I got to dig in the Morenci Arizona mine back in 96. For 20 dollars they'd give you hard hat and take you down in the mine. I filled up an 8 gallon bucket with Azurite, Malacite and Chrysocolla . My friend found a copper hair sticking out of a chunk of Chrysocolla.Thank you for making this video Dan.
Hi Dan, glad you could come and visit Arizona, I am taking my mom and some relatives to visit the old family claim, Gleeson Az, in March when all the wildflowers will be out.
Thank you for the videos! I love learning about this stuff! I have a question. I saw a show about toxic minerals. Do you ever have to worry about such a thing while you're out prospecting?
Welcome to AZ Dan! The blue mineral at 8:30 looks more like a weathered chrysocolla, and the samples at 13:00 look like Shattuckite. Old mine dumps are excellent hunting grounds for mineral samples as many of the old time miners wouldn't keep anything lower than 1% grade. But there are still plenty of great samples that are less than 1% grade.
I compliment you on your presentation style. It seems obvious that it’s just your personality sincerely shining through, but still, it’s very appealing. You definitely earned my subscription many videos ago.
Beautiful samples! The other weekend I was walking on an old dirt road in some mountains, and stumbled upon a quartz vain that had malachite and what I believe is copper silcate.
Many use four wheelers like side by side or dune buggy types or motorcycles instead of even jeeps or SUVs or pickups with 4 wheel on the steep bad narrow dirt rock roads. You sure found pretty stuff!
What beautifull minerals . . So vibrant . . Also enjoy your GLOTD . . Always intersting . . Was wondering Dan if you had ever been or thought of going to Australia for a bit of a fosic ?? . . Do some detecting and paning . . Mine for Opal etc . . . ? Till the next time . . Bye from New Zealand . .🍻👍🙏🇳🇿
This reminds me of when i was younger, my grandfarther, father, and i used to be part of the Gold Prospectors Association of America, and we used to go to plenty of areas that looked just like this but there was one specific area and it was outside of Orogrande Nm. There are some mountains right behind the town that have tons of mines and deep vent shafts scattered around. One of the mines went completely through a mountain. was fun just to walk through it and see the mineral deposits and what not.
Beautiful!!. My cousin's grandfather had a copper mine in Arizona in the 50's and 60's. I have a piece of slag from it. My cousin had some azurite and malachite specimens that were epic!
😁👋👍👍👏👏💕🙏🏻 Thank you for sharing another great episode. Has anybody been to the Caledonia copper mine in the UP of Michigan besides me ? There are so many things to find there. Besides copper, just a tad bit is silver. datelite, Epidote Stone and crystal, Dolomite, and on and on the list goes. Whatever you're find in the allotted time. Is yours to keep.
I know a spot in Western Australia where there are boulders of solid metallic copper. One of them is the size of a large car sticking out of the ground.
I really enjoyed this video of rock hondin I like the way you explain the kinds of minerals thank you for making this video I try to see your videos every day
The difference between malachite and azurite is the unit cell structure, meaning the way the atoms are arranged. The formula of malachite is Cu2CO3(OH)2 while azurite is Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2. Since azurite is essentially the same but with less OH (hydroxide), the atoms have to arrange in a different way which makes the structure interact differently with light, leading to the color difference.
When you first buy a 4wd vehicle it's a good idea to take it out and find some juniper branches and the like to scrape it against. Get some good scrapes and scratches. Then, when you are on hairy roads, you can concentrate on the footing and not worry about the extraneous stuff! 🙂
5:10 Little addition to the GLOTD: As Chris said, azurite and malachite are in fact not sulfides of copper - they are basic carbonates, which means it's a mixed hydroxide and carbonate. All of the sulfur has been oxidized at this point to form SO2, sulfate and other oxidation products. During the oxidation process, there also has to be a source of CO2 or carbonate ions present. What determines if it's azurite or malachite from a chemical point of view is the carbonate to hydroxide ratio, azurite has the same number of carbonate and hydroxide ions, malachite has two hydroxides per carbonate. When in contact with water, azurite can degrade over time forming malachite, releasing CO2, sometimes creating beautiful pseudomorphs
Hey Dan, my husband and I watch. Welcome to our native state, Arizona. We were both born here, I am second gen. It would be so fun to prospect with you. We are in Mesa. Which Cooper mine is this? You guys got some awesome copper minerals.
I would say, it is up for debate, whether you can call azurite and malachite sulfides, as they do not contain sulfur. They are oxidized/carbonized from sulfides, but alk the sulfur is gone. Cabonates or carbonhydrites, not sulfides in my book. Beautiful stuff, you found. 👍💪👍🌞🌞
I was very surprised to see the pointy sharp malachite crystals. I have only see malachite sliced to reveal the botryoidal (sp) bubbles with eyes all over the place.

