Glad you enjoyed the video! Soap carving is a great alternative to whittling, it's just as calming and you can do it with some basic tools in your house :)
Got a set of knives for Christmas figured I would look for something easy. Didn't end up with a dog but I have a pretty passable monkey...

Really awesome!!! I carved the bunny you designed and gave it to my cousin for easter😁. It would be really cool if you could design a simple sloth to carve, I've looked on google but all they had was statues and chainsaw carving. My mom collects sloths, so I want to carve her one. I don't know how to go about it though.

Great video! On this one my wood has been splitting off quite a bit and I'm careful not to cut up across grain. I'm using a Flexcut and BeaverCraft basswood. I have ordered more that's air dried on eBay. Hopefully as my technique improves I'll find a way to prevent this.
Practice practice practice. You will eventually learn to work with the wood and just naturally know how to slice into the wood without realizing it.
Good choice on the air dried basswood, I have yet to find any that is as nice to carve as this stuff :)

I bought a whittling starting kit with three knifes, a basic one, a hook shaped pne and a detailing one, since this figure is small sized, would you recommend to just use the detailing knife?

There are several ways to do it, but if you want to carve hair into a dog with a knife, you would probably want to make several wavering v-cuts into the wood. This video at the 11 and a half min mark gives a simple tutorial on what to do: ua-cam.com/video/dR-7VrMxjv8/v-deo.html

Does the Flexcut Whittling Jack have a lock? I'd love a whittling pocket knife but they have to be non-locking to be legal to carry here in the UK
The whittlin jack does not lock, but keep in mind that it can be very stiff to open and close.
@@CarvingisFun Awesome, I need to get one now, I generally prefer a stiffer slipjoint anyway since locking blades are (stupidly) illegal to carry, stiff ones are a little more inconvenient but they're also less likely to snap closed on your hand, as has actually happened to me before. I don't really understand why the safer knives are illegal. Thanks for your help man
May i ask where did you get your finger guard?
I am using self adhering ace wrap. You can find them in most pharmacies or stores that sells bandages.
I like them because they are cheap and reusable.

What if I want to do the ears up like a German Shepard
I would then leave more room on the top of the head for them. So maybe a 2.25 inch tall block of wood should give you enough material to work with.
would using 1x1x4” work instead of 1x1x2” or would it not come out right?
I actually start with a 1x1x4 inch piece and just cut it in half with a saw :)
You could also just carve the dog on the top 2 inches and have em sitting on a 2 inch l9g or something

For me, I just find images on google to reference and scale to what Im doing. The more simple, sometimes more cartoony, designs usually work best for me as there is less detail to add in.
It can seem challenging, but if you can learn how to create templates there is litteraly nothing stopping you from creating whatever you want

Brian: How do you finish the dog if you want to replicate a Black Lab??? Black shoe polish, black stain, any ideas?
If I were to use what I have in my house, black wood stain, acrylic paint, or watercolor paint.
I can't figured out if this block you are carving is 1" so when i start the line for the earand draw the straight line down , this is so small i can't get an ear? How much room is it from the top of the block to your 1st line? Then the slant down is how much and the line down from the slant is in how much? I just see room for an ear. Looks a larger on the screen than what we have in our hand with a 1x1 block??
This is indeed a 1"x1"x2" block of wood. The reason why it may look bigger could be that I am utilizing the corners of the pre cut wood block to make the nose and ears.
So instead of drawing all the marks on a flat surface, I rotate the block 45 degrees and have one of the corners facing me.

Yes i realize that it's on a 45 degree but the ear is what i am having a problem -when you mark the slant how far is that down and the straight line down is how far in from the edge. When i do it i really have no size ear?
Ah, gotcha. Let me replicate it again this evening and I will get you some measurements
Some measurements around the ear:
the 45 degree line representing the top ear: line starts 5/16" from the corner (both top and side)
The line on the side representing the side of the ears, directly below the 45 degree line is just a little more than 1/16" from the edge.

Sorry friend, does beeswax is applied before or after I want to paint it with acrylics?
I would do it after. Since it is a wax, it can melt and distort your paint.
Also, if you paint it and there is no wood showing, there's really no need to apply wax unless you want to.

If you are doing a wattered down acrylic paint so you can see the wood grain, it would be a good idea to put a preparation layer. But I just paint directly on the wood.
Some others use linseed oil as the base, but its not 100% necessary
What is the tape on your thumbs and fingers?
Its self adheriing ace wrap, I like it for extra cushion when pushing on the back of thr blade and to prevent accidents
After attempting this for the 4th time, watching & pausing this countless times, and succeeding in making nothing but 3 shapeless figures, I finally did it! I'm so happy. A few questions hoping you can help with:
1. if i don't have beeswax, can i use Vaseline petroleum jelly instead?
2. do you recommend coating it with shellac/lacquer?
3. do you do anything else to thoroughly remove the fluffy/splinter looking bits and wooden dust (after patting the dog to get as much of the excess dust out as possible), especially if they're trapped in the crevices?
or is that what coating the dog with beeswax alone would solve
4. Do you recommend leaving the dog out in the sun to dry it out and prevent mold?
P.S. I'm gonna superglue tiny beads to it as eyes! Thanks Carving is fun ❤️
Yay! Sometimes it just takes some practice to get use to the wood and blade.
As to your questions:
1) Sealing it is up to you, but I would bypass the petroleum jelly. Acrylic or watercolor paints are also a good option.
2) You can use shellac if you want, but isn't necessary.
3) many people rinse in water after sanding to get the rest of the debris off. If you do this, let it dry before sealing it.
4) Yes, drying in the sun is a good idea, especially before sealing it.

Hi! I just started adding the metric measurements in the video descriptions, but this one is 2.5 cm x 2.5cm x 5 cm.
I wish the entire world just used the metric system, it makes so much more sense.
this one was going well untill i got too the nose XD it started to flake off everytime because of the way the wood grain was going and then once i got to the tail i chopped it straight off haha... all is well tho i glued it all back on :D

I've been trying to work on one that is simple and can be done in under 40 min, but don't think it will be ready by thanksgiving.
