    got a fat cut on my hand while i was carving, and learn more than a few things from it:
    1. carve in a well lit place. you need to be able to see your EXACT knife placement so you dont slip the knife or cut against the grain accidentally
    2. dont carve when your sick or dizzy. i know this sounds obvious, but it wasnt for me so it might not be for someone else
    3. have good medical supplies on hand and ready. butterflies, good band aids, disinfectant (NOT rubbing alchohol) and towels are really good to have on hand, im lucky my parents had some lying around.
    4. wear your protective gear. dont get cocky, wear your god damn gloves.
    5. be prepaired to pass out/ loose alot of blood. if you hate blood, im sorry but you picked the wrong craft. if you dont know what blood loss feels like, you get super dizzy, really hot and sweaty, tired and you get heavy. make sure to put pressure on the wound quickly to prevent to most blood loss.
    all in all, hurting yourself is always a learning experience, and knowing what to do and preparing for the worst is the best thing to do. happy carving!

      Or you can go to a woodworking shop and they should have a bunch of wood there (I get my basswood for carving at my local woodworking shop, and they also have carving tools)

  • @loveclub542
    @loveclub542 2 роки тому +2

    how do you get your wood to be so soft? my tools are sharp but they cant cut through it smoothly

    • @CarvingisFun
      @CarvingisFun  2 роки тому +1

      Im specifically using air dried basswood in my videos.
      It's softer than most of the kiln dried wood and my knives are honed super sharp going from 400 grit, to 800 grit, to 1000 grit, 2000 grit and final honing with a leathet strop Nd honing compound.

    Any tips on getting better cuts? I ordered basswood, and have the nice knives... but butter it is not! I'm getting really frustrated with this :/

    • @CarvingisFun
      @CarvingisFun  2 роки тому

      Humm, may I ask what brand of knife and wood you purchased? This will give a good base point for me to start from.
      But some simple suggestions you can implement now are apply a slicing motion when you cut will allow the blade to go through the wood easier.
      You can also moisten the wood with an alcohol/water mixture in a spray bottle on the dpot you widh to carve.

    Brian: You don't show the height of the owl on the starting block like you do on most of your other projects. Is 3" a good height top to bottom of feet
    ?

    • @CarvingisFun
      @CarvingisFun  Рік тому

      Ya, this was one of my first videos where I didn't start doing that yet.
      Im gonna say 2 and 3/4 inch to 3 inch is a good height. Depends on what looks good for you. Looking back, I would have made it a bit shorter because I think it would uave been a bit more visually appealing

      A few weeks ago I wrote and asked about finishing my first project...Little Bruno. I used Min Wax on a piece of Hemlock and it came out all right. I have since carved some dogs on which I used water based acrylic paint. It has worked out much better. Plus it cleans up very easily.
