- In an effort to salvage a video I came out with this one. I have been messing with a screen recorder on my Autel 908 and it really messed up on the first vid to the point it just wasn't usable. Needless to say I drag you along for "Part 2" and try to salvage what I can. Oh well, some days you get the bear and some day the bear gets you. -Enjoy!

*Be sure to check out PJ over at Voltage Drop Diagnostics as he demonstrates how to check injector flow to diagnose a lean problem on a Toyota. This is a method I learned from him and has been very helpful and can be added to your diagnostic arsenal as well! Tell him Eric O. sent ya* 😉

Thanks for the heads up on the new channel.
What kind of t-sockets you use that have a green handle?
How do u find out a random misfire
These diagnostic videos are indispensable to those of us who count on them for a living. Got one on my four post right now that has a miss but only when under load and no codes.

Hi Eric, After the injector swap and you fired the engine and reviewed the scanner info, you mentioned the slightly negative fuel trim averages and theorized that vapor pulled into the pvc system from fuel contaminated oil was likely he reason. Brilliant. Information like that is another reason as to why I follow your channel. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your vast depth of knowledge. I began my learning 60 years ago in the pages of my beloved HotRod magazine. I still read it (Street Rodder et. al. have just been cancelled as a print media, sadly) and for some years now UA-cam has been a huge contributor to my continued attempt to learn. You’re the best, Eric. Thanks, and best wishes to you and your family. Semper Fidelis Dave Heitman in Omaha
THANK YOU VERY MUCH ERIC!!! For going through the effort of doing this video twice. I genuinely appreciate it. Keep up the great work!
Mistakes happen to everyone using video recording, still salvaged enough to make sense and for us to learn from. Appreciate everything you do, thank you!
Gotta like the way the scope recorded the results, at about 6:21, and it was helpful to see how you had the pressure sensor attached later. Of course the slight variance in the pause between each test doesn't make any difference, since the duration of each 'on' time was identical. Cool to see the test automatically boosted rail pressure to exact baseline before each cylinder test. Excellent point about how excessive fuel in one cylinder causes lean misfires on the rest of the bank. It is so nice to see another SMA video!
Nice video. I like the use of the pico on the rail for the drop test. I gives you solid numbers over just using a fuel pressure gauge. Great job brother.
plus you can save and document easier too
Great video, Eric! This is hands down my favorite way of diagnosing injector flow!
I mentioned it was because of you.. this is my new preferred method. So much more accurate PLUS.... it's nice to have them all captured on the screen. Use cursors to compare, etc. Thanks Pj!
Voltage Drop Diagnostics I knew u would notice the wps test for fuel pressure.
Bill Rimmer behind the scenes, Eric showed us youtubers the results of his test and I had a corolla that I was doing the same test on at the same time haha!
Unfortunately I didn’t get to film mine. But it’s certainly one of my favorite tests for fuel injectors.
Mm, this is more exciting than watching a game show. The outcome isn't scripted. You may have my half hour of attention 👌🏻
Have you been watching politics on tv? The scripted outcomes and all, it's hogwash. This is real honest and in your face entertainment
I tuned in to watch another excellent diag vid but instead I learned a new mechain term: the bigger the glob, the better the job! LOL! Kudos, Dr. O!

Eric O, My greasy old hat is off to YOU Fine Sir .. Im 64 and been fiddling with mechanics for a very long time. You fine sir are teaching this old dog new things with every vid you do. I especially love your explaing the diagnosing that brings you to the fix... Proof positive that an old mechanic can learn new things. You are right if You can do it, I can too, I just LOVE that. Best teacher I ever had , and replacing my DAD is a feat I thought no-one would ever do. So sorry for your loss. Keep the vids coming Ive got a lot to LEARN.... MB in Ut.

Thank you for all the videos. My wife and I took a trip to Corning this fall and I had to stop by and get a photo of myself in your shop driveway. It was a Saturday or I would have said hello.
Jesse Burns , did they same thing this last summer. Was in Corning for a wedding and stopped by SMA on a Saturday for a photo opp in the driveway. I even saw Vinney heading down the road to dollar general.
@@Mark-vc7rm My wife still does not understand why I needed to stop by. That was a highlight of my trip And Corning Glass was OK as well.
It looked like who ever was messing with the injectors was so close to figuring it out. I’m guessing they didn’t have a scanner to to watch the cylinder misfire move cylinders when they swapped the injectors.
Did the same thing but I met Eric and his daughter. My GF was a bit perplexed but thought it was great afterwards.
Went to see the caboose motel 17years ago
Hello, just wanted to thank you for your continued service that you provide on your channel. I look forward to seeing them and appreciate all that you unselfishly share.
These small laptops and handheld computers are amazing..i remember as a kid, walking into a garage and seeing a big metal box in the bay with wire and probes, a tv monitor, i guess, an oscilloscope.

