lighter e-bikes. Seems like a cope after spending 5 years on a new model just to be behind the curve on a very popular, emerging class of ebikes
It's the stuff that matters when you don't have the bike. After you've had it you no longer care about that. Had the same feelings but I no longer think about it.

@@Raumance that’s how I feel about most things in life, however not when it comes to MTB’s that’s just the way it is for me. With so many good looking bikes that ride good I choose to spend my money on something that offers both looks and performance. Take a look at the new Trek Fuel Ex E. That bike can kinda pass as a normal MTB. I have zero doubt that Ibis Oso doesn’t ride like a dream. After all it’s a Ibis

After being on my Oso for 3 months now... and seeing this video I can really appreciate what they are saying as per what I feel riding this bike. Just an awesome bike with endless fun, well ok, until you have to re-charge ;-) Thank you Ibis, Andy Han's, Scot and the rest of the crew!

There’s no way around it the weight does matter on a mountain bike!! I built up my large Ripley AF at 29 pounds with a fox 36 on the front!! Love this bike!!! Been killing it!!

The reason why bike companies make e-bikes that don't look like e-bikes is due to the poor state of legal status in the USA regarding allowing e-mtb'ing on State/Federal non-motorized dirt trails (aka mountain bike trails) - if they don't look like ebikes, the owners might not get accosted by park rangers or police. If only the cleverness that goes into these bikes could be focused at changing laws to allow eeb access on mtb trails

@Dan P I've plopped myself into a Michigan DNR sub committee that can recommend changes for e-mtb's for non-motorized dirt trails. I've discovered that officials have no idea about e-mtb's, so it's basically educating from square one. It's going to be a long climb, but - since I've been in on a few meetings, where they actually hear about e-mtbs - the comprehension is sinking in, and that's progress.....long way to go, and aside from IMBA support and cheerleading for e-mtb'ing in the states, the manufacturers who are making these things are invisible from the law-changing perspective. Where are they? And why are they so silent on a product that many of us in an older mtb-demographic (we also are the only ones that can afford these bikes) will likely add to our quiver of bikes as we get older and creakier.....?

Only one major disappointment is lack of a extender option. All the latest gen 3 eMTB’s should offer extenders
Speaking for myself, a large extended pack makes it feasible to ride to the trailhead, climb 5000-6000ft in a mid-assist mode, and ride home. This typically consumes over 900wH but it also means the car can stay at home.
Good video! As someone that seems to always be stuck between a large and medium sized frame, can you comment on your experience riding this? The reach on the large is almost too long to trust as suitable for someone in the 178cm range.

Been saying for years that eBikes should have the option to allow accessories to use the bike's battery. Lights, wireless droppers, shifters etc. Good for Ibis for at least adding the lights.

Love the San Andreas look...had one in the mid 90's and it turned some heads in the Capitol Forest for sure. Smart move going with the Bosch other than the display and control. Sure seems mid power is the new trend but full is where it's at (it's an ebike), I'll ride my acoustic if want to go lighter.
We went mid power (Orbea Rise H) based on weight. After a long day of riding and thoroughly wearing ourselves out, ten (or more) fewer pounds makes a difference when we are loading these bikes on the rack!

IT seems like alot of drive systems limit max torque to 85nm. I have a three year old Rocky Mountain with 108nm of max torque. This is a noticeable difference. I have been looking at my next Ebike and most seem to be in that 85nm max torque area. Any insight as to why?
I guess it has to do with the battery, 85nm seems to be the sweet spot to get sufficient miles/hours of battery.
Andy's asnwer on full 29'er on a medium confused me. Did he mean the M Oso can run a 29 rear, you just can't buy it from Ibis with 29 rear due to supply chain issues?
I see the guy running a DH fork on his oso. Is the oso compatible with a dh fork?

At the time of the design, the built in display was not available from Bosch. Those displays are actually still not available, although they have technically "released" it to the world. Basically, it would have delayed the launch/availability of the bike well over a year.

Interesting indeed.
But at between 10 and 17k for an ebike of this calibre, most riders will frown on it for the simple reason that it is expensive. The big three are competitive now with Ibis.
This is still an elitist brand with class, but but not all customers can enjoy parting with that much money for a bike. It’s weight is not bad but can be improved.
The position of that display unit on the handlebar is awkward as a tall person can easily hit it with their knee I believe... Something which should be moved or redesigned / modified to be interpreted better on the handlebar.
I guess like all bikes, there is room for improvement.
I bought the first generation and second Mojo designed by Roxy Lo and it cost quite a lot at the time but over the years it has done well for me and I have cared for it.
I am still riding the 2008 version and to trade it now for an ebike…
I think I will enjoy riding an mtb for now with the thrill between my legs being down to the Mojo and me…
I hope in years to come, the prices drop due to demand or prices in raw materials and Bosch’s batteries being redesigned at a relatively reduced cost to the customer.

