- In an effort to salvage a video I came out with this one. I have been messing with a screen recorder on my Autel 908 and it really messed up on the first vid to the point it just wasn't usable. Needless to say I drag you along for "Part 2" and try to salvage what I can. Oh well, some days you get the bear and some day the bear gets you. -Enjoy!

How do u find out a random misfire
These diagnostic videos are indispensable to those of us who count on them for a living. Got one on my four post right now that has a miss but only when under load and no codes.

Eric Every time ya work on a Chevy Truck I say "I didn't Build it, but I'm gonna fix it, because I bought it" I still love my Chevys.
After a week of scratching my brain out trying to figure out a rich running engine (that i still cant figure out)... A night off watching some SMA is all i needed!
No codes?
@Ryan Hogan Actually will read lean, it's an O2 sensor not a fuel sensor. A misfire dumps a whole cylinder of air into the exhaust, and that is full of oxygen.
Hi Eric, After the injector swap and you fired the engine and reviewed the scanner info, you mentioned the slightly negative fuel trim averages and theorized that vapor pulled into the pvc system from fuel contaminated oil was likely he reason. Brilliant. Information like that is another reason as to why I follow your channel. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your vast depth of knowledge. I began my learning 60 years ago in the pages of my beloved HotRod magazine. I still read it (Street Rodder et. al. have just been cancelled as a print media, sadly) and for some years now UA-cam has been a huge contributor to my continued attempt to learn. You’re the best, Eric. Thanks, and best wishes to you and your family. Semper Fidelis Dave Heitman in Omaha
I am glad I am retired from busting knuckles as an Master Tech at Toyota for 36 years, we did not have all the fancy tools to diagnose as they are today. I love seeing the new tech world of tools to make jobs more easy and making sure things are fixed.Keep up the great work, with the videos As the old saying once a grease monkey always a grease monkey.
I tuned in to watch another excellent diag vid but instead I learned a new mechain term: the bigger the glob, the better the job! LOL! Kudos, Dr. O!

Hey SMA, I'm glad you didn't let the setback of the video error stop you. Fixing a vehicle problem can be maddening by itself. Not many can fix, video, edit, and entertain. Keep 'em coming SMA.
Watching you makes me want to go clean my engines, my vehicles have never been this dirty
I recently had a sudden dead cylinder misfire issue with my '06 G6 V6. Got a P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire) along with the flashing CEL and lean codes. Went through troubleshooting steps: swapped plugs and wires between cylinders, checked spark with inline tester, checked compression on that cylinder (was 190-200PSI). Was looking like a fuel delivery issue. Tested the injector coil resistance and it was good. Checked as much wiring as I could and nothing seemed amiss. Checked the signal from the ECM to the injector and it looked good. All evidence was pointing to a clogged or stuck closed injector.
I replaced the faulty injector (new bottom o-rings for all the others too) along with plugs and wires for good measure. Was a bit of a job due to having to remove the top intake plenum and everything in the way. Got it all buttoned back up and that fixed it :)
So you realize not only is that a Chevy but the devils Chevy 666
That's always the best feeling. You saved a bunch of money and did it yourself. Now days, most people cannot or will not. A job well done is the greatest feeling!

I especially love your explaing the diagnosing that brings you to the fix... Proof positive that an old mechanic can learn new things. You are right if You can do it, I can too, I just LOVE that. Best teacher I ever had , and replacing my DAD is a feat I thought no-one would ever do. So sorry for your loss. Keep the vids coming Ive got a lot to LEARN.... MB in Ut.
Gotta like the way the scope recorded the results, at about 6:21, and it was helpful to see how you had the pressure sensor attached later. Of course the slight variance in the pause between each test doesn't make any difference, since the duration of each 'on' time was identical. Cool to see the test automatically boosted rail pressure to exact baseline before each cylinder test. Excellent point about how excessive fuel in one cylinder causes lean misfires on the rest of the bank. It is so nice to see another SMA video!
Great video, Eric! This is hands down my favorite way of diagnosing injector flow!
I mentioned it was because of you.. this is my new preferred method. So much more accurate PLUS.... it's nice to have them all captured on the screen. Use cursors to compare, etc. Thanks Pj!
Voltage Drop Diagnostics I knew u would notice the wps test for fuel pressure.
Bill Rimmer behind the scenes, Eric showed us youtubers the results of his test and I had a corolla that I was doing the same test on at the same time haha!
Unfortunately I didn’t get to film mine. But it’s certainly one of my favorite tests for fuel injectors.
Thank you for all the videos. My wife and I took a trip to Corning this fall and I had to stop by and get a photo of myself in your shop driveway. It was a Saturday or I would have said hello.
Jesse Burns , did they same thing this last summer. Was in Corning for a wedding and stopped by SMA on a Saturday for a photo opp in the driveway. I even saw Vinney heading down the road to dollar general.
@@Mark-vc7rm My wife still does not understand why I needed to stop by. That was a highlight of my trip And Corning Glass was OK as well.
It looked like who ever was messing with the injectors was so close to figuring it out. I’m guessing they didn’t have a scanner to to watch the cylinder misfire move cylinders when they swapped the injectors.
Did the same thing but I met Eric and his daughter. My GF was a bit perplexed but thought it was great afterwards.

