General art tip for everyone out there: don't hyperfocus. One of the best pieces of advice Ive ever gotten from an art teacher. If you focus too highly on one section, it wont fit in with the rest of the project. Stop periodically and take a look from a distance. No one is going to so closely at it and find that one little thing you couldnt fix.

I had limited materials so I just decided to make mine out of black play doh and used a plastic silverware knife as my whittling knife. I think this was a very fun and cute little project and had a great time making the fox even though I didn't make it out of wood. Also making it out of play doh actually allowed me to bend the rules a bit and make the design a bit more detailed. Good video, detailed instructions, and fun/educational.

this reminds me of when i started carving with my grandfather. He made a lot of wonderful stuff. Thanks for bringing up tears of joy to my eyes, I'll gladly join you on your tutoring.
Im glad that the videos can bring up souch wonderful emotions! Mango wood is a little on the harder side but isn't out of the realm of possibility for whittling. Other good options are pine and butternut as they are close to the same hardness as basswood. I don't whittle and have never been interested...until now. I love how your video is naturally fun to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I might start whittling now as you've sparked an interest. Thank you!!!
This video was recommended to me in the middle of a panic attack, I was trying to distract myself and saw the cute fox and decided to watch it. It was very calming, thank you ~♡
No clue why this was recommended to me, but these videos are really calming. I've been watching them while drawing or when I'm trying to relax on my work break. Your instructions are so gentle and watching you carve is mesmerizing. I have occasional hand tremors so I don't dare try carving by myself yet, but I think this might make a fun activity to try with my grandfather one day. Thank you for this cute little fox, he's so lovely and I'll let you know if I make him one day 💕
Your comment about having a tremor caught my eye. I encourage you to give it a shot.I have a severe tremor of the hands, and I whittle, using the same protective measures you see in the video. I have yet to cut myself.
@@gmgllc8059 thank you 🥺💫 so if I just use the necessary protection I should be okay then? That was really my main concern with starting something like whittling. I can be a little shakey so I didn't want to get into something if it would just be a safety hazard, but knowing it should be fine I might give it a shot when I have the time
I started with a cheap whittling kit with what looked like an ok knife and it was a struggle. upgraded to a flexcut knife and it was night and day! much more buttery.
This inspired me to pick up some tools and materials for whittling on Amazon. I just finished my first project, this fox! It took me a while to get the hang of it, and I did have to pause the video for a while to catch up, but it was a wonderful guide to follow along with. I think my fox turned out fantastic for a first timer!
True, but really good stuff isnt always sold on amazon and channels like mine help point people to where to find em :) still, i can understand why some prefer amazon for convenience.
This video makes me want to makes wood carvings when I retire and give them to my grandchildren whenever they come And then remember im still a high school student
I been whittling for several months using U tube as my teacher, but you have the gift to teach! Thank you for your videos, they are well done. I’m going to have fun with this one.
This looks awesome! I was reading a book called PAX, and one of the main characters decides to make a fox out of butternut wood because he misses his pet fox Pax. I was interested and you were the first tutorial I found, I hope I can try this sometime :)
Ooo a butternut fox sounds like it would look really cool! I always find it interesting how some people run across this channel, how you found the channel is quite unique! Is it a good book? Always like to keep an eye out for a good read whan I find the time.
@@CarvingisFun It’s a good book! I’m reading with a few friends, and we’re all really liking it. It’s a bit sad at times, but for the most part, it’s quite nice. Do you have any tips for starting / working with other wood types aside from basswood?
I do have some tips for ya and have them listed on my website! But in short, keep your knife sharp (super sharp, sharper than when you got it), softer woods like pine and basswood are more enjoyable, and learn some of the basic cuts (in the last link below). Here are 10 different woods I like with my thoughts on carving them: carvingisfun.com/best-wood-for-whittling-and-wood-carving/ Here are ways to soften the wood for carving: carvingisfun.com/how-to-soften-wood-for-carving/ For a complete starter gude this one will cover almost everything: carvingisfun.com/whittling-guide/
I went very slow and took around 2 hours to finish this, but I'm really happy with how it turned out!! Great tutorial, and thank you for giving me a fun introduction into wood carving :) Can't wait to make more
Nice video! This makes me want to start carving. What I love about this simple polygonal fox is that If you didn’t have another to compare it to you would never know the face was a little squashed.
