As a 60 yr old Englishman, and no disrespect to my generation in the crowd, but it was the 'youngsters' who knew the WHOLE song.
The Welsh language lives on in you. The Welsh; the FIRST true Britons.
Because when the older generation were in school it was banned in a lot of schools. Two welsh mps took it to the European Supreme Court and won.

Dafydd Iwan has single handily written a page for himself in Welsh folklore with this epic song, how on earth can any Welsh sportsman or woman not feel utterly inspired after hearing this. When he shed a tear he must’ve thought “I can go knowing the next generation will be speaking the language of their forefathers” & his song will live on long after Dafydd Iwan is gone.
Brilliant comment
Not bad seeing as they banged him up for his nationalism hey 😁 now he got the whole of Wales and far beyond singing this ha ha magic

Oh the Welsh love a song - you would love the a day of Rugby at Cardiff! As an Englishman it’s my duty to learn the Welsh anthem as well... after all they are the fathers of these lands!
Thanks, that was our intention...kinda
I thought that was sweat running down Dafydd's face then realised it was tears; tears of pride. And he had every right. There is nothing better in sport than hearing a Welsh crowd singing.
Same here. I had tears in my eyes until I realised those were tears running down his cheeks and then mine followed suite.
The years are from the sacrifices he has made, the struggles to preserve the Welsh language being Arrested for his his right and our right to keep our language and the English government off our land
These are tears of joy. As a Pole I can imagine the feeling, even if the threats to the survival of my nation and my language ended before I was born.
When he wrote this song the language was dying, it was being repressed by the English, now, in his later years the language is rising again and his song is being sung, in perfect Welsh, by thousands at once.
Damn I'd cry too.
He fought all his life to preserve the welsh language and he wrote this song himself to say we will always be here and the language!! That s why he sings it with such passion. The culmination of his dedication To his country and it’s language.
2:55 - is for me the most moving part.
This song states how the Welsh people will "be here till Judgment Day", and that particular verse talks how the "the Welsh language will be alive".
It's very moving to see Dafydd Iwan stopping singing to hear the entire stadium singing in Welsh, confirming the lyrics.

The video today was so emotional, and I am so proud of my Welsh heritage.

I’m Irish and this legitimately made me tear up, amazing to see Celtic languages continue to grow after being made illegal for years.
I'm Welsh, and I'll try and explain why this is so special and why Dafydd Iwan is crying. If you watch the Copa90 video- The Welsh Football revolution, it explains more about the rise in national pride and football and the Welsh language, and why it's so surprising.
Two things caused the decline in the Welsh language- mass migration from England during the industrial revolution and a efforts by the government to stamp it out- which led to a like 'internalised hatred' from Welsh people towards their own language. And also laws that banned if from being spoken in workplace, court etc.
The language loss caused a split in Wales and Welsh was only really spoken in the North West and West coast. And it became synonymous with nationalism- which was really hated in Wales. The south was more unionist.
Dafydd Iwan is a Welsh nationalist folk singer, probably the most 'uncool' thing you could be in Wales.
In football, like the Copa90 video shows, the Welsh language was really looked down on in Cardiff and the south. Many people in the south hated North Wales Welsh speakers as much as the English.
When I was young, there was no pride in the language at all and was seen as backwards and embarrassing. People would have mocked you for liking Dafydd Iwan.
So to see football fans from across Wales (10-20 years ago would have had nothing in common, and maybe would have hated and fighting each other) sing a Welsh nationalist folk song, is nothing short of a miracle. And it's prompted Welsh people to want to learn Welsh so they can sing along in Welsh.
There is still a sort of trauma in Wales, particularly in the older generation from the Welsh language loss, and an internalised shame over speaking it. So to see the younger generation embrace their language is beautiful! I
And 'rugby Welshness' is still very unionist, with the Royals and all that. The nationalism that has spawned from football is new, organic and forward thinking.
This is why he's crying. To see Wales finally embrace the language, without any negative connotations or embarrassment. And it's united the north and south.
Hope that makes sense.