Since I have an 02 Suburban with the mighty 5.3, this video has been most interesting and helpful! As always, Professor O, great job! Nothing better than waking up on Saturday morning and finding an SMA video in the cue!
Thanks for another good video Eric. I have worked on many 5.3s Seems to be one of the easiest engines to work on for me. Never forget I was trying to figure out why I had a misfire on number 2 cylinder on a 2007. All the usual suspects checked out. Did a compression test and found 2 was low. No leakage, just low. Took the head off and found the piston wasn't traveling to the top of the deck. Turned out to be a bent rod. How the hell does that happen? Fun stuff....
Mister-o! I hope you had a great New Year's with you the wife and the kids. God's blessing for 2020 and the future.
The best intro on UA-cam... Love to watch your videos and learn. Thank you and Happy New Year
Back in the late 80’s when I went to GM in-service classes at the Moorestown Nj training center, there would often times be engineers there and they told us before long (they made it seem like 4-5 years away lol) there would be sequentially fired injectors and the computer would control the mixture of each individual cylinder using an O2 sensor for every cylinder. Still haven’t quite got there yet.
Always learning something new on the old SMA channel 👍
Happy New year to you from NW IN.
I glad I stumbled on this channel, I just bought a 2002 Escalade and the videos you've made on these trucks have been incredibly useful.
Just something I noticed, each sides fuel pressure drop was even on bank 1 and bank 2. All the even side pressure lined up to each other and all the odds lined up to each other... just a random observation. Keep up the great videos man.
Nice job, Eric. I don't know what GM's tolerance spec is for the variation between injectors, but i do agree that if it's running good and there are no codes, then it's fixed. If the pcm is happy, it's all good. I'll have to remember that about using dielectric grease the next time i have to remove and install injectors. Most of the time, it's usually specified to use clean engine oil. Thank you for taking the time to make another video, this stuff is helpful even to people that have been in the business for a long time.
Have a Safe and Prosperous New Year
kind of dangerous to assume the part pulled out is the right one when you know someone else has been messing around with it.
What I thought as well. I'll bet he did too?
Maybe, but they had GM part numbers, so it was a pretty safe bet everything was correct to begin with. All bets are off when you start finding aftermarket parts in place of OEM ones.
I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps the other part was too far off to fit.
Russell Hltn Eric said the AC Delco marked part he got from NAPA was "Too short". If your girlfriend says that, just give up and go home.
Richard Akins
The NAPA part was wrong, but it was a NAPA branded part, not the AC Delco part. That one came from Advance Auto Parts and was the correct part. Quite possibly the short injector is far a 2007 and up 5.3. I've run in to parts issues with my 2007 Silverado Classic, so normally I order the parts for a 2006 model to get the correct parts online. The confusion in the parts catalogs is due to the mid year body style change, so it's easier to call it a 2006 because nothing changed for the '07 due to the new model release.
Mr O. That hat is aging like an actual Jeep!
Not only do you have to work hard on cars now you even have to work hard on the recording top job
Been fighting with my truck for months, this looks like it's my problem, thank you a bunch
Bro it would be nice if you had a shop here in Denver Colorado I’d definitely be one of your customers. you’re a good honest man 💯🙏 it’s obvious in all your work
Some SMA in the new year...wonderful having Eric O put me to bed ....now..I hope for a Challenger brake job video for 2020!...with the 6 piston Brembos :)
Great video showing the use of the WPS500 with the Injector Balance Test to isolate an injector problem. Between you, Steve at Simply Diagnostics, Frank Massey, and Paul (Scanner) Danner I've learned a lot about getting the most use out of the WPS500.
So many fantastic innuendos in this video... Love the content brother! All love from Texas.
Is it bad that I wish I lived near Eric, not only because his area looks to be a lovely part of the world to live, but also so he could be my car guy? I haven't had a good local car guy in a lot of years now - the world needs more Erics!
That was very good. I was able to see the data from before and after. I also appreciate learning your techniques like lubing the o-rings to prevent tearing or distorting. 🖖🏻🍀
Useful? yes! Useable? Yes! In addition, very, very interesting! Entertainment bonus - the sayings of the scruffy guy from Harry Potter, thoughts on globs and the "twister technique". Another demonstration of the absolute need to be able to get, view and understand system(s) data in order to call yourself a mechanic in 2020. (PS - showing both repaired and broken injector data on screen (as well as your notes) is a very nice touch for understanding the process - couple of printouts provides documentation to the customer as well.)
Eric another great video. One thing I would like to add is it would be beneficial to install a fuel pressure gauge after installing the new injector and looking to make sure the new (Never Ever Worked - :) ) injector isn't leaking into the cylinder as well. :)
Keep up the good work sir !
Douglas Montgomery 20:25
Pauly D , meant after the install of the injector. (Around 16:16)
