How to fix AFM misfire on 5.3 Chevy
Вставка

- In this video I will show you how to fix a misfire p0300 problem with DOD/AFM (displacement on demand), (active fuel management) system on the 2005-2010 GM 5.3 V8 engine. IF you are having a misfire on cylinders 1,7,4,or6 you may have a lifter getting stuck in the deactive cylinder position or collapsed lifter. This Hack will turn off the DOD/AFM system so that it will no longer collapse the lifters or deactivate cylinders. This hack will make your engine run in V8 mode all the time and never switch to V4 mode. (Warning: this WILL make you check engine light come on and stay on.)
This is good info.
AFM - will go down in history as one of the stupidest ideas that GM has come up with. Best thing I ever did was stick a range technologies AFM delete into the obd port on my 2011 5.3.
Did you have any issues with that? I put one of those Range chips into my 2018 silverado, and whenever it was plugged in i would have a super harsh downshift while coming to a stop. going into 1st-2nd gear.
Not just gm, ford & chrysler too.
I disagree. The dumbest was the V8-6-4 Cadillac 4.1 in the early 80s
@@frenchfrysz6695Wow. I am battling a hard downshift into 2nd as well. Dealership can not replicate it. That would makes since now since they have to remove my Range AFM plug. Very interesting.
@@frenchfrysz6695 yah I had the exact same issue with my rage. My truck downshifts hard into second. Did you ever find out how to fix this
Excellent! I too would take this option and top it off with a small piece of black tape over the check engine light…
06 Avalanche was doing this...unplugged the brake sensor and it absolutely worked....Thanks for sharing this hack!!
What brake sensor ??
@@andrewgibson9520 It literally is what this video is about, it shows you what to unplug.
Hey man I dont ever leave comments on anything but you really helped me out. My 09 avalanche has been a beast. I thought for sure at 270k it needed a new motor when I got p0306. Watched this video and my truck is running like a champ
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment!

@@Stoneglasssdid it work??!!
Wow nice. Unfortunatly. I need to get it inspected. Or i will get harassed by you know who
Did it work?
This guy deserves a Nobel peace prize!
I would have thought that even though you were able to disable the AFM, that the lifter would have still been stuck. Apparently, it was able to unstuck itself after you disabled AFM. I just ordered a Range module to disable my AFM, so hopefully, I'll avoid the stuck lifter problem and not have a check engine light staring me in the face. The issue I could see with having your check engine light on after your fix, is that if something else were to go wrong with the engine you wouldn't know it, since your check engine light is already on.
I have already bought all the lifters and then I found this video!!!!!
Hey man I can't thank you enough I been dealing with this after replacing everything you are the man
Did work ?.
Unreal! Was gearing up ready to order lifters etc etc etc. 👍🏼
Very helpful. Same problem just on cylinder 6. Thanks 👍
Did you have the lifter tick and did this take the tick away?
Tow/Haul button will also keep it full v-8, only drawback is remote start will NOT work while the check engine light is on, not a big deal though if you don't use it much.
Does it really? I thought that only changed the shift patterns. My (very early) 2007 Tahoe doesn't have the "M" on the shifter, so, I've been looking for a way to keep it in V8 mode without buying the Range OBD thing or spending thousand$ doing an AFM delete on a 17 year old truck that's only worth $3k. I'll have to try this since I DO have a Tow/Haul button on the stalk.
I'm dropping everything and running to try this now
Thanks for sharing this information.
You tubers I recommend you speed the video up. Southern folk do speak slow 😅. Thanks again!
Lol I typically always speed up video, but with this one has to go a full 2x 😂😂😂 id UA-cam supported 2.5, I probably would have went for it lol
Thanks I'm going to try this. I have this problem on #1.
You sir...deserve this 👑
So did you have to un stick the lifter before you Unplugged the sensor?
Yes. I've never seen judt disabling the DOD unstick a DOD lifter.
There are better ways to disable AFM/DOD with custom ECM programming with HP Tuners. There are also devices you plug into the ALDL plug that will disable the AFM/DOD. I prefer the custom ECM programming. And disabling AFM/DOD will not always restore a collapsed lifter. In fact I have never seen it restore a collapsed lifter with only disabling the system. I have heard of a procedure where you pull the valve cover and rocker arm and pushrod and fit a long screwdriver down the pushrod hole and whack thr top of the lifter to unstick it. But if you keep it in 8 cyl mode where the lifters never collapse to begin with there is less chance of having a DOD lifter failure. The problem with having a SES light on all the time is if you have a different code set you are apt to not know it because you think it is just on the the brake booster code. Also having a code set will disable remote start if equipped.
Praise GOD IN JESUS Thank YOU
I have a 2008 silverado 5,3 I tried unplugging the brake sensor didnt do anything mine is misfire on cylinder # 1 im pretty sure that the lifter is stuck, if that lifter is mechanically stuck will it have to be un stuck before this would work
If it is stuck this may not work. If your oil pressure is low try changing the oil and taking out the filter that is under the oil pressure sensor. It might work or it might not. Good luck. Thanks for the comment.
Same here, any luck ???
Add some marvel mystery oil. Drive around half hour and it usually will unstuck your lifter.
@@James-1538 Yup,i used a quart transmission fluid drained oil after 5 days now its quiet no more tapping and clattering

