It's strange but rightly so that the winner shines in all the glory of winning this great race but the efforts of the placed should also be recognised there have been some heroic moments for me in my eyes crisp 1973 a truly wonderful gallant second to the mighty red rum all national runners are heroes sadly over the years all to many have lost there lives

Horrible watching Alverton again but what an unbelievably brave performance ffom Rubstic.Five fence's from hom he was treading water and going backwards,he the recovered but again at 2 out he looked beaten ,so how the hell he found the guts to win was amazing
This was the first indication of animal welfare being raised as a serious issue, not only on the death of Alverton, Jonjo O'neill never did complete the course as a jockey and fell in exactly the same place the following year, but also on the pile up at the Chair where nine horses were put out of the race including Kintai who was killed. Caused by the two loose horses who had no intention of the jumping the fence but were funneled into it by the rails, they stopped and those behind them has no chance. The rails were removed for subsequent Nationals.
You wonder why the Aintree executive didn't twig that from the near disaster in '75 with those four loose horses who also could have changed their minds.
While I accept what you say, for many this was part of the unpredictable nature of the race. The fences had a significant modification c 1961 as a result of pressure mounting in proceeding years and Bechers was modified albeit relatively minor after deaths in 1954
nice your show the Grand National but what happens to the 60's Grand National and if their any chance will you show other races want over the Grand National such as the Topham Chase and the Fox hunters chase now this race it's changed name now please
If you look hard enough on UA-cam you can find every televised Grand National, this is the best quality I have seen. There some some Movietone and Pathe News clips of these nationals which provide an interesting alternative especially the pre television nationals, as for Topham/Foxhunters/Becher Chase/Sefton Chase there a good number up and around, although there is a gap between 2007- 2015 ish.

I often wonder how many of runners these days would get round e.g only 7 of 34 runners got round this year and 15 out of 40 last year so i think maybe if the fences next Saturday where built the same size maybe 7 or 8 of the 40 would jump round and many would fall, unseat, be brought down, refusals etc
The fences back then seem more stiff than they were bigger. There's a shot in the British Movietone News's 1968 Grand National at Valentines and you see how solidly the spruce was packed into the fence... they held their shape after the field had jumped them.

Throughout its history the race has been infamous for killing horses." Its as though they are writing from the year 1979.
I think similar numbers when finish as different types of horses would run and others swerve the national. Also some of the PU these days when have departed earlier

A horse that deserves more recognition is Spanish Steps.One of the greats in Grand National history .
He had a long steeplechasing career: won the 1969 Hennessey and was in the 1976 National.

The 1979 Chair incident is well remembered when 9 had their hopes ended. In 1983, 8 were stopped here including 1 remounted who pulled up at the Water

My friend {I was a kid at the time} chose Rubstic as his horse {Family bet}
the pilgarlic was a gallant and brave horse.

The favorite Alverton died in the fall at Becher's on the second circuit
That is sadly part of tne sport accidents happen.

The earliest Foxhunters I have seen is a clip from 1976 and the oldest complete 1978. Im sure the BBC has them all, but it comes at a steep cost

...yep....a horse can walk through the chair now...in fact I think one did....

@@theracingdemon3141These seemed to retain their height better as tightly packed. I believe every 6 or 8 years the fences were completely rebuilt

The horse died before the jump and went through the fence. Jockey to blame??