It was less than half a century ago when people were shamed for speaking welsh, seen as outcasts, and people before me had to fight the establishment for our own right to speak our own mother tongue. Since then Welsh was given official status, we have our own National Parliament: The Senedd, and Welsh is now seen as advantageous skill to in Wales.
When that stadium sang those lyrics with Dafydd, it gave me chills. Our language will endure and will survive until the end of time.
Always remember my Nan telling me that she got hit at school if she spoke Welsh there. They tried their hardest to wipe us out and failed
clyw clyw, 'achan.
@@helenbaker1630 we will always resist the attempts of those who want our language and culture to be dead. They see our refusal to comply as a threat to their union.
My Welsh mother told me about the 'Welsh Not' and punishment the children had to endure at school. I'm so glad that more Welsh people are learning their language. When we visited Wales I loved listening to it. Now you need to reclaim the words Cymru for your name and Cymri for your people and let the world (especially the English) know it. G'day from Australia.
@@ynyrglyn5037 Statistics show that despite census numbers showing more 'speakers' of Welsh, the Welsh speaking heartlands are still shrinking and becoming anglicised, partly due to inmigration of monolingual English speaking settlers, emigration from the areas, housing issues, etc.
Furthermore, studies show that the second language learners of Welsh, those from English speaking families sent to Welsh speaking schools, tend not to use Welsh as much after leaving school, socialise in English, have English speaking partners and raise their children as English speakers.
Stop patting yourselves on the back over meaningless census results and start doing something to protect the density of your native speaking population from anglicisation, or you'll end up like Ireland today (Ireland in 1919, like Wales in 1970, had 20% of it's population as native Irish speakers and attempted a school-based revival in the English speaking part. They ended up with zero new Irish speaking areas despite 55% of their schools having been Irish Medium in the 1940s and now less than 1% of their population are native Irish speakers).
Don't think that Welsh Medium schools can do all the work, they can't. You need your native speakers and the geographic Welsh speaking areas. Otherwise you'll end up with a pathetically English sounding Welsh creole, with English tongues butchering Welsh words and very little thought given to decent phonetic instruction in the rush to create more 'speakers'. In Ireland even most teachers don't know the languages phonetics. It's a shitshow.
Unbelievable. The Welsh language is so beautiful and never better when sung by a full stadium.
So many young people singing along in Welsh is beautiful.

@@christinequinn5355 Oh thanks! I know it's a bit of an essay, but I wanted to provide some context for the crying. I think a lot of us in Wales have been very surprised by the effect the Cymru football team has had on the Welsh psyche!
It's probably a sense of vindication too- he went to jail for his Welsh language protests. People like him were seen as 'crackpots' in the past. Now nationalism is taken a lot more seriously by the younger generation.
To see younger people embrace the song (he's in his 80s!) and sing in Welsh- many of them can't speak Welsh and singing phonetically, is probably something he never thought he would see.
I’m from Ghana and on hearing Michael Shane and then this make me part Welsh now. What a moment and spirit. Come in Wales 🏴. Yma o Hyd 🏴🏴🏴🏴
Always appreciated the Welsh, so, so passionate from an Englishman. Total respect given.
That dude on his phone just reading texts or that needs a good look at his life. I am Scottish and this is the most inspiring and uplifting thing I have seen in years. 🏴 🏴 FREEEEEEEEDOM will be sweet my friends.
That is a guy who misses out on life whilst looking a tiktok videos. An embarrassment on the day, how could you not want to experience something like this occasion live?
He was probably checking that his phone was filming o.k.
@@megw7312 oppppps wife alert.
he was probably ashamed he didnt know the words
actually if im not mistaken that guy on his phone organises a lot of the away trips for welsh supporters even in the dark days when only maybe a hundred would travel, so maybe he was texting family and friends what was happening at that moment.
Am an english man from Liverpool but I love YMA O HYD ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Oh my God what a song, What a country, What a people. I am Irish and I have goosebumps the emotion I have never seen anything like it God bless you Dafydd Wales forever
I'm heart sick about what is happening in Ukraine, but the Celts have always stuck together - good luck on Sunday 🏴🤝🏼🏴
I've taken up Welsh on Duolingo because of watching this performance ♥️🏴
Scandinavian here. I must say this gave me bumps all over. I really like the celtic culture, traditions and songs. Keep up the fight for welsh culture ❤
Just in case you were curious what he’s singing about. the chorus roughly translates to “regardless of anyone and everything, we’re here to stay” it’s when the English tried to stop the welsh language from being spoken.. “regardless of anyone and everything, we’re here to stay”
I'm a well hardened Englishman - but this honestly has to be one of the passionate songs i have EVER heard - Ive reposted it to as many outlets - got my nephews hooked - well done Wales .. for getting through and for having the passion that others can only dream of
Thank you... It's really heartwarming to see a positive comment from a 'Hardened Englishman'...
TBH I lived longer in England than in Wales, most of my life in the Netherlands, not a footy fan, rugby (sort of obviously), yet watching this reduces me to tears...
Seriously, more often than not we're accused of being sheep shagging xenophobes (Never I have I heard that from Dutch & other European PPL, those that have been in Wales almost always start with how friendly the locals are,,,)... If only more PPL were like you...
Diolch ar ffowr (thank you)

I second that motion as a Scot. I'd want to march in battle with my Welsh and Irish brothers, all bellowing out our beloved songs and hymns. I'd march to the gates of hell with this behind me.