"You're meddling in things that ought not to be meddled in. It's dangerous." Oh, how I can use this at work. Happy New Year! Thanks for your videos.
Thanks Eric a day late , just replaced seals and O-rings on my injectors on a 1990 Nissan GT-R didn’t lube the O-rings, dang!!! Seamed to go in fine though? Read the manual but it’s 25 years old and the part telling me to oil the O-rings was later found elsewhere.
Watching your videos have given me the confidence to overhaul most of the external bits myself because nobody wants to touch the car or even price work.
When you mentioned "oil" to lube the "O" rings, I assume you didn't really mean engine oil. But just for the record, never use engine oil ( or petroleum based greases) to lube "O" rings. These will destroy the "O" rings. Only use silicone based lubes. As Eric mentioned, dielectric grease or brake grease are good. I buy "O" ring grease at my local swimming pool dealer and use it for this purpose.
David Quinn thanks, no I didn’t use motor oil, although I’m no mechanic by any means, I am learning.
Took the engine out, the easy part😉 cleaned everything and now working on putting it back together, had turbos rebuilt, have done new seals, gaskets, oil and water pumps, timing belt and tensioner, rear main seal, flywheel and clutch, sensors, vacuum and coolant lines, fuel lines, full ignition system, MAF, and waiting for new engine wiring harness. Much of this thanks to ERIC, if I can , you can too!
For a small job those little packets of “bulb lube” are perfect for that sort of thing.
@@davidquinn6161 isn't gasoline petroleum? So how would engine oil destroy an o ring that is in contact with gasoline?
@@jakesellers9447 No idea why gas isn't a problem. Just know that Eric O. and several other of the mechanics whose channels I watch, have all said the same thing. Good question. Maybe someone else has an answer.
I wish we had a guy like you in our area. I love watching your videos. It's awesome how you do not give up on something until you figure out the issue. My 2003 silverado ss 6.0 LQ9 has similar issue. Spits and sputters. Drives ok for a minute and backfires and pops the next. Had a few local guys try to diagnose the issue and it still hasn't been diagnosed. Has random misfire code. Has codes for running rich and codes for running lean. Just frustrating to keep spending money for people to not figure out this issue. And I have a beautiful truck sitting in the garage that I can't even drive. Once again. Awesome job the people in your area hopefully realize how nice it is to have you for such issue. Stay healthy and stay positive
Interesting that you should post this. I just had an 06 2500 w a 5.3 that had been to 3 shops for a rich code that they couldn't figure out. They replaced o2s, pump, MAF, and oddly enough, intake o rings. Shop before them did coils on bank 2 and full ignition tune up. The 3rd was talking about a new ecm. When I got it, every cyl. on bank 2 showed misfires in history, but only 8 was current. I used my old school Snapper fuel pressure gauge with the scan tool hooked up and ran the balance test. #8 showed a 12 psi difference as opposed to the rest. Honestly, I'd not seen this style injector fail like this before, so your vid is definitely worth watching!
These small laptops and handheld computers are amazing..i remember as a kid, walking into a garage and seeing a big metal box in the bay with wire and probes, a tv monitor, i guess, an oscilloscope.

Jay Faulk I’m from Canada Ontario too and I love his videos and the content to that he provides to help people and technicians..Eric is very advanced in automotive field..
I can't help but appreciate how thorough your are, personally I would just watch fuel trim corrections. If ltft drops to + or - 5% I would ship it. Also change the oil if it smells "gassy" from the #6 overfueling...
I had a couple tools shipped from harbor freight, for Marie, to help her out with her newly chosen career path. I just wanted to make sure they arrived.
Yes they did and she was grateful!
Is she going to be a service tech? I missed it.
'that happens when someone's been pulling it in and out, not lubing it up, nicking the end off the rubber' 🤣😂 that sir is how you become parents....
So crazy other mechanics don’t use the tools you do to diagnose issues, I took one automotive class in college and learned how to diagnose issues like this with an o scope.
My open lab teacher also told me to “not dry hump my injectors”. People who don’t know how to diagnose things end up throwing parts at it, “why don’t you change them all” ? Sometimes it’s not worth it sometimes it is, sometimes - if ain’t broke don’t fix it!
Anyways love your vids always reminds me of the valuable stuff I learned from my teachers and myself from working on my own cars!
Just goes to show how accurate that balance test is. PCM was pulling back 21% on the bank 2 fuel. The #6 injector flowed 6 p.s.i. more than the others which is 20% of 30. Excellent diag Dr. O.
Great video Eric. I solved my OSHA approved bucket issue by taking 36 inches of 3/8 rubber fuel line hose, splitting one wall lengthwise and securing it to the rim with goop. Wait 24 hours and then no more slipping. Plan B is to purchase a work platform (about 12 x 30 inches) with rubber tipped legs made by Werner (not a sponser). These are available at Lowes or Home Depot and often on sale 3-4 times during the year.
Absolutely brilliant explanation, I am glad you give us a view in your diagnostic process and provide us logical, easily understandable information. You really make us feel it is so easy to diagnose those problems, greetings from Romania, I am definitely your fan! Keep up the great work 👍