Well done sir! I am looking at buying a 2006 Envoy Denali . Is their a definitive way to tell if I have DOD or AFM on the 5.3L? I have searched the net , forums & found yours on YT. (But with varying answers) Is it in the VIN#,?Or Tell by the valley plate? the owners manual does not even mention it. they say they get worst with age.If it was newer I would use your technique . But they say at the age of the SUV its not a question if its when. take care & best regards.
AFM needs about 27 psi to activate. I have low oil pressure (probably the oil pan relief valve is bad) and rarely makes it to 27psi on the the highway so it never activates.
Range technology products have a plug in device that keeps your truck in V8 mode with no codes being thrown. $200 but works
Hey! thanks for the info!
@@onetgarage9429 also if you put the shifter in manual and select 1 gear less than your trans (gear 5 for 6spd) it'll keep it out of DOD/AFM
The lifters still fail eventually I use the range and mine went out
I put one in a few years ago and you have to watch it, It gets bypassed and goes back to v4. Unplug and plug it back in gets it working again. Still going through oil, GM- Chevy wtf?

Same here, mine failed inspections also, forgetting to unplug it prior to getting the inspection.
My 2015 Yukon Denali is currently in the shop having all the lifters replaced. I have one of those Range AFM Disabler that I'm going to use when I get my vehicle back.
What is that test set? Are they expensive? I would love to look at the codes and alarms in my system.
Would it be cheaper just to get another 5.3 I have hella codes and it’s ticking and I have white smoke coming put
But what if the lifter is already tapping will it work then
Was your misfire just random shaking at a red light? No issues under load.
So i am throwing the p9306/300 and it specifically ssys its cylinder 6 misfire. Changed the spark plugs my next go to is tbd coils and wires im reslky thinking that is the issue with the behaviir of the truck. Does this hack apply to the cylinder 6 misfire also?
What if I’m having a misfire on all 4 AFM cylinders?
May 5th 10:00 pm do u have to clear the codes. I unplugged mine on a 2008 Silverado and it didn’t change anything. My code is misfire on cyl 7. Have to undo battery or anything like that
Mine still went into v4 on dash, weather it actually did or not im not sure
My 2013 Sillverado did the same thing
Did you have to unstuck the lifter first
Will this work on a 2014 silverador
Hey man o4 tahoe doesn't have that sensor and I replaced everything you did so what can I do
I don't think 2004 had AFM/DOD.
can I replace lifters only on one head ? do I need to replace camshaft ?
It depends on if the failed lifter damaged the cam lobe. If the lobe is OK and you are replacing it with another DOD lifter then you do not need to replace the cam. If you want to run standard lifters on DOD cylinders then that requires changing the cam to a non DOD cam. The one bolt cams can be replaced with the 07-13 4.8L cam. That cam will also work if your 5.3L had variable valve timing with the phaser on the cam gear.
U R a genius....
Thanks for the video. Was your vehicle smoking also?
If it’s smoking on start and it’s your pcv valve I had this problem change my valve cover cause on 04 and up models pcv is built into it
@@kalebpyle7476 I changed the valve cover for that reason. It still has the p0300 code and the misfire. I think I am going to try your trick before I swap the engine.
Hi Robert. I have a misfire in 4 and white smoke out the exhaust. Just got the news today to get a new engine. How's your situation going? I have know idea if a delete from one of the plug in devices could engage my lifter again and fix the problem or does the smoke mean the damage has been done?
The 2012 model is different, the sensor is not in the same location and when un plugged the service brakes, service abs all come on. So not the same for a 2012
Unplugged on my 09 envoy and no check engine light came on???
Came on when I restarted
I been dealing with traction control and engine light popping up and the truck starts shaking but I will be trying this
Did this fix your problem? I have a 2017 Yukon XL Denali with a 6.2 and cylinder 6 has left the chat. Exact same symptoms as yours. Hope this worked for you, I know this will prevent it from going to 4 cylinders in the future, but not sure how to get it “unstuck” and back in V8 mode.
Would this work on the 07 Tahoe LS flex fuel
My 2022 suburban has misafire on cylinders 3
Change 16 lifter camshaft spark plug ignition coil injector and still the same
Tak it to the dealer it been 2 weeks and they didn’t figure out the problem
Will this hack work on a 2015 Silverado 5.3
How in the world did you figure this out?
yea id like to know also
I have an 04 Tahoe 5.3 flex and I have code p0300 put in new engine and still getting the same code
Will it work 2002 Silverado
I need help man, 07 suburban 5.3, misfire at idle only and no noise or ticking, checked with a scan tool and misfire counting on cylinder 2 and 5 I already changed plugs coil and wires still persisting.
Could be an upper intake leak from the gaskets. It’s a pretty common problem. Sometimes it sets a p0101 code also or a lean code. But sometimes just the misfire at idle. You can get some carb cleaner and spray around the intake gaskets while it’s running and see if the misfire smooths out for a second, if it does then your upper intake gaskets need to be changed. It also could be an injector or your DOD lifters.
@@elliotexplores3778 okay I’ll start at the manifold leak test and see what happens
@@elliotexplores3778 so I put a long screw driver on the misfiring injectors and good injectors and they all sound with the same pulse. Sprayed the manifold on both sides and no change in idle, so most likely must be lifters or camshaft. Oh well gonna ride it till the wheels fall off then do a swap.
I read a class action lawsuit has been started on the DOD engines.
I have heard that also. Thanks for the comment!