Something i notice with all great artists is that they make their work look easy- And you not only make it look easy, but entertaining! I actually want to do this now!! Instantly subscribed, thank you for your videos!!
I really like your style of explaining stuff! You succed in ingiting a fire inside of me and make me want to start right away at 4 AM in the morning. :D Now I just need to get a piece of wood and start carving.
I’m so excited to try this! You were absolutely excellent at explaining what we needed to do to accomplish such a great look! I’m planning on giving my carving to my great grandmother, who has the surname “Fox”; we didn’t get to spend Christmas with her as she was sick with Covid, and her husband has been dead for two years this March, making the quarantine really hard on her, so I hope it’ll bring her some happiness!
Getting my first job soon and I was wondering what to do with my first paycheck, now I know exactly what to to spend it on. Here's to a new hobby I hope.
So this came on my recommended and now I wanna start whittling, it was something my grandpa used to do and he would make me little foxes kinda like these ones since they are one of my favorite animals.
I just started learning acrylic painting, so I'm all art'ed-out at the moment, but I saw this and it looked relaxing to watch. Nice fox! I'm sure whittlings (is that the word?) are fun to give as gifts. I gave my first few paintings away as gifts, and they feel so robust and display worthy. It's been fun! Also, there was a small amount of time as a kid that I was super into whittling sticks in my yard into wands. Wouldn't be surprised if I got into this some day.
My grandpa died when I was still a kid so I never really got to know him but I always felt like we were very similar. Like he was the missing link in my family that could make me feel like I belonged. When I got older without him around I found myself wondering what it would have been like if he taught me some wood carving. He was self taught and created the most amazing things from wood (miniature trains, faces...). But somehow I always felt this barrier and never tried it myself. Maybe because I only ever saw men and boys doing it, maybe because of my chronic joint pain. But thanks to your videos I just whittled this little fox and I am so happy! This brought me so much joy and memories of my grandfather. Thank you for doing these videos!
I randomly got recommended this and now I really want to try this myself- Edit, unfortunately losing the heart cuz of it: I’ve never carved anything before actually! This vid makes we want to start doing it as a hobby!
Not even three minutes in and I absolutely love your video style. Very calm and informative. I've been wanting to whittle since I was a kid, think it's finally time I give it a shot
For someone who has never watched a whittling video, I am very happy that you've been my first impression on the genre. I'll absolutely be staying for more of this stuff!
Thank you for this video tutorial Brian, it was actually thanks to this that I was enchanted with the subject and inspired to buy a tool set and some wood and get started. This is the first thing I made; this fox. It went pretty well until the end with the head... I couldn't make the shape as good as you did, but not just because of inexperience (mostly, probably) but also the fact all 3 of my knives have a straight blade, not curved. So I messed the head up and it got smaller and smaller and smaller.... So i reduced the snout and made a squirrel out of him haha. Anyway, I almost never leave a comment so excuse the length of it. I really just wanted to say my thanks for inspiring me to take on this hobby ! : )
I found this on a family meeting on new year and watched it out of boredom, but now i'm deeply interested on it thanks to the way you explained all :) i'll try it as soon as i can!
Wow you made it look so easy. I'm just getting into carving and I already spent hours on carving a 5cm/2inch mushroom. That seemed like a nice simple thing to start with and learn. In stead of like something really hard like a gnoom and get disappointed. I learned a lot by just watching you carve this fox. No cutting against the grain. I learned that already haha. And the steps you follow like waiting to do the legs at the end cause you risk breaking them if you hold it the wrong way. It all makes a lot of sense. And you are so right when you say: it doesn't have to be perfect. I was maybe trying to hard to make the perfect mushroom but how many perfect mushrooms are there in nature. I should not waist too much time on that. I learned a lot so thanks! And I'm gonna check out more video's soon.
Never ever had any thoughts of anything to do with what this video shows but the algorithms sucked me in and now I’m gonna start making one of these this week at work on my breaks
Another person here who randomly got this in their recommendations. I never considered wood carving as a hobby before, but this looks so cute and fun and I'd love to try it. Thank you for the video!
I have no plans to start wood carving, and *had* no plans to watch this fully (I did). But. You made this intresting and now I wanna start wood carving- although, I probably won't because I am too young and no one would buy me the supplies. Very satisfying work!
