As well as his passion, there was the fact that he had 30,000 Welsh fans singing his song with him - From North and South, Rich and Poor, Young and Old - all singing in Welsh despite the concerted efforts to kill our language. • @boilingwateronthestove
      @boilingwateronthestove 2 роки тому +62

@@samswann5420 That is how it should be, but the problem is that England has never been proud or respectful of the regional languages of the UK for hundreds of years. It's only in recent years that this started to change. But hate towards Welsh people and viewing Welsh as a farmers language with no worth is still common as I have personally experienced way too many times. Don't forget. Welsh was forbidden by English law (because Wales was officially part of England for hundreds of years). Welsh people weren't allowed to speak Welsh in public life or in government jobs. The English government and even the UK government up to the 1950's forbid schools to teach in Welsh. All schools were in English and kids who spoke Welsh with eachother got their fingers spanked by the teachers with wooden sticks and had to wear a silly hat with the goal to break the moral of the kid and force him or her to prefer to speak English instead of Welsh. There is a reason why Welsh is only spoken by 27% of the Welsh population. 200 years ago it was still 70%. The government discriminated Welsh speakers to the point that they felt ashamed by the language and decided to raise their children in English as a way to make sure their children avoid the discrimination they had to go through. And honestly, Welsh only got full equality with English 10 years ago.

    • @samswann5420
      @samswann5420 2 роки тому +32

@@boilingwateronthestove the average English person isn’t aware of this and would find it it hard to believe. I’m 34 and was only ever taught about WW2, the Romans and the tudors at school so it’s hard to grasp the bigger picture surrounding Welsh identity/ pride. Unfortunately we are not taught about the wrong parts of our history. Devon had a language similar to Welsh that was lost centuries ago - Cornwall has kept theirs. The England you speak of (London / South East) have looked down upon the north of England and the south west too - obviously not to the extent of the horrible acts you speak of or similar to what happened in the highlands.

@@boilingwateronthestove I think we need to get away from thinking that anything like a majority of English people are anti-Wales. There's always a very vocal minority, but I doubt most English people think negatively about the Welsh. Just like we don't (or shouldn't) blame the Russian people for Putin invading Ukraine, we shouldn't blame the English people for the actions of their government. From a singing perspective, it goes back centuries to the church stopping singing unless it was a hymn in a church. I have two very close Welsh friends who knows I hate england and want to be Welsh but they will always call me english and never consider me welsh because I was born in England. I have another Welsh friend who is very quickly becoming my best friend he is the only one showing me support. He told me "shrugs does it matter what other people consider you as? At the end of the day you're making more effort to learn about Welsh culture/history/language than most Welsh people. Just consider yourself Welsh and let other people consider you British". This Song make all my hairs stick up all over my body, This Song make me tear up, and This Song makes me feel pride. This song is the soul inspiration why I want to become Welsh and will not stop until I am Welsh. I am a 26 year old autistic man and I apologise if I sound childish. Dafydd's reaction to the crowd singing "A bydd yr iaith Gymraeg yn fyw!" made me burst into tears.
That line used to fill me with hope, but now that Cymraeg is the fastest growing language throughout the UK, let alone Wales, it just fills me with a joy that I could never have imagined feeling in my wildest imagination.
The line translated into English means "And the Welsh language [at the end of time] is still alive"

    • @danwilliams7423

Does "bydd" not make it more like "And the Welsh language will live on"?

    • @DderwenWyllt
      @DderwenWyllt 2 роки тому +3

@@danwilliams7423 You're entirely correct, I just amalgamated 2 lines into one to convey the meaning of both.
      "Byddwn yma hyd ddiwedd amser"
"We'll be here until the end of time"
"A bydd yr iaith Gymraeg yn fyw!"
"And the Welsh language will live on"

Yma o Hyd - Still Here
    You don't remember Macsen, (1)
    nobody knows him.
One thousand and six hundred years,
a time too long to remember.
When Magnus Maximus (2) left Wales,
    in the year 383,
    leaving us a whole nation,
and today - look at us!
    (The Chorus)
    "We are still here,
    we are still here,
    despite everyone and everything,
    despite everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
    We are still here,
    we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
    We are still here."
Let the wind blow from the East, (3).
let the storm roar from the sea,
let the lightning split the heavens,
    and the thunder shout "encore!"
Let the tears of the faint-hearted flow,
and the servile licks the floor.
    Despite the darkness around us,
we are ready for the breaking of the dawn!
    (Chorus)
We remember that Macsen, the Emperor
left our country in one whole piece.
And we shall shout before the nations,
"We'll be here until Judgement Day!"
Despite every Dic Siôn Dafydd, (4)
despite old Maggie (5) and her crew,
we'll be here until the end of time,
and the Welsh language will be alive!
    (Chorus)
    We are still here,
    we are still here,
    despite everyone and everything,
    despite everyone and everything,
    despite everyone and everything.
    We are still here,
    we are still here,
    despite everyone and everything,
    despite everyone and everything...

It runs deep and it is ancient. Older even than the language, even deeper than the magic of Myrddin, old and deep as the ancient woods and rocks and streams. We have survived invasions and ethnic cleansing, our lands and our resources have been plundered and stolen, our labour exploited, our culture suppressed- but still we hold our heads high. Wales, our small land, is a beautiful land, and great in its variety: the mountains, the hills, the lakes, the meadows, the rivers, the sea. It is our song and the music that flows within us. It is our heritage, our jewel, our beating heart. It is our hwyl, our hiraeth, our croeso, our cariad. We feel it, we love it, we live it, we are it. Our Cymru, Our Wales.

My ancestors were Welsh speakers, but moved from Swansea to England in the late 19th/early 20th century where their family's connection to the language, I assume, gradually died. It feels like a great loss to lose a language that could have been passed down, and when I listen to this I feel sad that it never happened and we were left with only English. Very powerful, and a testament to a colonised nation's strength against its oppressors.

And of course, our lads done us proud, being Welsh is bloody great mun!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Lucky b*****d. Just back from watching a friendly at the soulless corporate monstrosity Ireland uses as a home stadium. We used to be like the Welsh. Then we sold our souls for a handful of dollars and euros. Plaid Cymru!

Well, there are theories. With some decent evidence to back it up that suggests that the English were originally in fact as Brythonic as the Welsh, and the only difference came about thanks to people in Wales not adopting Anglo Culture, but those in England doing so.

@@xanadu8468 i believe this too. Many Western Place names in England with Welsh and English in the name suggests some sort of closer origin of both than Many like to admit. Wether thats marriages between Royalty in the so called dark ages, or something even deeper. It may in fact come from the Cimbri tribe of Jutland whos leader supposedly had names similar to the Britons of Wales. Are the Anglos themselves really Germanic? I don't belive they were. The Saxon may have been, but not the Anglos.

I've watched this a hundred times in the last year, at least. In the bathroom, in tears, in the pub, just walking around town. 日本語でも勉強しているんときには、フランス語や色々な”インターナショナル”の外国語に: just hearing Daffyd Iwan again brings me to tears. I may never have a "real" Blue Wall passport ever again (my work permit in the UK expired before Brexit), but I still dream of being able to cry into a Welsh flag again, and perhaps one day it'll even have his name on it in ink that will not go stale. FA Cups are FA Cups, but the dream of living to see your druid or bard again: even though I've only been to Oesterich once, it brings this "simple" English student to tears.
