CHEVY SILVERADO MISFIRE INTERMITTENT COMPRESSION

  • In today's video we take a look at a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a V8 5.3l engine. The customers complaint is that there is a misfire on cylinder number 8. The repair shop replaced spark plugs, wires and even swapped ignition coils and injectors, but the misfire continued on cylinder number 8. Convinced that the engine had a mechanical problem they asked me to take a look. What I found was something very interesting. Cylinder number 8 at times had good compression and at times had low compression. Could it be a bad lifter, camshaft, valve spring or a valve seat?

    great video on diagnosing this issue i totally agree with it . I would be 100% positive that it is a valve seating issue, with a small bore camera you would be able to see inside the cylinder without having to take it apart. just a tip . Good job.

    This is where an in cylinder pressure test would help. The waveform could likely reveal where the issue is without removing the cylinder head.

    • @scientist100
      @scientist100 Рік тому +9

      Easier would be to just use differential pulse sensors at intake and exhaust and watch the waveform; will tell you exactly which one is misbehaving; clearly a valve not seating right; worn rings are usually very consistent.

    • @edwinlomonaco6754
      @edwinlomonaco6754 Рік тому

      @scientist100 Agreed. Totally forgot about that one as I was watching. So for sure. Pulse sensors in intake and exhaust would probably be easier. The trick is always in waveform interpretation. But a dead hole should be real obvious. In a case where a cylinder is not being identified through a DTC. How would you know which one it is? I'm assuming the trigger being used would be an ignition trigger. But from my understanding that trigger will not align with either the intake pull nor either exhaust pulse. Would you be looking at the intake pull right before the trigger?

    • @scientist100
      @scientist100 Рік тому +2

      @@edwinlomonaco6754 yes; it is important to use the TDC overlay and specify your trigger and firing order but here we already know that it is 8 and whichever looks abnormal would automatically tell us which one is failing. Cylinder identification whether intake or exhaust for a certain cylinder is necessary. Tapping into the exhaust side; you will confirm if it's an exhaust valve but the intake waveform will show both usually as it will back feed pressure if it stays open during compression.

    • @DylanL69
      @DylanL69 Рік тому

      A leak down test would probably be a much easier way to tell

    • @scientist100
      @scientist100 Рік тому +1

      @@DylanL69 I don't know how much you know about oscilloscopes but you can clearly see that the valve sometimes seats correctly as it can get good compression at times and you know what that means... You will get lucky if you get it when it is not fully seating to do a leak down test. Unfortunately; a leak down test may not prove anything. Pulse sensors just needs an intake access; usually a PCV hose and that's all.

    I think I heard the unevenness when it was cranking,If I'm not mistaken. And all this time I thought that relative compression meant that compression is relative to the spark. No one ever explained before that it is relative to each cylinder. Thank you for saying that little piece buddy!!!!!

    Just had the same issue on a 6.0 Chevy truck. It had very bad intake vacuum leaks on cylinder 4 and 6 causing misfire and lean codes. But repairing it only lead to no more lean codes, but the misfire codes returned.
    Intermittent compression loss on cylinder 4 which reduced at higher engine speeds. Sometimes the valves stick in the guides, lifters and cams also fail, but this engine was very clean. Customer also declined further inspection. Hate not knowing the exact cause, but that's our world. :)

    I was thinking like you with the valve sealing problem. One more thing would be a weak valve spring or a sticking valve. GM had problems with valve guide problems in the past. I have seen a valve seat problem. It took many miles for the problem to occur, but at idle the engine would lope turning on the MIL light and yes, gauge compression and cylinder leak down was good compared to other cylinders. This was before scope testing. The engine was a 1997 Dodge 360 (5.9L) V8. Contacting Chrysler for information, they claimed it was a "metallurgy problem."
    The fix. Replace the cylinder heads. The reman heads had the latest and greatest in valve seats. Engine ran great after that.

I did use a mechanical gauge and did not hook up my scope to it. But now with your video I think I will grab my Autel and scope the cylinders, I'm certain I can do it. But not for free. So if my customer says he will pay for this test i'll post my findings here and I will post if he declines the diag. Great video!!!

    Thorough , logical diagnosis and great lesson . I believe they swapped coils and injectors to test instead of replacing ALL of them . Saves money there . If there is access , how about putting a small articulating bore scope in # 8 cylinder and possibly examine the valves and seats ? It may be faster than doing a leak down test on that cylinder . #xtoolgiveaway .

    some diag guys dont know this, some cars will shut off the fuel injector in a multiple missfire situation, bmw is one of them, i have seen guys call a bad injector because the ecu is not triggering the injector to stop cat damage and bore wash/engine damage, id say it is a typical valve not sealing issue.

    The 5.3L is known for AFM lifter issues but #8 is not an AFM lifter. However, they can stick and jam up internally which will cause a lifter tick. If they are not hearing a lifter tick, I doubt that's the issue. I'd be looking at a bent or sticking valve or a broken valve spring on #8.
    They might be able to detect a sticking valve by running or even just cranking the engine with the valve cover removed.

    PLEASE READ! I had the same issue on a 2011 5.3l it was on Cylinder 6. I recommended removal of the Valve Cover for inspection and stated it may be possible lifter. Customer took the truck, Apparently, our shop quote was too high if it needed all that. Customer took it to the shop next door. Their Diagnostic tech found a bent valve for that cylinder. So this is where it gets interesting.... They kept the truck for a whole month. And i was eager to know what was the issue. So turns out, they did the whole head job on both banks, replaced valves and still was misfiring for same cylinder after they had it all together. They did their checks and took it all apart again. It was a bad exhaust lifter for that cylinder and had rounded out the cam lobe. Made sense since sometimes it would seal and sometimes it would lose compression. Their Jr. Tech is friends with one of ours and he confirmed it. Dang.