I neither have a block of wood nor a whittling knife nor did I even know what whittling was but here I am and I'm probably going to watch the whole video anyway lmao
So happy I found this, I've always been daunted by beginning anything creative and you made this super approachable. Also loved the calm laid back instructions, very Bob Ross esc
Wow its really nice. My Grandmother loved it when I gave it to her. So I made a little set for her all thanks to you. Thank you so much for your for the video!
I didn't have wood to carve but I did happen to have some dried clay from an old cheap pottery wheel kit. Decided to use my clay carving tools instead. Turned out super cute and was a blast to sit down and make. Thank you for the tutorial~
Love the way you have the picture on the side of the video I haven't seen it on other peoples channels I genuinely think you will make it big one day look forward to the next video
This looks amazing and fun I'd love to one day follow some of these tutorials they're very calm no stupid overly loud music or rushed parts. Very clear and instructional. I'm wondering if you'd be able to show us how to do a simple bird? I'm a huge lover of Ravens particularly so that'd be awesome if you could ♡
@@CarvingisFun thank you so much. My name on near every other platform is Raven so I couldn't help suggesting it haha can't wait to see it have fun and good luck carving ^-^
My favorite part of this video is that you made a mistake, said it was okay, fixed it as best you could, and kept going :) It shows that not every project will be perfect. It's okay to make mistakes and keep going.
a few months ago I got a random cow hoof trimming video recommendation by UA-cam and it seemed so out of nowhere? but i watched it and I'm now i really enjoy them. I'm talking about this because I have never ever watched a single video on making wood things and yet here I am. and I have the feeling I'm gonna stay around hehehe
Great tutorial, I'd love to try it out some day! I've made wooden cups with my dad, who has learned it from his great grandfather. We usually use "tree-tumors", so that we can make the walls of the cup thinner.
Man what luck to be recommended this. I've always wanted to whittle toys for my kids lol, so satisfying to watch and your clear and positive teaching method inspired me to give this a shot. Liked and subbed. Excellent video!
So, you sound exactly like my dad, and he really liked to whittle too. He'd always get me sticks and give me a swiss army knives and we'd whittle together. I'd just make spears but he was pretty good. If you couldn't tell by now, we don't do that anymore. And this was insanely nostalgic, and got me to hang out with my dad as we carved together agian. So thank you, I'll love my little fox forever.
I don’t watch whittling, and haven’t been on the crafty side of youtube for at least a year. But oh my god I’m so happy this got recommended, it was so peaceful watching this and now I really want to try this :D
This was recommended to me and I had never really considered picking up whittling before. This is such a wonderful toturial! I appreciate that you pause and explain certain techniques or beginner's mistakes when you first encounter them. The video in itself is extremely relaxing to watch ^^ I hope to eventually come back to it with the necessary materials and tools to follow along!

This video was recommended to me in the middle of a panic attack, I was trying to distract myself and saw the cute fox and decided to watch it.
It was very calming, thank you ~♡
Im glad you found it calming and hope you are feeling better!
Thank you for this cute little fox, he's so lovely and I'll let you know if I make him one day 💕
fancy seeing you here buddy
fancy seeing you here too bestie
Your comment about having a tremor caught my eye. I encourage you to give it a shot.I have a severe tremor of the hands, and I whittle, using the same protective measures you see in the video. I have yet to cut myself.
@@gmgllc8059 thank you 🥺💫 so if I just use the necessary protection I should be okay then? That was really my main concern with starting something like whittling. I can be a little shakey so I didn't want to get into something if it would just be a safety hazard, but knowing it should be fine I might give it a shot when I have the time
@@acelinl7652 I also have Essential Tremor. Wear hand protection and take it slow.
You make it look like you're cutting butter! It just looks so smooth that makes me want to try it! Amazing video, congratulations! 💕
Man you haven't lived till you've carved butter
You are lucky to have bass Wood over there ! In Denmark where Iive we can’t buy it.
Outstanding!
I'm glad you were able to follow the video and make your own lil fox :)
soon you will recognize! supporting amazon is the death of art and our planet
True, but really good stuff isnt always sold on amazon and channels like mine help point people to where to find em :) still, i can understand why some prefer amazon for convenience.
OCC Tools, Flexcut, and Beavercraft are some of the best brands for beginners and gives a lot of value for the money.
Don't forget to sharp them Bryan! Good tools are nothing if they can't correctly cut your wood
Just scrolling through UA-cam and now I've ordered a whittling kit.