I found out on UA-cam that if you disconnect the brake booster or something like tha I don’t remember exactly but it worked on my 2012 Sierra 1500.
How did you get the lifter unstuck. Mine is tapping
Sometimes they will unlock on their own. This was the case with mine after I changed the oil and took the filter out from under the oil pressure sensor. Unfortunately some are already too far gone and won’t unlock. Good luck.
Thanks buddy
@@onetgarage9429 can you unstick the valve after removing valve cover
Easy hack but it disables your remote start
Ah, true! It would. Mine doesn’t have remote start.
My 2008 silverado 5.3 dosent have that plug🥲😢 do you know why??
Either me
Another simple fix is on your gear selector, switching it to M5. It will keep you in v8 mode all of the time without much compromise, the only annoying thing about it is having to do it every time you drive the vehicle.
This Should Be A Factory Recall!!!
This was soooo helpful! I was having the EXACT same problem on the EXACT same cylinder! Mine is an 07 Avalanche so the sensor location was different but it still worked! My local garage that I've trusted for years wanted $3,000 to replace both heads and valves along with gaskets and labor. But after unplugging that sensor it ran fine and would still use the V8 and 4 cylinder modes! After a week and a half I decided to plug the sensor back in for the heck of it and it's STILL running great and getting the same mpg that I was before the problem started! Thank you sooo much again!
Where was yours located? I have an 08 suburban and I can't figure out which one it is.
sir can i unplug afm soket my gmc same problem
Thanks for this. My Buddy is currently having this misfire problem. 👍
This is a temporary fix, these engines come with a high volume oil pump to collapse the lifters and you can disable the system with a tuner as well, but eventually when the lifters permanently collapse your engine will start to bog down randomly and oil will bleed into the intake and cylinder walls, because the afm mechanical parts are still in the engine and you will get random misfires on those certain cylinders plus the camshaft will still try to activate/deactivate those cylinders because it's still physically in the engine. I took my intake off after having oil seep into 2 of those 4 cylinders and my intake had literally 2 quarts of oil in it
That's why you put a sleeve under oil pressure sensor to close off oil passage to the vlom solenoids
@@ronclaman156is there videos on this
You may have other things amuck. DI engines are the worst about oil consumption, especially when the piston rings get gummed up & stuck in the piston grooves. clogged valve cover port or stuck EGR valve is also a common issue with oil being sucked thru the intake.
The camshaft has nothing to do with activating the DOD. It the solonoids in the VLOM that activate it. I have disables DOD on literally hundreds of DOD equipped vehicle and have never experienced the oil in the manifold issue caused by disabling the DOD. If you are getting oil in the manifold you have other issues besides just disabling DOD.
I used the range obs AFM delete. About $200 on Amazon
