Sad indeed how he was lying on the ground and his head moved around a few times the last bits of life draining away all the the excitement of so many. But you know the saying : every dog has its day
Why didn't the chair jump have an escape for loose horses to run through instead of causing a pile up and death. Looks like the organizers wanted this to happen for the enjoyment of a few
@@NeilR4960 This was one incident that led to changes in 1990. Beau Bob 1975, Winter Rain 1977, Alverton, Dark Invy 1987, Seeandem and Brown Trix - the accumulation was too great to ignore
Weights came out before the Gold Cup otherwise Alverton would have been carrying an extra stone in weight. You can't blame the owners for running him. But shocked that Jonjo allowed Synchronised to run thirty odd years later who suffered the same fate.
@@beverleymorris167 I can't remember a current Gold Cup winner running again until Garrison Savannah. Royal Frolic ran in GN but it was a long time after his GC win.
@@julzyboy1973 true....poor Alverton had won a Arkle, gold cup, probably would have won more gold cups, he was a classy horse, shame. Greed! Same greed that killed dawn run. Done enough for season, should've been put away.👍
@@beverleymorris167 Greed possibly, but fame more likely as still to this day, Golden Miller is the only horse to do the double and in those days your allotted weight was bound to be significantly higher the following year. I recall horses like Burrough Hill Lad allotted 12st5 and Desert Orchid 12'2 - not that they would have run, but just shows classy horses were treated harshly when the race was nothing like park races unlike today
Poor Alverton. I remember watching the fall and you could tell that it was bad.
....thanks for the upload...everytime I've tried to upload this national it was blocked....
You're welcome
Probably blocked because of what had happened at bechers 2nd time
rough and tumble was the first horse i ever backed!
The pilgarlic some horse
what have you guys then BHB, HRA, now BHA what have they done to this race
Ben Nevis fell at the chair then won the next year
he was fancied this year and would have been an interesting finish if him and Alverton were there at the last.
Alverton RIP

@@NeilR4960 after this incident in 79 they opened up the run towards the chair if you watch the 1980 race you can see the difference