Thank you for making these videos and I always learn something new when I watch. I bought a scan tool that I can plug in and look at a few things and your videos help me understand what I am seeing like the fuel trim and other things, what is normal and what isn't. I just bought a used 2018 GMC Sierra so another reason to watch. Days after I bought it the fuel pump died and they replaced it under warranty. The truck was acting up when I took it in and when they did a test drive it completely died on them and they had to have it towed back to the garage.
The injector to fuel rail clips are probably underneath the workbench! lol The Pico scope is definately a valuable tool! Good video!
Great diagnosis and love the PicoScope graph and annotation.
Thanks for sharing.
Saturday morning SMA video and coffe life is good.
Hi , I really enjoy watching your video . I drive and repair the same vehicle for 40yrs . Happy New Year from the far East....New Subscriber.
another good video Eric. Thank you for the in-depth explanation. Wish Hondas had a tap in port on the fuel. Anyway Eric have a good one Artie ❤️️
I'm Just waiting on a WUW with Special guest CAMERA MAN and STUNTMAN pan the camera out the garage door with a cloud of white smoke rolling over the shop lol.
Still have not figured out check the fuel pressure on the two banks. There is only one place to check the pressure. I think this situation could happen more times than most think. But most shops would just recommend replacing the objectors. Skip doing a complete diagnostics to determine which specific injector was faulty.
On the post-repair Pico data:
1-3-5-7 look consistent with each other
2-4-6-8 look consistent with each other
Since the Pico was on the even side a little extra dynamic pressure drop I think can explain the discrepancy.
I think Scanner Danner might disagree with your 1.5 psi is ok though, based on his latest video this week.
I'm just a weekend warrior though.
Fuel flow is proportional to the square root of pressure, so 1.5psi makes a very small difference.
Always learn something from watching, thank you for the lesson and entertainment.
It's nice to have equipmenthat can see pulses And wave forms very cool
8:13 I look away for one second then I hear a Big Bang and hear him say “oh shit!” lol
To keep your osha approved bucket from slipping.... Take a piece of used Heater hose cut to length.. Cut down the middle and run it around the lip of the bucket all the way around. There you go. No slip bucket step...
👍👍👍
I was wondering how you got the pressure drop profile on the scope. Thanks for showing the test procedure using the diagnostic tool. Can't justify buying one but it's nice to know how the professionals do their troubleshooting. Great stuff!
I noticed napa is incorrect alot when it comes to injectors @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Missed ya over the holidays. Hope your family had a nice Christmas. Good to get my SMA fix again on the big 5.3 chev-err-lay. Someone didn`t lube those o-rings...and gorilla`d the injectors in which tore the o-rings. Nice job Prof. O. Happy New Year SMA family. Be safe...God Bless.
You can leave clips on injectors...works perfect. Have seen many young guys that never lube o rings....and have leaks and redo's. You do good work, no doubt, sharp as a tack. I would get WD40 by the gallon and use spray bottles. Guys would snicker at first....then kneel later and ask for help.
Great video. I’d say you got a better injector from Advance since its the OE injector so it actually worked out better in the end parts wise.
Sam Squires most likely came from worldpac since advanced owns them now
Many thanks for this lesson and explanation Eric.
Try looking your part up in on Dorman or Rock Auto and cross reference on Napa. You are still only looking it up once. I work for Napa in Canada and that's a trick a co-worker taught me. Cheers!
YEP! recommended to change all fuel injectors! BTW (O-rings) The shelf life of each polymer family as practiced by Parker O-Ring Division is listed below: 5 years: Polyurethane (milleable) 15 years
Nice find/Repair. Love the waveform and use of Pico. I have done the same test myself, gives a great visual. Good work man
great Job like we knew already DR. O
Impressive -15:20 - cross-handed double twister with a half gainer....
"Pullen in and out BOOM! Nick the end of the rubber"
Change them all?! Does no one look at the price of parts before making that suggestion?! Ps, removing the fuel rail isn't difficult and should have been done by the first yahoo that tried to fix it. Kudos as always Sir!
I just had a traverse come in and it had p0300, p0301, p0303, p0305 checked the plugs and they were all black like a lot of carbon build up. I remembered a story i was told about an article than came out. This van had a misfire on cyl 3 and everything was changed still misfiring. Turns out it had clogged cats transverse v6 and cause exhaust to build up go back into the chamber. Same issue i had on the traverse. Its good to remember old stories
The guy is a trouble shooting master. I am poor so sometimes throw parts at things. Remember if Eric can do it we can do it. If we have tens of thousands for test equipment.
😄😄awsome video SMA these videos keep getting better and better 🙌
Tell you what I wish you were a friend of mine in my town here cuz I’ve got a gremlin living in my 05 5.3 Silverado! Fuel pump, injectors, coils, relays, all sensors, plugs , wires, mass air, etc! Still lacks power and has a rich code for bank one and two. This thing is driving me craaaazzzzyyyy!!!
I see what you did. You went out and got yourself "some of those Q-tips."