Do you know what could cause vibrations when engine goes to V4 mode? Lifters not stucked, afm works but i feel bad vibrations. With Range OBD device everything is ok. No fault codes, no knocking sounds. 2011 chevrolet camaro ss L99 engine
differential? CV joints? U joints? what did you find?
I've had the same issue but I just never unplug my range.. I'd like to know what causes this though
the oil pressure sending unit/ manifold pressure sensor /brake booster vacuum sensor / will also shut off the dod /afm according to gm's faulty causes for it to shut down if gone bad or disconnected .... the oil sensor and or brake booster can be disconnected and the vehicle will still run good and this will shut the afm /dod down by the computer ... i do the oil pressure disconnect , and it shuts dod down and runs good with check engine light on ...vehicle is a grand prix gxp 5.3 l.. ls4 with the crazy afm system on it ... what a stupid idea as far as I am concerned ...when you have a great engine design why put a time bomb afm system in it ? CRAZY !
I have a question. I have a 2008 Suburban 5.3 and I want to prevent the problems that arise from the AFM & DOD. If I replace the valve cover with the new baffle and then do the tune to the ECM would that prevent the engine light from coming on? Thanks for your hard making this video...
On another video a guy just replaced the map sensor right there on top of the manifold and that fix the misfire you might want to try that also.
I'm literally about to get bundled up and go out in this snow and this 15 degree temperature to see if this fixes my issue. If i wanted a 4 cylinder i would have got one. Thanks man

replacing the lifters completely solves the problem because it addresses whats wrong and u dont need this video if you do that.
So this may help with cars being shitty down low. i have this issue on my 2016 chevy. if you have a mechanical failure, one of the easiest solutions is to bring your car to 3000 RPM for 5-10 mins (look that part up on here i dont remember 100%) and then you should finally get the tapping noises to quiet down if not stop all together. this is again a TEMPORARY FIX UNTIL U GOT THE FUNDS TO have an afm delete kit applied, or u can do it yourself if u feel like pulling the heads to get to the cover with the rubber gromets underneath. if u chiz out the right parts on the cover afm will be disabled. u can also get kits containing small plugs for the engine which will also delete afm, as well as the cars computer ecu u can delete afm there as well. there are a ton of ways to deal with this issue. best way is to do an afm delete(kit) from texas speed, get link bar style lifters, remove the trays because they get old eventually AND FAIL TOO.
Again this will trick will make your car more drivable/ if ur able to free ur lifter from the stuck position with this fix it will give temporary relief.

Plus, I'm seeing a push of smoke after pulling out from a stop sign or red light intermittently. I replaced both valve cover with the updated version, so I know it's not that. Well, that's 2 questions, I guess. Is the change in exhaust sound normal when the AFM switches and what could be causing the intermittent puff of smoke? I've got a 3rd question for you..... Is it normal for the AFM to be switching at low speeds, like going through town at 25mph?