As an Irishman with a Welsh wife and as someone who spent a number of happy years living in beautiful Wales, this song really gives me goosebumps. What a great anthem. I've watched this video dozens of times by now. I'm keen to make sure my kids grow up to be proud of their Welsh heritage even though we now live in Ireland 🇮🇪 🏴
Teach them the Welsh Language by 2050 the language will be strong and huge advantage of an Independent Wales
Left and right, both sides of the Sea are Celtic!
"Welsh is of the soil, this island, the senior language of the men of Britain; and Welsh is beautiful." -- J. R. R. Tolkien

It's the mother language. None of us are related to ancient Britains but our language is the oldest so we are the Britains

One of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard in my life. Cheers from Poland
Cheers mate. Dziekuje!💓
I'm from England and have never heard this before.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING to hear♥️♥️
And you are welcome to sing with us anytime! ❤️
It's to Wales what "Jerusalem" is to England - the alternative National Anthem. The chorus, translated: "We're still here, in spite of everyone and everything, we're still here."
I'd heard this before, but NEVER with such passion, esp amongst the youngsters.
If this doesn't make want to be Welsh nothing will!
@@sherilynhamilton-shaw8169 Thanks Sherilyn♥️♥️
I think I'd start crying as it's moved me to years just watching on UA-cam😁
@@JimFinnis Jerusalem should be the English national anthem.
Beautiful. Passionate. Love from the US.
I'm Scottish and this gives me goosebumps.
The emotion in that guys face says it all and its not hard to see why, seeing the father and son in the crowd especially did it for me and the older lady at the end. As a history buff these words cut really deep. The Welsh are truly Dragonborn
Massive respect from an irish fan, fucking delighted you finally qualified and laid to rest those ghosts of the past.cymru am byth
I think i finally understand what it means to be Welsh.........
I’m Scottish and that is one the most powerful, rousing songs I’ve ever heard !!! Made for a stadium, should be the Welsh National anthem in my opinion !!! ❤️🙌🏼🙌🏼👌🏼
I have no idea what he's singing, but it made me cry.

Respect from Hamburg,Germany!
Superb from the welsh supporters 🏴🤝🏴

Seeing the tears on Dafydd brought me to tears. I moved to Wales when I was 9 and see myself welsh I speak Welsh and both my son's first language is Welsh. I love Wales it's my country and home❤️
You're not Welsh then and neither are your children.
I'm English bros but I'll sing this like I'm welsh fucking love this so much z
It wrecks me I never took the Welsh language seriously in school, I went to an English comprehensive like many of my 90s kid, it's like I've lost a part of my heritage and I just can't seem to wrap my head around it anymore. I'm glad for the people who fought so hard to keep it alive.
I was in school in the late 70's , Early 80's , Welsh wasn't taught at all , French , German and Latin was .... I didn't really know what the Welsh language meant , Born and brought up in Cardiff I never heard Welsh at all , I've made it my passion to learnt Welsh , It's not easy with dyslexia , Thankfully Auto correction helps out in posts like this , So don't give up , We are all Welsh together in our Hearts 🏴
as an Irishman this would be Incredible at the World Cup in Quatar .Go on Wales
I think it's just become our World Cup song. No vote or anything. It seems to have organically emerged as our song based on its obvious merits. See if you can find a version with the lyrics though Denis: sheer dynamite. The English won't like it one bit.
@@meirionowen5979 But they wont play it in the world cup right? Disappointing.
The fans may sing it, but Dafydd Iwan needs to perform in every game!
How can you not love wales. Beautiful 🏴
It's beautiful to see a language threatened to extinction being revived and use this way by such an amazing Celtic country. As a half-basque (and proud Spaniard) myself, I hope this regional languages with such a long history survive, and I hope to do my part by learning my own regional language one day.
Congratulations, Wales!
Went to Bilbao to watch a Welsh national team managed by the legendary John Toshack. The welcome we had from the Basques was in credible... CCFC & Athletic Club
Please call the country by its proper name: Cymru. ‘Wales’ is an occupation Saxon English word meaning ‘Foreigner.’ The Cymry were and are the native population of the island of Britain and are the true Britons.
