Spanish Steps has to be one of the unluckiest horses...3 successive nationals where basically the only horses that beat him were Crisp, Red Rum and L'escargot 😂 Charles Dickens the one exception in '74. Most underrated National horse ever?

I've watched this all the way through now, and I think what stands out most to me is the sudden shift to colour in 1969! Even just after an hour and a half of watching the black and white races it was very striking and exciting...and that's from someone who's spent his entire life with colour TVs. Can't imagine how mind-blowing that must have been for people in the late 60s.

The Dikler was a courageous horse who won a Gold Cup and was unlucky not to win two others. Trained by the great Fulke Walwyn.

I was convinced he was winning the grand national in 2014 but he was brought down by a no hoper at the canal turn 🤦🏼‍♂️ absolutely hosed up here under a big weight, he was a class horse

More fallers in this than the National two days later, I'm fairly sure. The 2005 National wouldn't have totally been amiss in the modern era. But it's slightly more palatable when it's as a result of jumping and horsemanship than because the fences are now just fuzzy green hurdles

I remember thinking this National was a little uneventful at the time...how things change...imagine saying to someone in 2011 that there'd be 4 jockeys on the deck in the "world's greatest horse race". What a sorry state of affairs we're in. The protestors aren't happy (they want the race to stop), the majority of fairweather fans are now indifferent (most people don't care about the actual stories of the horses/trainers/jockeys, they just watch for the carnage), and the real racing fans are also left feeling like their one shining star that brought the nation together is all but dead. Horrible world we live in. Nobody being happy is the woke way to keep us all in line

Horrible watching Alverton again but what an unbelievably brave performance ffom Rubstic.Five fence's from hom he was treading water and going backwards,he the recovered but again at 2 out he looked beaten ,so how the hell he found the guts to win was amazing

Backed Balthazar King at 33-1 E/W and Pineau De Re at 25-1 E/W a month before the race. Felt pretty smug after this one...

The ITV and BBC vaults must contain video film of many, many horse races from the 1960s, which will probably never again see the light of day. It's a great shame when there must be other races that Arkle, Flyingbolt and Mill House, among others, contested and which were covered by those television channels. Unlike America, where it values its television heritage, the two British channels of the day erased so many television programmes by actually taping over much of its video footage which, quite frankly, is absolutely disgraceful.