Ha! It happens to the best of us 😀
Definitely the next bob Ross, you deserve a pbs segment
This video makes me want to makes wood carvings when I retire and give them to my grandchildren whenever they come
And then remember im still a high school student
Starting younger will give that skill more time to mature to excellence :)
I been whittling for several months using U tube as my teacher, but you have the gift to teach! Thank you for your videos, they are well done. I’m going to have fun with this one.
You're welcome! Im happy that I could help guide you along and get you started whittling!
Did I just watch a 33 minute video of something I've never had an interest in?
Yes.
Did I love it?
Absolutely.
Holy crap, this is relaxing to watch. It's like you're carving into an extra crispy apple.
This is really cool! I love when the algorithm recommends random videos not at all related to things I typically watch ❤️
This is the only video I’ve seen of this guy but on first impression he seems like a wood carving Bob Ross. Very chill.
My elderly neighbour has a HUGE collection of birds he’s carved and painted and always wanted to try myself, your vid is great for beginners
I'll admit that this was a wholly random interjection into my feed, but i loved every single moment of this. What a wonderful video, thank you !
Here are 10 different woods I like with my thoughts on carving them: carvingisfun.com/best-wood-for-whittling-and-wood-carving/
Here are ways to soften the wood for carving: carvingisfun.com/how-to-soften-wood-for-carving/
For a complete starter gude this one will cover almost everything: carvingisfun.com/whittling-guide/
i love pax sm!! i picked it up a few years ago when from barnes and noble, and i fell in love.
Same
I loved the book the second felt a little rushed but was still good
I have never seen a knife cut through wood like that - its like butter
I went very slow and took around 2 hours to finish this, but I'm really happy with how it turned out!! Great tutorial, and thank you for giving me a fun introduction into wood carving :) Can't wait to make more
Wow I love the formatting of your tutorial. Thank you for putting the current step up and to the side, it’s incredibly helpful
You are welcome! I strive to make them as informative as I can :)
"actually"
I don't know why UA-cam recommended this to you, I never did any woodcarving, nor do I know anybody who does. But after watching this, I might start!
Nice video! This makes me want to start carving. What I love about this simple polygonal fox is that If you didn’t have another to compare it to you would never know the face was a little squashed.
The bunny, bear, or dog would be a good next project.
I can't even stay still and pay attention to 5 minute long guitar tutorials, but this enchanted me to a deep level.
Me who has knows nothing about wood carving what so ever, this pops up in my reccomend
"So anyways I started learning"
Something i notice with all great artists is that they make their work look easy-
And you not only make it look easy, but entertaining! I actually want to do this now!!
Instantly subscribed, thank you for your videos!!
I really like your style of explaining stuff!
You succed in ingiting a fire inside of me and make me want to start right away at 4 AM in the morning. :D
Now I just need to get a piece of wood and start carving.
Thank you!! I do my best to make them as easy to follow as I can :)
@@CarvingisFun Not only that but I love your calm nature and I can feel that carving is your passion.
I do enjoy it. Both wood and stone provide so much enjoyment and creative inspiration :)
I know nothing about this beyond making a pointy stick, but you seem like a good and very patient teacher
Thank you!!
Even making a pointy stick is quite enjoyable and just shaving off wood is a fun little thing I like to mindlessly do on occasion
Getting my first job soon and I was wondering what to do with my first paycheck, now I know exactly what to to spend it on. Here's to a new hobby I hope.
So this came on my recommended and now I wanna start whittling, it was something my grandpa used to do and he would make me little foxes kinda like these ones since they are one of my favorite animals.
woodcarving looks like a skill easy to learn, tough to master, might pick it up one day thanks to this video
This has been recommended to me for 2 months, I thought I might finaly check it out and I was not disappointed.
You're welcome!
Im glad that this project brought back some fond memories for you!
The final result is very cute
I randomly got recommended this and now I really want to try this myself-
Edit, unfortunately losing the heart cuz of it: I’ve never carved anything before actually! This vid makes we want to start doing it as a hobby!
Not even three minutes in and I absolutely love your video style. Very calm and informative. I've been wanting to whittle since I was a kid, think it's finally time I give it a shot
Great video, you're the Bob Ross of wood carving.
Its what I do on my breaks as well :)
Tried this, mine came out looking really good! Really can’t believe how easy to follow this tutorial is
I neither have a block of wood nor a whittling knife nor did I even know what whittling was but here I am and I'm probably going to watch the whole video anyway lmao
Almost fell asleep to this. Very calming, Thankyou.