Yeah I was thinking chrysocolla or maybe chalcanthite as well.
Fascinating stuff! Thanks for taking us along. Excellent video!
Yes, can not agree more !
Reminds me of when I was younger and looking through TIME/LIFE books on minerals, I love it.
Glad to see you’re in my home state! We have some amazing rocks to explore, fun video!
Yes you do!
I always love your positive
I love the look of copper ore. I have a nice sized chunk that I got from a friend of mine.
YAY another Dan Hurd premiere, can't wait

Nice looking blue & greens for sure Dan! Wish I wasn't so decrepit myself I'd be putting my Prospectors Beatd to work! Keep it happening! ⚒️⚖️👍🤠
What part of Arizona? Id love to see you come to the san juans in SW Colorado. Silverton more specifically

Copper mines are great!
Slice the Azurite and Malachite rocks. they make great cabs.
...and just as I wrote that former comment, you said so yourself in the video... 👍👍👍
Go Dan!!!
Thanks
Can you tumble azurite or malachite? Or are they too brittle or soft?
What beautifull minerals . . So vibrant . .

I am camping near several CA/AZ abandoned mines right now.
Beautiful! ♥
Man I live in Arizona and need friends to go out and do things like this
I know a spot in Western Australia where there are boulders of solid metallic copper. One of them is the size of a large car sticking out of the ground.
That's a road??
Those are some beautiful minerals..,.
No one can say your wrong... seeing Az-u-rite! Nice finds!
I really enjoyed this video of rock hondin I like the way you explain the kinds of minerals thank you for making this video I try to see your videos every day
nice finds thank you for sharing the adventure and information.
Amazing video!! Thanks for sharing!!
Do you have a rock and mineral display case at home? I would bet you do and it would be FULL of magnificent pieces.
azurite 😍
I love the azurite too😍
Heeeeyyyy azurite and malachite
What's the difference??
Gorgeous stuff !
Funny how it resembles moldy bread at a glance tho ...
yes
I love rockhounding….. I just don’t get to go often, and I live in AZ!
I love the blue colour it's so rich

How are these formed. I've never heard of these minerals.
Great brother!

I wonder how many understood your Friendly Giant reference!
That "peacock ore" copper is always pretty to look at.
And them roads look like fun if you have a good 4x4, or my mountain bike 😂
Six stars brother
Thank you Dan and Company.

Dan....you need a donkey with all the rocks you end up picking up! LOL!
Or he’s got to bring his kids 😂

Pretty cool stuff!
I feel like the fine crystals would be great for insetting into rings like you would with crushed stones.
Sonora Desert, beautiful place, but very harsh.
How did you get access to that location?
I would say, it is up for debate, whether you can call azurite and malachite sulfides, as they do not contain sulfur. They are oxidized/carbonized from sulfides, but alk the sulfur is gone. Cabonates or carbonhydrites, not sulfides in my book.

Looks like you need the Marauder Mini 2...lol....or Seeker 4 pro
Sorry if I missed it, but how old is the mine?
Pictures clear
I was very surprised to see the pointy sharp malachite crystals. I have only see malachite sliced to reveal the botryoidal (sp) bubbles with eyes all over the place.
You should make a vid showing off your collection!