Thanks that was very informative. My 09 has a misfire. I appreciate the info.
Oh good, you're back.
I have the same problems but my injectors are insect (4.6) even older stuff.i kinda wish my stuff was newer. But it is what it is. When running it gets great gad mileage and I love it I bought another and plan on fixing it too.
"Things tend to fall in the hole when you pull out." Made me giggle.
Eric, I don't think you can use silicone/dielectric grease or silicone (dry lubricant) spray on fuel injectors because the silicone chemically damages the oxygen sensors and catalyst materials FYI. Service manuals usually say use clean engine oil only for this reason.
The Master Tech wins again! Great video Eric (as always!)....Happy New Year to you and your family!
We have here a Chevy Silverado 5.3 Autumn edition!! ;-)
My 2003 with 210,000 miles had the number 1 injector fail. Took out the spark plug and it was washed with gas. The truck came with the upgraded spider from the factory.
The failure caused a po301 and a po300 in that order.
Great job Mr. O!!! Very Interesting!!!!!!!!
Great diagnosis Mr O!!!!
Bigger the glob……….the better the job…………..very nice
Cheap tests for DYIers: pull all spark plugs on bank reporting rich and look for the carbon free/ clean spark plug. Unburned excess fuel cleans the spark plug. Also, for ~$20 on eBay you can buy a fuel injector activator that activates each fuel injector for given period of time. Watch the fuel pressure drop for each injector (cycle accessory to build pressure back up after each test). The outlier injector that drops more presure is your leaky one (if completely stuck open it will drop pressure regardless of being powered. This case usually causes rough start up, and you'll smell the fuel buildup from cycling accessory when you remove that plug). Both tests are good for DYI and pro's without access to all the bells and whistles
Always learning. Amazing that the human brain can store so much data. Lots O terabytes!
Thanks for the video.
Pico scope just got pushed up in priority of my list of stuff to buy. 👍
i know your shop is small but ya really ought to think about a diagnostic cart so you dont drop a laptop or a scanner. might be easier to record or film too. thanks for bringing us along even tho you lost the screen recordings.
Nicking the end off the rubber And BOOM! LOL!
Thanks for sharing! Happy New Year to you and the fam!
When autos were a whole lot easier to work on the first thing we would do is a compression test or balance test to establish we had a good motor
you're the man thank you for your service GS out
Is silicone grease bad for sensors? After decades (yea I’m old) of hearing silicone contamination will ruin O2 sensors, I stopped using silicone based lubes, sprays, greases for fuel systems/engine components so long ago and haven’t really questioned it. Is this an outdated practice or a myth? Are sensors compatible now? I remember back in the day something about the ion pump gets damaged from the contamination right?
Welcome Back. Happy New Year
Oh the number 6 injector...what an SOB. Gave me a hard start condition on a 2001 GMC Sierra 5.3L. Would take 2 or 3 attempts to start when cold. Start ok when warm or hot. No codes and ran perfect otherwise. There was always a metallic ping just before it would start. Always suspected an injector because of the ping sound. One day the injector failed completely. By that time you could find them in the junkyards for practically nothing. Had a set laying around. Swapped it and fixed both of my problems. Suppose if I had your test equipment when this started I would've seen the stuck injector on a cold start ? Wish you were my mechanic. Not many good and trustworthy one's in the big city. You ain't missing anything except the Zombie Apocalypse that's about to hit us !
thx for the vid... Happy New Year to you, your family and staff.
Excellent my truck started to do the same
, same year same miss fire I will be doing that next do I need to reset the error code engine blinking light I know on some parts it redoes it itself thanks for the very detailed info.
Napa (not a sponsor) Syl-Glide or Parker 884 o-ring lubricant work well too.
I have a 99 w/ a 6.0 that does this from time to time. Only difference being that the misfire is pretty faint and the pcm does not detect the misfires...they are prominent at idle and seem to go away under throttle. I typically take them out and throw them in the ultrasonic cleaner and run some injector cleaner thru them using a 12v power supply. Good diag E...keep em comin.
Would a silicone based grease cause any problems with O2 sensors? Years ago I had to be very careful about what sealants were used in induction areas because minute amounts of silicone based solutions would “glass “ over O2 sensors.I love your careful and methodical Troubleshooting Eric!
I kept hitting the 10 sec playback @ 8:13 🤣
There's your problem lady, it's this little guy.