Great info Eric. Always love learning from you. Especially when it comes to using the pico!
I glad I stumbled on this channel, I just bought a 2002 Escalade and the videos you've made on these trucks have been incredibly useful.
Just something I noticed, each sides fuel pressure drop was even on bank 1 and bank 2. All the even side pressure lined up to each other and all the odds lined up to each other... just a random observation. Keep up the great videos man.
Every now and then my money light comes on, i then check the codes and its 304 again, i then replace fuel injector and all other necessary things pertaining to it. I clear the codes run it for a week then the money light comes back on with the same old 304 on the number 4 cylinder on the v six 2006 jeep liberty. I am now considering the lifter to possible be bad causing a slow release of exhaust or not closing all the way in turn making it idle just a little ruff on that cylinder. some times the money light will go off for a week or two and then randomly come back on with the code of 304 on #4. Your videos help a lot in understanding the operations of things so thank you for taking the time for us to learn !
Eric, you helped me better understand just how the fuel system works. Thanks for all the videos, they are very helpful.
Is it bad that I wish I lived near Eric, not only because his area looks to be a lovely part of the world to live, but also so he could be my car guy? I haven't had a good local car guy in a lot of years now - the world needs more Erics!
The speed of that Pico injector test is awesome! I have done the injector test manually a few times with the OTC controller and a pressure gauge. Each time I had to do the entire test twice, on eight cylinders, to confirm my numbers and even then I was not 100% sure it was right.
Back in the late 80’s when I went to GM in-service classes at the Moorestown Nj training center, there would often times be engineers there and they told us before long (they made it seem like 4-5 years away lol) there would be sequentially fired injectors and the computer would control the mixture of each individual cylinder using an O2 sensor for every cylinder. Still haven’t quite got there yet.
I'm having the same issue and you explained everything. They wanted to charge 900.00 just to diagnose the issue. smh. Great job!

Thanks for another good video Eric. I have worked on many 5.3s Seems to be one of the easiest engines to work on for me. Never forget I was trying to figure out why I had a misfire on number 2 cylinder on a 2007. All the usual suspects checked out. Did a compression test and found 2 was low. No leakage, just low. Took the head off and found the piston wasn't traveling to the top of the deck. Turned out to be a bent rod. How the hell does that happen? Fun stuff....
The funny thing is that the lesser mechanics and new people can fix simple things on the first go around. God Bless.
So many fantastic innuendos in this video... Love the content brother! All love from Texas.
Eric, that injector clip is strictly for factory assembly. The injectors and rail are installed as a unit during engine assembly. After that, its useless except to blow hole in your shoes when you throw it on the floor. Cheers!

Happy new year Eric, love from western illinois. What a night, i get to watch SMA, sit back and relax.
Nice job, Eric. I don't know what GM's tolerance spec is for the variation between injectors, but i do agree that if it's running good and there are no codes, then it's fixed. If the pcm is happy, it's all good. I'll have to remember that about using dielectric grease the next time i have to remove and install injectors. Most of the time, it's usually specified to use clean engine oil. Thank you for taking the time to make another video, this stuff is helpful even to people that have been in the business for a long time.

Another demonstration of the absolute need to be able to get, view and understand system(s) data in order to call yourself a mechanic in 2020. (PS - showing both repaired and broken injector data on screen (as well as your notes) is a very nice touch for understanding the process - couple of printouts provides documentation to the customer as well.)

Great diagnosis as always! Im a very old school tech. and even after diagnosing and correcting the problem Id still check a few spark plugs. I changed all 6 of my injectors, just from watching videos, right here on the old Utube! I’m a garbageman, far from a mechanic. Car’s running like a top👍 Love Utube. Without you guys, a lot of people, would be spending a lot of hard earned money, at a shop, that most likely, will take you to the cleaners? Not all, but some?
Always somebody's grubby little fingers in the pie. 😂
A few years ago I helped diagnose an 80s car which had a nasty misfire and was belching out white smoke from the LH exhaust with a STRONG smell of petrol.
No on board diagnostics, but it did the same with that bank of injectors unplugged.
It had those old Bosch injectors which connect to the fuel rail with hose, so we pressure tested the rail with all the injectors out.
Turned out one of the injectors was just stuck wide open like a fire hose. The white 'smoke' was unburned petrol.
Great diagnosis and love the PicoScope graph and annotation.
Thanks for sharing.
A lesson from a parts guy: order the part number on the part you took out, you know it'll be right. Especially in changeover year vehicles, sometimes the system tells you to sell the wrong part. In this case, it needed the injector for an 06, which is technically what the 07 "classic" was.