Looking to getting my 1st eMTB in the near future. Looks like a cool bike, like the specs, motor and color color. The amount of travel, travel options is a big plus. I agree with Andy that 160-180 is a sweet spot for travel Looks like a Session, I mean Mountain Cycle San Andreas. Not of fan of all the Bosch's huge controller and Display mounted on the handle bar. I think the Trek Fuel EXe is the cleanest looking ebike with the small TQ motor, minimalist handlebar controller, embedded Display in the top tube. The Transition Relay hits many sweet spots also. Clean good looks, good travel and mid power Fazua Ride60 motor. Same with the Pivot Shuttle SL (maybe a little more travel). Right now I would rather sacrifice a some power, and battery size for a bike that looks cleaner. The mid power eMTB look like a better option? Not sure since I've only done short test rides so far. We need a e-MTB Outterbike to test ride some bikes in real world situations! I like the new Ibis logo but Ibis should bring back the metal headtube badge with new logo!
Mid power is mid power. It's quite a difference in power. So you are losing a lot of what makes an ebike worth buying. You can keep speed up on rooty and rocky flat trails and push through. You can do long steep technical climbs. Going from 85Nm to 65Nm is going to be a considerable difference in those circumstances. Although if you are just pedaling fireroads and ascending real DH trails then there is much less downside to a mid drive.
And I generally would advice against buying for looks because that's something that matters when you don't have the bike but once you've had it for some time it's just a tool and looks no longer matter. It's already problematic trying to find a bike with the right spec in ebikes.
And sacrificing battery size is also a big nono because you ride a lot longer on ebikes and compromising on battery size again takes away from what ebike does. 750Wh battery on Bosch motor allows for 50km on the highest setting. For a full power I would not go for a battery smaller than 750wh and Shimano is the worst motor so definitely not that.

A twist or thumb throttle would solve the crank bashing issues in rocky terrain. I just don’t get why Bosch would offer that option.
I totally understand this drive for this bike. But the cockpit user interface just seems so god damn busy....just when the biking industry is going wireless....you know...to e-liminate clutter.... lol
Looks like a Marin bike…I forgot the name, but that swing arm design was on that bike a few years ago…update…The name of the bike was the Marin Wolf Ridge…

That much added travel may be needed when it weighs 53 pounds. But not at 40 pounds, like the lightweight ones. Those ride much better IMO.

I love all the thoughtfulness in the mechanical design on this bike, but that swingarm is just too old school for me. Not that it matters, I'm not in the higher end Eebs market.

I'm betting shop owners hate that polarizing swingarm. It's so Love/Hate that you just know half the Eeb buyers coming through the door are decidedly Not going to buy this bike. I really wish it looked as good as it works.

Salient point made near the end: Ibis needs a 190/170 dual-crown build on offer ASAP. I'll be the first to buy. This bike is far too capable for 155mm travel.

He said IBIS is not selling battery on its own. They are only selling the IBIS frame mounting kits for the standard Bosch battery. The Bosch battery available thru other retailers.
The bike does come with a battery, but if you wanted a second battery you would have to purchase it from Bosch
It's a love child of Mountain Cycle Shockwave, Marin Wolfridge and a battery pack. Not really a fan of the looks. Like the ripmo and Ripley look, hate the mojo look. Bet it rides good but there are many ebikes that ride good and look way way better.
Not always designing something different, that no one saw before is good.
The lights are an awesome idea though.
The look is pretty polarizing from my experience talking with coworkers. I personally like it, which I attribute to always thinking the Shockwave was the coolest thing ever when I was a kid.
I agree about the lights. If you're gonna be lugging around a massive battery, why would you not integrate them.

I like the look but funny you mention not liking the Ibis Mojo look as I have a Mojo HD4 that I ultimately got over a similar bike because I loved the unique look. I do like how the Ripley looks but the blue and orange Ripmo isn’t my favorite just for color ways
I've been seeing alot of these full suspension bikes with the cranks pushed back looks like it would be rough on your knees.
I'll still only buy a specalized ebike.