I dont know why UA-cam recommended this to me, but it was really fun to watch and now I have an interest in whittling, thanks lot
Sometimes it's so refreshing to see such a wholesome guy do what he loves on youtube. Wonderful job you did there!
This is like the Bob Ross of whittling, it's so relaxing to watch!
Love the way you have the picture on the side of the video I haven't seen it on other peoples channels I genuinely think you will make it big one day look forward to the next video
Thank you! My goal is to try and make my guides as easy to follow as possible :)
This looks amazing and fun I'd love to one day follow some of these tutorials they're very calm no stupid overly loud music or rushed parts. Very clear and instructional. I'm wondering if you'd be able to show us how to do a simple bird? I'm a huge lover of Ravens particularly so that'd be awesome if you could ♡
Ive been getting a lot of requests for a raven, ill add it to my list of tutorials rto look into
@@CarvingisFun thank you so much.
Bless the UA-cam algorithm to show me this video and the channel this looks so fun and I want to try it out for myself! Instant sub btw XD
a few months ago I got a random cow hoof trimming video recommendation by UA-cam and it seemed so out of nowhere? but i watched it and I'm now i really enjoy them. I'm talking about this because I have never ever watched a single video on making wood things and yet here I am. and I have the feeling I'm gonna stay around hehehe
You got the hoof videos reccomend as well? I still dont know how that was put in my feed too.
Thank you so much for making this. You have a really good voice and explain things in a nice beginner friendly way!
Nice video, i appreciate how you made it easy to understand and follow for people new to this stuff!
Thanks!!
This was recommended to me and I had never really considered picking up whittling before.
This is such a wonderful toturial! I appreciate that you pause and explain certain techniques or beginner's mistakes when you first encounter them. The video in itself is extremely relaxing to watch ^^
I hope to eventually come back to it with the necessary materials and tools to follow along!
Wow this is so relaxing and satisfying to watch. Might get inspired to wood carve as well. You do explain the whole process pretty nicely
I have never shown interest in whittling but this popped up on my home page of UA-cam at 12:26 am and i am strangely obsessed with this little fox
I just watched someone do a wooden fox and I enjoyed every second of it
Thank you, i doubt you will ever read this comment, but just in case:
This is an amazing tutorial and i just went on your channel and it is amazing, you rlly deserve more subscribers, thanks to you i can do what my grandfatger did ! He died before he could ever teach me, thanks to you i can now learn it and make him proud.
Thanks from france !
Sorry for the bad english i'm still not fluent enough
Howdy!!
I do my best to read and respond to every comment someone leaves :)
Thank you for the wonderful comment! These little messages like yours brightens my day and keeps me motivated to keep making videos for everyone.
You're most welcome. Aso your English is perfect, I cant tell that you're still learning :)
@@CarvingisFun hi! Thank you for your answer!
I don't even do wood carving, but this video was so pleasant to watch, thank you for good quality content!
Hey, friend! Thank you very much for producing quality content like this! I hope to get to try whittling someday, it sounds very fun!
You're welcome!! It is an enjoyable and relaxing hobby
It's really easy to get into
You know this video is going to get recommended again in a few years, cool tutorial tho!
Such a cute whittle fox.
thank you for this, it was my first ever carving
You're welcome!!
Mine is missing it’s two front legs, has a wonky tail, but it’s my first time and it was so much fun. The wittle fox is perfect. Thank you for an amazing tutorial!
You're welcome! I'm glad you had a good time :)
I've been seeing this video pop up on my recommendations over and over again...and you know what i enjoyed it
My whole family is impressed by my "skills" you are a great teatcher
just spent 30 mins making a fox out of a carrot bc why the heck not
Muy buen video lo entiendo a la perfección apesar de no ser de mi idioma, la figurita que hice quedo muy hermosa gracias a sus enseñanzas
UA-cam: hey wanna see how to whittle a tiny simple fox?
me, sleepless at 4 am: please, do show me how to whittle a simple fox
Great tutorial btw
Just made my first whittle with this tutorial. It took me about 3 and a half hours, and lots of grain direction mistakes, but i finally got it and it turned out really nice! It's really fun to do, i really like it!! Nice tutorial man!
your knife goes through the wood like butter! this is incredible!
