    Obviously BMW would prefer to sell the big flagship. This looks like a fun event, but the 650 or 800 is much more suited.

    A set of full on Dunlop knobbies would been worth their weight in platinum on those sandy days. Enduro tires are just horrible off road.
    The older Dakar bike is AWESOME!!! All of these bikes are awesome! I want to do one of these so bad! I don’t think they would treat me as nicely on my KTM. lol

    That looks like a blast of a time. I would like to know which bike faired better, the 800 or 1200? It looked like the 800 on the climbs and sand would have done better?

      Problem comes when using legs for wrestling the beast to restore order. It doesn't matter then how "balanced" a bike is then.

    Why would they have to do an oil change on this kind of event and these sort of bikes? I thought only highly stressed engines with low oil capacity meant short service intervals

    • @fsau7764
      @fsau7764  6 років тому

      fraser nicol it was 42 degrees heat which destroys the oil plus some people had to travel 3-4 thousand km to the event itself

      @fraser63966 6 років тому +1

      Never knew that. I used 10/40 grade when everyone else was on 20/50 plus changing at 4000 miles. Rode from Scotland to southern Spain encountering temps of 40c between Madrid and Granada and below 0c crossing the Pyrenees. On a previous trip after going to France Italy and Switzerland I met a couple at Le Havre on a Triumph T160 Trident He was on his second gallon of oil after doing half my mileage

    • @efrey614
      @efrey614 5 років тому

      @@dragonknightadam You are right you can turn any of these more dirt worthy true dual sport machines into serious long haul adventure machines. I ran my little crf250l 800 miles in one day without issue then two days latter 800 miles back home. I am more comfortable on my crf250l with a seat concepts seat a large gas tank, and my bar and risers than I have ever been on my Harley Davidson dyna wide glide that I have taken around the entire USA on trips of 15,000 miles, so I know I can do the same on my crf250l as I am much more comfortable in this seating position, and with a seat concepts seat my butt is comfy as well. Add on the saddle bags the number plate bag and tank bag along with what ever bag I choose to carry on the rear rack I have plenty of space to take whatever I need on as long a trip as I would like. I can do all that and pick my bike up all day long if I needed to. I made my plated wr250f somewhat comfortable as well, but it is my off road machine and is still geared to low for serious road stints. The stock seat on that bike was a joke though and if you chose to sit for a half hour while on the road your butt would go numb that fast. The DR and DRZ are great bikes that are capable of any adventure, and still light enough for serious off road riding. I commute on my little modified crf250l an hour down the interstate daily at 75 mph but would be nice with a bit more power to get out of the way if needed at these speeds.

    Man, these bikes are so heavy, they look like rugged offroad bikes, but they are pigs, expensive and complex for this kind of riding. The old GS airheads had the right idea.. they are sport touring bikes bith knobbies, farthest thing from an enduro

      JEB by the end of Long Way Around their bikes were pretty much junk. Not that the trip wasn't intense, but the subframe on all 3 failed in more or less the same place. I also wonder how well those engines handled the questionable fuel they had to use.