We don't want additional weight, we don't want hard to throw around bike... we want as low weight bike with support and that's what every company wants. Call them fake is just ignorant and not helping Ibis promoting their bike. -1 point on my side... and then 11:02 "our goal is to make it disappear" dude you're contradicting yourself... pathetic.
As for the interviewer props to him for having a honest opinion.
Bosch is ripping you off SO hard on their motor / battery combos... their margins are insane. Those parts don't cost NEARLY that much. A THOUSAND bucks for a 750kwh battery? You could get an entire decent laptop with a 100 (99.9) kwh battery in it, and how much of that cost do you think is the lipo? Very little. The motors are not expensive either. I would love to buy an eBike but the cost is still absolutely absurd... although, regular mountain bikes are absurdly priced these days too. When the cost difference between an equivalent ebike and mtb is >500, with at least this level of battery and performance (preferably more... give me a denser 1000 kwh battery and 500w motor) then it will be a reasonable choice with a rational price. I don't blame this high end manufacturer, their stuff is already expensive, it is what it is... but the mainstream companies still have to charge a ridiculous price for the bosch kit. It's not worth over one thousand dollars for that battery and motor, period... it's just not.
I thought the same thing. I have a cheap ebike that uses a Samsung/LG 906wh battery that is $600, still overpriced IMO.

The whole "supply chain issues" excuse is getting old. The fact that you cannot go full 29 on a medium is such a massive oversight, especially when they're making their own wheels. Ibis really flexing their unashamed unapologetic mantra on this bike, but it's nowhere near as on the mark as any of their other models. Kind of feels like because they started production early, and now they're realizing they're behind the curve on lighter weight e bikes, they're just staying the course and trying to convince people that outdated is better. Batteries will get lighter. Frame design will continue to improve. They'll still be trying to convince the world that this is still the future.

Surprised that Ibis went with a full-chooch ebike and fully embracing the ebike mantra. I was hoping they'd go the "lightweight" / mid-power route. I never gave e-bikes a thought until I started seeing these lower-powered versions that seem to me like you're not cheating as much :)
I built up a 2021 Levo SL with a Zeb 170 fork and a DHX2 with a 55mm stroke for 159mm rear travel. Other than my previous SB130LR, its the sweetest riding bike I've ever been on. Eats up moab trails every day, no problems at all. Also, all ebikes should come with shimano 12sp for the shifting under load feature. With cush core and pedals the bike is 37lbs.
E bikes should never have derailleur's. They should have gear boxes. I speak from a ton of experience. That said Sata Cruz makes some amazing stuff. thats the one thing i would change.
Big meh for me, but it looks interesting. The weight for full fat ebikes is just too high it is NOT about esthetics as Jacques mentioned. They feel more like motos. Orbea Rise Trek Fuel EXE and Forestal are doing it right in that regard. Also I would say the more travel the better because the penalty for an ebike is almost nonexistent. Also the dropper sizes should all go up to the next size. Medium should be 180, 150 is just not enough drop on a medium frame. The cable routing is also kinda clever inside the frame but atrocious at the front.
The problem with factory dropper lengths is that they need to pick one length that will fit everyone in the height range for that size bike. That isn’t going to optimize dropper travel.
People like the lightweight emtbs because they dont feel like tanks in the air . Such a bs argument. Its has something to do with riding style . I dont need big motors. The orbea rise is for me a fun training tool for the easy training day. I use my normal bike for interval training and to hit my peak.
I'm fascinated by bike designs, but it's sad how other companies can so easily copy the work from others, specifically when it took so long to do it. Anyway, something to keep it mind as well is that people shouldn't wear cpsc helmets for ebikes, they should wear nta helmets like xnito or bern hudson. cpsc helmets are only good up to 15 mph
The forced mullet for sm/MD frames is a solid miss for me; they've done this crap for years though (i'm a huge Ibis fan, 5 bikes from them between my wife and I over the years) like putting a light tune shock on all size medium frames was a poor choice as well because anybody who fits a size M frame weighs less than 165#....

When talking about design and then show me an ugly handle bar layout, sorry, but that discredits everything else said about the design principle for this machine.
Get a room boys... That was painful. Apparently you've never ridden a Levo SL or any other (according to yourself) eMTB. These 50lb bikes will eventually go away, being super heavy isn't that much fun - personally I like a bicycle that feels like a bicycle.

I think it only bothers certain people - I appreciate you recognising this. It would’ve been fair play if you’d just gone with “you can’t please everyone all the time” :D
Longest dropper post size for a medium is 160mm.. wtf ?…That’s horrible.
That is the size they have spec'd on the medium because its the size that will work for the widest range of riders on the medium frame. It doesn't mean you can't put a longer one in there if your do require a longer one! Just the stock spec.

@Dan P I dare say your opinion will change over time. Too many professional riders and weekend riders understand that if you love mountain biking ebikes give you more miles on the trails in the same time. Rather than crawling up tedious climbs you options to save time and also ride up climbs that can't be ridden on non ebikes. If your a xc rider/racer than stick to your analogue 100mm travel bike. U.S riders need to get over the ebike phobia
