I just started wood carving about a month ago, and what you were saying about wanting the project to be perfect in the beginning fits me to a tee. I get frustrated at myself for making so many mistakes, but then I remind myself that I just started and will keep making them even when I get good at it. Thank you for making these helpful videos!!!
Good to see that he has lots of hand protection. Probably he doesn't need it so much, but beginners like me certainly will. So he gave the example for us to follow. Hand safety is pretty important here too.
Doing this but using Crepe Mertle. Have a bunch of stick I got from someone when they trimmed it back for winter. Gonna butter one, and Kona Stain color the other. Great gift idea for my dad, thanks for these videos, and all your videos!
the bob ross of whittling great video, I look forward to watching your progress, i saw the knight video and thought it was wonderful, i hope i can get something half as good as yours, i really like chess, but dont have much money so this could be my alternative. Great video, this will look so cool once its done!
A chess set never even crossed my mind. It’s the perfect project for my skill level, which is novice in need of practice! Lmao. Thanks for all the videos
@@CarvingisFun I think i need to work on my knife-sharpening technique with the strop as it's never super sharp, but I'm already halfway through the second pawn and it's a lot faster!
Thank you for this mini series! I've been slowly trying to learn by watching your great videos and just started to get confident enough to think of other things i might want to do in the future and a chess set was on my list, Ps.. if you ever want to do one for a lizard i Hope to be ready for it after doing 32 chess pieces :P
I whittled my first thing today and I've just finished watching the Queens Gambit. My daughter plays chess and I've no idea how this popped up on my recommendations 😉😆
Thank u for this it’s going to be a nice project for next week or so. well I’m still a novice so maybe more like a month or 2. Either way this looks fun.
You're welcome! I'm happy you are finding the videos helpful :) The pawns will start off slow, but once you get the hang of it, you start getting faster.
That seems like a great thing to get my practice in when my knives arrive. I like chess and those are simple AND probably a great way to practice the transition of handle to point on the magic wands I want to make. :) (Of course carving Queens would make more sense since so many sets come with only one per colour...^^)
The first step is 2 make sure you wear some protective gloves so that there's no injuries from being possibly cut. Secondly an (entire) Chess Set consist of 32 pieces & not 16. But the carving is excellent.
Another tip is to warm up the pieces with a hair dryer or heat gun before applying the wax mix. It will help it soak deep into the wood fibers. That same formula using food grade mineral oil and beeswax works great on cutting boards and wooden utensils.
Cool video! Sorry if I missed this somewhere, but what wood did you use for the black pieces? If you actually painted them, what'd you use for that? Thanks!
Just asking when do think you will upload videos on carving the additional pieces. Would like to start on the pawns, i know it will take little time but would like to be able to start the other pieces when i finish the pawns. Thank you.
I'm trying toget them out at least once a week on mondays. This style of vido takes a good chunk of my day to edit, render, and upload but if I find more time I can see about getting two a week for ya.
Hey! I would like to carve or wood turn a Man Ray inspired chess set. I am a complete beginner on the process, would you be open to have a discussion ?
I rarely take my knives back to a stone unless they are damaged. Once I get my knives nice and honed sharp, I just use my leather strop to maintain the edge every 15 to 25 min of whittling
@MalikSalvetti just remember that this is one of those crafts where those "imperfections" actually make each item an individual, unique, work of art. I encourage imperfections, it makes each piece beautiful
Do you know where I can buy decent and cheap wood? I barely started carving and one thing I'm having issue is finding reliable wood without draining my wallet.
Video is great I guess the dimensions are still the same 2.5 cm x 2.5 xm x 5 cm are the same as in the other video? 2.5 cm x 2.5 xm x 5 cm measure on all videos: 2.5 cm x 2.5 xm x 5 cm

I also have to constantly remind myself that perfection isn't needed. Progress keeps everything enjoyable and you learn more as you keep carving :)

So funny you made this video, I was just thinking about eventually making a chess set. Great video as always! 👍
Thanks! I've been slowly making pieces in my reviews, just decided to go all in and finish it up :)

This was my 2nd whittling project ever and I'm very happy how it turned out! Thank you so much
Your videos inspired me to get a set of flex-cut for Xmas. I’m 3 pawns and half a rook in and loving it 😁 thanks 👍

Thanks for the kind words!
Sometimes it takes a little trial and error, but you will get your carvings to where you want in the end :)
He's totally the Bob Ross of whittling!!!
this is exactly what i've been looking for. thanks.

Your welcome! Its a great practice project to get any new whittler started.

I've been trying to carve a knight for a while now, excited to see your version of the knight
Going to make that video next. I went through a few versions and opted for the simplest one as I need to make 4 of them.
@@CarvingisFun looking forward to this
it took an hour but I MADE ONE!! thanks for the video! :)
Yay! Sometimes the first ones take longer, but once you get the patterns down it goes much faster :)
@@CarvingisFun I think i need to work on my knife-sharpening technique with the strop as it's never super sharp, but I'm already halfway through the second pawn and it's a lot faster!
It all takes practice, especially knife sharpening. You will get it in time just like I did, keep it up!!
Feel like its gonna be the same for me, haven't started yet do...

My wife watched the series some time last year, from what little bits I saw it looked pretty good!

Is this easy for beginners? I want to make this (once I get wood) with a few minor customizations on the horse, king, and queen
Yep, it was designed for beginners
Informative. I would use a toothbrush to apply the beewax.
I'll see if I have an extra toothbrush available to try that out :)

I used basswood for all the pieces but stained the darker pieces with some random wood stain I have laying around.

Ok sounds great, thank you
look forward to other pieces carved. ever do small person carvings?
I have, but honestly dont find them as enjoyable as animals or shapes.
Take a look at doug Linker's channel- he does really nice little people figures :)
Yes he does!
Great series! I love your knight design but honestly everything else but the bishop looks weird imo lol
Thanks again. Yup! G-G
i use a belt sander to round my block of wood
would red cedar work instead of basswood? Love your vids! Keep it up!!
Where do you get the 1 ich bass wood blocks from?
Online craft shops. I got mine from ebay
Hey! I would like to carve or wood turn a Man Ray inspired chess set. I am a complete beginner on the process, would you be open to have a discussion ?
Sounds interesting, what's up?
How do you resharpen your knife? Are you using a stone?
I rarely take my knives back to a stone unless they are damaged.
Once I get my knives nice and honed sharp, I just use my leather strop to maintain the edge every 15 to 25 min of whittling
Can you do this with hardwood
Yeppers! It will take a little longer so go slow and don't force it.
@@CarvingisFun thanks
How do you find out how to do it ? And how many "wrong peices"/ peices that you did not like in your house or room where you whittle ?
Being honest, I winged it and figured it was good enough on the first go.
I also took inspiration from existing chess pieces for shape and design
@@CarvingisFun huh that's impressive
@MalikSalvetti the best advice I can give here is to not overthink it and perfection isn't necessary. Enjoy the process :)
@@CarvingisFun Thanks I have been diagnosed with a lot of mental handicaps so not trying to get everything perfect is really REALLY hard

Do you know where I can buy decent and cheap wood? I barely started carving and one thing I'm having issue is finding reliable wood without draining my wallet.
I typically buy mine on Ebay as I usually find better quality wood and prices, try and prioritize "air dried" basswood as it is really nice to carve.

Yeppers! I'm going to make some edits this weened and update the wood measurements to include both inches and metric.
